A destination for Francophiles
in New York since its founding
in 1898, the French Institute
Alliance Française (FIAF) is the
country’s premier destination
for French language and culture.
FIAF is a private, American 501(c)
(3) not-for-profit organization
incorporated in the state of
New York and is not an agency
of the French government.
Just steps from Central Park, FIAF’s flagship
location on East 60th Street offers dynamic
and far-reaching cultural programs as well
as top-quality French classes for toddlers,
kids, and adults. FIAF Language Center
satellites bring the best of French to Brooklyn
and Montclair, New Jersey, and new online
course offerings allow students to learn from
the comfort of their own homes.
Crossing the Line, FIAF’s leading contemporary
arts festival, is a key moment on the New York
cultural calendar each fall. The festival
provides innovative international artists with
a new platform to share their works and
offers New Yorkers access to groundbreaking,
participatory, and genre-defying productions.
Our French classes run year-round, with special
summer programs for toddlers and kids.
Our tried-and-true methods are as engaging
as they are effective, helping students achieve
French fluency quickly and easily. We aim to
accommodate even the busiest New Yorkers
with our broad range of scheduling options.

Online Learning
Professional Development
Learning French at FIAF is a unique, immersive
experience, and our classes are as fun as they
are effective. The FIAF Language Center, located
in the heart of Manhattan, serves nearly 6,000
New Yorkers each year. All FIAF teachers are
native speakers, and our classes follow
tried-and-true methods to help students
achieve full French fluency.
New this year, FIAF partnered with Le Pain
Quotidien to offer French classes in their
Lexington Avenue & 65th Street location.
These “Breakfast in French” classes invite
students to learn in a convivial atmosphere
with delicious coffee and pastries.
In 2014-2015, FIAF expanded its online offering
to provide students with additional resources
to practice their French outside the classroom.
Speedlingua™ offers students the opportunity
to perfect their French pronunciation from the
comfort of their own homes, while Frantastique
delivers a fun and educational French lesson
to students’ inboxes every day. Students can
also sign up for one-on-one video chat tutoring
sessions and our new virtual group classes
to keep up with their French from anywhere
in the world.
Our expertly curated Teachers’ Professional
Development workshops throughout the year
offer public and private school French teachers
from the Tri-State area the tools they need to
succeed.
We offer a broad array of classes, from general
French to dynamic, themed workshops ranging
from business French to literature. FIAF students
can select from a multitude of scheduling options
in order to find the classes that are best suited
to their specific needs. All students also benefit
from a free FIAF Membership, including access
to the extensive learning resources in the Haskell
Library and free weekly CinéSalon film screenings.
In addition to our French classes, FIAF offers
private specialized English classes for Frenchspeakers living in New York.

Two thriving satellite locations in Montclair,
NJ and Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn offer topquality French classes to communities outside
Manhattan.
In addition, FIAF Montclair offers cultural events
throughout the year, including an annual Bastille
Day celebration, CinéKids film screenings in
partnership with the Montclair Art Museum, and
talks by renowned authors.
French Certification Exams
FIAF offers all internationally recognized French
certification exams, including the DELF/DALF,
the DELF Junior, the TCF, and the DAEFLE.
Whether students hope to matriculate at French
universities, become French teachers, or simply
enhance their resumes, these exams provide
helpful credentials.
New Challenges
With competition more fierce than ever,
FIAF continues to evolve and expand our
class offerings. There are now more offerings
throughout the day. Students can choose classes
at various session lengths and levels so that they
can fit French into any schedule.

in Schools
The FIAF Preschool combines the best of French
and American pedagogy in a fun and immersive
learning environment. Graduates of our half day
programs for three-year-olds and four-year-olds
have been accepted into leading French, bilingual,
international, and American schools, such as the
Lycée Français de New York, the Franco-American
School of New York, Horace Mann and the Chapin
School. After three successful years, the preschool
continues to expand and evolve.
FIAF’s youth programs (ages 1–17) are the fastestgrowing segment of the Language Center,
and we continually update our offerings to meet
the increasing demand. Our classes, workshops,
activities, and camps are tailored to the specific
needs of each age group, and all of our youth
programs employ an interactive and participatory
approach to language learning.
FIAF works in collaboration with the Garden
School in Manhattan to provide in-school
programs tailored to meet the needs of each
class. The program offers students an immersive
experience in the familiar environment
of their school. FIAF is looking to broaden
our reach and develop new in-school French
enrichment programs.
For students whose native language is French,
FIAF has developed unique classes that reinforce
children’s strong foundation in the language
and take into account their bilingual
environment. These special curricula meet
the standards of the French Ministry of Education.

