PROVIDENCE ST. MEL SCHOOL
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
A Message from Paul J. Adams III, Executive Chairman,
& Jeanette DiBella, President
Achievement, excellence,
success— they never go out of
season.
And at Providence St. Mel School,
they are always in season, year
after year. This year, and for the
36th consecutive year, 100 percent
of our graduates were accepted to
four-year colleges and universities.
Of the Class of 2014, a remarkable
93 percent of these seniors were
accepted to a “tier one” institution,
and 32 percent, to one of the
ranked “Top 50” colleges, as rated
by U.S. News and World Report.
These graduates achieved a class
average score of 24 on the ACT,
while the national composite
average is only 20.9. And for the
top 25 percent of our Class of 2014,
the score was 29!
Were this not impressive enough,
our newest graduates are receiving
over $5 million in scholarships
from the colleges and universities
they are now attending. (Indeed,
over the past five years, our
graduates have received $22
million in college scholarships!)
At Providence St. Mel, we are
passionate in our commitment
to provide the transformative
education that prepares students
for success not only in college but
in life. We inspire our students
to achieve the highest level of
academic excellence by ensuring
that our school continually
improves, reaches higher, works
harder, does more.
In 2013-2014, Providence St. Mel:
• Incorporated iPads in our
elementary school classrooms
as part of the reading curriculum,
vaulting over the “digital divide,”
so that our students, even our
younger ones, remain
competitive.
• Started a robotics program
to enhance the already robust
science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM) education
offered at our school.
• Implemented the new Response
to Intervention (RTI), an
individualized, tiered program
to empower underperforming
students to “catch up” to their
peers, perform at grade level, and
receive a truly collegepreparatory education.
Paul J. Adams III
Executive Chairman
• Improved our security system
by building a new protective
entryway and upgrading stateof-the-art monitoring equipment,
in addition to refining our
emergency preparedness and
crisis intervention plans.
Enabling our school to continue
to provide a safe environment,
this new security feature is one
of only a number of building
improvements that will be coming
to Providence St. Mel next year, to
ensure that ours remains the most
productive learning environment
for our students, no matter the
season.
The achievement, excellence,
and success — and sustaining
each — depend on collective hard
work. Without you, our supporters
and friends, none of what we
accomplished during this year,
or through the years, would have
been possible. With gratitude, pride,
but also humility, we commend
everyone who contributed to
making this another incredible
year.

PROVIDENCE ST. MEL SCHOOL
Thank You Mike O’Halleran!
In February 2014, after nearly eight years at the
helm, Mr. Michael O’Halleran stepped down as
chair of the Providence St. Mel School board of
trustees, handing over the gavel to Ms. Denise
Seminetta.
From the start of his tenure as chair, as we
began a third decade as an independent collegepreparatory school, this 1968 graduate of St.
Mel High School, sought to elevate the already
recognized stature of and extend the record of
academic excellence at Providence St. Mel.
And he certainly did just that!
His vision and dedication over the past several
years, his exemplary leadership and tireless
service, have had an immeasurable impact
on our school and for our students and their
families. Although he is stepping down as chair,
he is not stepping away from our board of
trustees. We are fortunate that Mike will continue
to serve actively as a trustee. He remains
committed to help Providence St. Mel to fulfill its
mission and to give back to an institution that
has transformed so many young lives. Time and
again, he has proved, and will continue to prove,
himself to be a man for all seasons.
All of us at Providence St. Mel — our students,
teachers and staff, alumni, and his fellow trustees
— thank Mike for his hard work, good judgment,
wise counsel, and affable spirit.
PROVIDENCE ST. MEL SCHOOL
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
A Message from Denise Seminetta,
Chair of the Board of Trustees
On behalf of our students, their
families, and our teachers,
administrators, and staff, my
fellow board members and I thank
our newest donors for your most
welcome support and thank our
longtime supporters for your
unwavering commitment and
unstinting generosity.
All of us at Providence St. Mel
School are deeply grateful.
This year marks the start of my
tenure as the chair of the board of
trustees. One might say that 2014
signals something of a new season,
especially for me, and I could not
be more excited or honored as I
undertake this most gratifying role.
The transition to board chair has
been smooth, thanks in large
part to the solid footing provided
by outgoing chair, Mr. Michael
O’Halleran, who for nearly
eight years offered inspirational
leadership, dedicated service,
sure-handed guidance, and good
humor.
Although unlucky to be the one to
follow in such footsteps, I am so
very fortunate that a way ahead has
been pointed and that I have the
help and company of my fellow
trustees as we look to the future,
move forward, and work to make
an already vibrant, successful, and
extraordinary school even better.
With delight, gratitude, and,
of course, humility, I join
my colleagues to ensure that
Providence St. Mel continues
to maintain only the highest
academic standards, to teach,
challenge, and guide students, to
provide hope to a disadvantaged
inner-city community, and to
be that responsible steward of
the vital resources which your
contributions make possible.
By keeping Providence St. Mel
at the top of your philanthropic
priorities, you enable this
remarkable school to deliver
an exceptional, life-changing,
competitive, and wholly college
preparatory education to deserving
children whose families face
immense financial limitations.
As you review this annual
report and note some of the
accomplishments and highlights
of the 2013-2014 academic
year, please recognize that this
successful year would not have
been possible without you.
All of us at Providence St. Mel
express our great gratitude to
you, our donors and partners.
We are fortunate and honored to
have such a strong community of
supporters who share in our belief
that a quality education can make a
profound difference in the lives of
our students and for their families.
We hope that you will continue to
support Providence St. Mel, our
students, our mission, our work.

2014 ANNUAL REPORT

You can make a difference!
Our students need your financial help today.
Providence St. Mel keeps tuition low so that students, who otherwise
would not have the opportunity, can have the chance at an excellent
college-preparatory education. But this low tuition is much more than
our struggling families can afford. Families recognize the quality and
promise of a Providence St. Mel education. They pay what they can —
and all families must pay something — towards their child’s education.
But this amount seldom covers the tuition and never covers the true,
full cost of education, which is more than double our tuition.
Even though our school automatically underwrites more than half of this
cost, the great majority of our students require yet additional financial
assistance. Only with the support of such caring partners as you can
Providence St. Mel continue to keep tuition low, offer indispensable
scholarships, and deliver effective classroom instruction and exceptional
enrichment programs that enable students to excel and succeed.
Please join our other supporters today and be as generous as you can.

Mission Statement
At Providence St. Mel, we believe.
We believe in the creation of inspired
lives produced by the miracle of hard
work. We are not frightened by the
challenges of reality, but believe that
we can change our conception of this
world and our place within it.
So we WORK, PLAN, BUILD, and
DREAM – in that order. We believe
that one must earn the right to dream.
Our talent, discipline, and integrity will
be our contribution to a new world,
because we believe we can take this
place, this time and this people, and
make a better place, a better time, and a
better people. With God’s help, we will
either find a way or make one.
