Message from
President
T
his has been a very exciting year for me indeed! My experiences have enabled
me to learn a lot while “Rising to the Challenge of Healthier School Meals”. I
have made lifelong friendships that I will treasure. Now it is time to put the puzzle
pieces together. This year’s conference in Monroe will be
very exciting. Meagan Brown, President Elect and the
conference co-chairs JoLynn Correro and Sonjia Kinsey
have been working very hard planning a great conference.
I would like to take this time to thank the Executive Board
and Committee Chairpersons for all their efforts and hard
work to make this a great year. I would also like to thank
my family and the Iberia Parish School Board for
their understanding of the time that I had
to spend away from home and work to fulfill my obligation
as President of SNAL. I encountered very valuable
learning experiences while attending CNIC (in
Orlando, Florida) and LAC (in Washington, DC).
To the SNAL membership, I truly thank you for
allowing me to represent you as your president.
I look forward to receiving my SNA Thelma Flanagan Gold Achievement Award
in Denver this summer. May God bless each and
every one of us as we strive to continue to meet the
nutritional needs of our children.
Thanks for a great year,
Theresa Lopez
President

Kudos!
...on belonging to such a remarkable group of individuals who make up our 2500+ SNAL
membership. As the wondrous fall leaves provides us with picturesque views, we toil with yet
another exciting school year with many questions and challenges, many not yet determined.
Yet, despite the “hustle and bustle” that the school year brings, your comrades of SNAL are
working very hard to offer you an educational experience and an opportunity to network like
never before at the SNAL’s 59th Annual State Conference —the premier conference for
Louisiana’s school nutrition professionals, to be held in the in North Louisiana’s Hub, Monroe
Louisiana “the place where people meet”. Respectively each year, SNAL links together the
school nutrition community to unite collective knowledge and resources of our profession,
allowing our members the chance to get connected to the skills, strategies and solutions needed
to invigorate your program, entice your students and enhance your career. So come and join us
in the “Twin Cities” for food, fun, and shopping. Oh and we didn’t forget the family, Monroe-West
Monroe has a variety of Family Fun activities to offer as well. So join us in “Piecing Together……
Patterns for a Healthier tomorrow.”

Executive Director
W
asn’t it just yesterday we were enjoying the cool fall breezes? Where
does time go? As this school year comes to a close, School Nutrition seems to
be facing many important issues. Two main issues come to my mind, which
are the new Federal Regulations and the changes occurring in Baton Rouge’s
legislative session.
We need to become knowledgeable in the bills being introduced
by our legislators. Education, Reform, and Money seem to be the
buzz words this session. School Nutrition recently took on Senate
Bill 413 which proposed the option to superintendents to opt out
food services to management companies. Several individuals were
instrumental in helping to get information and attending hearings.
Eric Sunstrom, our Legislative Consultant, assisted and organized
several key supervisors who dropped everything to assist in this fight.
Special thanks goes out to our many friends in industry, who came
to our rescue by providing calls and emails testifying the negative
impact on the Louisiana economy, if a school system chooses this
option. We could not have won this battle without your assistance.
It is in times like these that a strong membership helps defeat negative
changes to our School Nutrition programs. In order to keep School Nutrition
a rock solid program we need to continue to stand together and when the
occasion arises be ready to voice our opinion, to those in control, by numbers.
Our voices are stronger and better heard by the volume of people we have
speaking on the behalf of Child Nutrition. Encourage your fellow workers
who are not members to consider joining next school year. It may make the
difference between still having a job to go to the following school year.
Changes in the Federal regulations were one of the few USDA issues
which received the most public comments. It can be credited to individuals
like you, across this country, that took time out to raise issue with the many
concerns of the proposal. Next school year will be more challenging than
usual with the added burden of serving more and higher priced foods.
But be assured that you can learn about these and so many more issues this
June at the annual State SNAL Conference. The Conference committee
has been busy designing a conference filled with both educational and fun
activities. Conference dates are June 12 – 14, 2012. Please refer to the
Conference Mailout Flyer and the Conference section of this journal for
more information. I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Monroe.
May God Bless –
Marlene Joy, Executive Director

