Mayor Brad Pettitt concedes the store may close but says if it does, it’s not the end of the world. “Our offer is on the table,” he told the Herald. “If Myer choose, for their own reasons, to leave the CBD that store will not be left empty. Kings Square will still go ahead.” The mayor confirms the council has offered “modest” incentives for Myer to stay, during what he describes as robust negotiations expected to be finalised in the next few weeks. A Myer makeover has been promoted as a catalyst for the CBD’s $180 million redevelopment. “We’re happy to look at some financial incentives, but it is not up to council to prop up the retailer,” Dr Pettitt says, using significantly more robust language towards Myer than in the past. “They keep coming back with demands for more financial incentives.” He says people would expect the council to offer reasonable incentives for the department store to stay. It’s understood negotiations now rest on what is believed to be a few million dollars and a business model the retailer wants to adopt for the site. “They will go away and run it through their modelling,” Dr Pettitt says. • continued page 2 MP blasts youth ‘bums’ by BRENDAN FOSTER JOE FRANCIS has told the WA parliament that one in five youths across the southern suburbs is, “too busy sucking on bongs to get out of bed and get a job”. “Twenty per cent of young people in Rockingham, Kwinana and Cockburn wouldn’t pass a drug test,” the MP for the ultramarginal Liberal seat of Jandakot scoffed. “I cannot believe that taxpayers like the idea of their hard-earned money going to support bums who sit at home smoking pot without contributing to society.” He’d been attacking the Labor opposition during a debate about local unemployment. “Some people in public housing are genuinely in need of our help, and of course we should do the right thing and support them, but there are also people in public housing who are bums and potheads,” Mr Francis continued. • continued page 2 EXTRAS THERE’S just too much news to squeeze into this weeks’ Chook, so here’s a taster of the extra bits we’ve loaded onto our website. It’s sent out an initial draft of the new residential design guidelines for public comment. “We want to preserve the amenity of the town, while at the same time recognising the need for appropriate new infill developments and improvements to existing houses,” mayor Alan Ferris says. Consultant architects worked with council planners to ensure the town’s seven distinct precincts don’t lose their individual character. The submission period closes June 6, so get in quick. FREMANTLE Wind Farm is officially launched at the North Fremantle Bowling Club Saturday June 9 from 1-3.30pm. Head honcho Jamie Ally says it’ll be their first attempt to engage with the community, whose support they’re banking on to win over the doubters at Fremantle Ports. She told colleagues she’d been eyeing off a vacant lot opposite the hospital to create an outdoor respite for patients and visitors. However, in the past week plans for the site have progressed and she’s now looking for somewhere else. She was also taken by the idea of creating “kissing places” in the city. “If people express affection in a place, you know it’s working,” she said, adding she’d seen a young couple kissing in Market Street earlier that day. “It means that you’ve got somewhere people feel comfortable or that inspires a good feeling in them.” newsclips THE Dalai Lama’s Gyuto Monks obviously can’t get enough of Fremantle. Following their tour with the saffron saint last year, the monks are back to pass on some more secrets of tantric rituals, which include harmonic chanting and sand mandalas. The monks will be at the Fremantle Town Hall from June 18-30, with free daily workshops and a ticketed evening concert on Thursday June 28. Tix from www,heatseeker.com.au. We’ve got a couple of double passes to the documentary Pure Sound, a unique behindthe-scenes look into the lives of the Gyuto monks, narrated by Toni Collette. Tutor Tania Ferrier says the art is part of recovery but the participants’ previous time spent in the arts world means the pieces are of a high standard. • from page 1 “It is a small percentage of them, but there are some.” WA youth affairs chief Craig Comrie was gobsmacked by the outburst. “I think it’s very sad that a member of parliament is stereotyping young people,” he said. “I’d like to see where he got the statistics from. It’s such a complex issue and while some young people are using drugs, most would do anything to enter the workforce.” Shelter WA’s Chantal Roberts, whose group finds housing for low-income workers and people with disabilities, wants Mr Francis to prove his figures. “That’s a ridiculous and outrageous comment,” she angrily told the Herald. “About 60 per cent of people in public housing are employed or on a disability, so that leaves 40 per cent. So he’s saying half of them are on drugs?” Cockburn Labor MP Fran Logan describes Mr Francis’ comments as “a nasty and offensive condemnation of the disadvantaged and the battlers of Cockburn”. “I have never known a state member of parliament to publicly vilify his own constituents in such a vehement and offensive manner. “The most despicable thing about Francis’s comments is that they come from a bloke who has done nothing, absolutely nothing in his electorate to help the unemployed and disadvantaged.” Mr Francis told the Herald he’d received the 20 per cent figure from