Fall 2013 *)4 *)4 THE INSIDER . . . Saint John’s Catholic Prep Special Graduation and Honor Roll of Donors Issue “ You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by bringing them into touch with yourself, by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them.” - St. John Bosco Patron Saint of Education Congratulations to the Class of 2013 and First Class to Graduate from the New Buckeystown Campus! Graduation Remarks from President Gordon Oliver (Edited from full original speech) Congratulations to the Class of 2013! On behalf of our Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations, I welcome the class of 2013 to the Saint John’s Alumni Association. I want to thank you for being the second consecutive graduating class having 100% participation in the Alumni Annual Fund Campaign. Our ability to successfully fund-raise at all levels is a vital component of the schools budgeting and operational success. I also hope you enjoyed the Prospect Hall Mansion print you received at the Senior Dinner in your bags from the Advancement office. We wanted you to have these as a memento for the three and a half years that the Prospect Hall Campus was your home. I would like to recognize the members of our schools Governing Board who are with us to share in this special celebration and rite of passage. It is because of our Boards vision, fortitude, and generosity, that we are able to celebrate graduation this afternoon for the first time in memory on our own campus. On behalf of the entire school community, thank you! Regardless, of where we as a school community are physically located the unwavering commitment of our faculty to our students and to Catholic education remains unsurpassed. Christopher Pliszak receives his diploma from Mr. Gordon Oliver during the 2013 Commencement Ceremony A caring and competent faculty and coaching staff forms the foundation of our schools success and to ensuring that each year our graduates are consistently accepted to the most exacting colleges and universities. I want to acknowledge Mrs. Pieklo, Mrs. Splaine, and Mrs. Sherwin for their efforts coordinating the graduation week activities and express gratitude to our buildings and grounds staff Mr. DeLeon, Miss Patty, and Eugene Ambush for making the campus both inside and out sparkle. Of special note is that this is Mrs. Pieklo’s 30th year at Saint John’s and coordinating graduation. Thank you Mrs. Pieklo! To the parents and guardians of our graduates - thank you for sharing your children with us and for entrusting their secondary education to Saint John’s. Actor, producer and director Woody Allen is generally credited with coining the term “80% of life is showing up.” There is certainly a strong grain of truth to this statement. If we look back to the innumerable pages of history we can only surmise what would have happened if General Douglas McArthur had not returned to the Pacific when he famously said “I shall return” which of course he did. Or what would have happened if the allied forces never showed up on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Although he was not one of the original twelve Apostles but probably the most dynamic of them all Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus before his conversion, developed a reputation for ferocious enmity toward Christians. What would have happened if Paul had not shown up to take the road on his trip to Damascus and on the way being thrown to the ground blinded by a dazzling light wherein Christ appeared to him and Cont. on next page BOARD OF DIRECTORS Gregory Harraka, Chairman Michael Smariga ’62, Vice Chairman Richard Hassett ’67, Treasurer Pam Zusi, Secretary Kathleen Costlow D’Amore William Dahut Patrick Hogan Rev. Msgr. Robert Jaskot Amy Manson Keating Michael O’Connor ‘84 James Plamondon Dr. Richard Rogers Graduation Remarks cont. he was instantly converted. Taken in historical context St. Paul was probably the greatest missionary in history other that Pope John Paul II whose acclaimed pilgrimages of faith took him around the world evangelizing and preaching. St. Paul did not have the benefit of planes, cars and trains for his missionary travels. Still, St. Paul’s travels took him throughout the then known world of the Mediterranean preaching and famously converting whole communities to Christianity. According to his confidant and chief biographer Doctor of the Church, theologian and Saint, Thomas Aquinas encountered God in a different way. Held in captivity his faith was tested by worldly temptations and when he fell asleep after praying two Angels were sent to him from heaven by the Lord. Enlightened by the Lord during his incarceration we can only speculate on what would have happened. Would we have his five proofs for the existence of God? Would we have the Summa Theologica? Would we have his supposition that both faith and reason are derived from the same divine wellspring? Sometimes we look for the Lord to show up in our lives in