Human rights expert Paula Gerber, a professor at Monash University, told the Herald this week it was clear the ithholding of nancial entitlements from parents who refuse to inoculate their children breaches numerous articles of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child. She stresses she supports vaccination and jabbed her own kids, but says children should not be used as a “weapon” to force parents to toe the line and Australia should abide by treaties it signs. The convention states children must not be punished for the beliefs or actions of their parents, and that governments should go out of their way to ensure children fully bene t from social security. It says children should have a say in any administrative decisions that affect them and all decisions should be in their best interests. “It’s the same argument as when you are prohibiting children from going to school or daycare,” Prof Gerber says, referring to a similar hard-line vaccination policy from the Victorian government that came into effect on e ear s ay. ou are unishing and discriminating against the child.” Prof Gerber says the debate is so divisive that an article she wrote on Victoria’s school ban was rejected by four mainstream media outlets before being picked up by webzine Crikey. unnily enough, another news service that picked it up and called me was Al Jazeera in Qatar, which was because when the policy was introduced, we were the only country in the world to have adopted this type of measure”. Prof Gerber says national children’s commissioner Megan Mitchell should be helping to “get the message out” about the breach, but when the Herald contacted the Human Rights Commission, no-one was biting: “The children’s commissioner is not We have rented 8 homes this week! e er you re in ing o uying, e ing or ren ing, e oo or r o e ing you i o your re e e nee in 20 e ACCORDING to the experts consumer confidence is rising. The council scored a $50,000 grant to ght bush res from the federal government this ee , and emergency management co ordinator Michael mery con rmed to the Herald controlled burns are to be considered. Cockburn previously rejected the measure as unnecessary because of the extensive network of re brea s and limestone paths in its nature reserves, and its eed control rogram. Mr mery says the money ill also go to ards ma ing fuel loads. “This data is valuable in assessing the build-up of dead vegetation to ensure that actions are prioritised correctly,” he says. Mr mery says the council will take weather conditions into account if undergoing burns, and follow up with weed spraying. “Parts of the funds will be used to establish ne rebrea s in some conservation reserves. This is to ensure areas of bush are segregated, minimising the s read of bush res and im roving access for re cre s.” Mr mery says the council will also spend $20,000 educating people living in the city s re rone districts. But they still want commuters with dash cams who drove past the corner of Stock Road and Leach Highway at peak hour on the morning of Tuesday January 5 to come forward. That’s when they believe one or more burglars walked through the open front door of the house and bludgeoned Ms Fermendjin to death with one of her own possessions, which they’ve retrieved but haven’t identi ed. The victim had just picked up a basket of washing from a client of her home ironing business and police believe she disturbed the burglary. Her body was found by her daughter, who lives in a house at the back of the block, two days later. A neighbour said the daughter had entered the house with two young children, emerging distraught moments later. The daughter was again overcome with emotion at a police media event. Ms Fermendjin’s son-in-law, Ivan, described her as a “beautiful lady” who’d lived for her family. He backed police calls for people to come forward with any information, even if it seemed a long-shot. Police say even if motorists have erased footage from their dash cams, Reg... COLIN NICHOL (“Freohagen?” Herald Thinking Allowed, January 9, 2016) criticises Fremantle council’s decision to try to emulate Copenhagen as the best city for cyclists. beg to differ fundamentally, because generous spending to encourage cycling is just about the best decision any city can make. Let’s leave aside the economic fact (not opinion) that bike infrastructure more than pays for itself in better health and lower carbon emissions. It’s nonsense to argue that Copenhagen’s “landscape is more suited” erth isn t hilly and its climate is bike paradise by comparison. Sure, I agree we need to design our city our way, rather than just copy Copenhagen. One important example is our hot climate demands many more shade trees on streets and public spaces. But we are spot on to copy Copenhagen’s political climate. Like most cities, post-1945 Copenhagen rushed to accommodate cars — until about the mid-1960s when the crucial decision was made to stop smashing down buildings for more car space and instead create a city friendly to walking-cycling-public transport. Fremantle has recently started down this same path, making steady improvements for cyclists every year. Stay “on yer bike” Freo council (maybe even speed up!). You are delivering citizens a wonderful bargain