the WA drug and alcohol office. Dopey youth Myer no done deal • from page 1 Myer had told him it needs to turn over $25 million-plus a year to stay in Fremantle—a significant increase on its current $15m. Myer CEO Bernie Brookes last year said the department store was “committed” to its Fremantle location. Reporting the company’s $160m full year net profit, Mr Brookes said closing the store would have a “damning effect” on the CBD. “Our premise at the moment is to stay in Fremantle with a new store.” Last week, Myer issued a profit downgrade on the back of poor quarterly sales, sending shares plunging nearly eight per cent. Myer ’s lease expires next month. Benita Daniel BSc (Podiatry) BSc (Nursing) PARENTS at John Curtin College of the Arts have thrown their support behind their embattled principal after premier Colin Barnett ripped into him for criticising a lack of school funding in the Budget. Mitch Mackay had sent a letter to parents saying the school would not receive the $57 million he’d been promised by the department. He apologised for the school’s ageing infrastructure “despite a boom time economy”. Philip Rehill told the Herald the premier had unfairly targeted Mr Mackay for simply telling the truth. “All Mitch has done is inform the parents about the situation and I think the premier was out-of-hand,” he said. “I think he and many of the parents were disappointed the promised upgrades to the school were not going to happen. “But Emperor Colin has show his true colours.” The Herald spoke to four other similarly irate parents (who claimed to be too upset to be named). “Architects had been called in and I understand a masterplan was drawn up, so I would be pissed off too if it all fell over,” one told the Herald. “Does Mr Barnett just expect the principal to just accept it?” The Herald has been inundated with letters of support for Mr Mackay, who has since gone to ground. Fremantle independent MP Adele Carles has called on the WA government to split the $80 million it plans to spend on Willetton SHS between three schools identified by the education department as being in more urgent need of attention, including John Curtin. “In 2008, we saw $56 million promised to Applecross SHS to secure Janet Woollard’s support for the government and now we see $80m in promised funding for Willetton SHS to secure the super-marginal seat of Riverton for the Libs in 2013,” Ms Carles said. “Enough is enough.” BY OPENING THE DOOR TO US, YOU’RE HELPING US OPEN THE DOOR TO OTHERS. • • • • • • • 5 Shuffrey Street Fremantle T.9433 6538 Sorella Store ALFRED COVE VILLAGE • Willagee Labor MP Peter Tinley and Melville SHS council chief Paul Richards—upset with a lack of funding. School council head Paul Richards says it’s a “gross inequity” that the school received no allocation to help with the transition of hundreds of year sevens to the school in 2015. “There seems to be a gross inequity when Willetton gets $80 million and we get nothing,” Mr Richards grimly told the Herald. “We already have 980-odd students and a capacity of 1100, yet we are expecting an extra 220-250 year seven students in 2015. The lack of funding follows John Curtin College of the Arts— in non-Liberal Fremantle— missing out on a $57m upgrade the education department had said it needed. Instead, Willetton SHS in Liberal-held Riverton and Applecross SHS in Liberal independent-held Alfred Cove, scored $96m between them. Willagee MP Peter Tinley says the failure to fund schools like Melville means they can’t compete with cashedup neighbouring schools for enrolments. “The schools that missed out on critical funding fear they will need to restrict enrolments to local intake students only and deny access to their specialist programs,” he said. “Melville SHS competes with intake to schools such as Applecross, Rossmoyne, John Curtin and Willetton SHS. The Barnett government has failed the families of this community.” WA education minister Liz Constable did not reply to enquiries by deadline. Call 1300 633 161 Tired of being the last to get jokes? Democracy costs Denture Clinic EDITORIAL from media spokesperson Susan Oldham, “we don’t have anything further to add” or maybe he got an unaccountable response from Mr Barnett’s office, one of these “WA Government” emails that left him nowhere to go. I support Mr Mackay in standing up for his school and its children and expressing his views in a democratic society appropriately. It is a pity Mr Barnett has lost sight of a what a democracy is. All members of society have a right to speak out appropriately and if Mr Barnett cannot handle the criticism he has two choices: Provide adequate funding or resign. His call, but democracy will win out all the time. Oh by the way, I do support your response to Daryl Binning (Herald letters, May 26, 2012). Well done for publishing views you disagree with and for expressing your own opinions in response. A healthy discussion is a good one. Andrew Priest Fothergill St, Fremantle Editor’s note: Haha, thanks Andrew, we wondered if anyone was going to remind the premier that not everyone’s got a lazy $25,000—and certainly not a high school—to buy their way to a cosy dinner-table chat. Safety first THE sensible majority in the community should not be too worried about those who vehemently oppose wearing a helmet whilst cycling—for they don’t seem to have enough brains to protect with a helmet! They also don’t seem to realise the purpose of the current law is not