HULLFC The18thMan CONETNTS contents SUNDAY 2O JANUARY, KO 2PM HULL FC v Hull Kingston Rovers 3 Peter Gentle Good afternoon and welcome back to the KC Stadium for this afternoon’s pre-season friendly against Hull KR. I use the word “friendly” but we are expecting a very tough and fiercely contested game, just as it always is when we play in a Hull derby. One of the first things I learned when I joined Hull FC was just how important these matches are to the fans and while today is about us continuing to build towards the start of Super League in a few weeks’ time, it is a game we won’t be taking lightly. I thought we showed that in our first friendly against Castleford Tigers last weekend and it was a good start to the year for us, especially being able to give Kirk Yeaman a win in his testimonial fixture. From the squad’s point of view, we wanted to give every player a run out in that game, which was why we fielded a separate team in each half, and I think all of the players will have benefited from blowing a few cobwebs away and getting a few miles into their legs. I was excited about a few of the things we saw out there last week too. I’m under no illusions, and there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but the nucleus of a very good side was there. We could have played with a little bit more patience at times, but I was very impressed with the performance by the full squad, and that’s the most pleasing thing. HEADCOACH The more successful clubs have depth to their squads and that’s an area where we targeted for improvement this year. We’re in a good, healthy position at the moment and all the debutants from last year are all expecting to play now. HULLFC O4 The18thMan There’s no point blooding them if you aren’t going to use them, so there is some very healthy competition for places right now. Without getting too ahead of ourselves, there may be one or two opportunities during the season to rest a few players carrying a niggling injury, whereas last year we had to play everybody right the way through because of our lack of depth at times. It can be a long season when you’re doing that, but that’s the luxury of having a big squad. While we’re healthy at the moment, that will change at some point in the future and it’s important to be able to have players to bring in. We’re in much better shape to be able to cope with any injuries this year and I’ve got every confidence in the players coming in. We’ve got 28 first-graders running around with us and that’s the difference between the clubs that want to be at the top and the ones that are. We’re bridging that gap and the young fellas have trained the house down in the off season. Everybody has been working really hard, but the young blokes have been exceptional in the way they’ve handled themselves. I’ve got a tough decision on my hands to come up with a 17 each week and I don’t think our team for round one against Leeds will be the same as what it is in round four, five or six. We probably won’t get it right from the start, but our strength is that we’ve got number and options to play with this time around. It’s been hard enough selecting a squad for today’s match as everybody was understandably eager to play, but we’ve got the York game coming up next week too and some players will be playing in that out of necessity, while a few others have put their hand up and requested to play in that game. It is a bit of a tight turnaround with us playing York on the Sunday and then Leeds on the Friday night, so we’ll be smart on how we select that side, but it will form another part of our preparations as a squad. First of all, we have to see how we come through today’s match against Hull KR and hopefully we can build on some of the things we did well last week and improve in one or two other areas. Enjoy the game, Peter HULLFC The18thMan HEADCOACH But it’s good to be back and we are all very excited about getting underway again. If I’m honest, we’ve been a bit impatient to get started but we’ve had a terrific off season, we really have, and we’ve given ourselves a really good platform to work from now. O5 Adam Pearson We’ve already played our opening preseason friendly against Castleford Tigers and it was a positive first performance from all concerned, in a game to celebrate Kirk Yeaman’s contribution to the club. I know Kirk was delighted with the support he received on the day and it was clear how much the day meant to him and his family. The picture splashed on the front of this week’s papers really summed it up for me, with Kirk and his two children Dylan and Honey-Mae, and it was a day he deserved. Our focus though remains on 2013 and our aim is a simple one. We want Hull FC back where they belong, as a major influence within the domestic competitions challenging season after season in the Super League and Challenge Cup. Getting there is not quite so simple. It will take hard work, endeavour, courage and an underlying passion from everyone from players to coaches and staff to supporters. Everyone has a part to play in taking this club back to where it belongs. That has been my principal aim and focus since taking over the club in 2011 and we continue to set high levels of attainment across the club to ensure we can meet those expectations and targets over the coming years. More recently though, our investment has been directly on the field in securing a number of new signings for 2013 as we continue our programme in nurturing a squad we feel is capable of challenging for honours. BEERHOUSESELFDRIVE Last season was a positive step forward for us, with our best finish in the competition for a number of years and the aim is to continue that progress with a push towards a top four finish in 2013. To help us do that, we have recruited seven new signings and promoted four players from our academy, with the most notable new face being that of Gareth Ellis. HULLFC O6 The18thMan It has quickly become apparent why Gareth is held in such high regard as one of the game’s leading players and a formidable force in the world’s best competition, the NRL, before returning to England. He brings quality and leadership on and off the field and is an example for all to follow. Add to that the quality of fellow new signings like Daniel Holdsworth, Shannon McDonnell and young England prospect Joe Arundel, and we have added real depth to an already talented squad and one that looks the most competitive