Family Saturdays
FIAF is
for Families
FIAF’s Family Saturdays program invites children
and parents to participate in fun, interactive,
and educational activities throughout the FIAF
building. Hands-on workshops and engaging
story hours complement film screenings and live
performances to create a full-day experience.
Our partnership with the Montclair Art Museum
continues to bring New Jersey families CinéKids
film screenings paired with themed arts-andcrafts workshops.

French at our home on 60th Street

family-friendly performances

In-School Arts Program

Bringing Students to FIAF
FIAF was proud to build on the success of last
year’s pilot in-school arts program and continue
to make an impact on middle school students
in high-need schools. In partnership with
Louis Vuitton, FIAF brought French photographer
Jean-Christian Bourcart to MS 331 in the Bronx
to lead an eleven-week workshop with one class
of 19 eighth-grade students.
In partnership with GDF Suez, FIAF invites school
groups from around New York City to experience
outstanding contemporary art. In 2014-2015,
FIAF welcomed over 400 students to exhibitions
in the FIAF Gallery. These visits led by FIAF’s
Artistic Director, Gallery Coordinator, or the artists
themselves aim to expand students’ horizons
and spark their creativity.
FIAF’s Young Audience Outreach Program strives
to make French culture accessible for all New
York City schoolchildren. School groups from
all five boroughs are invited to FIAF to attend
films, performances, and concerts that have been
thoughtfully curated with children in mind.
Participating students photographed their
friends, families, and daily routines during the
workshop. Louis Vuitton employees exchanged
letters with the students and provided individual
attention and encouragement as the students
prepared to present their work to the public
at a reception in the FIAF Gallery. The students’
best photographs were displayed for one week at
FIAF before being displayed in the halls of MS 331.

Program
In 2014–2015, over 900 students attended five
Young Audience events at FIAF’s Florence Gould
Hall. Paired with Q&A sessions with the artists,
these events inspire and engage schoolchildren.
All Young Audience events are free of charge for
public school groups and affordable for private
schools, ensuring equal access for students from
all backgrounds.

FIAF Students and Members.

Serving FIAF Students
Kids at the Library
The Haskell Library offers unparalleled resources
for FIAF Students of all ages and abilities. In the
state-of-the-art Jacques and Alexandre Leviant
Centre d’Auto-Apprentissage, students can
supplement their French classes with multimedia
materials and language books organized by
learning level. With access to language-learning
tools outside the classroom, FIAF students are on
the fast-track to French fluency.
Children are the fastest-growing segment of library
users, and for good reason: the Kids’ Corner offers
over 2,000 carefully curated books, 10 magazine
subscriptions, and 250 DVDs. In Fiscal Year 2015,
the Haskell Library’s Children’s Programs Director
worked closely with the Language Center to ensure
that children’s collections serve the educational
objectives of programs for toddlers, kids, and
teens. New bibliographies of children’s materials
offer parents the tools they need to select the
most appropriate new books and films for their
little ones.
The Haskell Library’s collections are constantly
evolving to best meet the needs of FIAF Students
and teachers.

An Online Resource
By the Numbers
Launched in 2013, Culturethèque has effectively
doubled the Haskell Library’s collections by
offering FIAF Students and Members unlimited
access to a vast digital library. Culturethèque
continues to refine and enhance its offering,
and in Fiscal Year 2015 added numerous magazine
titles as well as a wealth of children’s books.

2014
The eighth edition of Crossing the Line, FIAF’s
annual contemporary arts festival, cemented
its reputation as a “marvelous multi-genre
festival” and confirmed its importance in the
New York cultural landscape (The New York
Times, September 6, 2014).
New partnerships, heightened visibility, and
groundbreaking artistry characterized the 2014
edition, which spanned six weeks and broke down
the barrier between audience and performer.
Highlights included Prune Nourry’s monumental
Terracotta Daughters, which was named “[one
of the] top 10 New York gallery shows for
September” and featured 108 life-sized and
individually crafted clay sculptures that recall
China’s famous Terracotta Warriors (Artnet,
September 22, 2014).

