Giving Pets a Voice - Animal Protective Foundation
53 Maple Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 • 518.374.3944 • www.animalprotective.org Giving Pets a Voice Seconds in the spotlight can be the ticket home Champ* was a big, handsome pit mix with a beautiful brindle coat. He was a gentle giant with soulful eyes. But he never seemed to settle in at the shelter. When staff and volunteers interacted with him, he was often distracted and distant and would continually look to the door or the window. Our Animal Welfare Manager called Champ’s “owner searching” the most extreme she had ever seen. Champ and another dog were given up as the result of a divorce. The other dog was adopted, but Champ was always overlooked, perhaps because no one passing by his kennel ever felt a connection with him. When a pet has been with us for two months, they become a member of our “Lonely Hearts Club.” After all that time, both staff and volunteers were becoming increasingly concerned about Champ’s apparent depression. We all wanted desperately for him to find a new home. One staff member requested that he be taken to Channel 6 for our Tuesday pet segment on the noon news with Liz Bishop in hopes that someone would be inspired to give him a chance. Then there was Robin, another Lonely Heart pet. She was always happy and loved to interact with anyone who was interested. She was a 2-year-old pit bull with a sagging belly that showed she had given birth to multiple litters. This may have been a turnoff to some, but to us she was beautiful. She was found as a stray, probably abandoned after she was no longer needed as a breeder. Robin had her big moment with Steve Caporizzo on Pet Connection, which is often the magic bullet for pets in need of adoption. Steve was able to show off her wonderful personality and shortly thereafter, Robin found her forever home. The power of a single media mention cannot be overestimated. When one of our pets has a shot at the spotlight, we don’t select the one who is the prettiest or most adoptable, but the one who we know will make a wonderful companion and has been overlooked. Here in the Capital Region, we are fortunate to have the support of pet-friendly media outlets willing to help promote our pets at no charge. We couldn’t afford to do it otherwise. In addition to our TV spots on CBS 6 and WTEN’s Pet Connection, our local cable station highlights a pet every month on the Schenectady Today show. Every week Albany Broadcasting stations, including B95.5, FLY 92.3, Magic 590, JAMS 96.3, and 104.9 The Cat each feature a Pet of the Week from the APF and the various morning shows do a wonderful job of painting pictures of those pets on air. They also post their photos online. Volume 30 No. 1 The Gazette has begun a monthly full-color page which features pets from ours and other shelters, and is sponsored by local advertisers. We are most grateful to all of the businesses that participate. We have also benefited from publicity by local bloggers. Recently Sarah Hinman Ryan, author of the Times Union “Dogs” blog, took the time to visit us to write about and shoot a video on another great dog, Roscoe, who had been with us for far too long. Happily, he too has found a loving home. We can’t always attribute an adoption to a specific appearance, but it all helps to raise awareness about the fact that there are so many remarkable, loving pets in need of homes. Other times, we know exactly when it hits the mark. Immediately after Champ was on TV, we were contacted by his former owner. She had no idea that her ex-husband had surrendered both dogs to the shelter following their divorce. Champ’s reunion with her was stirring. As soon as he laid eyes on her, his demeanor changed from aloof to excited. His whole body literally quivered with joy as he jumped on her and licked her face as her tears rolled down. For us, those 30 seconds of TV exposure were worth far more than ad time during the Superbowl. *Name was changed for this story. SPRING 2012 INSIDE THIS ISSUE … >Be Kind to Animals Week Contest > Second Annual Tails by Twilight >APF Receives PetSmart Charities Spay/Neuter Grants OUR MISSION The purpose of the APF is to address pet overpopulation and animal suffering through education and appropriate action, to enhance human/animal relationships, and to provide care to animals in need. From the Executive Director People often ask me how many animals are in the shelter and my answer is generally the same as every other animal shelter or rescue group – we are full. When we started doing cat adoptions at PetSmart in Niskayuna in 2010, I foolishly thought this was the answer to our prayers; that now we would have some breathing room. I was sadly mistaken. Don’t get me wrong – in that first year 550 cats were adopted from PetSmart in addition to 515 cats from our Maple Avenue location. It was a great year for adoptions