SNAL
Conference
The 59th Annual SNAL
Conference to be held in
Monroe, Louisiana on June
12-14 promises to be a oneof-a-kind experience you
don’t want to miss. We will
be housed in a string of hotels
located on the frontage road
along I-20 in West Monroe.
The Monroe Civic Center will
host all conference functions.
This year’s conference theme,
“Piecing Together…Patterns
for a Healthier Tomorrow”,
promotes the idea that your
child nutrition program along with the school staff, parents and community
provide the components to produce healthy, educated children. It is the intent of
this conference program to provide you with the tools to care for yourself and the
children you serve.
The Louisiana Department of Education, Division of Nutrition Support, will
present the update as an all-day session on Tuesday, June 12th, 8:00 a.m.
– 3:30 p.m. Representatives from the Southwest Regional office of USDA
will be conducting a training on the final rule to update the school meals offered
under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, as required
by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. This will include, but will not be
limited to, information on the new nutrition standards, offer vs. serve, and direct
certification. There is a $25.00 registration fee (early registration) for this session
to cover the cost of refreshments and lunch for all persons registered.
Two pre-conference workshops will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday,
June 12thth – 13th: Nutrition 101 or Serving It Safe. Both courses will be
conducted by representatives from the National Food Service Management
Institute. This is a wonderful opportunity to earn CE Hours toward SNA
Certification.
Plan to bowl on Tuesday from 5pm –8pm in that special costume. The
Scavenger Hunt will be around again this year. Those of you who love to shop
will enjoy the boutiques and antique shops on Trenton Street in West Monroe, or
many of the additional stores open at the mall and in adjacent shopping centers.
For a $10.00 ticket, enjoy a comfortable ride in a Charter Bus to a Shreveport
casino. Tours will also be offered on Tuesday to the Biedenharn Museum and
Gardens, Layton Castle, and Landry Vineyards.
The SNAL Executive Board and House of Delegates will be meeting
Wednesday morning. Check out the House of Delegates and see your Association
in action; OR plan to arrive in Monroe in time to attend the first of the breakout
sessions being offered Wednesday morning.

Exhibits and breakout sessions will be held at the Monroe Civic Center Arena
and Conference Center. The 1st General Session will be held in the Monroe
Civic Center Theater Wednesday, June 13th at 3pm. Our speakers will include
Dr. Katie Wilson, Executive Director of the NFSMI, presenting ”Hats Off To
You and All of the Nutrition Nonsense”, and Maureen G. Mulvaney (MGM)
who will present “Secret Patterns for Success with Pieces of Love”.
For the Wednesday evening entertainment – you can dance the night away
with Easy Eddie and the Party Rockers, try your luck at Bingo, sing that song you
always wanted to sing with Mike McKinsey and Karaoke, learn to line dance
or zumba, or meditate and relax to gospel singing. There is truly something for
everyone!
For the finale, “All That GIitters…A Night of a Thousand Stars!” We are rolling
out the red carpet for YOU in our Hollywood themed SNAL Star-Studded
Dinner. Thursday night, dress in your Hollywood best and expect to see and be
seen – semi-formal or dressy outfit (Sunday’s best). Do not forget to participate
in the table decoration contest again this year! The 2nd General Session will
include the installation of the 2012-2013 SNAL Executive Board, and will