in recent times. The latter signing of Arundel also epitomises our aim over the coming years to try and deliver a group of players that has a core nucleus of home grown or English talent. Already we have a number of players that are around the national setup, be it the Elite squad or Knights and we’ll be looking to continue that. We have players like Tom Briscoe, Danny Houghton and Danny Tickle leading the way, but with some encouraging talents like Liam Watts, Joe Arundel and Jason Crookes hot on their heels, not to mention England Academy graduates like James Cunningham and Ben Crooks. The future is a bright one for Hull FC and neither the staff at the club, nor I, will rest until we achieve the goals we have set ourselves. There is only one place this club should be, with an incredible stadium and even better fan base, and that is the top of Super League. I’d like to thank supporters for their passion and commitment to the club, as well as their patience as we take the club forward step by step and hopefully it won’t be too long before we’re giving them something to really cheer about. The Grand Final and the Challenge Cup Final are the targets, they’re the benchmark and that is what we’ll be working towards in 2013. It’s time to believe, Best Wishes, Adam HULLFC The18thMan ADAMPEARSON Another new season is already underway and it only seems like five minutes since I was last penning a few notes for The 18th Man. Yet chipping in with a one-liner of his own to the mirth of those around him before turning back to more serious matters, the off-field demeanour of the former Junior Kangaroo is already shaping up to be everything FC supporters will be hoping to see on the pitch in 2013 – coolness, confidence and more than a little cheek. More promising still, on all matters rugby league – and particularly Hull FC – McDonnell is bursting with a typical Aussie professionalism that sees no word wasted. “Every team wants to play well in the friendlies and set a tone for the more serious matches to come,” he told the club’s official match day programme in response to a question about his preseason aims at his new club. “Yes, it’s important to get an idea of what does and doesn’t work, and make the most of a chance to blood some young talent, but you’re hoping to build something you can take into the first round of Super League. PAGETITLE “The result maybe doesn’t matter, although you always want to win, but a good performance can give you a platform to work from. Confidence is everything in sport and you can build that by playing well in the friendlies, just as you would HULLFC 12 The18thMan by performing well and sticking to your structures in any other game.” On that note, there are some positive early indications for McDonnell and his Hull teammates following last weekend’s 26-6 victory over Castleford Tigers in Kirk Yeaman’s testimonial at the KC Stadium. While understandably erratic at times following a three-month break from the rigours of competitive rugby league, it was a confident display from the Black and Whites as they ran in five tries against their West Yorkshire rivals. McDonnell himself capped a promising debut with a well-taken try under the posts towards the death, as well as providing one of the highlights of the match as he flicked an attempted 40/20 back into the field of play before calmly re-gathering and dancing past three would-be defenders on a jinking run to clear his lines. “I see myself as an attacking full back, but the defensive side of the game is something I pride myself on and I’m always looking to improve,” he says. “I’m my own biggest critic and the biggest pressure is going to come from myself and my own standards, but I’m enjoying my footy and being part of this squad. “It’s been really good so far and I feel very comfortable at the club. Training’s been hard but it’s great to be feeling fit again and the boys have been good with me. I knew a couple of them already and I’ve played against nearly everybody here either last year or back home in Australia, which definitely helps. “I’ve known Pete (Gentle) for a while too, so it’s made it a lot easier fitting in and knowing what I was getting into.” And as for today’s fixture – when McDonnell will switch allegiances to the Black and Whites for the first Hull derby of 2013 – Hull fans will certainly go into the game knowing a bit more about their new No.1. Beginning his first season in the UK with a two-try man of the match performance for Hull KR in last year’s pre-season friendly between the two sides, he laid the foundations for an impressive debut Super League campaign in east Hull that would go on to include a call-up to the Exiles side that took on England in the International Origin in June. “It’s a bit of a compliment to your form and your team’s form to be selected for something like the Exiles, and it’s something I’d love to do again, but right now I just want to worry about Hull FC,” he says. “Recognition like that is always nice, but it definitely comes on the back of a team effort, particularly playing at full back where my job is made so much easier by the work done by the players in front of me. “On the field, I just treat each week like another game that I’ve been playing my whole life and I’m just going to continue playing football to the best of my ability and we’ll see where it takes us.” HULLFC The18thMan SHANNONMCDONNELL PAGETITLE One of seven additions to the Black and Whites squad for 2013, you could be forgiven for expecting the 25-year-old Australian to keep somewhat of a low profile after a cross-city switch from rivals Hull KR on a two-year contract from Super League XVIII. O1 13 The Hull derby: A not so friendly history Club historian Bill Dalton delves into previous pre-season friendlies between the two Hull sides and discovers they have always had a competitive edge. In the natural order of things, a ‘derby’ encounter in any sporting competition has a special significance, particularly for the two sets of supporters who feel the need to claim the bragging rights. This remains the case even in friendly encounters that, in the grand scheme of things, really carry no significance. Supporters of Hull FC and Hull KR are no different. However, each and every season, the statistics are repeated across the city’s media and in the two club’s match day programmes discussing just how many competitive derby matches have been played, and the resulting breakdown of wins, draws and losses there have been for both sides. Some history aficionados even look deeper into where those games where played, the biggest attendances and more recently the Super League record between the two sides. And so on and so forth … HULLFC The18thMan HULLDERBY But what of those “friendly” meetings between the Black and Whites and Red and Whites over the years? 