and we were thrilled! But our empty cages were quickly filled with an additional 400 unwanted and abandoned cats in 2011. It’s no different with the dog population. Last year the APF took in 100 more stray dogs than in the prior year. This problem of pet overpopulation is the result of many causes but, as a community of caring citizens, we have the ability and the obligation to reduce the number of homeless pets and needless suffering. It is abundantly clear that the only way to stem the endless tide of unwanted litters is at its source – and that is unaltered pets. The APF has been dedicated to its mission of reducing pet overpopulation for over 80 years. Through our Community Spay/Neuter Program we have provided low-cost spay/neuter services to nearly 15,000 cats since 2006. But that’s not enough. As many of you know, we are in the process of fundraising for a much needed expansion of this vital program. Those who attended our Tails by Twilight gala last year had a chance to preview the architectural plans for a dedicated spay/neuter clinic. This clinic will allow our skilled veterinary staff to relocate from our cramped surgical suite to a more expansive space and will also increase our ability to provide spay/neuter services for dogs. We estimate that construction and equipment costs for the clinic will total upwards of $700,000 of which $245,000 has been raised through grants and donations. But the clock is ticking as we cannot begin until all funds are raised, and some of the grant monies must be used within a specific timeframe. So support is needed right now. One way to help is to join us on May 17 for our Second Annual Tails by Twilight event, to be held at Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia. All proceeds will be used to fund the new clinic. I guarantee you a thoroughly enjoyable evening of delectable food, great music, and the company of many caring animal lovers, just like you. This project holds so much promise for the welfare of animals in our community. I hope that you will share our passion and join with us to bring this clinic to life. For the animals, Rosalie R. Join us for a magical evening in support of our Community Spay/Neuter Clinic Thursday, May 17 6:00-10:00 pm Glen Sanders Mansion, Scotia Guest Emcee Liz Bishop, CBS 6 News Anchor Featuring • Cocktails and an Array of Dinner Stations • Music by Grand Central Station • Silent & Live Auctions and Special Surprises! Our second annual “Tails by Twilight” will be held on Thursday, May 17 at Glen Sanders Mansion. Last year’s event was a sellout with 200 guests and raised over $40,000 for the APF’s Community Spay/Neuter Clinic. This year’s venue will accommodate over 300 and raise even more for this vital program. Business or cocktail attire is appropriate. Joining us in this effort are our Honorary Chairs, Marie DeBrocky, owner of Head to Tail Pet Wellness Center in Niskayuna, and Mona Golub, VP for Public Relations and Consumer & Marketing Services for Price Chopper Supermarkets. We welcome the return of Liz Bishop, CBS 6 news anchor, as our emcee and the sensational Grand Central Station band. The evening will feature Glen Sanders’ legendary cuisine, exciting silent and live auctions and some other surprises. Since 2006, the APF’s Community Spay/Neuter Program has provided nearly 15,000 surgeries for cats belonging to Capital Region pet owners who otherwise could not have afforded to have them altered. While the demand for low-cost spay/neuter for both dogs and cats is great, our current facility cannot accommodate the need. All proceeds from this event will be dedicated to expanding the APF’s surgical facility. It’s Cool to be Kind to Animals” Please join us in our efforts to teach children about the importance of kindness and respect toward animals and to each other. National Be Kind to Animals Week is dedicated to raising awareness about treating animals with kindness and respect. The APF will again celebrate this special week with our 10th Annual Children’s Poster and Essay contest. It’s a wonderful opportunity to teach children about the importance of kindness and responsibility toward animals. There are far too many instances all around us today of people being mean both to each other and to animals and thinking that bullying is acceptable. Animal shelters like ours see cruelty and abuse each and every day. We need to get the message across to all, children and adults alike, that it’s not okay to be a bully to either people or to animals. Remember the Golden Rule, “Treat others as you want them to treat you.” When you do this, what happens? People get along. They help each other. They are considerate, gentle and respectful. It’s easy to do and it makes the world a much nicer place. Either write an interesting essay or poem or design an informative poster that illustrates the important theme of kindness to all. Age Categories