Easy Eddie & the Partyrockers is a regionally successful musical group established in mid
1985. This group has performed all across the southeastern United States from Texas to
Florida. The band is based in Ferriday, Louisiana, which is located in East/Central Louisiana.
Ferriday is the home of early rocker Jerry Lee Lewis, country music star Mickey Gilley, and
world-famous evangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Easy Eddie and the partyrockers have performed
over 2000 times in the last 20 years. Those performances include concerts, festivals,
wedding receptions (considered to be the wedding reception specialists), political functions,
conventions, and parties and balls of all kinds. The band has been the opening act for many
nationally and globally known artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, The Edgar Winter Group, Leon
Russell, Bad Company, Clarence Carter ,and most recently The Little River Band.
In the beginning, Easy Eddie and the Partyrockers started out being an oldies band playing
mostly 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s hits. Today’s Partyrockers cover an extremely wide range
of music from rhythm and blues to rock to country to even some of today’s current hits. The
band’s song list contains over 200 selections. During performances there is very little “talk
time” or “downtime” as the band goes from song to song without pauses or interruptions.
With over 150 years of combined musical experience, the band’s professionalism, energy,
camaraderie, and musical ability is an awesome thing to behold.
Band members include former three term Mayor of Ferriday, Louisiana, Glen Mc Glothin and
Jimmy Wheeler and Jerry Williams of Natchez, MS and Paul Jacobson of Brookhaven, MS,
and Gary Caldwell of Vidalia, LA. Larry Boland, from Houston TX, is the sound & technical
consultant.

Legislative
Update
I
t is that time of year again; at press time, the 2012 regular legislative
session begins. As of the bill deadline on March 2, legislators have pre-filed
almost 1600 bills. Each legislator can only file 5 more bills
until April 2. Once again, as it has been for the past two
years, everyone is discussing the state’s deficit and what will
be cut from the next budget. Louisiana has seen mid-year
budget cuts across the board and there will be more to come.
Of course the School Nutrition Association will be dealing
with issues of our own. Like every year, there have been
rumors of privatization. However there currently aren’t any
bills addressing that issue. There are plenty of bills relative
to education in general. Education is the governor’s top
priority for 2012. Governor Jindal says he plans to address shortcomings
with “innovation, reform and improvement.” His two major bills combine
both school accountability and more choices for kids in failing schools.
This year the American Heart Association (AHA) will tackle childhood
obesity and I plan to watch those bills carefully. Although none have been
introduced, I know AHA plans to work with daycare facilities to establish
an active time for kids. They are also looking for state matching dollars to
establish pilot programs in certain school districts. AHA calls this Targeted
Coordinated School Health (TCSH). The basic premise is to place a full
time health coordinator in each district. This program fits well with our
mandate to serve nutritious, well balanced meals.
Finally, as the 2012 legislative session begins and the debates on education
and retirement benefits heat up, the membership of SNAL should remember
that helping support certain candidates during elections help make these
fights easier. Knowing we have friends in the legislature that are already
educated on our issues makes the job of the membership and the lobbyist
easier. As was stated in the fall edition of this newsletter many businesses
and trade associations around the state have PACs which they use to help
fund the election of friendly candidates. This plan would no doubt help the
School Nutrition Association during these times of uncertainty.

Lafourche Parish School Nutrition Association
Chapter 29
October 27, 2011
Submitted by Lauren Fletcher
The members of the Lafourche Parish School Nutrition Association are proud to announce they
are 124 members strong.
Lafourche Parish was represented very well at the
2011–2012 Officers
SNAL conference in Lafayette this past summer.
President – Miranda Sanchez
Twenty-three members including the supervisor
President Elect – Yvonne Folse
and area manager attended the conference.
Vice President – Angela Woods
The supervisor and area manager along with 11
Treasurer – Eve Clement
Secretary – Sandra Wempren
members attended ANC in Nashville, Tennessee.
Past President – Sydney Waguespack
All members’ registration fees, lodging and travel
were paid with funds raised by dedicated and hardworking members. As always the fund raising activities included a raffle, rice dressing mix sales, pan
sales, dry roux mix sales and bread dough sales. By far the most profitable fund raising activity is the
on-going rice dressing mix sales.
The officers have met and plans are in place for another exciting year. All members were given
a calendar of events for the association and the first general meeting was held in October. The
members continue to stay busy donating their time
and talents to many community service activities.
Efforts are already underway to raise funds for the
state conference in Monroe
this summer and for sending
members to ANC in Denver
in July, 2012.
In addition to all the efforts
of Chapter 29, all cafeterias
are participating in the “Fuel
Up to Play 60” program. GO
SAINTS AND GO CHILD NUTRITION!!!!!!! Many thanks go to Linda
Greco with SUDIA for all her efforts with these events.
The most exciting event
is that all 26 cafeterias are participating in
the “Moo Dat” competition from October 3October 28, 2011. We are doing activities to
increase milk consumption among the students.
We all know the importance of receiving three
sources of dairy a day and now the schools can
win prizes for their schools through this contest.
Members of the
chapter attended
a kick-off event
at
the
New
Orleans Saints
Superdome on September 16, 2011. This was a very exciting event
for all those in attendance.
Keep up the great work Lafourche.