ways that transcend every day experiences and occurrences. One of my graduate school professor’s Sister Timothy was fond of reminding us that the Lord doesn’t do instantaneous magic tricks. The Lord makes His presence known to us in ways that we sometimes take for granted. In Psalm 50 verse 15 the Lord says “Then call upon me in the time of distress: I will rescue you and you will honor me.” I am reminded of the story about the only survivor of a shipwreck who was washed up on a small uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help or some instantaneous miracle but none seemed forthcoming. Joseph Welty Exhausted he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION The worst had happened. His hut had caught on fire. Everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me!” he lamented. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. They replied, “We saw your smoke signal.” Gordon Oliver, President Marc Minsker, Interim Principal Diane Favret, Executive Director for Advancement Eric Dummann, Dean of Students Cathy Campbell, School Counselor Thomas Whedbee, School Counselor Michael Schultz, Director of Enrollment Management Ann Blessing, Business Manager Judith Robison, Director of Technology Dawn Miller, Director of Campus Ministry Silas Cheung, Athletic Director Paul DeLeon, Director of Facilities Melissa Phillips, Curriculum Coordinator Sue Swensen, AdministratorDatabase & Website Marge Pieklo, Executive Assistant Linda Petrie, Administrative Assistant Diane Keser, Receptionist We can all recall a time when we were discouraged and failed to recognize that the Lord was at work in our lives. He shows up for us the timing of which is not usually of our own choosing and in ways that are not always outwardly apparent to us. Much of our Lord’s presence and Grace is felt through the workings of the Holy Spirit third person in the Holy Trinity. Last week we celebrated Pentecost Sunday commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit who first appeared to the Apostles. In your own lives and on a personal everyday level showing up has many implications and facets. We show up to class, we show up to work or for a for a job interview and we eagerly speed down the school hallway in anticipation of savoring the delicious lunches that Mrs. Foss and her staff serve in the Viking Café here on campus. Each of you of the class of 2013, in all of its manifestations, as Woody Allen would say “showed up” and by virtue of this, you are graduates of Saint John’s. Remember, the future will always involve showing up. I wish you all the best on the next leg of your journey. Good bye, good luck and God bless! From the Principal: It’s hard to believe that another school year has come and gone, and with it, lots of changes for SJCP. First and foremost, the 2013-2014 school year will be the inaugural year at our fine Buckeystown Campus. Students are taking great pride in our new facilities and I anticipate that many of them will help us make the school more homelike by adding their special touches, such as artwork hanging in the hallways and a senior garden on the campus. Though I am saddened by the departure of Chris Cosentino, with whom I have worked closely for the past seven years, I am excited to take on the challenge of principal and look forward to working closely with all of our faculty, not the least of which being our four new teachers: Kelsey Carper (English), T.C. DiBartolo (Technology), Wayne Rousculp (Math), and Thanh Tran (Latin). Our faculty truly demonstrate time and time again what it means to model both scholarship and decorum. Through their everyday interactions with students in the classroom, they teach more than just content; they show students how the skills gleaned in our college preparatory environment prepare students for more than just college. Students hopefully leave our school as better citizens, as compassionate individuals, and as inquisitive seekers, all interested in not only their own future but the future of all of humanity. At this year’s World Youth Day in Rio, Pope Francis said, “Our generation will show that it can realize the promise found in each young person when we know…how to awaken in them their greatest potential as builders of their own destiny, sharing responsibility for the future of everyone.” It is extremely important for our institution, grounded in our Jesuit roots and the teachings of Christ, to strive towards this awakening and to show our students that their own personal destiny (where they go to college, what they major in, how they live their lives) is inextricably linked to the world’s destiny. Although they probably don’t understand this now, we are relying on them to make society a better place. There is a lot of excitement in the air as we begin our first full year at the Buckeystown Campus. Our AP program is the strongest that it’s ever been (with 75% of the AP exams taken last year earning a qualifying grade of 3 or higher) and we are working