The power of Paul’s testimony that everything is junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see it?” we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked lines. And there is no straighter line than that between the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can’t beat this kind of good news. In your kindness we ask you to remember all the sick members of our parish, as well as those who reside in nursing homes and senior facilities. We ask you also to pray for our beloved dead. This past Tuesday morning, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Paul Bootkoski, who reached retirement age this past July, and appointed Msgr. James Checchio, a priest of the Diocese of Camden and former Rector of the North American College (the American Seminary) in Rome as the fifth bishop of Metuchen. A short bio about Bishop-Elect Checchio can be found in this weekend’s bulletin. Let us be one in prayer both for Bishop-Elect Checchio and for Bishop Bootkoski as he begins his well-deserved retirement. 40 Hours of Mercy Once again, our Lenten parish mission “Forty Hours of Mercy” was a spiritually rich time for our parish. I was very encouraged to see so many people attending Evening Prayer each evening and by those who made time to spend in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament both day and night during the mission. My gratitude goes out to you all. I especially want to acknowledge our preachers Fr. Keith Cervine and Fr. Peter Cebulka, C.O. for their fine homilies, Christina Blalock and our choir for their talents and hard world preparing for Evening Prayer, and Mrs. Jane McElroy, Mrs. Vivian Cline for organizing our adorers. Thank you! Palm Sunday and Holy Week Next Sunday, March 20, is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord and the beginning of Holy Week. Please see the bulletin, webpage, or Facebook page for detailed information on all the events of holy week, which I will include in this column next week. The Solemn Entrance and Procession of Palms will take place at the 10:30 am Mass next Sunday. Those who wish to participate in this are kindly asked to gather in the Alpha-Omega garden by 10:20 am. Missionary of Mercy Reflection I am in the process of writing a reflection on my experiences in Rome for the commissioning of the missionaries of mercy last month. This article will be published in an upcoming edition of our diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Spirit. With Gratitude…… Many thanks to Bishop Bootkoski for his 14 years of service and dedication to our diocese as its shepherd. May many blessings continue to be bestowed on him during his well-deserved retirement. The Most Rev. Paul Gregory Bootkoski was named the Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen by Pope John Paul II on January 4, 2002. He was installed as the Fourth Bishop of Metuchen on March 19, 2002. Page 5 Congratulations to Bishop-Elect Checchio. On Tuesday, March 8, 2016, Pope Francis appointed Msgr. James F. Checchio, a priest of the Diocese of Camden and the former rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome, as the fifth Bishop of Metuchen. Bishop-elect Checchio will be ordained a bishop and installed formally in the Diocese of Metuchen on May 3, 2016. Until then, Bishop Bootkoski, who has been the Bishop of Metuchen since 2002, will oversee the diocese. A native of New Jersey, Bishop-elect Checchio was born in Camden April 21, 1966, one of four children of James and Helen Checchio. He was raised in Collingswood, where he attended St. John School, and went on to Pope Paul VI High School in Haddon Township. Most recently, Bishop-elect Checchio served as rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome from January 2006 to January 2016, after serving as vice rector there for two and a half years. Prior to that, he held various roles in the Diocese of Camden. Bishop-elect Checchio served as secretary to Bishop James T. McHugh, vice chancellor, director of communications, moderator of the curia, and episcopal vicar for administration of the diocese. He also served in the Tribunal and as a member of the College of Consultors, Presbyteral Council, Investment Committee and Diocesan Finance Council. He served as parochial vicar at St. Agnes Parish, Blackwood, and assisted at St. Jude Parish, Blackwood; and summer parochial vicar at St. Peter Parish, Merchantville, and St. Peter Celestine Parish, Cherry Hill. Bishop-elect Checchio was appointed a Chaplain to His Holiness by Pope John Paul II in 2000, granting him the title of monsignor; and, was appointed a Prelate of Honor by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011, a papal honor bestowed on diocesan priests. Bishop-elect Checchio received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He studied at North American College, Rome, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Camden, N.J. on June 20, 1992 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden. He holds a Masters of Business Administration Degree from LaSalle University, Philadelphia; and