Ascension Parish School Nutrition Association…
Giving Back
By: Sherri Stevens, ACNA President
The Ascension Parish School Board Child Nutrition
Program staff, managers, and technicians reached
out to our community and saw a need for listening,
loving, caring, and feeding the needy families in our
area during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
At this time of the year, everyone is running around
buying all the trimmings in preparation for the big
feast for their family and friends. Or they are focused
on getting to the big sale the day after Thanksgiving.
We all know it takes all of our time and money to find
the perfect Thanksgiving turkey and/or Christmas gift.
We listened to our community; and there was a need Pictures from right to left are Cindy Adams, (technician)
for our Association to reach out to them. Seventeen Linda Johnson, (Manager), Alice Phillips (technician) and
schools gathered all the trimmings needed for a great David Sonnier (Manager)
feast, and the association bought the perfect turkey. It
was heartwarming to have so many schools reach out to the students and their families in Ascension
Parish. Several schools had wonderful stories. One of our schools found out they had a family that
didn’t have a stove, so the manager and technicians delivered Piccadilly to
them on Thanksgiving Day. Another one of our
schools chose one of their families to help out,
and then that family moved to another area in
the parish. So they found them and delivered
them their Thanksgiving dinner.
With us caring for our students and their families
at Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Association
has begun to reach out to other organizations. We
are having a jean day to raise money for Hands
of Hope-Battered Women’s Shelter. We are also
doing a walk with the March of Dimes. In the
past we have worked to serve our community,
but more hands will give more hope to our students in Ascension
Parish. We, as an Association, are not just feeding our students nutritious meals in school, but we
are putting the time and effort in to let the community know we are here to help.
Vernon Parish
The Vernon Parish School Service Chapter has been involved in several activities this year.
Starting off the year we had several ladies raise money and participate in “Race for a Cure” with the
Susan Komen breast cancer awareness organization.
Also the Vernon Parish Tourism Commission sponsored their first ever “Vernon Parish Cookbook
Festival”. We set up a booth there and sold our very own cookbook, “Feeding our Future Today”.
Our Chapter has also participated in selling “Rada” knives.
In December we had our Christmas party. We brought in non-perishable food items for a local
family and we each brought unique Christmas ornaments for our ornament exchange. Lots of food,
fun and fellowship.
At our February meeting we had a “Chocolate” cook off! Each person who wanted to take the
challenge brought their favorite chocolate dish. We selected three people whom sacrificed
themselves to be judges and 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were awarded. Each participate did a great job!
It was a delicious and fun meeting.
We are working hard and looking forward to going to conference this year.