tirelessly towards the implementation of Common Core Standards. In regards to this last point, we have brought Melissa Phillips onto the administration as Curriculum Coordinator and she will be working closely with me to ensure that we meet Common Core standards as mandated by the State of Maryland. I look forward to working with alumni, parents, grandparents, and other members of the community as we continue to expand the role and identity of Saint John’s Catholic Prep in Frederick and the surrounding counties. Marc Minsker Interim Principal Page 2 Our AP program is the strongest that it’s ever been - with 75% of the AP exams taken last year earning a qualifying grade of 3 or higher. The rank of Eagle Scout is the crowning achievement of a long and difficult process. To earn this designation, a Boy Scout must demonstrate excellence in leadership, service and outdoor skills, and must have earned a minimum of 21 merit badges. The culminating project is the Eagle project, for which the scout organizes, fundraises, and leads. Each of the three seniors worked over five years to complete this process. All three scouts are also brotherhood members of the Order of the Arrow, the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. It uses American Indian-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplifying the ideals of Scouting, with emphasis on camping and service. Alex Collins is a member of Troop 1097 in Germantown, MD. His Eagle project was putting in a 90 foot paver pathway at The Barnesville School in Barnesville, MD (his elementary and middle school). Alex remarked that “Scouting taught me leadership skills.” Alex will be attending Mount St. Mary’s University in the fall. Pictured left to right: Alex Collins, Brian Hickman, Forrest Lisle. Brian Hickman, a member of Troop 1066 in Jefferson, MD, organized and led the building of an obstacle / training course at Mar-Lou-Ridge Camp and Retreat Center in Jefferson, Md. Brian stated that “Scouting gave me the ideals by which I live my life.” Brian will be attending Salisbury State University in the fall. Forrest Lisle is a member of Troop 268 in New Market, MD. For his Eagle project, Forrest organized and led the rebuilding of the outdoor classroom at Oakdale Middle School in New Market. Forrest commented, “Scouting taught me about leadership. I grew up in Scouting.” Forrest will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall. Page 4 Chris Cosentino Bids SJCP Farewell Mr. Chris Cosentino surprised the students & returned to campus on Thursday, August 29 for homeroom and the oppor tunity to say good bye. In July, Mr. Cosentino accepted a position with the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) as the Associate Executive Director of the Secondary Schools Depar tment, therefore he was unable to say goodbye to the students. At homeroom, Mr. Cosentino led the students in prayer, the pledge of allegiance and did the morning announcements one last time. He then told the students he misses them already and he will always be a par t of Saint John’s. President Gordon Oliver thanked Mr. Cosentino for his loyal and hard work for the past seven years, then presented him with a plaque to recognize his years of service and dedication to Saint John’s. The SJCP School Community wishes Mr. Cosentino the best of luck in his new endeavor as he continues his journey in Catholic education. Presidents Reception to Thank Benefactors On April 25th, Gordon Oliver held his Annual President’s Reception to recognize and thank major benefactors who contributed over $1,000 to the Annual Fund. Over sixty people gathered in the new school lobby and library to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. President Oliver stated, “I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your contributions to help suppor t our school community and Catholic education. Our future continues to be bright because of your continued generosity.” It was a wonderful evening of fellowship and another oppor tunity to showcase our beautiful, new campus. New Chapel Blessed On Friday, May 3, 2013 His Excellency Bishop Mitchell Rozanski visited SJCP to lead the “Blessing Ceremony” of the school’s chapel. Senior Amelia Clark and Sophomore Godwin Igbinedion read from the Scriptures during the ceremony; Ms. Dawn Miller, Campus Minister, lead the Members of the Saint John’s faculty and administration group in song. Mr. Oliver, Mr. pose with Bishop Rozanski after the blessing of the chapel. Cosentino, Mrs. Pieklo, Mrs. Lecuona and Mr. Schultz were on hand to celebrate the joyous event. First Mass Held in Chapel The first Mass in the school chapel was held on May 17th with the Trustees of the St. John’s Charitable Trust. The Charitable Trust was established in 1992 by a group of philanthropic donors to preserve the Trust assets for the benefit of the school. The Trustees liquidated the fund to suppor t the re-purposing of the new academic building and also provide the Chapel. Members