INTRODUCTION / WELCOME
Dear friends,
After a remarkable event last year, I would like to welcome all of you to the 27th Baja
Portalegre 500, organised by Automóvel Club de Portugal.
Behind us stands more than a quarter of a century of unparalleled history, with a track
record which includes the best international riders and drivers, thus assigning this event
with a credibility which only the most prestigious competitions can achieve.
ACP has continuously sought to increase the sources of interest of its events, never sparing efforts so that,
year after year, the sportive and organisational levels of a reference event in the world of cross country, as is
the Baja Portalegre 500, can achieve a paramount level of visibility.
ACP’s constant commitment places the Baja Portalegre 500, once again, on the calendars of the FIA World Cup
for Cross Country Rallies of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), as well as of the World Cup of Bajas
of the International Federation of Motorcycling (FIM), championships which see their seasons come to an end,
once more, with our event. This is a fact that stresses not only the international projection of the competition,
but which will also bring to Portugal the greatest international names of cross country racing.
It is with this spirit, and thinking about the future, that ACP opens the event to the younger ones for the third
year in a row, with another edition of the Mini Baja. This is a competition thought for those who are giving the
first steps of their two-wheel career in off-road, an opportunity not only to gain important experience, but
also to shine before their own idols. At the same time, and as is the case in other ACP events, the Baja
Portalegre 500 embraces FIA Action for Road Safety’s commitment to reduce road deaths globally.
We must also thank our sponsors – Portalegre City Council, BP and Hertz – as well as the collaboration of the
City Councils of Abrantes, Alter do Chão, Avis, Crato, Fronteira, Gavião, Nisa, Ponte de Sôr and Sousel, and, for
the first time this year, Alentejo Tourism, through QREN (National Strategic Reference Framework) and the EU
support.
We also count on the collaboration of the National Guard (GNR), the Fire Brigade of Portalegre District, and
the local councils of Amieira do Tejo, Chança, Cunheira, Monte da Pedra, Sousel and Tolosa, as well as on the
support of Ibermedia, IGEO, SNB, Termas da Fadagosa de Nisa, Federação Portuguesa de Caçadores, Fonte
Viva, Rádio Portalegre (104,5) and the newspaper A Bola.
We are further grateful for the support of all the members of the organisation. Special thanks are due to
landowners for the support given by allowing the race to cross their estates. This collaboration is the secret of
our success and the reason for the longevity of this race.
For all these reasons, we expect we can welcome you among us for the 27th Baja Portalegre 500.

HISTORY
Brief History of the Event
The Baja of Portalegre was the first cross country event held in Portugal, in June 1987, based in Portalegre city.
In fact, Clube Aventura, headed by José Megre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver, had this event in mind since 1983,
but it took him almost four years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and authorization from
the local authorities. Dr. Miranda Calha, today a member of Parliament and, at that time Minister of Sports,
was behind this idea.
100 cars and more than 100 bikes entered the first Baja Portalegre, at that time called Rali Maratona de
Portalegre and sponsored by Finicisa.
The event was run on a circuit of 350 km to be done twice with no stops. Heavy rains and mud made the event
a remarkable challenge for cars and bikes.
The second and third edition, were held on the following two years, where entries and mud conditions
doubled. On the memorable 4 th edition in 1989, there were 250 cars and 450 bikes but only 10% of the
competitors finished! It was really amazing, besides the conditions!
Since the first year, bikes were represented by many international riders, even the best of them, who came
from around the world just to join Portalegre. From Serge Bacou, Thierry Charbonnier, Gilles Lalay, Stephane
Peterhansel, David Castera, Cyril Esquirol, Richard Sainct, Alain Perez, Thierry Magnaldi, and many others have
participated in this event.
But only in 1995 and 1996, foreigner riders reached the podium, as it was the case of Richard Sainct and Alain
Perez.

