Letter from our Presidents
Dear Friends:
A student attending a lecture series at our hospital asked if our mission
statement was current. We got the sense that the student asked this question
because the wall mural displaying a copy of the mission appeared dated.
What the student may have been asking was: Is the hospital’s mission still
relevant? Why hasn’t it changed over time?
Hospital for Special Care’s (HSC) management team members know that
we visit and review this mission statement regularly, particularly when we
explore initiatives and forge new relationships. Will this meet our mission,
vision, standards and values is a question that is always asked when we are
reviewing any new idea.
This statement was written in the mid-nineties and has served us well over
the years. It speaks to the lessons that have been learned over time and
reflects those experiences within the statement. It is an outline telling us to
build strong foundations and relationships, and has a theme that has allowed
us to grow, to become stronger, and to serve our community. The statement
looks to the future and stays relevant.
Our country has faced many difficult challenges over the past few years.
One of these challenges has been the rising cost of healthcare. Our mission
statement has been the outline for ensuring that we stay focused on the
people that we serve as we navigate the changes brought on by healthcare
reform. HSC has often been on the forefront of innovation in healthcare
delivery and program development, and we’ll continue to be the answer
to solving difficult healthcare problems for other hospitals, for state and
federal government agencies, and for the community.
Our ability to remain flexible, quality conscious and financially efficient
will make us the hospital of choice in the future, as we have been in our
recent past, for people with complex medical needs. We remain fortunate
for having such dedicated employees that understand the complexity of our
patient care and the trials of the healthcare system. As you read this report,
you will see examples of our ability to respond to community needs during
this very uncertain time in healthcare.
Our mission remains strong and relevant.
Thank you for being part of our team. Thank you for caring about HSC
and our mission.

A Letter from our Chair – Elizabeth K. Fumiatti
Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends,
Over the past 18 months, we’ve grown into the most specialized
neuromuscular center in the region. Headed by the area’s three leading
neuromuscular medicine specialists, HSC has become the largest and most
comprehensive neuromuscular clinical and research facility in Connecticut.
The Neuromuscular Center treats over 1000 patients annually in one of
three multidisciplinary and specialized weekly clinics – including the
Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinic for Adults, the MDA
Clinic for Children, and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association
(ALSA) Clinic.
Under the leadership of Dr. Jinsy Andrews, the Center’s Research and
Clinical Trials Unit experiments with promising new medications. HSC has
recently begun its third clinical trial hoping to find effective treatments for
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis, and other chronic
neuromuscular disorders. An expert team of therapists and nurses offer ALS
and MDA patients uncompromised care and accommodations all in a single
location. Hospital for Special Care is the only ALSA-certified program in
Connecticut, and one of only 35 in the country.
Our Neurobehavioral Program was initially established in the early 90’s, and
had consistently run with a full occupancy and a waiting list. In response to
changing community needs, we developed a new 15-bed freestanding unit
which was designed to incorporate lessons learned over many years. This
unit opened in July of 2010 and has been fully occupied since the fall.
HSC opened a dedicated Cardiac Medical Unit this year under the direction
of our board-certified intensivists Paul Scalise, MD, FCCP, Senior Vice
President of Medical Affairs and Steven R. Prunk, MD, FCCP, Medical
Director, Cardiac Medical Unit, and consulting cardiologists.
This comprehensive initiative was designed to stem the cycle of costly
emergency room readmissions. The program was created to treat and assist
patients who are striving to regain their functional ability while dealing with
the complications of heart failure.
Our “Hope Campaign” is currently underway. With the increased demand for
outpatient services, we have initiated a capital campaign to address the need for
increased services to treat people living with chronic diseases. HSC has also
studied the needs of individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and has
worked with various state agencies, advocacy groups as well as the governor’s
office to align our efforts with the needs of this growing population.
complex pediatrics, acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury has remained
high. This continues to be our first and foremost concern for our entire patient
population, regardless of which of our facilities or programs is involved.
As chair, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to David Crandall
and Dr. John Votto, our CEO’s, as well as their senior management and
support teams for their guidance and leadership in implementing these
changes. Additionally, I extend my thanks to the dedicated employees of the
many service areas that comprise the Center of Special Care. Because of
your commitment, dedication and caring, we are recognized among the top
not-for-profit, long-term acute care hospitals in the United States.