15 A not so friendly history On top of the known 214 previous competitive encounters between the two old famous rivals, many may not have realised just how many so-called friendlies have taken place. Today will in fact, be the 66th such meeting since Rovers were admitted to senior status in the Northern Union back in 1899. They have taken various forms; some have been staged in aid of war charities, many of taken the form of testimonial or benefit matches, as in the case of distinguished Hull servant Richard Horne two years ago. There was also the series of three exhibition matches held between the Airlie Birds and the Robins in Cornwall in 1962 in a bid to extend the appeal of rugby league to those in that region. Most, however, have been plain and simply pre-season friendlies as is the case today, and was the case last year. What is surprising in the latter example, though, is that none took place before the renowned series of Eva Hardaker Memorial Trophy matches from 1960 to 1980. The Hardaker matches, among others, in addition to serving as a season opener, also benefitted local amateur rugby league, while Hull KR were also invited on occasions to contest the Clive Sullivan Trophy in pre-season, although that is now awarded to the winners of one of the Super League fixtures between the two sides. And in the modern era, pre-season friendlies are played out as a genuine hit out before getting down to the business part of the forthcoming campaign. It was not always thus, and certainly in the examples of matches involving such as “All-Stars” teams, there was once a more light-hearted approach to them. Yet, Hull FC versus Hull KR was always one fixture that avoided such a relaxed approach. It has always been a fiercely contested, full-blooded battle and long may that continue. HULLDERBY A friendly? Travis Burns O6 Travis Burns arrives at Hull KR from NRL heavyweights Penrith Panthers with a fearsome reputation. Official Compression Partner of Hull FC. Stock available in-store Equally at home in the halves, at hooker or in the loose forward position, the Australian looks set to occupy the stand-off role for the Robins in 2013 and he could form a deadly combination with skipper Michael Dobson. An aggressive and physical player, he could bring a new dimension to the Red and Whites in Super League XVIII and he certainly appears to be a character who will relish the full-blooded nature of a Hull derby. PAGETITLE W W W. I S C - S P O R T S . C O M . A U HULLFC 20 The18thMan Set to miss today’s match as he continues to serve a lengthy ban picked up in the NRL in the latter stages of last season, Burns will return to action in round 5 and supporters can expect fireworks when he does. But a heavy turnover of players for Super League XVIII - including the loss of Shannon McDonnell and Ben Galea to the Black and Whites - has seen Sandercock continue the revolution to the east of the city with a youthful look to the Red and Whites in 2013. With the likes of Sean Gleeson and Greg Eden joining a back line already boasting the talent of Kris Welham and Craig Hall, points certainly shouldn’t be hard to come by for a KR side expertly marshalled by half back Michael Dobson and his new partner Travis Burns. The arrival of experienced NRL forwards Cory Paterson and Evarn Tuimavave will also be crucial and if the duo can shore up a leaky Rovers defence - and if KR can avoid losing key players for lengthy periods - the Robins will be confident of regaining a playoff place over the next nine months. HULLFC The18thMan TODAYSVISITORS Star Signing Formerly on the coaching staff at Newcastle Knights, the new boss arrived in the UK with a reputation for bringing through young talent and he immediately set to work developing a new-look Robins only to be hampered by inconsistency and injuries to crucial players at key times. 21 ’I l tell the new guys just what a derby means, says Welham TODAYSVISITORS Behind Enemy Lines Kris Welham may not be a veteran in terms of his age, but the talented Hull KR back is fast becoming a veteran when it comes to playing in derby games. HULLFC 22 The18thMan He has plenty of experience when it comes to dealing with trials and tribulations of a clash with the ‘old enemy’ and will be passing that on to some of his newer team-mates before the two sides take to the pitch this afternoon. “We’ll be expecting the usual,” he said with a big grin. “Obviously coaches and players talk about working on structures and systems and that’ll be the case, but I’m sure there’ll also be that feistiness in the game as well. “From our point of view, it’s really about putting a few things right from last weekend and building on what we did against Wigan. “Obviously we’ll have a few players who haven’t played in a derby before and might not know just how much it means to everyone, especially the supporters and local lads like myself. “I’ll be going around before the game and talking things up to some of the boys.” Making his return from a broken ankle in his side’s win over Wigan Warriors last week, there will be few players on the pitch this afternoon looking forward to the contest quite as much as Welham. O3 An England Knights international, many have tipped the centre as a possible candidate for Steve McNamara’s World Cup squad later this year and he cemented his senior status in the KR squad when chosen as vice-captain for 2013 by head coach Craig Sandercock in pre-season. Forming part of a devastating partnership with skipper Michael Dobson on the Robin’s left flank, he will be one to watch for the Black and Whites’ defence this afternoon. And today will also once again see Welham meet his old adversary, Kirk Yeaman, and the 25-year-old is keen to get the better of him, and Hull FC. “I’ve spoken to Kirk a couple of times but we’ve not mentioned today’s game,” he continued. “We’re both from Hull and know what the derby means to people so it’s always good to square off against each other. “There are bragging rights at stake but that’s mainly for the supporters, rather than the players. Obviously we want to win – we want to win every game we play – but there are no Super League points up for grabs today and it’s more about getting things right ahead of the big kick-off in a couple of weeks’ time. “If we can do that, win the game and send our fans away happy, that’d be perfect for us.” HULLFC The18thMan TODAYSVISITORS Kris Welham The 18th Man chats to Hull KR centre Kris Welham ahead of his side’s derby clash with the Black and Whites this afternoon. 