Bossier Parish
The members of the Bossier Parish School Nutrition Association have
started the 2011-2012 school year with a wonderful amount of excitement.
At our back to school meeting we had a sign in sheet for all employees
that wanted to join the association. At this time we acquired several new
members.
At our annual Christmas meeting we collected toys for the Toys for Tots
campaign and canned goods for the local food banks. We all participated in
exercising by line dancing taught to us by a local dance instructor. Everyone
had a wonderful Christmas meeting.
Our association raffled gift baskets for Valentine’s Day to raise money to
help with their conference expenses. We are continuing to have our fund
raisers such as selling pans and knives and money raffles to help with the
expenses of going to conference
in Monroe this summer.
Our local association is extremely
involved in our wellness fairs that
we conduct around the parish
at our elementary schools. This
includes food identification,
exercise, and many games
centered on nutrition. We have
a taste testing supper for parents
and students to sample our lunch
menus items offered around the
parish. We have friendly fruits and vegetables to help with our festivals, Goofy grape, Adam Apple,
Turkey and Golden corn girl.
At this time we will be asking for volunteers to help at our Wellness fairs that we are sponsoring at
Central Park and Meadowview Elementary schools.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at conference in Monroe this summer.

Tailgate Party
St. John the Baptist
Submitted by:
Kim T. Scioneaux
St. John the Baptist School District held a “Fuel Up to Play 60” Tailgate Party Kickoff recently at
John L. Ory Magnet School in La Place, under the direction of its principal Teri Noel.
As a part of the school’s “Making the Grade” celebration, Ory Magnet used a play out of the
“Fuel Up to Play 60 Play Book” to incorporate activities that encourage students to increase their
physical activity up to 60 minutes a day and to make healthier food choices – Tailgate Party style.
The Tailgate Party, which included students and parents, began as a picnic-style meal that included
whole grain and dark green leafy vegetables along with fresh fruit. Afterwards, the students
participated in various physical activities including an obstacle course, parachutes, volleyball,
indoor scooter soccer and a flag football game that was led by special guest Lionel Washington, a
former NFL Oakland Raider and LaPlace resident. Door prizes included three footballs signed by
NFL Players, including one signed by Washington.
“Fuel Up to Play 60” is the collaboration between the National Dairy Council and the NFL. The
purpose of the campaign is to educate students and their families on the importance of making
healthy food choices and getting up to 60 minutes of physical activity daily to help fight childhood
obesity.
John L. Ory, Emily C. Watkins, and Lake Pontchartrain each received $3,000 in grant funds through
the “Fuel Up to Play 60” program to purchase physical activity supplies and educational materials
promoting the importance of healthy food choices and increased physical activity.
“Fuel Up to Play 60” is part of a larger initiative led
by St. John the Baptist Parish School Board Child
Nutrition Department, Lorraine Jackson Director,
to help combat childhood obesity. Other programs
provided through the district to help fight childhood
obesity include the “Healthier Us School Challenge”
sponsored by the USDA and BESE Board; “School
Putting Prevention to Work”, a state mandated
initiative supporting the revision and implementation
of the Comprehensive School Wellness Plan; and the
“Dairy Optimization/Expanded Breakfast Program”,
sponsored by Southeast United Dairy Industry
Association, which promotes “Breakfast on the Go” and “Breakfast in the Classroom”.

With the New Federal Guidelines finally
released everyone is busy revising menus,
recipes and the bid packets. It is the goal of
this program to provide nutritious and well
balanced meals to all the students within the
Diocese of Lafayette.
We have almost 30 members who have
expressed interest in attending SNAL
Conference in Monroe this summer. I am sure the conference committee has been working hard
and we look forward to seeing everyone in Monroe!