with every dollar spent on encouraging more and safer cycling. Rob Delves Gibson St, Beaconsfield Show some respect, beaches I WOULD like to start by congratulating the City of Cockburn’s parks and environmental staff for the monumental clean u effort they undertook at the parkland area at CY O’Connor Beach following what must have been a massive NYE party at said location. R REGISTE re n e er re n e er When my husband and I took our dog for a walk there new year’s morning it was extremely confronting to see the massive pile of bottles and cans piled up near the bins; the rubbish littering MC Taggart Drive; the hundreds and thousands of cigarette butts on the grass and the overflo ing bins hich are not in short supply). This, along with the sight of many of the party goers collapsed on the grass or beach or still drinking. And the presence of two or three police vehicles. I conduct regular beach cleanups at CY O’Connor and rubbish is often an issue around the BBQ area - in fact since the huge council cleanup, conducted over days, visitors have already failed to notice the many bins and instead left their plastic picnic stuff and other rubbish around the tables rather than putting it in the very conveniently placed bins only metres away. For some people it is clearly way too much of an effort to clean u after themselves. What I don’t understand is why the council don’t make life easier for itself and more pleasant for respectful beach goers by utilising the pop-up bollards at the entrance to the carpark. How about closing the area to vehicles during certain hours, as it does with Manning Park — summer and winter hours. One council worker told me they are always cleaning up after travellers who illegally camp at night and whilst there clean out their vehicles, change the oil etc and leave it all in behind in the carpark afterwards. This disrespect for our public spaces is very disheartening. It would be great to see a strong, proactive stance from those in authority. And by the way, why wasn’t the party closed the night before by the police? And very sorry to read of the young man bashed (Herald, January 9, 2016) and his valuable hearing aids and travel photos taken at the same event. Alison Dorn Chesham Way, Hamilton Hill Enjoy Australia DEAR Greg, we read with dismay the article in last Saturday’s Herald (January 9, 2016) about your dreadful experience on New Year’s Eve. Lorraine Frost Attfield St, South Fremantle Public praise ON the last day of my son’s secondary education. I was prompted to write to the Herald to sing the praises of public education. For whatever reason, the letter was not published. In light of the success of John Curtin College of the Arts in the league tables, I thought I would try again. At John Curtin my son received an excellent, inclusive and modern education. I remain forever grateful to an e ce tional teaching staff and to a program that balanced the arts with academic rigour. Just as importantly he loved his JC experience. Oh, and one more thing. It is free. (nearly). However on the map which accom anies rans ort s proposals there is also an arrow pointing to this area of the beach ith the note, m each access for vessels”. bit ambiguous don t you think? Perhaps this ambiguity is the cause of some of the scaremongering and conflicting information being handed out by the people supporting the Save Freo Beaches group. They have a worthy cause, though their tactics are actually putting thin ing eo le off signing their petition. This channel, or corridor, for boats is supported by club commodore Terry Baker in his letter to the Herald of December 12, 2015. However, anyone who knows anything about boating and our prevailing winds would know that from a seamanship point of view this is the wrong place to put a boating channel for beach access by boats. n sea bree e conditions, which occur most afternoons during the summer, this is what sailors call a lee shore”. You only have to go down to the beach any afternoon when the sea bree e is blo ing to see the build up of waves in that corner of the beach, and along the club breakwater. Boats coming into the beach along this proposed corridor will be perilously close to the rocks, and getting pushed towards them, before arriving at the beach where the waves are biggest and most confused. Once boats arrive at the beach what are they going to tie up to? They will lie on the edge of the surf getting pounded by waves, and it ill be e tremely di cult to get off again. Basic seamanship that anyone who is in charge of a boat should know, would dictate that they come ashore on the sheltered, downwind side of a groyne or breakwater, not the windward side. Commodore Terry Baker says of the proposed corridor, the boating community can land safely in its dinghies to allow small children to swim in the relative safety of the beach, exercise their dogs or to enjoy and support local cafes”. his is de nitely not the safest part of the beach to land on, and is further from the local cafes than almost anywhere else on the beach. The cafes, public barbecues and toilets are all adjacent to the non-dog part of the beach, further south. The appropriate place for boats to come ashore would be ithin the club s enclosed and safe marina, when they can