23 with Chris Chester Having worn both the Black and White and the Red and White in a derby, the Robins’ assistant coach is a veteran of occasions like today and knows first-hand that no quarter is asked, or given, when the two clubs go to battle. “In my first derby I copped a knee in the side of the head from Paul Fletcher and got knocked unconscious so I don’t actually remember any of it,” he said. “Then in 2003 we had a pre-season friendly and Garreth Carvell got taken out off the ball by Jimmy Walker. I went after him for the five minutes that followed and we ended up exchanging blows which sparked a big brawl!” XFILES Having spent five years here at the KC with Hull FC, Chester crossed the ‘great divide’ at the end of the 2006 season and HULLFC 24 The18thMan has since enjoyed derby success with the Robins, both as a player and a coach. “My favourite derby was the play-off game at the KC Stadium back in 2010,” he continued. “Everything we’d planned came off, including a couple of set-plays which we’d worked on all week, and it’s always satisfying when that happens. “Last season’s win at the Magic Weekend was also pretty special too. We didn’t play particularly well that day, but the way the game finished was unbelievable and it’s always nice to get one over your arch rivals in a derby. “Even when I watch it now, not once did I think David Hodgson was going to score that try! But he did, and it was a day that I’ll remember for a long time, as will all of our supporters.” Fans of both clubs in Hull will always tell you that Rovers versus Hull FC is the only real derby in the world of rugby league and that’s something that Chester concurs with. “I’ve played in quite a few different derbies, Saints versus Wigan and Halifax versus Bradford. But there’s only one true derby, and that’s Hull KR v Hull FC. It’s always a great occasion with a big crowd and it doesn’t get any better than that. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have played on both sides of the fence as it were and I’ve got some really happy memories from the games. I still get on really well with the likes of Richard Horne and Kirk Yeaman at Hull FC and enjoyed the derbies I played in when I was there. On the other side of the coin, I’ve also enjoyed the derbies that I’ve been involved in, both as a player and an assistant coach, with Rovers. “No game is a friendly. All of our players go out there busting a gut and trying to make sure that they’re in Sandy’s (Craig Sandercock) plans for the following week. There’s definitely no such thing as a friendly derby and this afternoon will show that.” HULLFC The18thMan XFILES He may not have been born and bred in Hull, but Chris Chester knows just how important and intense a derby is. 25 Peter Gentle’s men drew twice in Super League XVII as they shared the spoils with Warrington and St Helens. 4.33 17 25.11 39 116 189 214 v3Hull KR Rovers were one of five clubs to have three players sin binned in 2012. Former Thunder forward Steve Smillie had also been linked with a possible return after being axed earlier in the season. Dean Sampson WIN Tickets for Hull City v York City at the KC Stadium Sampson deal ended by injury A POTENTIALLY career threatening injury has scuppered Hull KR’s bid to land former Great Britain and England prop Dean Sampson. The 35-year-old Castleford ‘enforcer’ had agreed terms, been down to the club earlier this week to meet the board and was set to put pen to paper subject to a medical. And then fate stepped in. Tests, carried out in West Yorkshire, revealed back damage which at this moment in time led the experts to say they did not think the teak-tough prop could play a full season and the injury could even stop him playing full stop. The damage was probably caused the week before Christmas when Sampson cheated death in a road accident. His car skidded on black ice near Castleford and went under the front of a 32-ton quarry lorry. “The car was a write off and I just walked away but By CHRIS LEAK ROVERS REPORTER obviously I damaged my back which has been damaged a few times during my career,” said Sampson. But both club and player have agreed to give the injury the two-to-four-week period it needs to settle down and then he will have another medical in Hull. If he passes that and feels he can manage another season he will sign for the club. But Sampson also realises the club needs to sign players, and if they step in for someone else in the meantime he fully accepts he will have missed his chance. The man who brokered the deal, high-performance sports consultant Nick Halafihi, said: “This really is a sickener. Having been a part of a few derby clashes between St Helens and Wigan I have had a good grounding. They were pretty intense, no matter what the occasion. Still, this will be an experience and this game will give the majority of players an opportunity to sample these special occasions. For our players it will be a totally new experience because none of the team have tasted derby football at this level before. I am sure our fans will also relish a game against Rovers and I would expect plenty of support for the players and there to be quite an atmosphere. From a playing point of view this game does come a little early in our preparations just after the Christmas and New Year break. With the weather we haven’t had much chance to get out on the field and have had only one outdoor training session so far. However, that is how it goes and we just have to get on with it. What the game will provide us with is a guide to how our pre-season training programme is going. Before we go away to Spain next week for a week it will be good to know just where we’re at and what areas we might need to concentrate on while we are away. I am sure the game will be intense, nobody plays at half pace because the game doesn’t allow you to do that. It is not like soccer. Rugby is a physical game and to hold back can be more dangerous than