The Power of the Purr
There is no denying that pet owners have a strong bond with their furry loved one. But sometimes the human-animal bond transcends companionship.
Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. Adopting a pet from a shelter not only
saves an animal’s life, but is also good for our own well-being, as research shows that owning a pet
has many positive psychological and physical health benefits. The animals adopted from shelters
seem to know you’ve saved their lives, and they typically treat their rescuers with lifelong loyalty
and affection.
Below is a letter from an APF adopter that shows only too well the important role our pets play in
our lives.
In the fall of 2010, my husband
and I saw a report on TV that
28 orange and white cats had
been abandoned, duct taped in
moving boxes, and left on the
APF’s front lawn. They were
called the “pumpkin patch
cats”.
Alex would sit on my lap for
long periods and dedicated
his time to stay with me in
bed. He kept me company,
purred, kept me warm, and
never left my side the entire
time.
When we arrived at your shelter, there were only a couple
still waiting to be adopted.
My husband looked into the
eyes of one of the shortest, oldest, and stubbiest of the bunch
and said “that is the one.”
“The one,” whose name was
Alex, became my biggest companion during one of the most
difficult situations that I will
ever have in my life.
By a miracle of science, after
being told that there was
no way my husband and I
could have children, we went
through a procedure that
enabled us to become pregnant
with a set of twins.
Because of the difficulty and
the high risk, I was immediately put on bed rest from the
very beginning.
After six months the worst
happened and our precious
babies were born at 22 weeks
gestation; they lived for
many hours, and then became
angels.
While I grieved, again, Alex
stayed with me as my constant companion. As I began
to heal, he would take to himself and join me only at night
on the couch for snuggle time.
Today after being with us for
four years, we said goodbye.
His belly had become filled
with fluid and it was only a
matter of time.
It was hard to say goodbye, as
he is a connection to that time
I had with my babies. He was
my friend, my companion.
My mother told me, as I
called with the news, that
“Alex went through a rough
beginning because he knew he
would be needed for something
important. That important
thing was to be with you when
you needed him. Now he is
once again with those beautiful babies that he would not
leave for six months.”
I am writing to tell you of this
amazing cat that came into
our lives from your organization. He changed it in so
many ways and affected it
more than any pet probably
can affect a life.

He truly was a gift beyond
anything that anyone could
ask for.

Dear Friends,
As I settle into this new role and the year turns, I am awestruck by
your support and enthusiasm, and that of the larger community for
the 4,000+ animals in our care each year.
You send cash donations and credit card gifts - and for that we are
most grateful. These are most helpful contributions that are put
to work, day in and day out to care for the cats, dogs, rabbits, and
guinea pigs that rely on us to assure their good health and find
them a loving home.
Did you know that it costs about $5,000 per day to run the animal
shelter, including the veterinary medicine, staff and supplies, the
animal care team, the enrichment and adoption programs and
the low cost spay and neuter clinic? Your gifts directly benefit the
animals in all of these ways.
We witness your strong desire to help by your donations of food,
bedding, treats and toys. Thank you for these most wonderful gifts
which are all used in the care of the animals at the APF. Through
these gifts you enable us to keep the animals nourished, warm, cozy
and engaged. We are so appreciative and encourage you to please
keep us in mind for these in-kind donations several times a year.
Did you know that we are particularly busy on the first of each
month? Those who are changing residences do so, for the most
part, on or near the first of the month; hence we typically experience our largest number of animal surrenders at this time. As our
population expands, so does our need for food, toys, and staffing
for animal care and sanitation. Our monthly giving program is one
way to help us keep up with the demand.
The APF volunteers are an exceptional bunch! As I watch you in
action, I see the love and passion that drives you. A more determined group does not exist. Each and every day you improve the
plight of homeless animals in our community.
Our cat socializers offer comfort, love and exercise to our kitties. Dog walkers persevere despite wind, cold and snow to ensure the dogs get a chance to run, play, jump and cuddle. And,
near and dear to my heart, are our dedicated bunny volunteers
who regularly ensure the rabbits have time to hip hop around
the Education Room and have plenty of boxes and chewable
items to keep them happy and bright. Our adoption volunteers help to place all of these lovable creatures in good homes.
Then there are those who work behind the scenes doing mountains of laundry and dishes, answering phones and working in
our administrative offices. All of these very important roles are
essential to the care of our animals and we are grateful.
The Tails by Twilight Gala Committee is hard at work preparing an exceptional benefit event for Thursday, May 21st at the
Glen Sanders Mansion. Led by Event Chairs Sondra Stephens
and Anthony Kaczmarek of Sondra’s Fine Jewelry, an amazingly talented group of volunteers have assembled an evening
of glamour and surprises for you in addition to a tasty Tuscan
menu and lots of wonderful silent and live auction items.
Michele Riggi is our esteemed Honorary Chair and we will
announce our Animal Advocacy Awardees that evening. Please
join us for this fabulous party for the paws!
We all know the phrase, “it takes a village…” and nothing is
closer to the truth at the APF. When we combine the energies
and love of our veterinary and animal care staff with that of
our one thousand plus volunteers and donors, we have joined
together as a loving community to care for our animals in need.
It is a privilege to be amongst you, and I look forward to working side by side in support of the APF’s mission. Thank you for

