Coming of Age/Mystery
Mother and son
escape abuse,
find shelter and
mystery
Some kids have to grow up fast. This is the story of Lonnie Tobin,
one such young man. Weary of the physical abuse his mother is
subjected to from his father, he takes matters into his own hands.
Convincing her to flee their fearful home life, son and mother
sneak away in the night to the small town of Rocky Branch,
where they find peace with her family. It is a corner of the world
he thought they had left behind forever. But mysteries abound
in this little wooded village, and an unexpected adventure
begins when word of a nightly monster on the loose stirs fear
among the residents. Young Lonnie soon forgets about his father
and becomes fascinated by the story, only to find he might be
spending a little too much time on the strange side of the tracks.

The Strange Side of the Tracks takes us back to revisit childhood
days when summer vacations spent with relatives invited
investigation of new surroundings, and in this story, opened an
opportunity to explore the possibilities of an unsolved mystery
that perplexed even the grown ups of this little town. Avant’s
writing flows like honey, sweet and tasteful, leaving an aftertaste
of total satisfaction.
—Dave Potter, Author of “A Place of Stones”
GEORGE LARRY AVANT (December 22, 1950 - November 8, 2012) passed away just
months after signing the publication contract for this, his first and only novel. George
travelled all over the country with his family as a radio broadcaster for thirty years,
often serving in gospel ministry. For many years, he was half of The Light Brothers, a
comedy duo. A writer, humorist, painter, and avid reader, Avant returned late in life
to rural Arkansas, to a small town rich with history and personal memories, where
he was inspired to write this novel. He left behind a daughter and two sons, all of
who helped George bring his work to completion, and assisted editors in preparing
the text for publication.

Hiroko Fujita is a traditional ohanashi obaasan (storytelling
grandma). She spent her childhood in the rural mountain town
of Miharu in Fukushima Prefecture, where she heard hundreds of
ancient folktales from village elders. A graduate of Japan Women’s
University, she worked for over fifty years in early childhood
education. Now she travels throughout Japan, sharing the old tales
and teaching young mothers. She has written nearly three dozen
books in Japanese. She lives in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
Fran Stallings, a professional storyteller based in Bartlesville,
Oklahoma, interpreted for Mrs. Fujita’s twelve storytelling tours
of twenty-two American states, Japan and Singapore. Stallings
edited and adapted English translations of Mrs. Fujita’s storytelling
handbook and a collection of forty-seven tales known throughout
Japan. Stallings’ other publications include articles, stories, songs,

Autobiography/Storytelling
Inspiring
autobiography by
an Emmy Award
winning story
performer
Nobody knows how to tell a story like Bobby Norfolk, and here
he tells his own life story. Norfolk grew up in hardscrabble
neighborhoods of Saint Louis, Missouri, during the 1950s and
60s, sometimes walking to elementary school from an apartment
his parents could not afford to heat. Lifting himself up by force of
will and God-given talent, Norfolk defeated a childhood stutter to
become a high school dramatist and later an exceptional college
student. The path was never easy—and often frightening. With
men of color being killed all-too-frequently in America, Norfolk
sought a personal identity based upon talent and hard work,
but also upon where safety and justice might be found. He tells
these stories—some heartwarming or humorous, some frightful
and treacherous—honestly, with a graceful mindfulness that all
would do well to emulate.

A lifetime retrospective of poems written and spoken
from memory by Terry Wooten, poet and creator of
Michigan’ Stone Circle poetry recitation venue
“Wooten’s writing shows us a deeper meaning and mystery
inherent in the physical. If he measures the world too much with
poetry, as his sixth-grade daughter complained, his perspective
is none-the-less deeply healing and counter-culture, showing us
our lives are ripe with meaning. In his poetry we are natural in a
natural world.”