going flat out. What I am look for is another step towards reaching our goals in time for the start of the Challenge Cup and Super League programmes. The cup is four weeks away and this is a good opportunity to evaluate things. I will be looking for a good team and individual performance and from a players’ point of view having a good game doesn’t necessarily mean scoring three tries or making 40 tackles – there are many more indicators of performance than that. But Aston showed as much fight in his hospital bed as he shows spirit on the pitch and he started his long haul back to fitness. Gradually his senses, damaged in the attack, returned and amazingly as last year progressed Aston was told by the specialists there was no medical reason why he could not play rugby league again. Spurred on by that knowledge he toyed with the idea of being fit for Rovers play-off campaign, but then decided it might be better to wait for this coming season. Seeing his name pencilled in for the derby game marks a dream for Aston. “I always hoped to come back, and to do it in this game makes it a bit special. I have played in derby games before, but always for Hull against Rovers. This is the first time I have turned out for Rovers against Hull. “I am really looking forward to it. From a fitness point of view everything is OK, except that I’ve lost my sense of smell, but that’s not always a handicap on Craven Park on a wet afternoon,” said Aston. He said the specialists had told him while there was no problem about his fitness to play they had said there might be psychological problems. “But that was down to me, and I’ve really had no trouble at all in that department. I wanted to play again right from the start,” he said. Last’s issues are different. Underdogs have habit of coming good View from the terraces by JOHN HOLMES I AM sure a lot of FC fans won’t see the point of this game. They’ll expect us to win by a country mile. You would expect Hull to win, and win comfortably, but over the years I have seen more than a few upsets. The underdogs have often come up and defied the odds and teams who wouldn’t have put your mate’s wage packet on winning have won. I can remember a few games like that, the Floodlit Trophy final comes to mind as one. Hull weren’t given a chance, even though they were at home. Yet on the night Rovers weren’t in it and FC won the game. Another game comes to mind at Craven Park where FC went into the east part of the city with a real rag, tag by JASON SMITH and bobtail side. No matter what the game, pride is at stake and neither side, especially their fans, want to see their side lose. Anybody who thinks that these games don’t matter are fooling themselves and they had better think again, because they certainly do. These ‘friendly’ games are no different and they have produced some pretty intense affairs, F prepared. Playing Rovers is a good start in our preparations and then with the Halifax game it will put us in a better position than we were. Tomorrow gives everyone a good chance to blow a few cobwebs away after the break and get used to playing again. Although we have trained well and worked hard in training the one thing you can’t get is match fitness – you only get that by playing. You need to tackle and be tackled and get the brain working in match conditions. No matter what you do in training it is never the same. This should be a good work out for us before we go to Spain where we can, because of the weather, concentrate on game matters. especially in the 80s when the two clubs were flying high. The word friendly took on an entirely new meaning and in the end coaches Arthur Bunting (Hull) and Roger Millward (Rovers) had to call an end to them because too many players were getting carried off injured. One notable injury was to Rovers scrum-half Paul Harkin, who missed nearly half a season after such a game. Players started to get a little carried away and the word competitive took on a new meaning. V p T s a sk d to S u fo c c h m y Hopefully, that will not happen tomorrow in what will be the first meeting between these two teams for five years. It is a great shame our two sides haven’t met for that long and hopefully tomorrow will see the return of the derby clashes on a regular basis. Rugby league needs Hull and Rovers fighting it out between themselves and the city also needs the rivalry. When the two sides were flying high, the atmosphere in the city was electric and we need that back again. Here’s what he had to say. scene From Jack Carter: Who is the best opposite number you’ve come up against? Probably Lote Tuqiri. I played against him when he first came back to rugby league and he’s such a good player. He’s massive for a winger too. From Steve Binns: Which Hull FC player likes to play jokes on their teammates? Definitely Mint (Danny Houghton). He’s always up to something and you have to keep a close eye on him. From @jkhfc: What do you do in your spare time outside of rugby and what’s the best stadium that you’ve played at? Away from the game, I go fishing and I’ve just started going shooting too. Jack got me into it and we spend quite a bit of time doing that now. The best stadium would either be Aami Park in Melbourne or Wembley. They’re both unbelievable. From @lnurden96: What do you like to do before and after a game Tom? I just try to relax before a game. I’m not one of those players who lets themselves get really wound up beforehand. I just watch TV or play on my Xbox and try to chill out. After a game, I’ll just go out for something to eat and unwind, but I actually prefer playing on a Friday night as I’m not rushing around as much before a game. My favourite player growing up was Robbie Paul. I used to go to Odsal to watch him play for Bradford and he was a class player. My ambitions for the future are to win some silverware with Hull FC and this year I want to play against the Exiles again and in the World Cup for England. I think we’ve got a good chance. We’ve not spoken about any goals or anything like that, but obviously you’re aiming to win it. I think the last few games have shown that we’ve got some good young players coming through and there’s depth for the first time in a long while. With the boys who play in Australia still to come back into the side, I think we’ll be quite strong. @ Get involved. Joe Arundel The 18th Man and Hull FC Live team up as part of a new series in the match day programme. Read