just about protecting the individual rider’s health, but also reducing the cost to the health system, which is funded by the wider community should they come a cropper. Mr Pignatiello (Herald letters, May 26, 2012) asks “where’s the proof that a rock-hard piece of polystyrene on the top of your head will prevent irreversible brain damage?” Having hit the ground myself several times whilst cycling, I can say without doubt that I’m really glad I was wearing a helmet. Rather than seeking irrefutable proof, Mr Pignatiello only needs to look at the number of deaths and serious head injuries when victims of socalled “one-punch” incidents whack their head on the concrete, and ask if they’d be better off if they were wearing a helmet at the time? And finally, as if the above is not sufficient to kill the debate, I’d suggest that anyone who chooses not to go cycling because of the relatively minor expense and inconvenience incurred from wearing a helmet isn’t very keen on going for a ride in the first place. So, belt-up (in more ways than one) and get on your bike! Colin Delane Anscombe Loop, Leeming New Jews FOR some weeks there has been a growing outcry about the dreadful level of spending on our schools—a clear example of government austerity policies. At the same time there have been letters to the Herald campaigning to denigrate, in fact dehumanise, asylum seekers. The two issues are linked. The more the inhumanity of current social spending is felt the more the right-wing wants to deflect anger onto the least powerful—the refugees. The refugees are starting to play the role in this economic crisis that the Jews played in the last great crash, that of the scapegoats. Allseas contends that in waters excised from the Migration Zone in 2001, Australian labour law does not apply to vessels servicing the offshore oil and gas industry. On May 18 the Federal Court agreed. So under international law the resources belong to Australia but Australian labour law does not apply. Mining bosses’ heaven! The MUA is fighting this tooth and nail. If generalised it would wipe out the Australian seafarer. Howard’s anti-refugee hysteria, his “weapon of mass distraction” is being used to directly attack our seafarers’ existence. The federal Labor government must be made to tear up this poisonous legacy too. In 2010 the mining companies boasted about rolling Kevin Rudd and the Resource Super Profit Tax. The watered down Mineral and Petroleum Resource Rent Tax may generate even less revenue in a downturn . It’s all a far cry from Norway, whose state-owned oil company takes a 50 per cent stake in every project and then imposes a 90 per cent tax on the profits of the private partner, or of Venezuela and Bolivia that just nationalised their oil and gas industries outright. Thanks to Barnett’s cutbacks the Disability Services Commission is planning to abolish the positions of 34 community social trainers who help adults with disabilities perform daily tasks. Many are already missing out on this so-called boom, and we’re going backwards. It really is time to share the wealth—OUR wealth, not Gina’s. The premier blurted out that communicating this simple truth to the people involved is “politically charged”. He made not even a token effort attempt to address the actual issue, and failed to understand the very obvious fact that it was he himself who had introduced politics into an educational matter. For almost two years the college has been consulting with the department, which in turn had identified John Curtin as top of the list of schools flagged for refurbishment and new buildings. Its classrooms have never been significantly upgraded since the 1940s and there has been just one new building in 60 years. Among many other anomalies, gifted music students have only an old temporary demountable in which to rehearse. It was agreed this is unacceptable for a flagship independent public school teaching gifted and talented students in the arts. Given the department’s full support, and in close consultation with them, the council spent months drawing up plans to meet the modern needs of the college. All this preparation and orderly planning became a complete waste of everybody’s time and money when the premier, with a flourish of his pen, refused to address the college’s needs and plans, and instead diverted an even larger amount of money towards a school further down on the priority list of letters Get off your “picture opportunity” bike, Mr Mayor (Herald, May 12, 2012). Concentrate on the complaints about your unbelievable call for high-rise, your lack of sensitivity toward the heritage of historic Fremantle, and your city’s impossible parking problems. No wonder you ride a bike, no sane person drives to Freo. Suzanne John Fremantle “neediness” but in a politically marginal electorate. The signals given to our community and to our extremely bright, future leaders at school, are that politics is a cynical and unprincipled matter of buying votes to get power for your own party. Not good role-modelling from a premier, to my mind. These days everybody, and particularly school administrators, are required to make decisions that are transparent and fair, and to be accountable in justifying decisions clearly and logically. Is it too much to ask that a state premier be required to do so as well? I am sure the principal, who is a highly respected, inspirational, and much loved educational leader, deserves a full apology for the