St. Tammany Parish
We have been very busy organizing and building our chapter that was established last year after six
years of inactivity.
In September we held our Kick-Off Meeting. This is an opportunity
for all employees (members or not) to join in the fun. We told
them about the benefits of SNA membership and had food brokers
provide different pizzas for our sampling.
December 9th we had our annual Christmas Party for members only.
We had great food and lots of fun and games. There was Christmas
music, Santa and Mrs. Clause as well as the elves. The old-time
cake walk was a big hit (and we made money too). But everyone got
in the action with the “turn yourself into a reindeer” game.
Valentine’s Day, our Assistant Superintendent, Bill Brady presented flowers and candy to Robin
Draus, our Heart of the Program winner.
We are proud to have two of our schools recognized as
winners in the National School Lunch Week contest.
Abita Elementary won first place and Pearl River
High School won second place in
Louisiana.
Our membership continues to grow.
Just 18 months ago, we had only 2
members. Then we grew to 155 and
as of March 1, we have 225 members.
One factor is payroll deduction that
we started this year.
Our schools won first and second place in the Black and Gold Milk Promotion.
Madisonville Junior High won $5000 and Lancaster Elementary won $3000 for
increased milk sales. Lance Moore of the Saints was our special guest at the pep
rally held at Madisonville Junior.
Our annual business meeting was held February
8. Everyone was given the budget and a full
accounting of expenses and income. Over 50
members attended. We held a King Cake Contest
with over 17 schools participated. We gave cash
prizes to the top three. Our bakers were very creative
– a spicy crab king cake with crab dip, a four-foot
cheerleader
king
cake and a king cake
shaped like a Mardi
Gras mask.
We elected our board for the 2012-13 school year at the February
meeting. We were thrilled that Kathy James, President and Cherie
Sharp, Treasurer agreed to serve one more year. The new officers
are: Liz Johnson, President-Elect; Terry Windom, Secretary, Dee
Singletary, Managers’ Representative and Tammy Ducote, Assistant
Managers’ Representative. We also elected an office Representative
for the first time, Melissa Hoover.
We are continuing our pan and knife sales. Our goal is to have enough funds to send several people
to Monroe. Looking forward to seeing you there!

IBERIA PARISH
Submitted By Felesia Roman
The beginning of a new school year brings about excitement and planning for our association. The
first meeting of the Iberia Parish School Nutrition Association was held in September. As part of
this meeting, we had our Fall Membership Drive. We are delighted that our association increased
with the addition of three new members, with two more being added in February.
As a fundraiser, we participated in the Annual Gumbo Cook-off by sponsoring a “sweets booth”.
This was a great experience and a fun-filled event that we may consider being a part of each year.
We are grateful for Tim’s Air Conditioning. They donated the booth we had and their earnings
from the cook-off to help us with our fundraising endeavor.
SNA of Iberia is always seeking to help the less fortunate in the community. With the holiday
season approaching, plans were made to donate food items for Thanksgiving and gifts for Christmas
to needy families. Thanksgiving Baskets, which included the collected can goods from our members,
a turkey and dressing mix, were delivered to three families. At Christmas, we shopped for gifts. The
items purchased included toys, clothing and accessories. We were able to bring smiles to faces of
three families. Our association touched the lives of six families. Our hearts were filled with great joy
as the recipients of these blessings expressed their appreciation and welcomed us into their homes.
It is always an honor to be selected by your peers for a job well done. In February, we held our “Heart
of the Program” ceremony. Dale R. Henderson, Superintendent of Iberia Parish Schools, and C.
Michael Judice, Assistant Superintendent, were our invited guest.
Excitement is in the air as we are looking forward to the upcoming conferences. We are looking
forward to spending time with our friends from different Louisiana Parishes.
ST. MARTIN PARISH
Wow! What a year! As the school year nears end in St. Martin, we cannot help but wonder where
did the time go? Wasn’t is just yesterday we were starting school or enjoying the Thanksgiving
break? Or is it that we are all so busy with those four letter dirty words like time, work, kids, and
life in general?
St. Martin has been working hard on their membership efforts. The President, Judy Delahoussaye,
has been working around the clock to encourage new members to join. A special thanks to our
existing membership who renew with us annually. It is individuals like you that make our association
so great. The SNA website was shared with the membership to entice members to explore all that
the Association has to offer in Professional Development, Certification, and membership benefits.
St. Martin is looking forward to our state conference in Monroe. A little over thirty members will
be making the trip in June. We cannot wait to see what our Northern colleagues have planned for
us!
President Delahoussaye is busy completing his book for the President’s Gold Award. Supervisor Clair
Blanchard, Secretary Rita Seneca and the chapter’s president, Judy Delahoussaye, attended the
Southwest Leadership Workshop to assist with the chapter’s plan of action. Clair Blanchard presided
over a knowledge based decision making session regarding the mega issue about privatization.
St. Martin actively responded with emails and phone calls to our Senator and Representative
regarding opposition to SB 413. We are thankful to all who helped kill this bill in committee.

