I’m sure you are busy getting your dogs ready and making plans for the upcoming
National in Louisville. Be sure to add to your list plans to attend the CHF
Southern Smokehouse Buffet and entertaining Live Auction on Thursday,
March 24th. There are some wonderful items for bid and, in keeping with this
year’s theme, there is even a set of Kentucky Derby Glasses at auction which were
donated by Dr. Richard Greathouse himself!
In addition, Rebecca Connors, LVT, VCPL, Washington State University, will
speak about the MDR1 Gene, the “dangerous drug” list and how to protect your
collie. Rebecca is a graduate of the Veterinary Technology program at Michigan
State University, with experience in neurology and cardiology. She joined Dr.
Katrina Mealey at WSU in 2011 and has enjoyed working in genetics. I hope you
will be able to join us before the dinner to meet Rebecca and learn more.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings the CHF Silent Auctions will be set up
near the ring with hundreds of great items. There is sure to be something there
that you just have to have!
Also, besides the ever-popular pin brushes, CHF Promotions team will be selling
Mutt Mats, CHF Cutting Boards, Mail Box Toppers and new Ringside Bags and
towels plus much more.
The Corporator elections are complete. With special thanks to Chairman Ginny
White and the Election Committee Members Frances Current and Jack White for
their hard work, I am very pleased to present the new CHF Class of 2020:

Vesicular Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus in Dogs
Note: VCLE is an ulcerative skin condition sometimes seen in collies. Symptoms include skin ulceration in the
groin, skin of the abdomen, arm pits, lips and ears.
The Collie Health Foundation received the following from a researcher at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the
University of Georgia who is writing a paper on a therapeutic approach of vesicular cutaneous lupus erythematosus
in collies and shelties. They have sampled 11 cases during the last 4 years and say it is a very severe skin disease and
very hard to treat. The researchers are interested in knowing how commonly breeders see this disease in their dogs.
The assumption is that the disease is not common but in case they are missing a lot of cases they are reaching out to
breeders/owners.
Vesicular Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus in Dogs
Introduction
Vesicular cutaneous lupus erythematosus (VCLE) is a variant form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) that
affects predominantly adult rough collies, Shetland sheepdogs and Border collies. Distinctive cutaneous lesions
consist of annular, polycyclic and/or serpiginous erosions and ulcerations, primarily affecting the axillae, ventral
abdomen and groin with frequent involvement of mucocutaneous junctions and the concave aspects of the pinnae.
Microscopic changes (skin biopsy) in dogs with VCLE reveal a lymphocyte-rich interface dermatitis with evidence
of basal keratinocyte apoptosis, a pathology typical of CLE.
Figure 1a,b. 1—Photographs of ventral aspect of the abdomen (a) and the left inguinal region (b) of a 7.5-year-old
spayed female Shetland Sheepdog. The dog had a several-year history of diffuse erythema with multifocal polycyclic to
serpiginous oozing ulcerations (b), characteristic of vesicular cutaneous lupus erythematosus (VCLE).
Currently, dogs with VCLE have guarded prognosis with some owners and veterinarians opting for euthanasia as
effective treatment based on a large number of cases cannot be recommended. The most successful long-term
therapeutic outcome, proposed on results from a case series of 11 VCLE cases, recommends usage of oral
immunosuppressive doses of prednisone or methylprednisolone alone or in combination with azathioprine.
Unfortunately, complete remission was achieved in only few cases with long-term adverse effects of systemic
glucocorticoids being reported in all dogs receiving this therapeutic modality. Recently, single case reports of two
7
dogs diagnosed with VCLE showed excellent response and complete remission with long-term oral ciclosporin
treatment. Recently, our retrospective investigation into the treatment of this sometimes debilitating skin disease in
11 dogs using calcineurin inhibitors, such as oral ciclosporin and/or topical tacrolimus, showed that this may be an
effective and safe therapeutic option for canine VCLE patients.
Our objectives are to investigate the VCLE prevalence in Collies with a further goal of performing genome-wide
association study to discover a genomic region linked to VCLE in Collies.
Additionally, we would like to try prospectively to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness and any associated side
effects of systemic and/or topical calcineurin inhibitors as well as hydroxychloroquine in the management of canine
VCLE patients.
Please contact us (email) if your dog has a suspicious (based on history and clinical signs) or confirmed VCLE
(based on history, clinical signs and skin biopsy results).

DMS Risk Assessment Test and Rebate Offer!
The Fall 2015 issue of the Collie Health Foundation’s newsletter included information on a grant to Dr. Leigh Anne
Clark of Clemson University to continue working on the genetics of dermatomyositis (DMS).
Now, Clemson University is offering a DMS Risk Assessment test at cost for young dogs ($180 per dog). It is three
genetic tests in one, and they require expensive enzymes and hours of labor. There are a finite number of tests that
can be done for each breed. However, in addition to the testing for young dogs they are testing senior dogs for free
right now - up to 2 per breeder. Dogs must be born before Nov 2007 to qualify for the free senior testing.
Contact Jacquelyn for questions or [email protected].
The Collie Health Foundation’s Board of Directors has approved a rebate of $120 per test to help breeders/owners
with the cost of this test. The rebate is limited to CHF members only but there is no limit on the number of rebates
available to a member. The rebates are available for tests purchased through December 31, 2016, retroactive to
January 1, 2016.

Health Incident/Death Report
The Health and Incident/Death Report is back by popular demand after an absence of several years. As before, the
report is anonymous, and will only be used to help keep other collie owners informed of possible health problems
and help the Foundation seek and select researchers to find causes or solutions to problems that affect the entire
collie population. There is an on-line form you can fill out and submit at http://www.colliehealth.org/incident.asp.
You can submit either an incident or a death report.
You will be asked to describe the occurrence/diagnosis and whether or not the diagnosis was made by a vet.
You will be asked to provide:

The date of the event

The age of the Collie at the time of the event

Any type of permanent identification for the Collie if applicable (i.e. microchip or tattoo)

The sex, variety and color of the dog

Where the dog lives

What brand and variety of dog food do you use?

What Flea/Tick Control product you use

What Heartworm Prevention Product you use

What supplements and/or vitamin this Collie received

Which vaccinations this Collie had

Any activities this Collie is competing in

The dog’s breeding history

What products were used with this Collie before or that the time of onset of the incident
Now that we have the Health Incident/Death Report on our
website again, the Collie Health Foundation needs a
Corporator to agree to monitor reports, respond to reports
when requested (with assistance as needed) and prepare an
annual report to the board and for inclusion in the newsletter
on the number and type of incidences reported.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing to help the Foundation, please contact:
Nancy McDonald at [email protected]