Olivier Saillard’s Models never talk opened
the festival during New York Fashion Week,
allowing seven former supermodels to break
their traditional silence in a world premiere
performance hailed as “a show-and-tell
presentation of insight, wit and art”
(Wall Street Journal, September 17, 2014).
The festival also featured a number of interactive
works. Fernando Rubio’s Everything by my
side invited spectators to lie in pristine white
beds beside actresses and listen to murmured
monologues, and Ivana Müller’s participatory
works for adults and children were praised for
“the speed with which [they create] a community”
(The New York Times, October 2, 2014).
The second year of FIAF’s partnership with the
Hermès Foundation’s New Settings program
featured one US premiere with Gilles Jobin and
Julius Von Bismarck’s QUANTUM and one world
premiere with Jessica Mitrani and Rossy de Palma’s
Traveling Lady. Thanks to this partnership, these
artists were able to reach new audiences and New
Yorkers had the opportunity to experience their
innovative work.
Crossing the Line 2014 featured 15 exceptional
international artists, three world premieres,
and six US premieres.
Crossing the Line 2014 commissioned a unique
and highly acclaimed performance, 600
HIGHWAYMEN’s Employee of the Year.
Crossing the Line 2014 gained extraordinary visibility
through a new advertising campaign in partnership
with JC Decaux as well as broad press coverage,
including ten dedicated feature articles in
The New York Times alone.

Cinema
CinéSalon offers audiences the
chance to discover new French films
alongside timeless classics.
In only its second year, FIAF’s flagship CinéSalon
program offers moviegoers the chance to see
outstanding French films paired with thoughtful
introductions from high-profile personalities
in the arts and post-screening wine receptions.
FIAF Members enjoy free access to these weekly
screenings.
FIAF invited special guests to introduce each
screening including neuroscientist Leah Kelly,
filmmaker Radley Metzger, cultural critic Laura
Kipnis, author Phillip Lopate, WQXR journalist
Annie Bergen, and actor and producer Ronald
Guttman.
This year, CinéSalon welcomed 300 moviegoers
every Tuesday, 24% of whom attended every week
and 24% of whom came once or twice a month.

Kids’ Animated Weekend
FIAF continues to expand its cinema offerings to
provide our members with exclusive access to
top French films before they are released in the
US. Partnerships with the In French With English
Subtitles film festival and the Focus on French
Cinema festival in 2014–2015 brought exciting
new films and audiences to Florence Gould Hall.
In February 2015, FIAF organized a weekendlong festival of animated films for children.
These carefully curated short films showcased 85
years of imaginative storytelling in French and
Francophone animation, captivating audiences
throughout the weekend. Nearly 400 kids and
parents took part in this one-of-a-kind festival.

returned in spring 2015 with three exclusive
talks, an exhibition of photographs by fashion
photographer Grégoire Alexandre, and a tie-in
film series as part of CinéSalon.

returned with three expertly
curated tastings led by Hortense
Bernard of Millesima USA.

the visionary design team behind downtown

the innovation, inspiration, and craftsmanship

second edition of this provocative series in fall
2014 featured three panel discussions, a CinéSalon

Ballenger played the young Marquis de Lafayette
and his wife in Lafayette, a new play inspired
by letters they exchanged during the Marquis’
time in America; co-presented with Friends of
Hermione-Lafayette in America to celebrate
the historic return to the United States of the
Hermione, an authentic reconstruction of
Lafayette’s 18th-century ship that helped turn
the tide of the American Revolution.
Opera Lafayette brought its 20th anniversary
season to a close in Florence Gould Hall with
L’Épreuve Villageoise, an 18th-century comic
opera by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry.

World Nomads Tunisia Weekend
FIAF’s World Nomads festival in 2013 put a
spotlight on Tunisian artists following the Arab
Spring. In May 2015, we once again showcased
the innovative work emerging from this region
over the course of one engaging weekend.
Events included:
A concert by Tunisian vocalist Sonia M’Barek
alongside preeminent qanun player Slim Jaziri
and New York’s own Bassam Saba Ensemble.
A screening of Nejib Belkadhi’s documentary
7 ½, a fascinating look at Tunisian politics from
the onset of revolution to the first elections.
A panel discussion about political and spiritual
Islam in homage to poet Abdelwahab Meddeb,
moderated by the poet’s daughter, Hind Meddeb.
A screening of Kaouther Ben Hania’s awardwinning mockumentary Le Challat de Tunis,
which offers a pointed perspective on attitudes
toward women in Tunisia.
A “Best of Tunsia” artisan market in Le Skyroom,
featuring a diverse array of luxury products made
by Tunisian artisans.
A very special Tunisian brunch in honor of
Mother’s Day.
A Tunisian book sale facilitated by Albertine