tie u to a doc and use the club s facilities. Surely the reason the club is supporting this proposal is that it is the thin end of the wedge for it to apply for the launching ramp that has previously been re ected. hat fe eo le realise is that land currently used as the carpark for the dog beach, is actually Fremantle Sailing Club land. If this boating corridor, be it m or m ide, is permitted it will give the club a good reason to re-apply for its launching ramp, and this ramp will have the same lee shore problems as the beach and the breakwater, which will make it dangerous for launching and retrieving boats. He says the group has chosen the same boundary as what was proposed under the failed council mergers process, effectively a line heading east from South ‘No transparency’ “There’s no transparency, because putting the rubbish and CoSafe levy into the rates notice, you don’t know what is happening,” Mr Wilson told the Herald. “I would rather see my rate money go to Fremantle than Cockburn Central, which I never use,” Mr Beazley says. All have a dim view of the money spent on security patrols. Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett says his council will formally oppose the secession bid. “Our local community associations in Hamilton Hill and North Coogee have previously indicated that they are opposed to Adin Lang’s proposal, as is the City of Cockburn,” he says. “Cockburn is a well-established and nancially stable council that offers an amazing range of services to its community. Mr Lang believes the switch will see rates drop and residents win entitlements to free parking in the CBD. But that ould be offset by losing ti asses, he concedes. North Coogee’s Alan Beazley, Paul Wilson and Brett Savage say Cockburn’s botched rates increase last year — which resulted in an embarrassing backdown and $1.36 million in refunds — played a part in their decision to join the campaign. Andrew Crellin, owner of Sterling & Currency, was approached by a Geraldton collector to sell 23 coins, recovered from the wreck site of the Dutch trader. Mr Crellin says he’s only ever handled one coin from the Zuytdorp previously, so having almost a third of all known coins in private hands makes the sale big news in the world of coin collecting. The Zuytdorp departed the Netherlands in 1711 en route to Batavia (now Indonesia) to purchase goods, such as spices, and take them back to Europe. o ever, li e several of its fleet mates - most infamously the Batavia - it ran aground and san off the coastline. It is unknown what became of those who survived the wreckage, as it predated regular European contact with Australia, but there have been rumours. “It is thought that some of the survivors may have settled and lived with Aborigines,” Mr Crellin told the Herald. The coins, which include unique stuivers and Mexican currency, were purchased by the collector from Russell are some believed to have been newly minted for two ships departing the Netherlands at that time: the Zuytdorp and the Belvliet. Unlike the Zuytdorp, the Belvliet’s journey to Batavia was a success, however no such coins ever surfaced. Mr Crellin believes that shows the Belvliet didn’t end up with any of the coins, making the Zuytdorp discovery unique. It will take at least four months for the unit to be built off site and no installation date has been set. Mayor Brad Pettitt says the station is a nod to the future. “Listen, some people Whale S tardu s t of a time Advertise in your Herald for as little as $104 will criticise that we have decided to spend the money on this, but we’ve got to take a holistic approach to the city and look at not just infrastructure and roads, but also sustainability and tourism.” “This will put us on the electric highway and hopefully attract even more people to the city.” Fremantle already has electric charging stations at Queensgate car park, but the new station will be next-generation and located in a more accessible and convenient location for most drivers. HILTON’S Patricia Flannery is a lifelong David Bowie fan who saw the artist perform umpteen times around the world. She was crestfallen on hearing of his death and lit a candle beside a photo of The Thin White Duke in her lounge. Flannery had grown up in Glasgow in the 1960s and became hooked after hearing Space Oddity. “There was a shop in Govan Cross that used to make those huge platform boots that Bowie wore and I remember my brother James bought a pair and I was dead jealous,” she laughs. “You can imagine the looks my brother got wearing those boots in Govan. “When Bowie played the Apollo in Glasgow I was 16 and snuck into the Albany Hotel to meet him, but we were rumbled by staff and got thro n out ust before he arrived. “I moved to London in the ‘70s and saw him loads of times there and then emigrated to Fremantle in 1978 and saw him on the Let’s Dance Tour. “The video for Let’s Dance was shot in a bar in Australia and every time it came on people back home were looking for me in the background—I had to remind them that Australia was a big place.” Bowie’s last gig in WA was in 2003, when he played the Supreme Court Gardens on his Reality tour. t as the rst time the singer had toured Australia and New Zealand since 1987’s Glass Spider tour. Flannery says