The New Britain Academy for Health Professions – a joint venture among
Hospital for Special Care, The Hospital of Central Connecticut, Chamber
of Commerce and Capital Workforce Partners, provides an opportunity for
high school students to explore the healthcare industry and develop relevant
skills. Students can start earning credits toward a two to four-year college
degree while still in high school. The program exposes students to the wide
and varied opportunities in the healthcare field, and hopefully to retain these
students as future employees.
To our numerous volunteers and Auxiliary members who give so generously
of your time, talent, and energy to ensure the continuing mission of our
hospital – please know how very much your efforts are appreciated.
Through all of these changes and initiatives, we are happy to report that the
quality of care of our trademark areas of specialization: pulmonary care,
I look forward to working with you all in this next year – you the special
people who are the Center of Special Care.
To my fellow board members – my special thanks for your time, diligence,
foresight and direction – the year ahead presents us with many new
challenges, but with your support I am confident we can meet these
challenges.
Elizabeth K. Fumiatti
Chairman of the Board
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal met patient and volunteer, Aliza Jenkins,
as well as staff during a walking tour of HSC last September.
Governor Dannel P. Malloy visited HSC last year during his campaign to
announce plans for a statewide Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities.
A campaign of hope and promise.
In response to the growing number of adults and children living with chronic
disease, HSC has embarked upon its first capital campaign in nearly twenty
years. Recent studies have shown that 87% of Americans between the ages
of 65 and 79 live with at least one chronic condition. Through an expansion
of our existing “Medical Home Model,” we are redesigning the way in which
our patients experience healthcare. We have witnessed a steady increase in
the need for outpatient services, allowing our complex patients to remain
at home and “come and go” for care. This coordinated and comprehensive
approach provides a cost-effective alternative to the current system of care.
Key facts about the “Hope Campaign”
• The Hope Campaign will increase the size of the Outpatient Center by four
times current capacity – from 4,000-square feet to over 18,000.
• The expansion will meet the needs of significantly more adults and
children who may now “come and go” for care. An estimated 78% of HSC
patients are now discharged to the community for ongoing outpatient care.
• The campaign target is $5.9 million, half of which has been raised. • Top benefactors to date include the Maximilian E. and Marion O. Hoffman
Foundation, the Hospital for Special Care Auxiliary, the American Savings
Foundation and Ms. Maria Pietrantuono.
Among the clinics slated for the
new center are:
Neuromuscular - ALS and muscular dystrophy (MD)
for adults and children
Neuromuscular Clinical Trials Research Center –
ALS and MD research
Neuropathy
Neuropsychology
Physiatry
Autism
Parkinson’s disease
Pulmonary disease
Spinal cord injury
Acquired Brain injury
Primary Care (for chronic adults and children)
Architectural rendering of the future outpatient center
It’s now easier for people with heart failure to live life more fully.
Hospital for Special Care remains committed to playing a leading role in
the development of standards and practices that help patients better manage
their disease while also helping control healthcare costs.
Under the direction of board-certified intensivists and cardiologists, the
Cardiac Care Initiative team will provide guidance and education for both
patients and their families.
Responding to the needs of a patient population on the rise, Hospital for
Special Care led Connecticut by opening the first comprehensive heart
failure inpatient unit in the state.
As the population ages, and as new treatments continue to evolve, this
unit will play an increasingly vital role. HSC is currently collaborating
with three major acute care hospitals in the region to provide treatment,
therapy and education to patients who have recently received a Left
Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). Additionally, patients who are preparing
for implantation of cardiac mechanical assist devices are able to receive
treatment, education and strengthening prior to surgery.
It is estimated that more than five million Americans are living with heart
failure. More than 500,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Once
discharged from acute care hospitals, these patients often go through a
painful and costly cycle of emergency room readmissions.
The comprehensive heart failure unit gives heart failure patients the
medical, physical and occupational therapies that will stabilize their
condition while helping them gain functional ability so that they can
return to home and community more quickly.
According to Paul Scalise, MD, FCCP, Senior Vice President of Medical
Affairs, “Through collaborative efforts with many of the leading acute care
hospitals in Connecticut, HSC’s ‘disease management’ approach to heart
failure will be a new style of acute care unlike any that we have known.”
This learning process will give the patient and caregivers the tools they
need to maintain an active and independent lifestyle when returning home.

An expanding Neurobehavioral Program
In response to a growing need for additional neurobehavioral beds, Hospital
for Special Care added a third neurobehavioral unit in July of 2010. A new
building was designed and constructed to accommodate an additional 15
patients. This new space fosters opportunities for patients’ independence and
eventual community re-entry.