The Event’s evolution
1987
1988
The 1st edition of the event under the name Rali Maratona de Portalegre Finicisa, run with
2 laps on 350 km itinerary.
2nd edition with 2 laps on a 400 km itinerary (800 Km Finicisa – Portalegre)
1989
The event was run on a single lap of 500 km, under the name – 500 km Cerveja Sagres
Portalegre.
1990
On the bikes, the race changed to one rider per bike. Entries rose to 250 cars and 450
bikes and an identical figure was run on the following three years!
1997
11ª Baja Galp 500 Portalegre – The event gets a new sponsor and, due to heavy rain, it
was shorten to 200 Km. The main National TV Network – SIC, started a 5 years strong
coverage of this event.
1999
Baja Porta da Ravessa 500 / Portalegre – A new sponsor entered again. The Adega
Cooperativa do Redondo, producer of some of the best Alentejo Wines (Porta da Ravessa),
became the main sponsor. For the first time this event was ran on two special stages for
cars.
2001
A 3rd special stage was introduced for cars, to be ran on Sunday morning. The event was
candidate of the FIA Cup of Bajas.
2002
As a FIA Baja Cup event, the race re-entered the National Championship, as a “Joker”
event. National TV Station RTP was granted the exclusive TV rights of the event.
2003
Porta da Ravessa wine gives way to a new wine: Anta da Serra, from the same company,
therefore it became the name of the event.
2004
Colin McRae raced his first race with his new Nissan Pick Up, entered by Nismo.
2005
201 bikes and 133 cars at the start and a great participation from the factory teams. VW
with Carlos Sainz (first cross country race), Bruno Saby, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Mark
Miller, and Mitsubishi, with Luc Alphand and Hiroshi Masuoka. Under some heavy rain the
race between Sainz, Kleinschmidt and Alphand was a great one. The winner was the
Mitsubishi of Alphand.
2006
211 bikes and 114 cars at the start. Marc Blazquez dominated the race. Between the bikes,
Mario Patrão won and Luis Engeitado was the fastest of the quads.
2007
Portalegre saw for the third time, Miguel Barbosa and Miguel Ramalho claim victory. In
the motor bikes the local António Maio wins.
2008
144 Bikes and 90 cars at the start. The new brand Pajero Racing Lancer with Stephane
Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottret won its first race. In the Bikerbikes the local “hero”
António Maio won again.
2010
Krysztof Holowczyc (auto) and António Maio (bike) win the Baja.
2011
The celebration of the 25th edition was praised with more than 600 competitors, a tribute
to the first cross-country race held in Portugal.
2012
As a FIM Baja World Cup for the first time, António Maio wins the race for the 5th time.
Victories for Roberto Borrego (Quads), David Além (UTV), João Guilherme (Buggy) and
Miroslav Zapletal / Maciek Marton (Auto).

INSURANCE
The entry fees, includes the civil liability insurance towards third parties, according to the law. Damages to
crews / service crews, rally / service cars are not covered by the insurance provided by the organizers.
The maximum indemnity per accident is limited to 20 000 000€ or 6 000 000€ in corporal or material
damages, respectively.
This insurance covers the competitor from the start until the end of the event.

SUPER SPECIAL STAGE – SSS1
The Super Special Stage is compulsory for all competitors, with the whole crew on board.
The Super Special Stage will be run on the outskirts of the city of Portalegre.
The Super Special Stage will be held on Friday, November 1st.
The reconnaissance of the Super Special Stage can be done according the programme, on foot, with a bicycle,
a scooter or a quad with less than 100 cc.

From Portalegre, via Crato, follow the signs to Monte da Pedra.

ZE 4 / SA 4 – Termas da Fadagosa de Nisa (39 31 498N / 07 47 118W)
Location: Near IP2, not far from the Fratel dam
Description: Artificial area with a mix of the event’s characteristics. Good visibility. Nisa municipality has done
an excellent job, creating a nice atmosphere for spectators, with bar support and easy parking.
Access: Coming from the North, from IP2, and after passing Fratel dam, turn left towards Monte
Claro/Albarrol. The SA4 is situated 2 km ahead. From the South, follow IP2 towards A23/Barragem do Fratel
and turn left to Monte Claro/Albarrol/Nisa. After 400 mt turn right to a secondary road. The SA4 parking is 400
mt ahead.

Location: Quinta da Margalha.
Description: Artificial area with several corners and one jump. Good visibility.
Access: Coming from the North, take A23, leave at Mouriscas or Portalegre (IP2), and follow the signs to
Gavião. Near to this village, follow EN 244, direction Ponte de Sôr and, a little farther, follow the Vale da Vinha
sign. The SA is located immediately after this deviation. Coming from the South, by Ponte de Sôr, follow EN
244 direction Gavião. Before this village, follow the Vale da Vinha sign.

Location: Ribeira de Seda (road connecting Seda to Vila Formosa and Vale Barqueiros).
Description: Mythical crossing of the Ribeira de Seda. Good visibility.
Access: Coming from the South, by Avis, follow the EN 370 towards Alter do Chão. Bear in mind that
circulation will be conditioned before Seda village.
Coming from the North, by Ponte de Sôr or Alter do Chão, follow the direction Galveias and Avis, on the WN
370. Bear in mind that circulation on the EN 370 will be conditioned near Seda village. The road connecting
Figueira, Barros and Vale de Seda to Benavila is closed to traffic.
Once in Seda village, follow the signs ZE7.

follow by Fronteira or Figueira and Barros, direction Avis.
Traffic will be conditioned on the EN 370 nearby Seda village.
The road connecting Figueira e Barros or Vale de Seda to Benavila is closed to traffic.
Once in Brenavila village follow the signs to ZE8.

Access: Coming from the South, by A6, leave at Estremoz exit. Then, follow Sousel direction on the EN 245 or
IP2. At Sousel, follow Avis, Figueira and Barros direction. Just out of Sousel, you will find the SA. Coming from
Portalegre on the IP2, follow Sousel direction and then the instructions above. Once in the village, follow ZE9
signs.

The Northern Alentejo - Portalegre - is almost a mythic region, a region where time is time. Reality lies here,

The city of Portalegre, with about 16000 inhabitants, grew up mainly from the 16th century on, moment when

industry, took some noble and bourgeois families to the new town, where they built houses with some charm
and greatness.
