Guest Mutterings
College-student volunteers working in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake were, as
you would expect, culture-shocked at the living conditions of most people they
encountered in their attempts to help with cleanup. But what stuck Tom, a student from
a Catholic university in the Midwest, was not the peoples’ poverty but their generosity.
One day after a hard day’s work under a pitiless sun, Tom and a half-dozen men
were resting in the shade sweating. One of the men pulled out a half-bag of crackers and an old man had a can of
warm pop, which he opened. Not much and not very satisfying to hungry and thirsty men—yet the bag of broken
crackers and the can of soda were passed around, both handed first to their awkward visitor from the United States,
who was clearly better-fed and better off than any of them. They would not listen to his refusal.
Embarrassed as Tom was, his embarrassment gave way to simple gratitude and then to a kind of bright joy as he
finally accepted the food and drink, a part of all they had, realizing he was sharing in a sacrifice, a sacrament.
In praising the widow who gave her last two coins to the temple treasury, Jesus is not suggesting that you and I
need to give away our last penny. Rather, Jesus acknowledges that it is often the poorest of the poor who show the
greatest charity, who risk the most to be loving. Jesus criticized the scribes and priests not only because of their
apparent stinginess in donating to the Temple, but also because people such as the widow were often made poor by
those in power. It is the responsibility of governments, churches, and individuals not only to come to the relief of the
poor but to prevent them from being crushed in the first place.
Fr. Larry Janowski, O.F.M.
After communion today, take a
moment to write in your journal the
answer to this prayer: “God, show
me one way in this Mass I can be a
better version of myself this week.”
Spiritual Life
FLAMES OF LOVE FOREVER BURNING IN OUR HEARTS
A beautiful Mass of Remembrance was celebrated on All Souls Day. A candle was lit and placed on the altar for each
parishioner who died in the past year. These candles will remain on the altar and will be lit every weekend during the
month of November to commemorate our deceased loved ones. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
ST. BARNABAS THANKSGIVING LITURGY
All are invited to attend a special Thanksgiving Liturgy on Thursday, November 22nd at 10:00 a.m. Please bring one
non-perishable food item per person to share with those in need. As we offer our gifts of bread and wine during the
mass, we will each bring forward to the altar our gift of food to share as we give thanks to God for our abundant
blessings.
Human Concerns
HARVEST SUNDAY
The annual Harvest Sunday Food Drive will be held on next Sunday, November 18, starting at 2 p.m. This Drive
helps support the Maple/Morgan Park Community Food Pantry, which assists area residents in need. Look for the
Orange Flyer in this bulletin and attach it to your donation that you set on your front porch. Volunteer drivers and
youth collectors are needed, from 1:45p.m. to approximately 4 p.m., to pick up donations throughout our parish and
deliver them to the food pantry. Teams will meet in the school parking lot at 1:45p.m. Please contact Carolyn or
Michael Crispo at 773-238-5701 or 773-213-3905 if you can help drive, collect, or for additional information.

SHOE BOX PARTY
The St. Barnabas Women’s Club Invites you to our
2nd Annual Shoe Box Party! Friday, November 16, at
7p.m. in the Church Basement. This evening will be a
chance for the women of St. Barnabas to get together to
fill shoe boxes with goodies and necessities for needy
children. We will enjoy each others company while we fill
some boxes and get them ready for their journey around
the world. We ask that you bring something to add to the
shoe boxes and $7.00 to cover the cost of shipping for
each box. You can drop off the items early at the rectory and we can sort them. The following is a list of items they
recommend for filling the shoe boxes.
School Supplies:
pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, markers
Toiletries:
soap (not liquid) plastic travel soap boxes, wash cloths, toothpaste &
toothbrushes and plastic cases, hand sanitizers, lip balm, combs, brushes and
hair accessories
Miscellaneous:
t- shirts in youth sizes, sunglasses, candy, mints, gum,
(nothing that will melt), small toys or stuffed animals, small slippers
NO LIQUIDS, weapons or army toys please. Be creative! Items have to fit in a shoe box. We will fill the boxes
together and mark them for either a boy or a girl. This is most likely the only thing they will receive this Christmas.
We will have drinks and nibbles but feel free to BYOB. We hope you can join us for this very special event. Feel free
to bring a friend, all are welcome. If you have any questions please email Mary Jo Viero [email protected] or go
to www.samaritanspurse.org/occ and look for Operation Christmas Child.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Please join us Tuesday, November 13th at 7:30 p.m. in the Church Hall for our new series of Bible Study on the
Women of the Bible. Last year we took a look at the Old Testament women and this year we will be looking at the
lives of New Testament women. We will use the book The Women of the Gospel written by Mary Ann Getty, which
is available in the rectory for a voluntary donation of $9.00. We will cover lesson 3: “The women who followed
Jesus from Galilee” — Ministering and Witnessing to Jesus. If you have many years of experience in Bible Study
or just beginning… all are welcome. Join us for fellowship and devotion as we study the scriptures together on our
journey of faith. If you have questions please feel free to contact Cindy Neu at 773-779-1511 or at
[email protected].
THIS WEEK WITH THE NEW TESTAMENT
We have gone through the four gospels in three talks about the New Testament. Some 80 people came to the
sessions held by Father Bill Kenneally on Monday morning (in the Church) and on Wednesday evening (in the
rectory). This week we turn to Saint Paul and his letter writing. It will be a fascinating explanation of what Paul really
meant and how his life experience brought him to this kind of faith. If you haven’t been to any of the sermons you are
welcome to hear about Paul and his writers cramp. Monday morning at 9:45 in Church, Wednesday evening at
7 p.m. in the rectory