she frantically phoned her brother eight times, before 7am in the UK, to tell him Bowie was dead. “When he came on Top of the Pops my father used to say ‘There’s the main man’,” she laughs. “He appealed to all generations—it’s really sad he’s gone.” New Computers from $649 • Business Grade Laptops • Laptop Repairs • Mac Repairs • Computer Accessories • Upgrades • On-site Repairs bentech computers local since 1998 Call us NOW 9430 9243 100 Wray Ave, Fremantle www.bentech.com.au DANCE CENTRAL Children’s Dance Classes ENROLMENT DAYS Sat 23 January & Sat 30 January 9am - 2pm Fremantle’s Favourite Dance School! While Pearson practised all styles of knitting, he was fascinated by the traditional patterns of remote English shing villages. Ms Hanson says her husband’s work aimed to preserve this historical style of knitting, as it was a dying art. “He realised that all the people that were good at this were getting old, and all these beautiful patterns were going,” she says. Pearson also enjoyed other artistic pursuits, including lming and animation, and worked on the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie in 1968. He taught at Curtin University’s art and design department in the 1990s. Ms Hanson says there is “no doubt” Pearson had a strong impact on students: she showed the Herald a nitted gurine of her husband, a present from a student which became one of his favourite art pieces. She says he’d “faced the challenge of some blokes looking at him sideways” for working in a craft traditionally associated with women, but once they got to know him, they “didn’t take any notice”. “For years knitters have been pining for the return of Michael Pearson’s lovely book, Traditional Knitting, complete with historical notes, charts, photos and patterns for Fair Isle, Guernsey, and Aran sweaters,” said knitting guru Meg Swansen from Schoolhouse Press following the release of the latest revised edition. Pearson casts off Cancer claims knitting guru by LUCINDA PEARSON FREMANTLE artist Michael Pearson, a world authority on knitting, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his art last Thursday. The Solomon Street resident, who battled prostate then bone cancer, wrote Traditional Knitting in 1984, which widow Patricia Hanson says is “the authority” on the subject. Originating from North Yorkshire in the UK, Pearson’s expertise was sought after globally, and in 1985 the Australian Wool Corporation brought him over to teach his craft. After meeting his future wife at one of his knitting courses in Thornlie, he continued working in WA and was eventually granted Australian residence in the late 1980s. 261 Stock Road, Palmyra | 9330 3030 | www.palmyrafamilydental.com.au Very lim availabi ited lit y. The tree, on a road reserve near Forrest Road in Coolbellup, happens to be along the route of the proposed Roe 8. It may have been alive when James I was on the throne but it didn’t live to see out Elizabeth II. Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett describes the felling as “wanton destruction” of a “majestic tree”. Following nearby residents’ complaints about the presence of a beehive, Main Roads commissioned an arborist to investigate. The department claims the arborist deemed the tree to be a safety hazard as it had large, dry and dead limbs and there was evidence some had recently fallen. “The tree was inaccessible to be able to both safely trim branches and remove/eradicate a large bee hive hich as affecting nearby residents,” says a WA Main Roads spokesperson. “The centre of the tree was dead along with the tree canopy. Because of the bee infestation through the dead trunk, no other wildlife could utilise hollows for nesting. “The only sign of life were a few shoots sprouting from the base. The tree is not heritage listed or registered as signi cant.” Ecologist Andrew Moore says the government identi ed the jarrah — in one of its own reports — Remodelled • b a a arra r a b ra r a Photos by Matthew Dwyer Designed + installed by WA’s longest registered builder. 63 years Building Experience as one of signi cant trees in the area because it had more than ve hollows and was a nesting site for black cockatoos. “I counted around eight hollows suitable for nesting for ring-neck parrots, pardalotes and several other bird species,” Mr Moore says. “Over the centuries this tree would have supported many generations of wildlife.” Mayor Howlett says the decision to cut the tree down is “bizarre at best” and reflects oor decision making at a time when trees of this stature and maturity are rapidly disappearing from our landscape and increasing the adverse impact on our flora and fauna”. “The city will be seeking a full explanation from Main Roads WA and their contractor(s) as to why a tree needs to be cut down to remove a bee hive. “Two hundred, 300, 400 or more years’ growth gone in minutes.” Complete service from start to finish. An industry veteran, Vince is celebrating an amazing 40 years in the business. Often in real estate, agents come and they go, particularly in a challenging market. Not Vince, who has outlasted many a so called high-flyer, with a steady diligence and integrity that has made him a stalwart of the industry. Servicing the Cockburn and Fremantle areas, Vince’s vast local knowledge is second to none. 21 January 2016 The date of this incredible milestone for Mr Mondi is 21 January 2016, who started his real estate career in 1976 with Eastough Real Estate in Wesley Arcade, Fremantle. 