the thoughts of new signing Joe Arundel below, with the full interview coming soon on the club’s exclusive subscription service. Joe Arundel walked out of the KC Stadium last weekend with a huge smile on his face. Making a return to action after a torrid spell on the sidelines last season, Hull FC’s new signing enjoyed a winning start to 2013 and a promising debut at the Black and Whites. The fact his side’s 26-6 victory came over his former club Castleford Tigers made it all the sweeter but for the 20-year-old centre, just walking out onto the field was a moment to savour. “I think my debut went pretty well considering I haven’t played for nine months because of my shoulder injury. I was a bit nervous with not playing for so long and with it being against my old team and my debut for Hull FC,” he said. “I’m glad to get it out the way and finally get back playing. It’s been a long time and now I just want to improve each game and get back to where I used to be.” Watching on from the sidelines as a youthful Hull side went toe-totoe with his former Tigers teammates in the opening 40 minutes, Arundel was one of 13 more experienced players to take to the field at half-time last weekend as head coach Peter Gentle rotated his squad. Admitting it was a unique situation in his career so far, Arundel says it was an enjoyable start to life at his new club – despite having what would have been a debut try chalked off in the second half. “It probably settled my nerves a little bit coming on at half time, but I would have rather started and played a full game,” he said. “It was weird warming up at half time but I think all the new signings were in the same boat and we were all pretty nervous, except for the more experienced guys. “It would have been nice to get that try, but Azza (Aaron Heremaia) was offside and there’ll be plenty more to come hopefully!” And as for his other ambitions during a four-year contract with the Black and Whites, Arundel is pulling no punches. FIVEMINUTESWITH “I’m hoping to become the best player I can be and hopefully represent the full England team. That’s something I really want to do,” he says. “Playing with the likes of Kirk Yeaman, I can learn off him and playing at a big club with some top players will hopefully really help me to do that.” HULLFC 34 The18thMan New Faces New Season New Hull FC Live - NEW! He’s convinced it looks good, so to all you fans out there, I’d start getting a little bit worried if I were you about the fact we have a blind loose forward in the team. Other news that I can report is that Tom Lineham’s been practising his Matt Gidley flick. I’ve been watching him do it at training, but judging by his pass into touch at the weekend, he still needs to do a fair bit of work! There’s a really good spirit in the camp at the moment though and everybody is getting on well. The new lads have settled in really quickly and there’s a good bit of banter flying around at training when we have the breath to speak! PAGETITLE m Yea o We’ve been pushed hard in pre-season by the coaching staff and it’s been tough, but we’re all excited that the season is about to start, although I’m gutted to be missing out against Hull KR this weekend. HULLFC 36 The18thMan Luckily, I was still able to make it to the warm weather training camp in Tenerife and we had a really good week over there. We got a lot of work done on our new structures and it was also a good chance to spend a bit more time together off the field. WESTE E O B There was a minor discretion in Tenerife with Kirk Yeaman’s toilet though. A few of the lads kept sneaking into his room while he was training and not flushing it after they were done. This is a family programme so I won’t go into the details, but it’s quite warm over there and they closed all the windows and doors too, so it wasn’t a nice smell. Yeamo had a few suspicions about who was behind it, but without any proof he just wandered around in a rage all week. A few of the lads went up to him before we came home and admitted it was them, but he still didn’t believe them! He was convinced it was Josh Bowden! Poor little Nicko (Danny Nicklas) got caught on camera though so he couldn’t deny it, but I don’t know what Josh did to take the blame. He’s probably just an easy target, but Josh got Yeamo back with a bit of banter about the naff tattoos on his back. There’s a few bad tattoos in the camp at the minute with Yeamo’s and Nicko’s, so Tom Briscoe’s new one has gone under the radar a little bit and it’s not too bad to be fair to him. He just rolled up at training and had a bit of bright ink to show us, but he says it’s only half finished at the minute. Personally, I think that means he crawled off the table half way through because of the pain, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll have more to report on that one in my next column in a few weeks. I’ll see you all then. HULLFC The18thMan WATTSUP It’s strange because Westy was getting into Jamie Foster for weeks on end last year about his hair, but he’s taken a leaf out of Jamie’s book and copied him! STIN B JU I There’s a serious mood in the camp at the minute as you’d expect with the season just around the corner, but Joe Westerman’s new haircut has caused a bit of a stir. He’s gone for a Justin Bieber look with a bit of a swish to the side. E M J This is it, I’ve finally been given my own column! I’ll be penning something every week to name and shame some of the lads, and let you know about some of the best bits from behind the scenes here at Hull FC. ER R Watts Up? Watts Up? AN 37 Sponsored by We’re prepared for 2O13, says Last Hull FC’s head of youth Andy Last discusses some important changes to the academy set-up in Super League and says the Black and Whites are well prepared for 2013. There were few prouder people at the KC Stadium last weekend than Andy Last. Watching on from the sidelines as Hull took on Castleford Tigers, the club’s head of youth saw a young and inexperienced FC side seize the chance to impress against their near full-strength opponents. “We’ve put a really strong emphasis at the club on putting together a pathway for young players to come through the ranks and I think we started to see the results of that last weekend,” Last told The 18th Man after the 26-6 victory which saw a number of home-grown players come to the fore. “The team in the first half was made up largely of players who have come through our