Arts Gala
Held at the Plaza Hotel under the patronage
of the Ambassador of France in Washington
and the Consul General of France in New York,
the 2014 Trophée des Arts Gala was an elegant
evening that welcomed over 500 prestigious
friends of FIAF and raised over $1.2M.
This unprecedented success was made possible
in large part by the support of dinner chairs Robert
G. Wilmers, FIAF Chairman and Chairman & CEO
of M&T Bank; Lauren Santo Domingo, FIAF Trustee
and Co-Founder of Moda Operandi; and Jeremy

In 2014, Jacques Grange, one of France’s most
distinguished interior designers, received
The Trophée des Arts award. World-famous
gallerist Barbara Gladstone presented Jacques

New this year, our Cercle d’Amies is a group
of American and French women who meet
several times a year for convivial luncheons
and receptions at members’ homes to discuss
timely topics with prominent guests, including
writers, journalists, artists, and collectors.
Past guests have included French writer
and TV personality Olivier Barrot, writer
and journalist Kenizé Mourad, and author
Yoyo Naeght.
In September 2014, the fourth annual Open
House welcomed hundreds of guests for a broad
range of FIAF activities, including mini-French
classes, a film screening, a gallery opening,
beauty and wellness treatments, and a wine
and cheese tasting.
About 250 FIAF Members come together every
December to ring in the holiday season in style
at the annual FIAF Members’ Holiday Party,
hosted by the French Consulate. This chic event
is always sold-out, and some lucky attendees
go home with extraordinary raffle prizes!

Every July, FIAF transforms 60th Street into a
three-block fête in honor of Bastille Day. In 2014,
this lively street fair drew over 30,000 visitors and
featured more than 70 participating booths that
offered guests French food, culture, and products.
Over 320 visitors enjoyed a wine, beer, cocktail,
and cheese tasting in FIAF’s Tinker Auditorium,
and 40 lucky participants won unique prizes
in the annual prize drawing.
FIAF’s annual street fair is the best
place to celebrate France’s national
holiday in New York.
Consistently mentioned as one of the best
summer activities for families, FIAF’s Bastille Day

that can accommodate a wide

setups upon request.
Le Skyroom
Florence Gould Hall
Tinker Auditorium
FIAF Gallery
Le Skyroom is FIAF’s newest event space and
is located on the eighth floor of the FIAF building.
The venue offers a modern, high-tech
environment, with built-in media screen, highdefinition projection and sound equipment,
and private WIFI network setup. There is also a fully
equipped demonstration kitchen, private guest
check-in area, restrooms, and cloakroom. Ample
natural light and dramatic city views make Le
Skyroom perfect for the staging of both daytime
and evening events.
FIAF’s premier venue, Florence Gould Hall, was
fully renovated in 2012, and is equipped with a
state-of-the-art digital cinema projection system,
and the latest audio-visual equipment. The Hall
features a classic jewel-box interior, with plush
seats, and ample legroom, offering both supreme
guest comfort and high-tech production efficiency.
Located between Park and Madison Avenues,
on Manhattan’s beautiful Upper East Side, Florence
Gould Hall is both the ideal location and venue for
corporate town halls, seminars, performing arts
presentations, and film screenings.
FIAF’s Tinker Auditorium is an intimate and easily
customizable venue situated on the mezzanine
level of Florence Gould Hall. Its proximity to
Florence Gould Hall makes it the perfect venue
for accompanying registration, catering and
sponsor-table setups.
The FIAF Gallery, located on the ground floor, lends
itself to both art and photo exhibitions as well as
intimate dinners and receptions. This highly visible
venue guarantees excellent exposure for public
shows, as well as a beautiful private space for
entertaining. The venue can accommodate small
groups (20 guests) for dinner, and up to 125 guests
for cocktail receptions.
The venue can accommodate 200 guests for standup cocktail receptions and 120 for seated events.
The venue can accommodate 360 seated guests.
When rented independently of Florence Gould
Hall, the venue is also accessible from FIAF’s main
entrance on 60th Street, and can be utilized for
standup receptions for up to 300 guests, or built
out with riser-style seating to accommodate
115 guests for small lectures and media
presentations.
