It’s a reminder of the power of nature and the obstacles that face us as Collie breeders. But like a dedicated Collie breeder, Sunnybank dug in her heels, held fast and is there for us to celebrate and embrace our love for the Collie all over again next year. Every year it’s written that we can’t imagine it being better, and every year, Madame Gerrie and her crew figure out a way to surprise us again with yet another terrific event. I won’t be asking again how can it get better . . . they will think of something! This year we had the benefit of an extra learning opportunity with the educational Virtues Match being judged by the three national judges, Helga Kane, Dr. William Brokken, and Larry Willeford. Fresh off their April assignments, articulating their knowledge and insight was a treat for spectators and exhibitors alike. CCA Best of Variety breeder/owner Jennifer Laik and professional handler Laurie Jeff Greer shared duties in the Lad Memorial Match. Results are published on page 8. Auctions and promos sales were great and hopefully everybody loaded up on Foundation items for Christmas. Be sure to check the Foundation website www.colliehealth.org for new promotional items. We are currently preparing election materials, which consist of several rounds of voting to elect first, Corporators, then a new Board, and finally new Officers that will take over at the 2012 CCA. Corporators represent the Foundation and are expected to serve in support of events and projects – it’s a noble calling and we hope if you have some time to donate, you’ll sign your “agree to run” card accepting nomination. Board Members and Officers are charged with the day to day management of the CHF’s affairs. You will have a new President next term – I have thoroughly enjoyed serving the Foundation as president these last four years – special thanks to the CHF board and corporators, and committee chairs and continued on Page 2 President’s Message (continued from page 1) members for their support and wisdom that have made many achievements over the last four years possible. I will continue to support the Foundation in any capacity my talents can contribute. The holidays and specialty season are upon us – and we’ll be in Philadelphia before you know it – can’t wait to see the results of your breeding programs at the shows! We are also delighted to thank and announce the donation of a large part of John Honig’s Collie collection. These items will appear in future day and night auctions and on the Foundation’s e-bay account, so keep an eye out! -- Nancy Collie Health Foundation Balance Sheet As of August 31, 2011 ASSETS Current Assets Checking/Savings Bank Of America Operating Bank Of America Money Market Paypal Wachovia - Hilda Rickenbaugh Total Checking/Savings Other Current Assets UBS assets UBS Money Market UBS accts Total Other Current Assets Total Current Assets Other Assets Promo Items Inventory Prepaid Expenses Total Other Assets TOTAL ASSETS LIABILITIES & EQUITY Equity Opening Balance Equity Unrestricted Net Assets Net Income Total Equity TOTAL LIABILITIES & EQUITY $76,636.46 $85,240.87 $23,119.56 $12,863.65 $197,860.54 $149,377.21 $344,874.32 $494,251.53 $692,112.07 $3,767.60 $1,195.60 $4,963.20 $697,075.27 $600,783.81 $33,228.16 $63,063.30 $697,075.27 $697,075.27 2 COLLIES: CITIZENS OF THE WORLD FROM LAD TO LASSIE The 15th Annual Gathering at Sunnybank – August 20-21, 2011 When Stars Collide! Collies are known all around the world through books, movies, and television. Their sweet, protective, gentle and courageous nature is easily recognized by millions across the globe. “Lassie” is universal in every language. While the Gathering at Sunnybank will always honor Lad and all the Terhune collies, this year two amazing stars came together – Lad & Lassie! The world’s most famous dog, Lassie has been a symbol of loyalty, friendship and courage for more than 70 years. The Emmy Award-winning television series, which first aired in 1954, has transcended geographical and generational barriers, bringing Lassie into millions of homes—and hearts—around the world. Today, this four-legged leading lady has to her credit 11 feature films, a radio show, a top-selling all-natural line of dog food and treats, and was even awarded her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. © 2011 Classic Media, LLC. For all the Lassie fans, this amazing star of stage and screen actually came to Sunnybank! Trainers Carol and Chelsea Riggins highlighted Lassie’s acting abilities and, to marry the two generations of famous dogs, Lassie re-enacted a scene from Lad, A Dog to the delight of the entire audience. As always there were the traditional Gathering events with record crowds appearing to take advantage of the very popular Sunnybank Walking