Dunklin Memorial Church was founded by Mickey and Laura Maye Evans in 1963 when 160 acres were purchased in the western part of Martin County for the
purpose of building an alcoholic regeneration center to minister to the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of addicted persons. Since that time, God has
greatly blessed D.M.C. with an expanded ministry and with new additions as needs have arisen. We give thanks and all glory to Jesus Christ our Lord for what
He has done and look forward to what He wants to accomplish through our various ministries.
CAMPFIRE
The campfire is a monthly publication proclaiming what the Lord Jesus Christ can do and has done for men in bondage to alcohol and drugs. This publication
does not represent any particular denomination, but seeks to encourage all believers “to keep the unity of the Spirit”, (Eph. 4:3), not in the letter of the law, but in
the spirit of meekness and love. There is no subscription price. The Campfire is maintained by the freewill offerings of those who wish to share in its ministry.
FINANCING
Our ministry is made possible by love offerings from churches, groups and individuals who share the burden and blessing of helping alcoholics and drug addicts
help themselves. We strive through various self help projects to supplement the love offering and donations so as to be greater stewards of what God gives us in our
expanding ministry. Because of our religious nature we are exempt from licensing by the state of Florida. However, D.M.C. is registered with the state of Florida as
a nonprofit, religious corporation. All gifts are tax deductible.

“A Blessing from Bro Mickey.”
“Arriving at Jerusalem, they met with the
church leaders—all the Apostles and elders were
present—and Paul and Barnabas reported what
they had been doing in their ministry.”
(Acts 15: 4 L.B.)
“And behold, I send the promise of my Father
upon you: but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until
you are endowed with power from on high.”
(Luke 24 : 47 L.B.)
Last month we had our annual meeting of our
alumni leaders who are leading Christians alcohol
and drug programs. It was a Homecoming event
and Jesus came to our prayer meeting. These
men and women were “called by the Lord” to
start new ministries or to work on staff in
programs that were already started. They were
“blessed out” by the church that meets at
Dunklin who pledged to pray for them.
Their commission was to “comfort others with
the comfort that they, themselves, had been
comforted of the Lord” (II Cor 1: 4). They all
had a unique testimony of their personal
deliverance from alcoholism and drug addiction,
the same ministry training classes, and practical
experiences that prepared them for leadership.
They graduated from the “school of hard knocks”
and had a personal experience of the indwelling
presence of Jesus and an unmistakable call from
Him to enter into full time recovery ministries.
They have established new Cities of Refuge in
seven states and eight foreign countries.
We had two days of communion and prayers
of praise for His past provision, petition for the
future and supplication for the addicts all over
the world that need recovery. Each program is
indigenous and self sustaining and has their own
governing structures but they share a common
commitment that is foundational to Dunklin.
Their primary program is to work with addicts,
and to extend ministry to these families to help
re-establish their broken relationships, and then
to train the next generation of emerging leaders.
We share the common vision of these principles.
The retreat was a blessing to all of our staff to
see the students they trained succeeding in their
ministries and it was also an inspiration to the
men in the program. We look forward to our
47th Annual Homecoming this month, on Nov
27th to 29th, when we expect students and
families that have gone through our recovery
program over the many years. We are preparing
enough food to feed an army and preparing
every bed that we have available for our Dunklin
family. Most of our “old timers” have “graduated
to Glory” but they planted seeds and laid the
foundations for each succeeding generation.
Homecoming is “payday” for the staff and an
inspiration to the men in the program that their
future too can be divinely different from their
past.
We are very grateful to our rancher and dairy
friends that shared in our Yearling-a-Year love
offerings last month. This is our only fund
raising event every year and is a very important
aspect of our support base. Cattle and hogs are
shared for our meat supply and brood cows and
heifers are added to our cattle herd which is our
second largest industry.
The “greening disease”, a plague from China
that threatens the whole citrus industry, has
invaded us, too and we have had to replace
some of our groves with hay grass, expanding
our cattle herd. We will have enough fruit to
continue our Christmas gift shipments this year
so please remember us when you are ready to
send gifts to your friends and family.
The global epidemic of alcoholism and drug
addiction has created new mission fields in every
continent, but the Lord is raising up the next
generation of Harvesters and they have the
dedication and skills to build new Cities of
Refuge. We sent out families to Canada and
Virginia last month and two single men are going
to Houma, LA this month.
1
And a new City of Refuge was birthed in
Homestead, FL this past month by four of our
alumni students. Halleluiah!
We are deeply grateful to the Campfire
contributors and Churches that send monthly
donations to our ministers. Your partnership
makes our programs possible. Thank you from
the bottom o f our hearts!
Lots of Love,
P.S.
Prayer Island
has become a “Garden of Eden”, a favorite place
for quiet time and reconciliation for couples and
their children on weekends. Like the ancient
tabernacle in the wilderness, it has become a
“place to meet with God” (Elijah 33:7). We are
very grateful for the many people who donated the
plants and the labor to create this beautiful prayer
garden and to the volunteers who come on
Saturdays to maintain it. Our whole community is
blessed by their generosity.