unjustifiable abuse levelled at him, with all the distress this has caused to parents and students. In addition, in order to address the issue correctly, to rectify the manifest injustice, and with proper regard to procedures, the necessary funding agreed with the department should now be implemented as a supplement to the Budget. Bob White Hampton Rd, Fremantle Untold stories OH, who needs to get over it (Herald letters, May 26, 2012)? Those whose families were interned or those who envy their success, insinuating that their motive has something to do with valuable land? Many who were interned rose to success contributing to the community of our city against many obstacles; one was racial discrimination. Unfortunately there are some who still behave in that way. Some who were interned had sons fighting in the Australian Army. I would say there was no danger of them working for the enemy. Most were simple peasants or fishermen who were sent off to the bush to cut down trees or to work in unfamiliar places, including my father and his brother. My uncle, a fisherman who was forced to work on a wheat silo in North Fremantle, fell to his death when he lost balance walking on a narrow plank, leaving behind a wife and two babies to fend for themselves. I would not say to them “get over it”. There are many untold stories that are part of our history and history needs to be told even to those who do not want to hear it. Would you say get over it to someone who lost a loved one in WWII, or to those children who were sent out from the UK and badly treated? I say to you JM’Laughlin, you GET OVER IT! Page 6 – Fremantle Herald, Saturday June 2, 2012 by STEVE GRANT FREMANTLE city council has been forced into an expensive backdown after it tried to pay some staff less than others, based on where they worked. The council had earlier won FairWork Australia endorsement to employ CCTV operators and staff at the arts and leisure centres on lower wages than staff working in Kings Square. That was overturned on appeal and the council forced into mediation with the Australian Services Union which has led to the signing of an MOU. Socialist councillor Sam Wainwright says the stoush—and expensive legal fees—could have been avoided if the council had backed a bid by himself and Labor councillor Josh Wilson to end the staff discrimination early on. He and Cr Wilson had proposed an amendment to the council’s “employment values” policy cementing pay parity and giving management no choice but to abide by the policy. The council adopted the policy but voted down the pay parity amendment. Cr Wainwright says the signing of the MOU has unshackled councillors from having to remain silent and he’s come out blasting, saying council management has wasted money with its stubbornness. “The March interim budget review revealed that the city has spent $108,000 defending the case,” he told the Herald. “I wish council had just supported our original amendment. This would still have cost money in wages and conditions, but better it go to the pockets of people who live and work in Fremantle than help some lawyer in Toorak buy another BMW.” Cr Wilson says he’s unaware of the details of the MOU but is happy progress had been made. “Anything that supports equality is something I support,” he told the Herald. “I just wish it had happened earlier.” Cr Wilson revealed there had been significant management opposition to getting the employment policy up, saying he and Cr Wainwright were regularly warned off from delving into operational matters. Woollard should quit: Labor by BRAD JEFFERIES JANET WOOLLARD should resign from parliament says shadow attorney-general John Quigley. His extraordinary call follows the independent MP’s letter to 15,000 households throughout her Alfred Cove electorate, which detailed her opinion of a court case in which her adult son Luke was ordered by the WA district court to pay boatcrash victim Kate Campbell $230,000 in damages. He’d crashed the uninsured boat, owned by his prominent cardiologist father, while drunk. In the letter, Dr Woollard criticised Ms Campbell—who was badly injured in the crash—for pursuing the case and for rejecting her family’s offer of a $100,000 payout. It has transpired since the case ended that Luke Woollard intends to declare bankruptcy, saying he has no means to pay. Dr Woollard and her husband say they won’t lend their son the money. In the letter Dr Woollard claimed the court action was part of a strategy by Ms Campbell to target her family, an accusation Ms Campbell’s lawyer John Hammond describes as outrageous. “Janet Woollard’s letter seriously undermines the importance of the decision of the District Court and unfairly challenges the bona fides of Kate Campbell,” he said. “Janet Woollard seeks to dilute the decision of the District Court.” “[She] states that her family wants closure: Why on earth would you write to 20,000 voters, be interviewed for prime time TV and the printed media alleging Kate Campbell is engaged in a strategy of targeting her family if closure is the desired outcome?” Mr Quigley says Ms Woollard’s decision fails to provide a fair picture because her letter simply ignores the court’s decision. “Not only should she resign, she should write to everyone and retract her statement and offer her sincerest apologies to Ms Campbell.” In her letter, Ms Woollard claims the Ms Campbell “recovered well”. However, in his decision in the February 2012 civil procedings, Judge