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Basic Manners 101 covers just that - basic good manners such as
sit, down, wait, stay, come, leave-it, and walking calmly on a loose
leash.
Basic Manners 102 addresses issues such as door dashing, pulling
on leash, impolite greetings and more. You and your dog will work
through distractions in many forms, achieving solid stays and
sharper recalls at longer distances and improving his focus on you.
Puppy Playtime is your opportunity to get your puppy socialized
with other puppies and people. No training – just strictly a social
time for your pup. We will introduce different scenarios for the
puppies to expose them to our world of various sights, sounds, and
items.
Canine Good Citizen will prepare you and your dog for Canine
Good Citizen certification. The test is administered by a certified
CGC evaluator. No prior training is required.
Nosey Dogs - Your dog will have fun as he sniffs out hidden foods,
toys, and scented objects. Using his nose will help build confidence,
focus, stimulate his mind, and channel his energy.
ANIMAL SURRENDER
We accept unwanted animals from
Schenectady County residents. A contribution of $25 per animal is requested to offset the cost of
care that we provide, an average
of $200 per animal.

Puppy Pre-School provides a foundation for good behavior of
puppies through socialization and confidence-building exercises. It
also addresses issues such as chewing, housebreaking, crate training
and more.

The APF is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
humane society funded by donations.
It is not a municipal agency and
receives no city, county, or state
funding. The APF is not part of any
national humane organization and does
not receive funding from them.
Tricks & Games is mentally challenging, stimulating and fun for
you and your dog. Each week you will teach your dog a new trick
and play a game.
Walking Workshop is dedicated to just walking your dog. We will
assess you and your dog with the goal of training him/her to walk
calmly with a loose leash by your side.
How do I introduce a new cat into my
household?
Introducing a new cat can be a little time consuming and requires
some patience, but is very rewarding long-term if you follow some
simple guidelines. The first week your new cat should be isolated.
This allows all of the cats to adjust to the new smells and sounds
while also allowing each to have their own safe haven. Provide a
healthy cat environment for each cat. Include food, water, litter
box (the rule of thumb is to provide one more box then cats in
the house), a safe comfortable place to sleep and familiar territory
(scratching post). The second week you can start to exchange bedding getting them more used to the smell of the new cat. The third
week short supervised introductions, such as feedings together.
Each cat will react to these situations in their own way. Friendly,
well-socialized cats may adapt to each other rapidly, while other
cats may take months to completely adapt. There are pheromone
products, such as Feliway and calming treats, such as Composure
treats that, if used in conjunction with this slow introduction, may
ease some initial tension. The more you prepare and allow for this
slow introduction the smoother the transition can go.
why is my dog’s breath so bad?
The most common cause of bad breath is periodontal disease
caused by plaque (bacteria). Periodontal disease is painful. Bad
breath requires a visit to the veterinarian for further investigation. If
it cannot be determined on exam what the cause is, your veterinarian may recommend blood work to rule out any medical concerns.
If the blood work is within normal limits, your veterinarian will
likely recommend a dental procedure. The stage of periodontal
disease will determine what procedures need to be performed. If
it is early periodontal disease a simple cleaning may be all that is
needed. If it is more advanced and there is infection and bone loss,
then extractions may be necessary. There are many ways to prevent
periodontal disease and maintain a healthy mouth for your pet;
treats, prescription diets, oral rinses, water additives and regular
dental cleaning. If you are not safely able to care for your pet’s
teeth, ask your veterinarian what he/she recommends.

My Internship at at the APF

Working at an animal shelter is an amazing and
eye-opening experience that I believe everybody
who is going into the fields of animal science
or welfare should have. Over the four weeks of
my January term internship at the APF I helped
out with daily tasks at both the shelter and spay
and neuter clinic. I got to shadow many different people over the course of the month and
got a sense of all of the different jobs that go
into making an exemplary shelter run smoothly.

During my time at the APF, I learned that the
animals always come first, and that a good
shelter always strives to improve the welfare
of its dependents. I saw happy adoptions and
heartbreak, and through it all the kind and caring staff that I was so privileged to work with
did their best to treat each animal, no matter
how unruly, with respect and humanity.
Thank you to the awesome staff at the Animal
Protective Foundation for giving me this amazing experience! I learned so much in just a few
weeks, and I’ll be back to visit soon!

the brim many times - earning the local business the title of 2014

Nora Tanner Hello APF,
Reese (formerly Coco) is a happy spoiled
pig, and our family loves him to death. He's
a photogenic little guy, that's for sure! I
recently bought him a fleece blanket that
he absolutely loves to snuggle up in. He is
the sweetest little dude and I love him like
crazy. I'd like to eventually get him a little
brother so he has a buddy to hang out with
while the humans are gone, so I'll be checking back to see if any more male pigs come
to the shelter.

Hi Everyone,
Three months ago I became the proud adopted mom to a little guy named Rodney. I went
into the PetSmart at Mohawk Commons, my regular weekly trip, for supplies for my cat at
home (Princess girl). There was Rodney, all curled up, lots of extra toes and the sweetest face.
As soon as I held him I knew he was going home with me; he immediately began purring and
buried his face in my arms. He quickly made himself at home and showed off his personality
within just a couple days; 90% rambunctious and 10% a big baby. I renamed him "Remmy"
and he and Princess girl are now cuddle buddies. Thank you for bringing Remmy into our
lives :) Thank you for the wonderful work your organization does for animals in need.