Listening Prayer
“ Be still and know I am God…”
(Ps 46:10)
“ … to be strengthened with might by His Spirit
(Eph 3:16)
in the inner man.”
One of the most important principles that we
practice in our regeneration program is called
simply our “quiet time”. The early AA groups
called it their “morning watch” where they
practiced the simple principles that were
foundational to their recovery program movement.
1. They read the Bible
2. They prayed
3. They listened to God
4. They recorded in their journals the
conversation with Christ.
Jesus said, “my sheep hear my voice, and I know
them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
It is a beautiful sight to me to see our men
sitting early every morning under the gazebos and
on Prayer Island listening and communicating with
God. Listening prayer is not a new discovery. It is
a time honored and proven method of communion
with God that has been ignored by modern
Christianity. We have, many times “heard about
God”, without “hearing from God” for the
2
“renewing” of our minds, that we may know,
precisely, what the good and perfect will of God
is for our lives” (Rom 12:2)
Jesus told His disciples, “when you pray, go
away by yourself, all alone, and shut the door
behind you and pray to your Father secretly.
Then your Father, who knows all secrets, will
reward you.” (Matt 6:6) Again Jesus said “ all
who are of the truth hear my voice.”
A.W Toyer said “ what God has done for any of
His children, he will do for all of His children.”
Your daily practice of these four simple
principles will greatly enrich your fellowship and
intimacy with God. If you do it faithfully, it will
change your life.
Prayer Island is a safe retreat
Where God and man can always meet
God sees those tears and hears that sigh
He's helped so many, won't pass you by
"Call upon Me" is His request
For you He'll do the very best
Picture Christ welcoming at the door
Those wounded hands you can't ignore
He called you "Come" from yonder tree
Forgiveness there was vast and free
You have not because you ask not
So let Me hear your voice
I'm the Comforter and the Healer
Make Me alone your choice
I'm able to bear your burden
All I want is for you to share
Cross the bridge to Prayer Island
Be sure I'll meet you there
No, I cannot bring back that loved one
But I provided for his rest
One day I'll make it plain to you
Bearing burdens is what I do best
No appointment is necessary
To reach the Savior's ear
He bids you boldly come
Without distraction, doubt or fear
A precious soul will find the Savior
And leave with perfect peace
A couple will reunite
Prayer will bring such sweet release
Some may call it a Memory Garden
Many thoughts will there unfold
Nothing can erase these treasures
Far more value than purest gold
By Ray Zander
I am constantly
reminded that programs
do not change people's
lives but only God can.
What Christ centered
programs, in reality, do
is provide a structured
opportunity for the
Ronnie & Vivian Lacuesta,
Canaan International addict to get into a
relationship with God.
After that it is one miracle after another. This is true
only if the people working in these programs are not
under the illusion that addiction can be healed through
behavior modification. The field of recovery ministry
is such a misunderstood field. The assumptions are
endless in our society ranging from a thinking "if we
can only get this person into a program he will be fine,"
which comes hand in hand with the belief that "if we
can only get him off drugs and alcohol he will be
substance free for the rest of his life." To emotionally
wounded people with dreams of being involved in
romantic causes to help people by creating projects that
would yield results statistically and financially, are
fantasies because of these misconceptions, which I had
only named a few, there are more than I can count on
my fingers; is enough to keep the epidemic going.
Addiction is an integrated problem which requires a
three dimensional solution. It requires physical,
emotional and spiritual help. And it is a process that
last a lifetime. The problem with our society is that we
want to outsource our love to others who can handle
these things professionally and return them to us
perfect. Recovery is a lifetime painstaking process,
which involves community and families providing an
environment of this self-sacrificial love. It involves
adopting dysfunctional families and walking with them
for the rest of their lives. It especially involves
prevention by being involved with our children, not
merely keeping them busy watching television or
playing video games. This is truly the solution to
addiction worldwide. This is what we are doing in our
Cities of Refuge throughout Latin America and here in
the United States. We are not professionals; but we are
a worldwide community who refuses to outsource our
love any longer.
OPEN HOUSE IN HOMESTEAD, FL:
Our City of
Refuge is up and
running in
Homestead,
Florida.
1 1/2 years ago we opened our first Hispanic family
recovery group there, later it gave birth to an English
speaking recovery group and an Overcomer’s support
group for community members, recovering addicts and
their families. On September 6 we officially
inaugurated Friendship House, a discipleship program
for recovering addicts. It was a day of family,
fellowship, of laughing and of joyful tears. Our men
are already impacting the neighborhood with their
hospitality, acts of service and compassion for the
children and youth.

About Us:
Raising Canaan
Going from Raising Cain to Raising Canaan. A
group of recovering addicts got together and
decided it was time to give back instead of just
taking. We decided instead of just giving money
we would go to work. We take mission trips
regularly to Colombia. Ray Nelson –Group
Leader now goes for 6-7 wks at a time. Together
they have worked on and built buildings, done
repairs, taught, and are now building the
Northrup International Training Center. Their
mission is to apply the love of God in their every
day life: raise funds needed to go down to South
America, and help financially support Canaan in
Colombia and the City of Refuge in Peru.