Philip McCann said Ms Campell “has suffered and will continue to suffer harm in a number of respects”. When told of Mr Quigley’s comments Dr Woollard said, “that’s politics”. She stands by her decision to write and release the letter, which she’d paid for herself, saying she’d been getting calls about the case and it was proving distracting and time-consuming. “Many people from my electorate contacted me over the issue of the accident...it’s been taking up a fair bit of my time,” she said. “I’ve had a positive response from people who said they now have an understanding.” Ms Campbell says she’s still recovering from her injuries. • To view Judge McCann’s decision, see http://decisions.justice.wa.gov.au/district/disdcsn. nsf — click on WADC then 2012 then 000-049 WHAT’S NEW Brighter down lights that cost less to run! The Port Botany plant is owned by Orica, one of three companies planning to build an explosives factory near internationally significant Aboriginal rock art on the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha. Former Fremantle council arts chief June Moorhouse has thrown her hat in with the Friends of Australian Rock Art in trying to protect the Burrup, saying the petroglyphs are too precious to risk having neighbours like Orica. The company had another plant shut down by the NSW government last year after three leaks of ammonia in three months, one of which led to workers at a nearby business being hospitalised. Apache Energy, the subject of a damning safety report into the Varanus Island explosion released to the WA parliament by mines minister Norman Moore last week, also has a 10 per cent stake in the explosives factory. “So, despite the insistence of [major partner] Yara that they are the most environmentally and safety conscious company imaginable, they get into bed with some real cowboys,” Ms Moorhouse told the Herald. Yara International vicepresident of corporate communications Esben Tuman says the rock art is safe: “The TAN (technical ammonium nitrate) plant will be built and operated by Yara, and all the specifications for the construction is according to our high standards,” he says. “When we have the responsibility, we do not compromise on this.” Ms Moorhouse is organising a FARA tour of the Burrup in August to try to recruit supporters. There are 38 seats on the tour bus and it’ll cost $1950 per person. There are another 20 spots for independent travelers who’ll pay $250 per day. For more information and bookings, contact June Moorhouse on 0418 920 435 or visit www.rockart.net.au. • The Burrup’s a long way from Freo but it’s close to many locals’ hearts, as this year’s May Day march demonstrates. I N 2001 there was international outrage when Taliban zealots dynamited two giant sixth century Buddha statues in Afghanistan. Yet here in our own backyard the continued destruction of Aboriginal rock art on the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha is a desecration of probably greater international significance and it raises barely a ripple. Why? Essentially because we “whiteys” have not reconciled to the fact that Aboriginal history is also our own; that the Yaburara who started scratching images onto the hot, jagged rocks of the Burrup 30,000 years ago are also our ancestors. If we had, we’d probably divert some of the energy we pour into fighting over cottages or limestone walls in Fremantle that haven’t even notched up their 200th year, into fighting for the Burrup. Our shared history would be celebrated in schools, we’d jump up and down about successive governments blinded by mining royalties and beg the outside world to help us save the Burrup. About 20 years ago I interviewed Dr Jim Rhoads who’d led a team of archaeologists to record and salvage artifacts on the peninsula before they were destroyed to make way for Woodside’s LNG plant. “There’s Lascaux in France, Altamira in Spain, and the Burrup Peninsula,” he told me. That’s esteemed company. Lascaux is known as the “Sistine Chapel of pre-history” and attracts 300,000 visitors a year. They can’t even view the original paintings, which are considered so priceless the caves have been closed for fear COMMENT C STEVE GRANT S that human breath might damage them. The public makes do with replicated chambers in a nearby visitors centre. Compare that to the Burrup, where people drive in with trailers and waltz out with a piece of rock art; where they’re about to build an explosives factory. I asked Dr Rhoads how his team had felt about its salvage task on the Burrup: “We cried.” I’ve also felt like crying. I’ll never forget sitting in one of the gullies that criss-cross the Burrup, its walls covered with images of turtles, wallabies, fish and strange figures with head dresses that could have been spirits. There, a godless black sheep of my family, I understood spirituality. I felt the presence of the Yaburara around me; I could sense their lives, their laughter, their simple daily tasks. And there was an overwhelming, oppressive sadness. For the Yaburara are no more. The few not killed in the Flying Foam Massacres of 1868 were finished off by introduced disease. They can no longer plead their case. And this is also what makes the art so important to protect. The oldest carvings have been dated to around 30,000 years ago, but the last known one is clearly post-contact. It shows a tall figure riding a horse and carrying a gun. So while Lascaux has a snapshot of a very short period