Anniversary Gala Raises $40K
for Spay/Neuter Clinic

on May 7. Honorary Chairs Jeff
and Kara Haraden, owners of
Mohawk Honda, were joined by
our guest emcee, Liz Bishop of
CBS 6, in presenting a fun evening
of great food, music and auctions,
all in support of our Community
Spay/Neuter Program.
Highlights of the night included
a video produced by APF staffers
Ramon Pruisscher and Richard
Schellinger and a very “lively” live
auction with celebrity auctioneer
LeGrand Serras. But the show
stopper was when Grand Central
Station broke into a beautiful
rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes
Off of You” and serenaded an
adorable litter if kittens.

enhance human/animal
relationships, and to
provide care to animals
in need.
From the Executive Director
Our Dream Takes Shape
It has been nearly two years in the making and
I am so pleased to present the plan for our new
Community Spay/Neuter Clinic! The APF has long
been committed to spay/neuter as the best way to
address pet overpopulation. We currently provide
roughly 3,000 low-cost surgeries annually, in
addition to 1,000 surgeries for our shelter pets. Our
present surgical suite limits our ability to do more.
Once our new 1,500 sq. ft. clinic is in place, we will
be able to consolidate all surgery in this building
(which will sit to the far right side of our property
as you face the shelter) and have the ability to
perform low-cost surgery for cats and dogs on
a much larger scale.
When will we break ground? Once we have the
funding, which is estimated at $600,000. We now
have $190,000 dedicated to this project through
fundraisers such as our gala, private donations, and
other allocated monies. As we are going to press
with this newsletter, we have just received word of a
$100,000 grant through a private foundation. You
will be hearing more about this tremendous gift
soon. That puts us half way to our goal!

Does your child talk about being a veterinarian someday? Our most popular children’s
program returns this summer giving children an opportunity to learn from our guest
vets and some special “patients” from the shelter. Pre-register and pre-pay to hold

share with our faithful friends, while helping the APF
continue to help our community’s animals.

NEW Canine Program
by Kim Bellizzi, Volunteer Coordinator
When I became Volunteer Coordinator, one of my goals
was to organize a team of volunteers to give the dogs more time out
of their kennels daily. They would socialize, exercise, train and give
lots of belly rubs. Shelter life is stressful, especially when we are full,
which has become more the rule than the exception. Many dogs and
cats wait weeks and even months to be adopted.
I remember how the staff and dogs
welcomed me when I volunteered as a
dog socializer. It was amazing how the
disposition and attitude of a dog changed
after running around, playing ball or just
soaking up some sunshine. This type of
interaction contributes to the mental wellbeing of a dog and gives us a little more

say that we now have a group of amazingly
dedicated people that work with our dogs regularly.
They are our Canine Companions. Not only do they work with the
dogs at the shelter, they also participate in adoption, offsite clinics
and some will be fostering. Fostering gives a dog an even better
chance of adoption as we are able to learn more about the dog’s true
personality when in a home setting, especially the very shy ones.
Tina is my own “foster failure.” She growled at people as they passed
by her kennel and was painfully timid when outside of it. She had
no chance of getting adopted while being kenneled. After just two
months Tina is a happy, loving dog and my family and I cherish

Two Decades of Training
Pet Academy has been providing various levels of dog training
over the past 20 years. We have learned a lot about dog behavior
from our shelter dogs and we have tailored our classes to best serve
our dog-loving community. Many of these dogs are in our shelter
because their owners had no guidance. Pet Academy offers the
following courses to provide that guidance and to help achieve
harmony between dogs and their families.

Just wanted to thank you for all your

brother Bear and has been absolutely
perfect ... No accidents, no chewing other than the dog toys and rawhides,
she’s been great with Maddie and is just