“Terry Wooten is truly a modern-day bard. Many a poet owes a
legacy to him, myself included. Wooten’s voice is so indomitable
that his poems sing out on the page, resonating with that very
primal place inside a reader … His poems inspire surprise and
wonderment—prepare to be delighted and awed.”
—Mi Ditmar, poet, creative writing instructor, Syracuse University
and Mellon Grants Coordinator for the Central New York
Humanities Corridor
“Terry Wooten is a fine poet in the tradition of Whitman and
Williams. His work celebrates our history and our encounters with
civilization. His poems show a humane and understanding heart,
and a humor and wit that helps illuminate our daily lives.”
—Herb Scott, the late poet and professor of English, Western

TERRY WOOTEN created Stone Circle near Elk

“The Killdeer by Michael Cotter is one of those wonderful books
that is going to bring pleasure to a great many different sorts of
people. Cotter is a professional storyteller so his vignettes, told in
a way that seems perfectly natural, are, of course, very carefully
and artfully composed. Storytellers have spent years reacting to
their audiences, picking up all the little nuances of their listeners,
and seamlessly blending this live response into the fabric of the
tale. That quality of resonance rings in these written stories … ”
—Bookreview.com
“There is a healing power in sharing personal
stories. This came into focus for me in 1990
when I was invited to conduct a workshop with
terminally ill people. There I learned that we can
be healed without being cured. This brought me
to the place where I am now, where I believe
that the personal story has a great self-healing
potential. And, of course, as we heal ourselves,
the people around us are also changed.”

“Lynette Ford has been telling stories for Cincinnati Playhouse for
years – to children and adults of all ages at our theatre, in schools

to the universal, the humorous to the tragic, the personal to the

Character Formation / Mentoring / At-Risk Youth
Parents, educators
and social workers:
these titles support
your goals
This title leads a suite of programming tools based upon
traditional and original stories to help troubled teens in need of
character formation and re-formation. Czarnota’s work is also
used in general classrooms and youth activities to undergird
healthy character formation in the pre-teen and teen years.
Mentoring teens can be a wild dance. As adults we count and
measure our movements but teens create their own music and
their own steps, they dance to the cycle of adolescent change in
an effort to become one of us, though they would never admit
that.

Once a teacher interested in history and narrative, LORNA CZARNOTA became
aware of the healing power of stories when a teenage niece ran away from
home twenty years ago. Czarnota became a certified trauma counselor and focused her career on helping teens who were experiencing character-formation
issues. She continues assembling narratives, programming and information
for use by parents, teachers, counselors, social workers, and others who work
closely with youth. These three books: Dancing at the Crossroads - Stories and
Activities for At-Risk Youth Programming, A Guide for Practitioners in At-Risk

Dr. George Simon knows how people push your buttons. Your
children—especially teens—are expert at it, as is your mate. A coworker may quietly undermine your efforts while professing to be
helpful, or your boss may prey on your weaknesses. Manipulative
people have two goals: to win and to look good doing it. Often
those they abuse are only vaguely aware of what is
happening to them. In this eye-opening book, you’ll discover. . .
• 4 reasons why victims have a hard time leaving abusive
relationships
• Power tactics manipulators use to push their own agendas and
justify their behavior
• Ways to redefine the rules of engagement between you and an
abuser
• How to spot potential weaknesses in your character that can set
you up for manipulation
• 12 tools for personal empowerment to help you maintain greater
strength in all relationships
”Thank you for your book, In Sheep’s Clothing. My husband and I
saw several counselors to help us through the problems we were
having with my mother-in-law who is immature and manipulative.
The counselors spent most of their time trying to get me [to accept
her], instead of teaching me [as only your book did] ways to cope
with her manipulation.”

Modern permissiveness and loss of family structure let disturbed
characters reach adulthood without proper social training. In a
book meant both for the general public and for professionals, Dr.
George Simon explains:
• How most disturbed characters think
• Habitual behaviors the disturbed use to avoid responsibility and
to manipulate, deceive, and exploit others.
• Why victims in relationships with disturbed characters do not get
help they need from traditional therapies.
• A straightforward guide to recognizing and understanding all
personality types most likely to undermine relationships.
• A new framework for making sense of the crazy world many find
themselves in when there’s a disturbed character in their lives.
• Concrete principles for engaging disturbed characters that
promote responsibility and positive change
• Tactics for both lay persons and therapists to lessen the chances
for victimization and empower those who would otherwise be
victims in their relationships with disturbed characters.

Eric Mantle presents the basics of classical theory in a clear and
concise manner for all beginning drawing and painting students.
His book features diagrams that illustrate every concept. Students
will see the complexities of color theory and understand how
to create the illusion of volume and depth on a 2-dimensional
surface.
“As an art student,” Professor Mantle recalls, “I was frequently
frustrated by instructional books that gave lengthy verbal
descriptions of visual concepts and then showed small and/or
unclear diagrams of those concepts. As an art teacher, I found
that my students would gain a clearer understanding of a visual
concept if my verbal explanation was combined with a diagram of
that concept.”