in history, the Burrup documents 30,000 years of a culture. That’s unique in the world. And they want to build a dynamite factory there. WHAT’S NEW by TYNE LOGAN LIVING greenery is soon to cover the walls of Fremantle with the Green Skins project by Curtin University’s Sustainability Policy Institute well on its way. The biophilia is designed to reduce what is known as “urban heat island effect”, caused, says CUSP researcher Jana Soderlund, “by a lack of biodiversity in an area, causing buildings to absorb the heat and emit radiation into the surrounds, ultimately increasing the temperature”. Ideas to come out of the project include garden beds, plants growing out of walls and rooftop gardens that will create a “natural air conditioner”. The project has been run past the WA heritage council. CUSP will target mainly privately owned non-heritage buildings, with Westgate mall and CUSP’s West End building likely trial sites. Green-thumbed residents can help plant the trial sites and get involved by emailing Ms Soderlund on [email protected] Mayor Brad Pettitt says the green walls can end up being “artworks in their own right” and attract tourists, as well as address sustainability issues. The Documentary Australia Foundation approved the film spin-off to the acclaimed 14-minute short ‘Restare Uniti’ (Stick Together). “By supporting our project through DAF our financial contributors will receive some very attractive tax benefits,” actor Frank Fazio told friends on Facebook. Fazio plays 18-year-old Gianni, who lives with his mother in Harvey before being taken to join other internees, rounded up following Italy’s entry into WWII as an ally of Germany. Producers Daniel Tenni and Julius Telmer hope a full-length feature film will emerge from the documentary and short film, which was shot in Harvey where the Australian government built one of many camps. Tenni’s great-grandfather Carlo was interned at Harvey and is one of the young men taken with Gianni in the back of the military truck at the end of the independent short film. The team has spent two years screening the film around Australia. The Melbourne premiere in April sold out to a star-studded cast including Underbelly star Vince Colosimo and producer Robert Lewis Galinsky. The foundation does not make or commission films, but manages and receives grants from the public, which are then passed on to filmmakers. The documentary film has a budget of $750,000. Those interested in supporting the project can contact Daniel Tenni at Tino Films Pty Ltd on [email protected]. au. The fully-renovated home is modern on the inside; sharp lighting, sharp lines, sharp lines, and tasteful colours and feature walls keeps it exciting, but is balances the line between luxury and livability well. A two-bedroom unit is attached to the house, and it’s got its own front door as well as access to an outdoor courtyard. It’s completely selfsufficient, with a kitchen and a full bathroom with toilet and plenty of extra space for lounging. The unit is not an afterthought; both bedrooms are large and have built-in robes. You could lease it for a bit of extra cash, section off troublemaking teens or your 20-something kids who (so they’ll claim) can’t find a place to rent. It’s also perfect for elderly family members who need an eye looking out for them. Speaking of the elderly, the downstairs games room reminded me of a cruise ship ballroom—in the best way possible. There are grand marble pillars, shiny timber Options aplenty floors, fancy downlighting and blue ceiling-mounted LED rope lights, a large bar—and, best of all—enough space to fit both a table tennis and pool tables. As well as the family room upstairs, which opens on to a long, sunny balcony, there’s another living room through sealed off bifold doors that’s suitable as a teenage retreat (if they’re not already detained in the unit downstairs) or as a theatre room. The main bedroom boasts tasteful feature walls, balcony access, ensuite bathroom and a spacious walk-in robe. All remaining bedrooms are large, sunny and well lit with built-in robes. The kitchen is impressive. Top-of-the-line appliances include a self-cleaning oven and a microwave which can convert to a grill. Adjacent is a long alfresco dining area, although I use “alfresco” with some hesitancy because it can be sealed on either side by glass doors. In the backyard, there’s not a blade of grass—real or fake—in sight. Rather, the vendors opted for 231 South Terrace, South Fremantle www.propertygallery.com.au a native garden bordering large brick courtyards, great for a kid who’s in to basketball or tennis, as well as outdoor dining. The front yard is a mulched native garden; a more sensible option than a patch of turf if you want to save water. Plus, if you want grass to run around and kick the footy on, Winthrop primary school’s oval is just across the street. It’s also just a short walk or ride down the hill to the shops and restaurants at Winthrop Village. 