The Neurobehavioral Program (NBP) is a long-term, inpatient rehabilitation
program that specializes in the treatment of individuals who have sustained
an acquired brain injury (ABI), and have had difficulty managing life in the
community, or in other facilities. The purpose of the NBP is to assist these
individuals in managing their behaviors appropriately, in learning skills to
maximize their independence, and improving their overall quality of life.
The NBP provides 24-hour physician coverage, nursing care, and supervision
on secured units. In each unit, the NBP provides a therapeutic environment
that utilizes a behavioral approach to treatment. Based on initial and ongoing
assessments, the team identifies and prioritizes behaviors that present
obstacles to successful community reintegration. The team works with the
patient and family, and/or conservator, to meet goals while incorporating the
patient’s cultural and spiritual beliefs.
The ultimate goal of the program is to reintegrate patients safely into the
community, in the least restrictive environment possible. This program
provides a highly-structured, safe, and supportive environment for learning.
HSC’s approach to medical care and rehabilitation begins and ends
with teamwork. Under the direction of John K. Stanwood, Ph D, Chief
of Psychology, neuropsychologists, physiatrists, registered nurses, case
coordinators, occupational, therapeutic recreation and speech therapists, along
with team leaders, behavioral specialists, and social workers work directly
with patients and their families to help patients achieve their maximum level
of functioning and independence.
A Vision of Innovation and Growth
Incredible things have been going on at Manes & Motions. We continue to evolve by
leaps and bounds!
Manes & Motions recently celebrated its third-year anniversary of its new home located
at the Daniels Farm in Middletown. This move for Manes & Motions has been an
exceptional one. Change has been good. It signifies vision, innovation and growth…
As part of its on-going mission to provide a wide range of sports and fitness activities
for individuals living with cognitive and physical special needs, HSC envisioned a
whole new world…where a hospital partners and affiliates with a program of our kind.
We are proud to announce that in 2010 our Rider Assistance Program (RAP) was
launched. RAP financially helps riders in need of support by offsetting the riding
fees and costs incurred each semester. This initiative is especially important to my
fellow board members and me, as we feel strongly that Manes & Motions should
make every effort to provide affordable access to our equine-assisted therapies and
services, regardless of a participant’s financial circumstances.
I am honored to introduce you to two of our newest Manes & Motions’ friends,
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and the Petit Family Foundation (PFF). Both, in their
respective missions, have also embraced our journey to affect positive change among our
riders – to improve the quality of so many lives met by our cornerstone mission. Taking
stock in our vision also demonstrates their unique understanding and appreciation of the
positive and magical effect horses, and equine therapy, play in our riders’ lives, and for all
of those who are challenged by chronic disease and conditions.
I had the pleasure of hosting a fellow Marine, and my new friend, William Petit, Sr.,
as he toured our Manes’ facility, spoke with staff and volunteers, and observed riders
in our program. We are most grateful to Dr. William Petit, Jr., William Petit, Sr.,
Hanna Chapman-Petit, the PFF Board of Directors, Norm LeBlanc and Trantolo &
Trantolo, all of whom had graciously named Manes & Motions a beneficiary of the
First Annual “Ride for Justice.” We appreciate the vision and generosity of the Petit
Family Foundation. Their generosity and partnership underscores this Foundation’s
perpetual and like interest to improve the quality of life for so many.
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, whose district includes Middletown, has been a
long-standing advocate of Hospital for Special Care (HSC). In support of HSC’s
continuum of care, Congresswoman DeLauro has also taken an interest in Manes &
Motions and visited our facility. During her visit, she observed a demonstration from
our “Horses for Heroes” program participants, toured our facility, and spoke with
riders to learn about the benefits of this initiative. She was especially interested in
the “Horses for Heroes” program focused specifically on veterans who have returned
from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan who are now coping with Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD), mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and other physical, emotional,
and psychological challenges.
She clearly understands our mission and realizes that our instructors, side-walkers,
and volunteers strive each day to understand our riders’ happiness and sadness; hopes
and frustration, progress and set-backs, new milestones achieved.