system and they more than held their own against a first grade Castleford team. “To play against the likes of Rangi Chase will have been great experience for them and I think they showed the future of the club is in good hands.” But while Last and his coaching staff can reflect on a job well done with the youthful element of Hull’s first team squad in 2013, the former Black and Whites hooker knows the hard work has only just begun for the club’s younger talent. Developing future FC stars 38 With the old 15s, 16s, 18s and 20s age groups scrapped in favour of an under16s and an under-19s competition this season, Last says it has been a challenging few months. “We were able to put some plans in place but it was a very difficult time. We had four teams last year and we’ve had to whittle that down to two. It’s meant we had to let some people go and we’ve had some disappointed players, parents and staff, which is never easy,” he said. “We’ve made the most of an unfortunate situation though and the two squads have come together really well in training during the off season. They’re well prepared and they’re ready to go.” The changes will see last year’s hugely successful under-15s side form the more experienced element of the new-look under-16s, while a number of additional players from the year below have also been recruited by the Black and Whites. With four England internationals on the books at this age level, Last says there is some exciting young talent pushing through. “The calibre of players we have on board with us is testimony to the programme we have in place now. There will be a good core of players in their second year on scholarship with us, but we are also really happy with the new players we have,” he added. “We’ve managed to get the majority of kids in Hull who we felt were of the right calibre to play at this level, so we have a really exciting crop of players on the books at the moment.” As for the under-19s, half of the squad of 26 players have made the step up from the club’s under-16s last year – a side which lost just once in 2012. Combining with their new teammates from last season’s under-18s, Last admits it will be a tough challenge for his young charges but one he is confident will aid their development in the long run. “The 16s last year was a really good age group for us and we recruited heavily from that for the new under-19s team,” he said. “It means we’re going to be very young next year in the under-19s competition and that presents problems in that we’ll be giving away a bit of size and experience, but in the long-term we are confident the players will really develop from the challenge. “There’s some real quality players in there with a very good culture and work ethic, so while it will test them physically and mentally, we are confident they will pull through as better players.” HULL F.C. - SCHOLARSHIP UNDER 16’S FIXTURES 2013 MARCH Thursday 7 March Saturday 30 March APRIL Saturday 20 April MAY Saturday 4 May Saturday 25 May JUNE Saturday 15 June JULY Saturday 6 July Thursday 25 July Hull K.R. It will start when Castleford Tigers roll into town on Friday, March 8 in a fixture that will take on a Mother’s Day theme, with a range of treats on offer to mum around the ground and in the club’s Circle Restaurant for the game. It was the perfect start to a fixture that would see Hull FC steal a last-minute win against play-off rivals Huddersfield Giants during an emotional afternoon to mark Armed Forces Weekend and celebrate the club’s partnership with its charity of the year, Help for Heroes. Gentle’s men will then host rivals Hull KR at the KC Stadium on Good Friday in a fixture that will offer supporters bags of additional pre-match entertainment in West Park, while the following week there will be some bargain prices on tickets for the club’s junior supporters as part of a family theme scheduled for the clash with Catalan Dragons on Sunday, April 7. It also happened to be one of the most iconic moments of 2012 for Black and Whites supporters. Fast forward six months and plans are already underway behind the scenes at Hull FC to ensure 2013 offers memories as equally stirring during a season that is tipped to be one of the club’s most exciting in Super League to date. With seven new signings arriving to bolster Peter Gentle’s squad for the new campaign, hopes are high the Airlie Birds can build on a first play-off victory in five years last season and repeat an impressive home record that saw them lose just once on their own turf in the competition in 2012. The Black and Whites will then welcome Wigan Warriors to East Yorkshire later that month in a repeat of last season’s St George’s Day fixture, while the beginning of July will then see Gentle’s men take on Wakefield in front of the Sky Sports cameras on a Monday night with the game taking on an Armed Forces theme. But while fans will be hoping the arrival of the likes of England international Gareth Ellis and former Canterbury Bulldogs half back Daniel Holdsworth will lead to plenty of entertainment out on the field for the Old Faithful this season, there will be just as much going on off the pitch to get excited about. With further details for all fixtures due to be confirmed on www.hullfc. com in due course, the regular rounds of Super League will then finish on a high against St Helens on Friday, September 6, with the club set to repeat last year’s hugely popular Heritage and Memorial Weekend. Supported by St Stephen’s shopping centre, the scheme sees the Hull FC Foundation use the power of sport to support young people through their education via an eight-week course based around literacy and numeracy development. “None of it could have been achieved without the help of St Stephen’s and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their continued support of this project.” Those taking part are encouraged to become healthier through fitness testing, diet analysis and improved lifestyle choices, while participants also complete the Rugby League Leaders course as part of the project. Speaking to The 18th Man, Richard Munson, Hull FC’s head of strategic partnerships, said, “We are delighted with the results of the project so far and we are looking forward to working with even more schools during 2013. have also included topics such as budgeting, finance and interview skills. Danny Tickle’s most memorable match came in front of 82,821 people at the iconic