5 Edmiston Way Winthrop $1.575m Eric Hartanto 0421 272 152 Harcourts Applecross 9364 2788 9430 9430 UNDER OFFER HAMILTON HILL $555,000 UNDER OFFER ANOTHER WANTED French door lead out to magnificent gardens, 3 bedroom 1 bathroom with shower and toilet in large double brick shed/cottage studio. The house that he built T HERE’S a WA developer who goes on TV claiming he “stands behind every home he builds” but the builder of 10 Potter Court in Spearwood has him beat: He’s been living in the place he built for almost 30 years. With five bedrooms, two bathrooms and enough space out back to hold a queen’s royal barbecue, he’s decided it’s time to downsize given the kids have moved out. The space is a big drawcard for a couple planning to breed up big, and there’s a school just up the road. Along with a heap of bedrooms and two bathrooms there’s a huge openplan dining/living room that connects to the kitchen, and you can open the back doors to the yard for house parties. The block is just shy of 800sqm and there’s been a generous amount of space left out back for kicking a footy or reenacting the Battle of Hastings. Personally I’d pull up the astroturf and install some AT HOME DAVID BELL real greenery as I’ve always viewed fake grass as about as fun as a pet rock. However, less active greenthumbs might appreciate not having to mow, edge, water, weed, fertilise, and crop rotate or whatever else you have to do to keep grass alive. The builder has also installed ready-to-go plumbing, electricity and gas outlets on the back porch, so anyone keen on setting up your own outdoor bar back here only has to plug in the fridge and connect up the taps. It’d make a great entertainer’s area. There’s a lot of space for cars if you’re one of those families with grown-up kids and you routinely have a convoy of Kombis and other vehicles littering your lawn. Here there are two garage spaces, and room for at least three more cars out back and two more in the driveway. Fremantle Market on the Bottom By HAYDEN GROVES Chairman REIWA Fremantle Branch P roperty values in and around Fremantle have been flat for the past five years according to the latest numbers from the Real Estate Institute of WA. Fremantle’s suburban areas’ (including East Fremantle) median house price has fallen a collective 13.3 per cent over the past twelve months. Of all other central suburban areas, representing 45 per cent of Perth’s metropolitan population, the sub-region of Fremantle lost the most ground by some margin. Nearby City of Melville’s median house price dropped 3.5 per cent over the year and Cockburn fell 3.6 per cent. The affluent Western suburbs, anecdotally the hardest hit by property downturns, fell a surprisingly moderate 7.9 per cent. The numbers also tell us that, in theory, if you purchased a home in the City of Fremantle All things considered, the Fremantle region seems poised for a recovery in property values. in March 2007, the value of your home is the same today as it was the day you moved in. Fremantle’s sub region does appear to be somewhat of an anomaly comparative to the metro area as median prices appears to be stabilising as buyer activity increases. More first home buyers are purchasing which is beginning to loosen up trade-up buying activity, although this is yet to significantly materialise in the Fremantle property market. Trade-up buyers make up 66 per cent of all WA home buyers, 27 per cent are first time buyers and a conspicuously almost absent 7 per cent are investors. Thankfully, there were 1100 more houses sold in the latest quarter than in the last three months of last year, a rise of near 13 per cent. A further positive is that “for sale” levels are dropping down 16.6 per cent on this time last year, although comparatively, inner metropolitan Perth’s listing base has fallen 27.6 per cent over the same duration. Fewer sellers are discounting in order to sell too with 56 per cent of Fremantle’s vendors dropping an average of 4.2 per cent on price in order to meet market expectations. Last year, 76 per cent of local vendors despairingly dropped 9 per cent off their asking prices to find a buyer. The rental market has faired better (if you’re a landlord) with Fremantle’s sub regions’ median rent rising 11 per cent over the past twelve months now at $500 per week. Whopping quarterly gains in North Fremantle (53 per cent to $750 per week) and East Fremantle (19 per cent to $500 per week) helped fuel local gains. All things considered, the Fremantle region seems poised for a recovery in property values. Rents continue to rise, albeit more modestly now due to seasonal conditions, borrowing costs are low, stock levels are falling and sales volumes are increasing. A pleasant, steady-asshe-goes market is beginning to emerge. Page 18 – Fremantle Herald, Saturday June 2, 2012 And, of course, the owner has put up a mancave out back with power running to the shed. While you have an option to open up a rear entrance, for now the builder’s decided to orient this one towards the quiet, peaceful cul de sac so the kids can go out front and play and not have to worry about maniacs in DeLoreans gunning past at 88mph. Overall, the place really feels like a solid family joint. 