21 January has held special significance throughout Vince’s life. It is the date that he and his family arrived in WA, when Vince was just 18 years old. The family rented a home in Tuckfield Street, Fremantle for 6 months before purchasing their own in King Street, East Fremantle. Like so many Sicilian immigrants of his era, Vince seized the opportunities that Australia offered and was hard at work as a brickie’s labourer, then building the carpark at Point and Cantonment, before moving into sales with Roberts Snap Frozen Foods for 8 years. Vince married his sweetheart Graziella (Grace) in 1974, with their first child born on 21 January 1975. After a short stint owning and operating a deli 34 March St Spearwood CLASSIC 60’S RETRO $540 - $570,000 3 1 2 Funky 3 bedroom house with high ceilings, REAL wooden floorboards, huge windows, all on a large block zoned R40 with multiple dwelling potential. Fantastic quiet location close to Phoenix shops and transport. John Flint 0412 687 626 in Palmyra, Vince was keen for new challenges. He decided to give real estate a go. A natural from the start, it soon became his ‘thing’. After Eastough Realty, he went into partnership with Daniel Surina at Dial-a-Home Realty in Queen St, Fremantle. Vince then joined Bonavita and Associates in South Terrace, South Fremantle, where he remained for 11 wonderful years. Bonavita and Associates then became the Professionals, then amalgamated with W F Samson and Co, who had 2 offices, Fremantle and Spearwood. Vince was setting the world on fire, listing and selling and having a ball. Selling properties was a little different in the 1970s. Trust and honesty were the cornerstones of Vince’s success, one’s word was an oath, with many a deal done and the exchange of thousands of dollars in cash on a handshake. “We don’t ask Vince who he knows, we ask him who don’t you know, and there aren’t too many people Vince doesn’t know!” Vince started the home open tradition on a Sunday…a Sunday?! Sacrilege! Today a Sunday home open is common practice, but Vince certainly copped some flak from other agents about that one in the early days. By 1985, Vince and Grace had three beautiful children and with a growing family to support, Vince moved to B W Backhouse and Associates in Spearwood. This was Vince’s best period in real estate, selling 18 properties a month. Not long afterwards B W Backhouse 37 Leonard Way Spearwood $450,000 3 1 changed to Cockburn Real Estate and then to Cockburn Professionals. Most reps of today might feel unsettled and frustrated by all these changes. But not Vince, he kept listing and selling, and looking after his clients. Indeed one of the attributes of a great real estate sales person is their ability to adapt to the changing market, and Vince is certainly used to change. A Force in Cockburn When the opportunity arose for him to return to his old patch of Cockburn, Vince jumped at the chance, setting up at Professionals Cockburn, which eventually became Elders Real Estate Central and where he remains to this day. Today Vince has his nose to the grindstone, still listing and selling, but also sharing his invaluable knowledge and experience with the team. “We don’t ask Vince who he knows, we ask him who don’t you know, and there aren’t too many people Vince doesn’t know! His wide network of contacts, outstanding people skills and extensive experience have all contributed to his long and successful real estate career. Vince is a very special member of the team. His enormous memory and quick wit keeps our sales meetings lively. He is an absolute asset to our team and a gentleman to boot,” said Elders Central principal Grant Robinson. 30 Winterfold Road Hilton 1 STARTING OUT OR WINDING DOWN? Our brains are a bit like politics they say, with the right at loggerheads with the left, resulting in cognitive dissonance and continuing bad habits, whether smoking, over-eating or a host of mental health issues including depression, phobias and psychosomatic problems such as psychogenic pain. Acting a bit like parliament’s speaker, hypnotherapy brings order: “[Uniting] the opposing sides of the brain,” Mr Thonnissen says. “Our approach to hypnotherapy aims to align subconscious thinking with conscious thinking, eliminating internal mental conflicts that may lie at the heart of undesired behaviours.” Forget “look deep into my eyes”, or the pendulum motion of a fob watch–that’s for the stage and old movies–today’s therapeutic hypnotherapy is about relaxing enough to shut down the constant battle of the brain’s hemispheres as people are lulled into an almost sleep-like state. Fed by Hobart’s vibrant scene, she released her debut album First Day in 2014, and made it to number 7 in the Amrap Air-it Charts. Now based in Melbourne, Louise is upping the tempo with her self-produced EP – Tantric Shuffle - a release spearheaded by the cool quirk of its single, ‘Get Back’. With a bittersweet groove and rhythmic vocals, ‘Get Back’ is a playful pop song about trying to become a kinder person. The EP is launching in late January.