of the Trust include: Bernie Grove, Leo Rocca, Mike Smariga and Dewey Jordan. They were instrumental in helping the school during some difficult financial times and SJCP will be forever grateful. It was an honor to celebrate the first Mass in the Chapel with the benefactors who made the Chapel possible. Msgr. Rober t Jaskot was the Celebrant. Serving as Lectors were Greg Harraka, Mike Smariga and Gordon Oliver. Closing remarks of praise and gratitude were given by Diane Favret, who also presented the Trustees with a Father John McElroy, S.J. Medal. Following the Mass, a luncheon was held for the Trustees and their guests. Pictured left to right: Mike Smariga, Leo Rocca, Stella Jordan and Bernie Grove. Mr. Van was recognized at the 2013 Archdiocesan Convocation along with other teachers from schools across the Archdiocese. As you may know, many non-profit organizations – including Saint John’s Catholic Prep, rely on charitable donations and planned giving strategies implemented by generous donors to help fund operations and support the organization’s long-term financial needs. Planned gifts of life insurance, appreciated holdings, charitable trusts, and bequests are among the many ways to support the future of Saint John’s. Planned gifts are strategic charitable contributions that can provide the donor with important tax benefits now and in the future. An attractive planned giving strategy is donating appreciated stock or other securities. Many taxpayers may have appreciated stock that would be ripe for donation. This strategy offers an immediate income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities and avoids capital gains taxes. There are many other planned giving options that offer a wide array of immediate and long-term tax benefits, which is a great way to reduce your tax burden while helping your charity of choice. We encourage you to please consider Saint John’s. Please check with your financial advisor to see what works best for you. Congratulations Mr. Van! Dyer, MD A Message from The Chairman of the Board and The Executive Director for Advancement On Behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for your generous support of our 2012-2013 fundraising efforts. Your financial sacrifices to help ensure Saint John’s Catholic Prep’s continued success are greatly recognized and appreciated. The substantial support from our school community made it possible for Saint John’s to not only meet but to exceed its fundraising goals. Cash contributions from all sources of income totaled $767,971 – an increase of $241,785 over the previous year. With moving to our new campus, it was especially important that we met our budgeted fundraising goals. Thank you! Your continued financial support is a tangible expression of your belief in our mission to provide an excellent Catholic, college prep education for students to grow spiritually, morally, academically and physically. We are now gearing up for the next important phase of raising funds at our new campus – the installation of new softball & baseball fields for the spring, 2014 season. It is my sincere hope that you will continue to support this wonderful school and partner with us as we expand the opportunities at Saint John’s associated with our campus master plan - for this generation and the next generations to come. Thank you again for your generosity. Gregory E. Harraka Board Chairman Again this year in an effort to conserve expences, the Honor Roll of Donors Report is combined with the Fall Newsletter and is a modest recognition of an exceptional year. Please take a few moments to read through the report. Thank you one and all for your generous support of this year’s fundraising efforts. A very special thank you is extended to our parents for their continued enthusiasm and generosity. They help make all we do at Saint John’s possible and their support is never taken for granted. For the second consecutive year, our school community came together and made it possible for Saint John’s to surpass its Annual Fund budgeted goal. By working together, we continue to reach positive results with our fundraising efforts to help ensure that Saint John’s has the resources needed to strive for excellence. The 32nd Annual Soirée was a fun and festive event with a Kentucky Derby theme and the Booster Club’s second annual BBQ Bash grew with more parents and alumni coming together to support our athletic programs. Several Legacy Campaign pledges were fulfilled early and the Knott Foundation Matching Grant for Technology brought in a total of $120K to help improve technology for teaching and learning. Now more than ever, the generosity from our donors is crucial, allowing us to help close the gap between the tuition rate and the true cost of a Saint John’s education. Please be assured that our faculty, staff and students at Saint John’s are tremendously grateful. Many, many thanks to all who helped Saint John’s end fiscal year 2013 on an inspiring note.