10 Potter Court, Spearwood $580,000 Sara Finlayson 0427 987 280 Acton Fremantle 9319 3022 Home open Sunday June 3, 1.30pm to 2pm. Each morning its edifices cast a cold shadow over transit passengers as they board trains and ride into welcome sunlight. Cockburn Central has long been desperate for spice and it’s finally found it with the opening of its first restaurant, Majestic Indian. You’ll find Aussie Favourites on the menu: Butter chicken ($18.50), lamb rogan josh ($19.50) and beef vindaloo ($19.50) are all there. We decided to order against type and choose something unfamiliar, the Majestic’s signature dish, Afghani Raan ($20.50). The pleasant waitress informed us the boneless meat wasn’t drenched in the usual amount of “gravy” and some might find it dry. It wasn’t. Its scarce malt vinegar FFOOD MATTHEW EELES M marinade was enough to coat the incredibly tender charcoal tandoor lamb. You could tell why it was the chef’s signature dish. Full of flavour and ever so moreish. For vegetarians the choices are ample and range from medium to mild. We picked the navratan korma ($16.50) and after the first bite wished we’d settled on something else. The nutty flavour was there but what appeared to be defrosted packet vegetables still carried water: With every bite the punch of flavour was washed away. We used our perfectly cooked garlic naan ($4.50 for two slices) to mop up the sauce but left the vegetables, as they’d long seen better days. So visiting the Beaufort Street Merchant for a slap-up Sunday lunch seemed an entirely natural thing to do. It has a mix of breakfast dishes (chorizo omelette, backed ricotta), salads (chickpea) and brassiere-style mains (pork cotoletta, pedro shank, catalan fish). In addition to mains, there’s a couple of platters to share and enigmatic-sounding mushrooms stuffed with pearl barley ($24). I ordered the coq au vin pie ($29.50) and seasonal greens ($9.50), while ‘er indoors went for the merchant burger ($23). The coq au vin presentation was quirky: a chicken thigh bone, wrapped in crispy bacon, can be found in the starter: Served with mango and lime condiments straight from a jar but worthy accompaniments nonetheless to complementary papadams. I can’t remember the last time I was served something free anywhere in Perth. They added an extra crunch to already crisp onion bhazi ($12): Bits of onion coated in chickpea flour, seasoned with carom seed then deep-fried. Little bites of pungent delight and with six on the plate it was a filling kick off to a satisfying, substantial meal. This place is sure to grow with popularity as surrounding apartments begin to fill with trendy suburbanites and nuclear families, and with a small bar planned for next door Majestic Indian will no doubt become a favourite with the late-night crowd of tipsy revellers. We both tucked into refulgent greens laced with butter: a tasty stack of asparagus and broccoli. The Beaufort Street Merchant 488-492 Beaufort St, Mt Lawley | 9328 6299 protruded from the top. The pie was surrounded by a moat of sweet potato mash and red wine jus: Ingenious presentation which caused ‘er indoors to intermittently peer over her napkin. The mash was addictive, especially when combined with the slow-cooked chook and mushroom on the tip of my fork. The good lady’s burger arrived on a wooden board with a bowl of hand-cut chips and aioli—a rustic triumvirate. *Limit of 1 per customer per day. Photo supplied. Slightly vibrating S POOKMEISTER Bill Brennan-Jones says the wacky choral group The Spooky Men of the West has just one rule when it comes to joining the troupe: No jazz hands. “The requirement is twofold,” he told the Herald. “You have to have the right look and feel. “There were these auditions in the eastern states, where one guy who was a chef, turned up in a bandana, t-shirt and kilt. “He just walked in and they said ‘right, you are in the group’. “If there is too much jazz hands we are not keen on that.” The Spookys are a 17-piece all-male a cappella group that “present a unique vocal brand of pointless grandeur, magnificent manhomerie and poignant pathos”. The choir can belt out a 2000-year-old chant or harmonise to songs by ABBA. The troubadours will showcase their evocative sound and irreverent waggishness at Kulcha (above the Dome in South Terrace) on June 15. Brennan-Jones says that despite the strange understated deadpan humour, the group is steeped in the Georgian tradition of song. “The Georgian vocal style is one where you don’t have one part that holds the tune and the rest do backing,” he said. “If one of the parts sung one line by themselves it wouldn’t ARTS BRENDAN FOSTER make a lot of sense, you have to put it together to makes sense. “Hence, that’s the difficulty in arranging songs.” Spooky ages range from early 20s to late 60s and the members are an eclectic mix of teachers, business folk, IT consultants and musicians. And while Brennan-Jones admits there is a bit of “getting in touch with the inner bloke” while singing, the troupe doesn’t shy from lampooning themselves. “We have one song called Don’t Stand Between a Man and His Tool which can be taken many ways,” he laughs. “We have this prairie theory: Many years ago man was running around covered in pig fat chasing after a mastadon with a spear. “And now that has all changed and all they have is a backyard shed and instead of chasing a mastadon, they are putting together an Ikea flat pack. “The only constant is they still cover themselves in pig fat.” He says the odd cover can leave audience-goers slightly perplexed. “We do a Kasey Chambers song, I’m not pretty enough,” he said. “Which when you have a bunch of 20-60-year-olds standing there saying I’m not pretty enough, it has a very different context.” As for the group’s name? “Stephen Taberner, who started the group in the Blue Mountains 10 years ago was listening to these Georgian choirs and wanted to describe the sound,” Brennan-Jones says. “He said it sounded spooky— like if you had all the lights off you could feel the furniture slightly vibrating.” The Spookys are a 17-piece all-male a cappella group that ‘present a unique vocal brand of pointless grandeur, magnificent manhomerie and poignant pathos’.