Doctorate of Canon Law and Bachelor of Sacred Theology degrees from University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Rome. - Press Release/Bio from the Diocese of Metuchen Page 6 Commission for Liturgy and Worship Ministers of the Liturgy We acknowledge with appreciation the following Liturgical Ministers who will serve at next weekend’s Masses: March 19th and 20th 5:15 Mass Altar Servers: Ashlyn Jess, Kaleigh Jess 10:30 Mass Readers: Dominick Batkowski, Ann Mulroy Readers: Luis Alves, JoAnne Coppola Eucharistic Ministers: Martha & Tom Eckert, Marilyn Fabiano, Jo Ann Fabiano, Gina & Teo Gonzales 7:30 Mass Eucharistic Ministers: Lisa Holley, Michele Olson, Tom Kelly, Brenda Garcia, John Shanagher Altar Servers: Matt Parayil, Jos Parayil Readers: Ron Haikes, Ginny Hayden 12:00 Mass Eucharistic Ministers: Ian Carmody, Joan Dobrosky, Ray DiDominico, Heather Lynch 9:00 Mass Altar Servers: John Grebeck, Sean Kelly, Greg Kelly Altar Servers: Kitty Blood, Erika Wasterman, Spenser Russo Altar Servers: Chloe Blanton, Gabby Mouridy Readers: Janice Rippas, David Gallo Eucharistic Ministers: Joyce & Dominick Coppola, Lidia Augello, Mary Ann Bryant, Joe Filep, Jeannette Merritt Readers: Noah Jerris, Dan McDonald Eucharistic Ministers: Margaret Blood, Lynn Ruezinsky, Donna & Nick Villanova, Mai & Rich Corvi MONTHLY “MERCY CHALLENGE” In an effort as a parish to embody the Pope’s call to live out God’s mercy in our daily lives, throughout this Jubilee year, we will call out a monthly challenge to our parishioners that speak to the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Page 8 Stewardship Council News The Stewardship Tree Our parish ministries often have a need for some short-term assistance on specific projects, but find it difficult to find people to help. The Stewardship Tree is a great way to take a “test drive” with a ministry. If you wondered what a particular ministry is like, but did not feel you could commit for a significant length of time, the Stewardship Tree lets you dip your toe into the water of community service. The Stewardship Council is pleased to announce that the Stewardship Tree will return again for the Lenten season. It will contain a variety of brief, specific service opportunities to enhance your spiritual preparations for Easter. Each “leaf” on the tree contains a brief description of the volunteer opportunity and a contact name/ number for information. Aligned to 2016’s designation as a Jubilee Year of Mercy, the volunteer opportunities will be aligned to either the corporal or spiritual works of mercy. To encourage participation by parishioners of all ages, there will be “leaves” designated for youth and different “leaves” for adults. Please take this opportunity to choose the volunteer activity you wish to participate in and take the entire “leaf” home as a reminder. Parishioners in need of assistance are invited to place a “leaf” on the tree detailing their request for assistance. The Stewardship Tree will be in the narthex on the following weekends during Lent: This weekend, March 1213. Let your imagination be your guide, or use instruction sheets provided, to build your own K’Nex project! All children, ages 3-10+, along with their parents and/or grandparents, are invited to work together to build (and keep) a special K’nex item, display their creation in our Project Parade, and win a fun door prize! So bring an adult and join us at 1:45 PM on Saturday, March 19th in the cafeteria of the Parish Center. Invite a friend to come along! YBC provides a faith-based learning environment for our parish children, where they practice creative thinking, problem solving and life-long social skills. Sessions are held one Saturday per month and all children must be accompanied by an adult, who stays and works with their young builder(s) on the K’nex project of their choice. Adult volunteers are always appreciated, especially for setup at 1:00 pm, registration at 1:45 pm, and cleanup from 3:30 to 4:00 pm. Confirmation candidates and scouts are eligible to earn service hours at YBC, but they must register in advance with Debra Kurtz or Martha Eckert. Separated, Divorced & Beyond Ministry A healing ministry for anyone who is experiencing the loss of a spouse through separation, changes in family dynamics, emotional turmoil of change, and grieving a marriage. The journey of divorce is rocky and filled with unexpected challenges. This ministry welcomes all who want to begin the healing process of forgiveness. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, this ministry will be most helpful for anyone who desires a deeper relationship with Jesus while on this journey. Weekly meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the Library. For more information and to register please contact the Parish Office or email [email protected] The Parish Prayer Chain is a group of Parishioners that regularly pray for your needs. Your intention will be prayed for by both Chains and kept strictly confidential. If you have an interest in becoming a member of the Prayer Chain, please call Joan.