East Baton Rouge
The EBR-SNAL Chapter has been busy for the last few months having fun, learning, recruiting,
and helping others. In November we hosted a Food Drive for the EBR Food Bank and we were able
to collect $13 in donations and 165 lbs in non-perishable food. The following month, December,
we held our annual SNAL Christmas Bazaar. At the Bazaar we had baked
good items, jewelry, gift sets, a wreath decorating class, and several door
prizes. Two of the door prizes for members included a free trip to the 2012
Louisiana State Conference
and 1 year of membership dues
paid. The main attraction
for this year’s bazaar was the
raffling of a Christmas Wreath
made by our Administrative
Director, Dr. Nadine Mann. At
the conclusion of our Winter
Membership Drive we had a
scheduled training and at that
time we held an additional drawing for 1 new member to
be selected to receive a trip to the 2012 Louisiana State
Conference. We have 14 new members thanks to our
combined efforts during the Winter Membership Drive.
At the beginning
of the New Year
we started off
by having Paola
Ocha, the Data Coordinator for Human Resources of
the EBR Parish School System, come speak to us at our
January meeting about retirement and what it takes to be
prepared within the system to retire. February is Heart of
the Program month and we had an outstanding amount
of participation this year with a total of 49 nominees. The
program consisted of recognition of the nominees, a reading
of a poem written by our Supervisor’s Representative, Mary
Wilkinson, a song by one of our newest members, and our
guest speaker was Mrs. Gail Johnson, retired EBRPSS-CNP
Asst. Superintendent. She spoke about how not knowing
the precursors to or not acknowledging family history of
heart disease is detrimental to your health and your life. We continue to close out each of our
meetings by dancing away the pounds and having fun learning new dances such as the “Same Ole’
2 Step.”

South Central Representative’s Report
Submitted by Mary Wilkinson
February 29, 2012
The first meeting of the school year was held on December 9, 2011. The meeting was held at the
new amphitheater, located at a lake in Greenwood Park. It was hosted by the City of Baker School
System, Henry Belin, Child Nutrition Supervisor.
The Regional Representative, Mary Wilkinson, held a meeting with
chapter presidents and supervisors, one hour prior to the meeting to
assist the chapter presidents with completing requirements for the
Thelma Flanagan Gold Award. A total of nine participants attended
the workshop and six have turned in Form A (President’s Intend to
Submit Thelma Flanagan Gold Award Book).
The speaker for the day was Heather Murphy, “Corporate Health
Wellness Works”. Each month, the company explores a different health
topic. January was “Wellness Promotion Month”. Information was
presented on obesity, tobacco use and stress, caring for your back and
injury prevention. The agency assisted the Baker School System with
the “Biggest Loser’s Contest”.
Lorraine Jackson, supervisor from St. John Parish, gave an inspiring presentation on Schools
Putting Prevention to Work (SPPW). The presentation was followed by the Healthier US School
Challenge (HUSSC) white house celebration given by Carla Greggs, West Feliciana Parish and
Paula Warner, Iberville Parish. Both attended the celebration in Washington, DC.
Judy Stracener led a lengthy discussion on the SFS-11-70 Act No. 737, Denial of Meal.

Plans for a manager’s workshop during the summer of 2012
The districts in South Central area have been very busy recruiting new members, providing service
to different organizations, having fundraisers to assist the chapter and provide scholarships, holding
monthly meetings and exploring topics that provide health information for all. In addition, many
have celebrated “Heart of the Program Winner”.