Civil Rights/African-American Interest
He made history.
He tells the truth
he knows.
“It’s perhaps too easy, in this day and age of omnipresent brain
candy, to pass by a title like this one; it looks like work. The cover
reminds that its author, Terrence Roberts, is one of the Little
Rock Nine, nine courageous African-American students who
volunteered to be the first to integrate Little Rock’s Central High
School in 1957 under the limited (in the sense that Army personnel
did not enter the gym or the classroom) protection of the U.S.
Army’s 101st Airborne Division, and who endured a year of daily
hostility and abuse. Roberts went on to become a psychologist,
educator, and speaker.”
—ForeWord Reviews
“In Simple, Not Easy, Roberts provides discourse on predictable
topics—education, ethics, racism, community, and family—but he
does so with humor and grace. Along the way, there is plenty of
autobiography, not only about Little Rock but also about his life
both before and after those history-changing days in 1957. The
volume concludes, appropriately, with reflections on President
Obama. Thought provoking and inspiring commentary.

“Psychologist and management consultant Roberts, here presents
speeches he has given over the last 20 years that represent his core
values and his concerns for our society. These addresses—which
give us glimpses into Roberts’s remarkable life—are written with
an understanding and sensitivity to the idea that thinking beyond
the ordinary and working for real change is simple, while things
that are truly worth doing are rarely, if ever, easy.”
—Library Journal
He was once a scared teen, facing-off an armed soldier who denied him access to Little Rock Central
High School. He was admitted only after President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne Division
of the US Army to escort him into the school. Now he is a hero of the Civil Rights struggle, a recipient
of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Perhaps you have seen or heard him on Oprah, The Tavis
Smiley Show, The Today Show, or other media. A psychologist and a former university dean, he now
tours the country giving up to 100 speeches a year. This book collects key Martin Luther King Day
speeches and other public addresses that reflect his core values and his concerns for our society.

Christian Storytelling
A moving story of

In writing a nativity story from the point of view of a boy
who lives in the stable, Shirley Taylor has given us a vivid
account of Christ’s birth and a motivating experience to
readers and hearers, alike. Likely to become an ‘instant
classic’ of Christian literature, this simple story will inspire
thousands of retellings by pastors, Christian educators,
parents and grandparents.
“I loved this fresh look at a familiar story, and the cat in the
illustrations. It is important to tell old stories with new voices,
otherwise we stop listening to them since we already think we
know them.”

Biography/United States Congress
The remarkable
life of a smalltown boy who
became the most
powerful man in
Congress
“Wilbur Mills was a man of enormous skill and intellect who
made significant contributions to the prosperity of this nation,
benefitting generations of Americans to this day. And Kay Goss
has captured it all—from his humble roots in Arkansas to his
many accomplishments at the pinnacle of power in Washington
D.C.—it’s all here. Goss presents a comprehensive profile of Mills’
long and distinguished career of public service, while chronicling
without compromise the human side of the man as well—the man
his constituents, colleagues and Presidents called ‘Mr. Chairman’.”
–Rob Leonard, former General Counsel to the US House of
Representatives Committee on Ways and Means

“Kay Goss has special and personal knowledge of Wilbur Mills,
both ‘The Chairman’ and the simply human. She shares it with us
wonderfully. Mr. Mills provided steady help and hope for ordinary
working Americans and for those in need beginning in 1934 with
what was in effect a ‘County Medicaid’ program while serving as
County Judge in White County, and later the massive strengthening
of Social Security and creation of Medicare and Medicaid, which he
shepherded through Congress as Chairman of Ways and Means.
His good deeds live on in the memories of those who watched and
in the lives of those receiving these services today!”
–James Guy Tucker, Former Arkansas Governor and Congressman
KAY COLLETT GOSS met Wilbur Mills during her teaching tenure
at the University of Arkansas, her alma mater. Doctoral studies
in public administration at West Virginia University lead her to
serve Congressman Ray Thornton, where she observed Mills
and married his chief of staff, Gene Goss. President Clinton
named her Associate FEMA Director in charge of National
Preparedness. Goss now serves as President of World Disaster
Management, LLC.