Wembley Stadium in 2008. It was, of course, Hull FC’s 28-16 defeat to St Helens in the Challenge Cup final – the third major final of his career after experiencing cup and Grand Final heartache with Wigan. Yet despite once again ending up on the losing side with the Black and Whites, that hot Saturday afternoon in August remains a cherished memory for Tickle and one of the highlights of his illustrious career. “Maybe favourite game is the wrong way to describe it, but that Challenge Cup final with Hull was one match I’ll not forget,” said Tickle, who slotted two touchline conversions in the match. “I remember watching the cup finals as a kid at Wembley and never had the chance to go down and see it. For it to be my first visit, and at the new Wembley as well, was a proud moment and while it was disappointing to be on the losing side, to get the chance to play there was something I’ll always cherish.” Favourite teammate: Lynchy, because he always makes me a good coffee! Favourite animal: A dog! Favourite colour: Black Favourite in another spplaoyer Ronnie O’Sul ivrt: an The game itself saw the Black and Whites travel to the capital to take on a St Helens side that entered the game as red hot favourites having not been beaten in the competition since a defeat to Hull at the semi-final stage three years before. Trailing 10-0 at half time, a Kirk Yeaman double midway through the second period had the Old Faithful dreaming of memorable upset, only for Saints to respond with a late surge that would see them pick up the trophy for the third consecutive year. Gareth Raynor scored a late consolation but there would be no repeat of Hull’s memorable triumph in Cardiff in 2005 as their cup dreams came to a halt at the final hurdle. “The game just turned on its head so quickly and that’s what can happen in rugby. We took the lead and couldn’t hang on to it, but the chance to go down there with my family was a special day. “Of course, it would have been better if we’d won, but I’d like to think that one day I’ll be able to look back on a final where I’ve come out on the winning side.” HULLFC 52 The18thMan HULLFC The18thMan MYFavourites JUNIORAIRLIEBIRDKIDSCLUB “I remember we got a couple of tries to take the lead, but they went over again in the corner not long after and then Jon Wilkin charged a kick down to score under the posts,” Tickle recalls. 53 HULL FC NOTICEBOARD HULLFC 54 The18thMan HULLFC The18thMan NOTICEBOARD NOTICEBOARD If you have a message, announcement, event, birthday or favourite picture you’d like pinning up on the Hull FC Noticeboard, send them in today. More than 450 tickets were snapped up by fans for the event, while hundreds more tuned in from home HULLFC 56 The18thMan via a free live stream on www.hullfc. com ahead of the new Super League season. With owner Adam Pearson, head coach Peter Gentle and director of rugby Shaun McRae also on the panel, there were a range of topics up for discussion on the night. The highlights included reaction to the club’s 26-6 victory over Castleford on Sunday, comparisons between Super League and the NRL and the progression of the club’s talented young stars through to the first team. The Black and Whites and FC Voices have once again planned to host another forum during 2013, with more details set to be announced on www. hullfc.com in due course. There was also various club mementos given to the association for their sponsorships over the years such as and signed balls and shirts, pens, pencils, badges and paper weigts, we well as photos recording the many different shirt designs since the club’s inception. Of course, supporters also kindly provided mementos from the last game at The Boulevard in 2002 while one Vice President contributed a family photo album with pictures relating to the 1985 Cup Final at Wembley against Wigan when she took her three-month-old son to the fixture. It also showed pictures of the establishing of the 1985 Society and the first draw of the club’s inaugural lottery which was a forerunner of today’s Lucky13 scheme. However, the highlight of the exhibit was a great surprise, with the Vice Presidents allowed to display a 1920s Hull FC ledger recording the Share Issue of the club at that time. Many of the visitors were interested in the ledger, and one visitor actually found the details of a share issue to his father. All in all, it was a great event enjoyed by many visitors and exhibitors alike. The enjoyment was much improved by the musical talents of one Sammy Lloyd, who came over from Castleford to entertain us with his unique style of ukele playing, and the association would like to thank the many contributors for making it an interesting and eventful day. HULLFC The18thMan VICEPRESIDENTSASSOCIATION FANS TUNE IN TO FIRST FORUM OF 2O13 In early September, the Vice Presidents took part in the Hull FC Heritage Day at the KC Stadium in an event that proved so popular, it looks set to return once again in 2013. Well attended by Black and Whites supporters, there were hundreds of items on display across a weekend centred around the home fixture against Castleford Tigers in the final round of Super League. A fitting way to celebrate the Vice Presidents’ 35th anniversary of supporting Hull FC, it saw a range of memorabilia showcased including photographs, old replica shirts and programmes, with one example dating back to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley during the 1950s. Along with various ties, shirts and badges worn by the VPs over the years, other highlights included a variety of rugby league magazines from over the years - many with articles about the club and its players - while there were also highly valued contributions from former players. One of the more unusual items on display was a cheque provided by ex-forward Richard Wilson for the princely sum of £7.50 for his appearance in an end of season game, while former Hull academy starlet Jez Cassidy lent his under 21s Great Britain shirt for the exhibition. 57 ED S xSn Ale spo 31 To an n Ry spo 32 To ilbe rforce College c ep 64 ED e Pres idents orn ED ngin eers Ltd le BE Ti ck BY D y nn R DaSPONSO 16 r ha R RiScPONSO 25 LR ToPmONSO 29 ie OR Ja m NS PO n ro R Aa NSO 33 SPO ice dH BY V 12 tus so re r, c en all 30 4 9 YM lect rical Solutions ley JE O’ Me B ED Grou p Se y BY m KR our L rk R Ma NSO 08 SPO on a Ma niel a rtin nd Gedd es El lis BY D rim sworth e Pr ocessors old Mc h Do @ e 6th nnell S t.