Entries from students in grades 1 through 5 may be submitted by schools or individuals. Judges will select winners from each grade. Posters Posters must be no smaller than 11” x 17” and no larger than 18” x 24” on white or buff paper. Crayon, pencil, watercolor, tempera, acrylic, magic marker, and colored pencils may be used. Essays Essays must be no more than 200 words in length. Theme “Don’t be a Bully! It’s Cool to be Kind to Animals” Identification All entries must include student’s name, grade, school address, teacher’s name, e-mail and phone. If entry is being submitted by a parent, please include parent’s name, address, e-mail and phone. This information may be written on the entries (on the front of essays and the back of posters), or an entry form may be attached. See entry form below. Tips and Hints Essays and posters will be judged on originality, demonstration of the theme, and creativity. Students making posters are encouraged to fill the page and make it colorful. In essays, spelling and mechanics will be considered. Deadline: Friday, April 13, 2012 Please mail or deliver to: The Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave., Scotia, NY 12302 Prizes! Entries will be judged within their own grade level. All winners will receive prizes and be invited, along with their families, teachers and principals, to an awards reception on Monday, May 7 at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady. Winners will be notified via teachers or parents during the last week of April. Entries cannot be returned. All entries become the property of the APF and may be displayed or used for promotional purposes. In February, the “Beat the Heat” promotion helped to fund 180 cat spays for Schenectady County residents at just $20. Appointments filled up within just days, indicating the great need for lower-cost opportunities. In August, the “Primp Your Pit” program will provide up to 80 spay and neuter surgeries at $20 for pit bull/mix owners of Schenectady County. More information will be available on that in the coming months. Surgeries will be provided through the APF’s Community Spay/Neuter Program. This program is unique because of the important role of each of our four partner organizations: Cat Tales Rescue, Robin’s Nest, Noah’s Kingdom and the Montgomery County SPCA. Their volunteer-driven involvement makes it possible to eliminate virtually all administrative costs for the program, keeping spay/neuter costs to the lowest possible amount. At $80 per surgery, this program pays for itself, which it critical to its continuation. However, it is still too costly for the poorest in our community. Expansion of this program will accomplish several critical needs. It will increase surgical capacity, enabling the program to achieve maximum efficiency and bring the per surgery cost down. It will also provide the space needed to perform dog surgeries. Additional subsidies, such this generous grant, will allow us to further reduce fees so that we can meet the needs of pet owners who need it most. Sal’s Does it Again! The caring customers and staff of Sal’s Quality Market on Guilderland Avenue in Schenectady once again met the challenge and earned Top Dog honors for 2011 as Dog House Merchant of the Year. Caroll Weakley, longtime employee and “chief fundraiser” upped the goal for this year and her customers came through by raising over $2,100 for our spay/neuter programs. We are grateful to Sal’s and all of our dog house merchants, as well as everyone who drops their spare change into our little purple dog house boxes. Customer Daina Bond adds a donation to the dog house box as employee Caroll Weekly looks on. Spare change from Sal’s Market added up to $2,100 for the APF pets in 2011! Remembering Shelter Manager Ralph Marrero Dog + Training = Happy Dog and Happy Owner In October of 2011 Ralph Marrero joined the APF as our new shelter manager. Ralph was hired for his qualities of leadership, compassion and enthusiasm for taking on this challenging new role. Although an animal lover, the animal sheltering field was brand new to Ralph, and he embraced the challenge of learning its many facets by fully immersing himself in the job. Not more than seven weeks later, we received the tragic news that Ralph had died suddenly of a heart attack. We were shocked and deeply saddened. While Ralph did not have the chance to leave his mark on the organization, he certainly left it on our hearts. His warmth and kindness is missed and will be remembered by all of us whose lives intersected with his, if only for a short time. The APF’s dog training program features qualified trainers, small classes and only positive training methods. Upcoming classes: • Puppy • Basic Manners 101 and 102 • Canine Good Citizen • Tricks & Games • AgiliO For further information and class schedule, visit animalprotective.org. or call 374-3944, ext. 118.