Tours. Terhune experts Judy Leathers/Donna McCoy and Marilyn Horowitz/Kathy George teamed up to lead visitors around The Place while J’Aime Crowley treated us to the sounds of some favorite songs accompanied by Susan Chandler on keyboard. The Saturday morning program began with what has become my newest favorite tradition-a special appearance and blessing from Rev. Howard Ball. Judy Leathers, Terhune Sunnybank Memorial head, delivered greetings from Claire Leishman who couldn’t be with us. With deepest thanks to all contributors, Judy announced the dedication of the latest TSM project - the magnificent granite monument at the Lily Pool. If you weren’t at this year’s Gathering, it is a work of art worthy of a special visit to Sunnybank. 4 Kathy George, Terhune Archivist, provided an overview of foreign film editions of the dog stories. She brought with her a number of wonderful film posters for display. Marilyn Horowitz, Terhune champion, Collie Expressions contributor, and best known for the wonderful Sunnybank calendars, provided the history of the “Garden from Everywhere”. Kristina Marshall, Terhune Historian and author of the 2011 Collie Compendium spoke of the influence of dogs from Scotland on the Sunnybank Kennels. The afternoon offered opportunities to obtain CGC and/or Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dog Certifications, a microchip clinic, and the ever-popular Puppy Program with beautiful litters of puppies from the Marnus and Jil Kris/Enchanter lines, hosted by CHF President, Nancy McDonald. Karyn Hahn, of Collie Rescue of New Jersey and member of CCNNJ, organized a touching and tearful but very happy Rescue Parade which gave twenty-two lucky dogs and their wonderful owners a chance to tell their stories and strut their success, proudly wearing their champion ribbons. During the afternoon and throughout the rest of the weekend, famed DJ and Photographer, Ron Sherr, of South Jersey Collie Club, took photos of everyone with Hollywood Star Lassie© at Sunnybank’s beautiful lakeside. What a great keepsake! And, what patience Lassie and everyone had on those long lines. 5 Ron also took some great candid shots during the evening banquet while entertaining us with some great tunes, too. Sunnybank’s dinner at Portobello’s was spectacular. The famous Virtues Match was held on Sunday morning, hosted by collie expert and herself a renowned judge, Royal Rock’s Les Canavan. Profile, Skull, Muzzle, Expression, Outline, Front, Rear, Side Gait were explained and judged by the prestigious 2011 CCA National Judges: Helga Kane of Kanebriar, Larry Willeford of Windcrest, and Dr. William K. Brokken of Foremost, ably assisted by Ring Steward John Buddie of Tartanside. Following the lunch break at Boles’ Bistro, Judge Laurie Jeff Greer judged the Gathering Junior’s Match, declaring Ryan Yaeger 2011’s Best Junior. The traditional Lad of Sunnybank Memorial Match was judged by Jennifer Laik, Colebrae Collies, and Laurie Jeff Greer. Despite a slight rain delay, with John Buddie’s much needed ring adjustment to get underneath the tent, and the guidance of our capable stewards, Maret Halinen and Jean deGruchy, Judges Jenny and Jeffy made their great selections. The lucky winner gets their name engraved on the Sandy Draper Memorial Trophy and gets to take home the miniature version keepsake and the brand-new, color print “Lad A Dog” trophy donated by Kristina Marshall in honor of the movie debut. 6 See the list of all the winners on page 8 and official results and photos of all the winners in Collie Expressions. As you can imagine a great Gathering weekend doesn’t happen by accident. Sincere thanks to the “Madam’s Minions” - those hardworking members of CCNNJ: Ann & Jim Boles, Leigh Cohen, Karen Cassel, Jean deGruchy, Susan, Roy & Cassie DeLorenzo, Michelle Haldy, Karyn Hahn, Tom Hoadley, Norman Markese, Linda Raven, Shannon Schrier, Elizabeth Smith, Candy & Tony Wisnieski, as well as adopted “members” Kim Luikert, Courtney Luikert, Laura & Ron Sherr, Nancy Van Note, Nancy McDonald, Robin Sturgis, Brenda Walker, Katie Skilton and Annie Provenzano! Special thanks to Pati Merrill for designing this year’s logo. Sir Thomas Merrill, aka “Tommy”, delighted everyone and adorned this year’s souvenir t-Shirts and all signage. The original drawing was donated by Pati for the CHF live auction. Dr. Brokken pointed to the lucky winner, Noriko Kato, who took it home with her to Japan. He is surely a “CITIZEN OF THE WORLD”!!! I hope all who came to Sunnybank this year “took home” some special memories. After fifteen years of Sunnybank weekends it is time to take a look back. Join us next year for a retrospective on August 16 & 17, 2012. For those of you who are keeping track, this will be a Memorial Event year at Champion Rock.
