CAMP
LEADERSHIP TEAM
Keri DeBowes,
Director of Youth
Development
A native of Delray Beach,
Keri DeBowes received her
Bachelor’s degree from Florida
State University in Child
and Family Sciences. During
her college days, Keri took
a position at a local YMCA
overnight camp in Tallahassee
and right away she knew her calling. She came to love the Y’s
mission and knew it would become her career.
Keri says a favorite part of her role is seeing the kids smile,
building friendships and learning each step of the way. Working
in the childcare field for over 5 years now Keri’s passion for what
she does is evident. When asked what she enjoys most about
working for the Y she said, “I love working for an organization
that gives back so much to the community and truly cares about
the people who walk in our doors each day.”
Sandra Dejesus,
Camp & LIT
Coordinator
Born and raised in the
city of Boynton Beach,
Sandra was determined
to find a future that
would give her the
opportunity to express
her creative abilities.
Having experience as a volunteer for the community of
San Castle Sheriff’s department and being awarded a
$6,000 scholarship for her education – Sandra knows
what it means to be dedicated.
She started with the Y in 2006 in the child watch center,
assisting in preschool and supervising Kids Club. “I began
to realize that the Y offers so much for the community
and this is what I love to do – helping others feel better
about themselves and impact lives positively.” In the past
4 years Sandra has started a dance team at the Y – The
Shooting Stars – which helped her realize a dream. Her
goal for each individual that joins the team is to build
self-esteem and cultivate strong minds. Sandra has
completed her 40 hour child care certification and is
looking forward to continuing her education in child care.

Donna Angus,
Director of Preschool
While Miss Donna, as she’s
known, is from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania she has been in
Florida working in Childcare
with the YMCA for nearly
19 years.
On a daily basis her inspiration
is being able to help families
and kids. She explained, “I enjoy working for the Y because we
have the ability to go out and help the community and I like
seeing the difference we can make.”
Donna received a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from
Slippery Rock University, Pennsylvania and holds her Florida
Childcare and Education program Director Credential.
Sam Sheilds,
Director of Sports
Sam most recently hails
from the Central Florida
YMCA, where she also
coordinated and developed
youth and adult sports
programs.
A two-sport athlete,
Sam earned collegiate
scholarship offers in both basketball and track and field. As
a student athlete, Samantha was a part of UCF’s track and
field team, where she competed in the heptathlon. Samantha
referee’s youth and adult recreational basketball games
as well as AAU basketball at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
Samantha earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, and a
minor from the DeVos Sport Business Management program
while attending the great University of Central Florida in
Orlando. She received her Master of Business Administration
in Communications and media management from Lynn
University.
A Denver Colorado native, Samantha is an avid Denver
sports fan!
SPOTLIGHT
PROGRAM
YBIKE
We are thrilled to be bringing back our YBIKE Program. This program
was started to help empower our youth to ride bikes for fun, fitness
and transportation.
We aim to teach kids bike safety, biking skills, environmental safety and
plan to travel to bike parks for field trips too!
VOLUNTEER with YBIKE! We have a range of volunteer options from bicycle
mechanics, to working with youth, to the crucial organizational/office work.
The goal is to teach youth (and community) how to fix bikes, ride bikes
and go on safe city excursions. We can always use an extra hand in the
process!
To volunteer or offer support to this program, contact Volunteer Coordinator:
Joe Burns at 561-893-2153 or [email protected]. To get started visit ymcaspbc.org/volunteer and
fill out the volunteer application.
SUMMER CAMP
PROGRAMS
“My daughter learned the importance of fitness, and eating
better and taking care of yourself. She has great counselors
that were positive and motivated her to do the best she
can do. She also made friends... This was the first camp she
really enjoyed and it increased her confidence.”

“My son has been going to the YMCA since he was 4. And
he still looks forward to going, it’s almost like his home
away from home. It’s a place where he can have structured
fun, and just be a kid. He has formed very good friendships
and has learned to work out problems and communicate his
feelings in a positive way.”

TOP 10 REASONS
YOU AND YOUR CAMPER LOVE
SUMMER CAMP AT THE YMCA!
The YMCA is one of the nation’s largest providers of out-of-school programming, and has a long, rich history
of over 100 years in providing top-notch summer camps to parents across the country. We, at your local YMCA,
strive to provide kids as young as 3 and through the teen years with a safe environment and a place to continue
learning, hone social skills and have some FUN for an overall outstanding summer camp experience.
6
1
At the YMCA we keep a 15:1 child to counselor ratio as we believe a smaller ratio
creates a more personal valuable experience in which to learn and grow.
(State of Florida mandates a 25:1 ratio.)
2
Safety is paramount at the Y. All camp counselors are
specifically trained to meet the needs of various age
levels and abilities, and are required to complete the
40-hour YMCA camp training course prior to instruction.
They also must pass a nationwide background and drug
screening and must hold current CPR and First Aid
certifications.
3
Our various camp programs offer opportunities for friendly competition through games,
sports, arts and knowledge all rooted in the YMCA core values of caring, honesty,
respect, responsibility.
4
For your convenience, we offer curbside drop off for campers at the back entrance
of the YMCA.
5
During drop off and pick up, you’ll be greeted by a friendly YMCA staff member who
manages our secure sign in/sign out process for each camper.
6
At the Y, we strive to promote Healthy Eating
and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in our
many childcare program areas. Each Y camper
will receive at least 1 to 2 hours of physical activity
each day and we strive to model healthy eating
behaviors ourselves.
7
Since we are constantly aiming to provide your kids
with new and exciting options, this year we are
thrilled to be incorporating our YBIKE program into
summer camp curriculum. This program will teach
campers bike safety, how to ride a bike and the
benefits one can gain from doing so.
8
Our YMCA features two indoor pools. Each Y camper
will enjoy at least an hour of swim time each day, 4
days per week. At the beginning of camp, each camper
is tested by YMCA lifeguards on swimming ability.
If determined to be a “red band” swimmer (needs
improvement in swimming) they will receive a half hour
of FREE swimming lessons once a week and have the
remainder of time spent in recreational swim.
9
Y camp curriculum features the opportunity for
enhanced learning activities when other guest
groups come in to offer fun and educational
learning experiences. Such groups have included:
Center for Creative Education, Kid Kritics,
Primetime, Palm Beach Zoo and Mad Scientist.
10
Constantly aiming for best-in-class programming,
we are pleased to have incorporated
professional educators as staff into our camp
curriculum who can focus on topics like history,
science, reading, math and art with our Y kids.
Our staff is here to help you and we welcome any suggestions you may have in order for us to better
serve you. If you have any questions on Summer Camp at the Y, please contact:
Keri DeBowes at 561.536.1418 or [email protected]
