Arriving in Colombia

Public Transportation
Buses
Colombia’s public transportation is based on buses,
offering a service mostly to locals. Nevertheless, Bogotá
has a unique and modern system of transportation called
Transmilenio, considered a model for alleviating
transportation problems in other major Latin American
cities. Transmilenio works like a metro, with stations to
pick up and drop off passengers, in a circular route in
specially reserved bus lanes. In Medellin the Metro
system is one of the best in Latin America.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available at airports, hotels, restaurants,
shopping centers, and the usual places. Although taxis
are more expensive than buses, they remain a very
comfortable and economical way to get around the city
quickly and easily.

Orquideorama in Medellin 100 - 1,000 guests Colombia is crazy about this gorgeous botanical garden in Medellin,
Colombia that was renovated in 2008. The Orquideorama is an organically expanding wooden mesh-work of modular

General Information
Bogota
A cosmopolitan city shinning with culture and nightlife,
located on a high plateau in the Andes Mountains, Bogotá
is the capital of Colombia and also its most populous city
with more than 7 million inhabitants. It is a cosmopolitan
metropolis that intertwines modern architecture with
large open spaces, an efficient mass transport system.
Declared a World Book Capital in 2007, Bogotá is known
both for its world-class museums and trendy nightlife.
Cartagena de Indias
Founded in 1533 on a wide sheltered harbor on the
Caribbean Coast, Cartagena de Indias was once one of
the richest ports in the New World. The high,
salt-bleached walls that circumscribe its Old City were
built to thwart pirates and privateers during the height of
the Spanish colonial era in the 1600s. Now a UNESCO
World Heritage site, the Old City preserves the rich history
and culture of days gone by.
Medellin
The “City of Eternal Spring” lies in the Valley of Aburrá
and is distinguished by the abundant plazas, parks and
gorgeous flowers that gave the city its nickname. It is
the country’s second most important city, surrounded by
coffee haciendas and the Andes Mountains.
Cali
Framed by the Pacific Ocean and sugar cane fields,
Santiago de Calí is known as the “World Capital of Salsa”
and is famous for its fiestas, street partying and dancing
at salsa clubs. It is one of the major economic and
industrial centers of the country and offers a plethora
of museums, theaters, dance, ballet, arts and historical
sites.
The Coffee Triangle
The three cities that form the Café Triangle – Armenia,
Pereira and Manizales – are known for their beautiful
landscapes and friendly people. It is a land of coffee
haciendas, trails, waterfalls, valleys, cloud forests and
high alpine plateaus.
Santa Marta
The oldest city in South America with an unrivaled
architectural heritage is best known today as an
adventure destination. This is the land of the Arhuaco and
the Kogui aboriginal tribes that resisted colonization. It is
also the land of Aracataca – the birthplace of Nobel Prize
winner Gabrial García Márques – and of Liberator Simón
Bolívar, whose remains are preserved at his estate on the
outskirts of the city.
Santander
Adventures galore - Colombia’s best site for paragliding
(10-minute flights), zip-lines that let you fly for nearly
60 m/200 ft, and a wet rappelling descent 65 m/215 ft
down one of the best waterfalls in Santander - the Salto
del Cañaveralito. Experience rafting on the Fonce River,
caving in the Cueva del Indio, taking a tour on a chiva
bus to the towns of Floridablanca, San Gil, Girón and “the
prettiest town in Colombia” - Barichara.
Places Of Interest
Museums in Bogota Home to more than 40 museums, Bogotá is ideal as a cultural incentive destination. The Museo
Nacional, with its imposing stone-walled facade, is one of the oldest museums on the American continent and now counts
some 20,000 pieces of art among its collection. The world’s most important fine metalworking collection is housed in
the Museo del Oro, or Gold Museum. It contains more than 34,000 original gold pieces, and 20,000 objects representing
diverse pre-Columbian cultures. Other world-renowned collections of art, history, archeology, religion, architecture, and
photography often serve as the perfect backdrop for a theme party.
La Candelaria: A Bohemian Neighborhood Bogota’s most Bohemian section, this picturesque section of the city is
also its historic, cultural, artistic and intellectual center. Notable for its steep streets and large colonial houses with
tile roofs and wide eaves, it lies at the foothills of a tall peak called Cerro de Monserrate. Among the historically
significant structures located in this neighborhood are: City Hall, the Presidential House, the Cardinal’s Palace, the Courts,
the Congress and many Ministries. A circuit of museums, restaurants and beautiful historic sites make touring this
neighborhood a must.
The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral Hidden beneath the plains and hills of a little town with narrow streets is one of the
marvels of Colombia: the Salt Dome of Zipaquirá, one of the largest salt deposits in the world. For the Muisca indigenous
group that inhabited the area, salt was the main means of barter. Today, it produces half of the country’s salt. Visitors to
the site – which has been called a "Jewel of Modern Architecture" and is a popular place for pilgrimages in the country
– can explore the Miner’s Route (with miners’ helmet, light and gloves included): the Stations of the Cross, the descent
ramp, chorus and the balconies, the Nartex Complex and the Great Miners’ Chamber.
Plaza Botero in Medellin Boasting 23 sculptures, this is the world’s largest public exhibit of works by Fernando Botero.
The Colombian-born artist’s fame skyrocketed when two of his corpulent sculptures were selected as focal points of the
lobby of the new Time-Warner Center on New York City’s Columbus Circle.
Pueblito Paisa – Cerro Nutibara The top of Nutibara hill in Medellin, offers one of the best panoramic views of the city.
Is a replica of an early 20th century village, stands atop the hill offering visitors a glimpse of a traditional chapel, school,
city hall, parish house, cigar and liquor store, barber shop, drugstore, a two-story house and a handicrafts shop.