Speaking of milestones…in other news to share – a new, and very important
milestone has been achieved. We are proud to announce that the recommendation
of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc. (NARHA)
Accreditation Committee granted Manes & Motions with a “Premier Accredited
Center” status in January 2011. Just as other professions use standards of excellence
and rating systems to improve the well-being of their industries, professionals in the
field of equine-assisted activities have a distinction of their own through the Premier
Accredited Center (PAC) program. The PAC program and committee certifies centers
such as Manes & Motions, which have exceptional standards and have demonstrated
excellence in providing quality equine-assisted activities. A Center such as ours, that
meets these esteemed accreditation criteria based on administrative, facility, program
and applicable special interest standards, becomes a Premier Accredited Center.
We continue to work toward a year-round program which could only be realized if we
build an indoor arena. An indoor arena would enable us to reduce our waiting list and
bring even more happiness – all year long – and serve even more children, adolescents
and adults who really need us. With your help, this is what is on our horizon.
Yes, we are trailblazing!

Janina Orzechowska, Function Coordinator– Employee of the Year 2010
Janina is an absolute joy with whom to work each day. Janina’s work ethic
and enthusiasm for being a team player and always going the extra mile for
everyone at HSC is unparalleled. Her positive, can-do attitude; friendliness
and warmth are infectious. Her commitment to each task or project is
unwavering and her tireless spirit should be emulated. She is always offering
to do more, or take the initiative to make things easier and/or to render a
more efficient and successful outcome.
Janina consistently goes beyond the expectations of her performance
requirements. As Function Coordinator, her work schedule is never the
same. She maintains a high degree of flexibility in order to accommodate
all of HSC’s catering needs. Few realize that she may have many catering
requests on the same day, all for delivery at the same time. In addition to her
responsibility as Function Coordinator, she is also a cook, often assigned the
dual role of catering and patient meal service. She always gets everything
done on time and delivered with a smile.
Not many people realize how much love and care she puts into everything
she does. She is always striving to create and improve, such as using a
special herb or vegetable so that the garnish on a platter will be just right.
Janina’s spirit of cooperation and her superior customer service skills
have gone far in improving our environment at HSC, as her efforts have
contributed to some of our best social events, due to her attention to
every detail.
Janina Orzechowska was also honored as the Employee of the Month for
November 2009. Congratulations, Janina! This esteemed recognition, and
award as Employee of the Year, is so well deserved.

Making a Gift
to Hospital for
Special Care
Making a personal gift to
Hospital for Special Care is an
act of selfless generosity. There
are many ways to make a taxdeductible gift to the Hospital
during one’s lifetime or after.
We encourage you to consult
with your attorney, accountant
or other financial advisor when
considering a gift that may
have substantial impact on your
finances or estate. Sheila Hogan,
Vice President of the Hospital
for Special Care Foundation, is
also available for a confidential
discussion at your convenience.
Please call 860.832.6215.
GIFTS OF CASH
An outright gift of cash goes to
work right away to help improve
the lives of those we serve.
GIFTS OF SECURITIES
When you donate appreciated
securities (stocks and bonds) to
the Hospital for Special Care
Foundation, Inc., you will be
allowed a charitable deduction
for the fair market value of the
stock; additionally, you may avoid
potential capital gains tax on any
appreciation in the value of stock.
Giving stock gifts to the Hospital
for Special Care Foundation, Inc.
can be done either by electronic
transfer, mail, or in person.
GIFTS MATCHED BY
CORPORATIONS
Many corporations match the
charitable gifts made by their
employees and board members
who serve charitable institutions.
To receive information about a
company’s matching gift program,
please contact your human
resources department.
GIFTS BY WILL OR ESTATE
PLANNING
A charitable bequest is a gift to
the Hospital for Special Care
Foundation, Inc., in your will or
estate plan. You may designate the
Foundation to receive a bequest
of a specific dollar amount, a
percentage of your estate, or
specific assets such as stock,
securities or real estate.
Should you choose to include a
bequest to the Foundation in your
will, ask your attorney to include
this suggested language:
“I give and bequeath to Hospital
for Special Care Foundation,
Inc., a non-profit 501(C)(3)
corporation, in New Britain,
Connecticut, (insert here a
percentage of the estate or an
amount in dollars) for its general
uses and purposes.”
GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE
Gifts of real estate, such as a
piece of land, a house, a farm
or commercial property are
considered for donation on a
case by case basis. In most cases,
the Foundation will sell the
property and use the proceeds
to benefit those we serve. The
appreciated value of the real estate
is not generally subject to federal
capital gains tax and a charitable
deduction may be claimed.
GIFTS OF PERSONAL
PROPERTY
Gifts of tangible personal
property, such as artwork, jewelry,
and antiques are considered on a
case by case basis.