Arriving in Cartagena de Indias
Cartagena's international airport, called Rafael Núñez
Airport, is located within the limits of Cartagena de
Indias, just 10 minutes from the Cartagena de Indias
Convention Center and 15 minutes from the hotel zone,
receives more than 220 direct national flights every
week, which means that in Cartagena land more than
700 international flights with connection in other
Colombian cities. Cartagena has direct flights from
Panama City, Miami and Ft Lauderdale. Also the city can
connect through Bogota's airport and we have around
20 direct flights between the cities. The transportation
between the airport and the hotel zone can be done in

Taxis
Cartagena has taxis in the airport and around the city
that can transport travelers and locals from one place to

Buses
Cartagena is working in a transportation system called
Transcaribe that are articulated buses that will connect

Aduana Square Capacity 2,000/theater style It is the largest square in the city where the Customs House was located
and where all the trade was controlled. Currently, the building adjacent to the plaza houses is the District Municipality.
San Ignacio and San Francisco Bulwarks Capacity 1,000/theater style Built around 1630, their mission was to
discourage any attempt against the dock and to cooperate with the defense of Bocagrande.
Proclamación Square Capacity 500/theater style It was given the name of Proclamation Plaza on November 11th,
1811 when the city congregated on the plaza to support the signing of the Independence Act.
San Felipe de Barajas Castle Capacity 2,000/theater style San Felipe Castle, built between 1939 and 1957, is the
largest colonial Spanish forte in Colombia and an outstanding example of military engineering from the Colonial Period.
Bolivar Square Seating 1,000 persons theater style This park is recognized for its one hundred year old trees that
provide shade for visitors who come to see the statue of South America’s Liberator, Simon Bolivar, on his horse, and the
beautiful fountain. The Palace of the Inquisition is a large manor house dating back to the 18th century and is considered
a jewel of the urban architecture of the time.

Teatro Heredia Adolfo Mejia: This is the main exhibition
stage of the city which was built in 1911, events such
as Cartagena International Music Festival, Hay Festival
(literature) and International Movie Festival every year
take place.

Military structures, such as the walls, bastions and
fortresses, stand next to a well preserved colonial and
republican city. Cartagena is home to many churches
located in the Historic Center and Cerro de la Popa. A visit
