Weddings in A registration Office
Each year over 7000 couples get married in Essex which
makes it one of the most popular wedding destinations in
England. Increasingly a civil ceremony is the preferred choice
with 70% of couples now opting for this type of ceremony.
With a civil ceremony in mind, there is the choice of
Registration Offices or Approved Venues for the important day.
In 2010/11, 1751 couples chose a Registration Office wedding.
It may surprise you to learn that the most popular civil
ceremony location in the whole of Essex is The Roman Rooms
in Colchester Registration Office, where more than 440
couples ‘tie the knot’ each year. For more information on the
ceremony rooms visit www.celebrateinessex.co.uk
You may wish to marry in the area where you and your partner
live, but you don’t have to. You can choose to marry in any
Register Office in England or Wales, as well as in Approved
Venues. With so much choice, where do you begin? Fortunately,
Essex Registration Offices have something for everyone.
If you’re planning a simple wedding, we have attractive,
contemporary rooms. If you’re looking for something more
traditional, we’ve got historic buildings with a wealth of character.
If you want a stylish background to your wedding, you’ll find
something to match your taste. Many of our offices have their
own gardens for photography, while others are close to attractive
public parks or gardens that are favourites with wedding
photographers.
Register Offices
When you’re planning your special day, you can now choose
from a variety of options for your wedding ceremony. The Essex
Register Office is located in Brentwood in a converted cottage on
the edge of Shenfield Common. The ceremony room is tastefully
decorated and can accommodate 30 guests.
Former Register Office ceremony rooms
Seven former Register Office ceremony rooms are now available to
couples for wedding ceremonies. These can be found in Braintree
(John Ray House), Benfleet (The Registration Suite), Chelmsford
(The Chelmer Rooms), Colchester (The Roman Rooms), Epping
(The Victoria Suite), Harlow (The Watergarden Suite) and Saffron
Walden (The Civic Suite). Each venue has a character of its own,
but they all share the same commitment - to make your wedding
an occasion to remember.
5
Most important of all, you’ll be dealing with people who know
how to make your day really special. The staff of the Essex
Registration Service pride themselves on making each wedding a
unique experience to treasure.
Telephone any of our offices and talk about the ceremony, your
preferred choice of music, flowers and the photography. Or
simply go and see for yourself. You’ll find the staff friendly and
approachable and they’ll do their best to make your wedding day
relaxed and enjoyable for everyone. For your own peace of mind,
please contact us as soon as possible. That way, you’re more likely
to get the location you really want.
All our offices give you the opportunity to make a provisional
booking for your wedding up to 24 months in advance. The
earliest you can legally enter your official notice of marriage is 12
months in advance of the wedding. A provisional booking can be
made simply by telephoning, calling at the office of your choice or
by written application.

A perfect day
Rebecca and Steve
Williams were
married at Braintree
Registration Office
on 31st August 2010.
This is their story…
Where did you meet?
We met through friends on an evening out. We had known
each other for 5 years before we started dating.
Who proposed to whom?
Steven proposed. We went for a day out to Colchester and
took a walk to the castle park. It was a lovely spring day. We
were surrounded by beautiful daffodils the scene was perfect.
It was a complete surprise. It was very romantic!
Why did you choose a Registration Office
in preference to an Approved Venue?
We chose a Registration Office because wanted a low key but
intimate ceremony.
Why did you choose Braintree Registration Office?
We live in Braintree and we wanted to get married locally.
The ceremony room has a lovely vaulted ceiling with ornate
white plasterwork against a dark blue background, which
looked stunning - it was just what we wanted. We both
thought it was tasteful. Also, the room was just right for the
number of guests we needed to accommodate. The lovely
gardens outside were a bonus for us - a great place to have
our photographs taken.
Give an overview of the ceremony
The ceremony was very intimate and everything we wanted.
Did you have any readings? What did you choose and why?
Yes. We had Pam Ayres “Yes I’ll marry you” it was a light
hearted and comical poem that we fell in love with as soon as
we read it.
How many people attended the ceremony?
We had 65 guests.
Where did you have your reception?
We had our wedding reception at the White Hart Hotel in
Braintree.
Sum up your wedding in one word!
Perfect!!!!

When it comes to Weddings ‘The Only Way Is Essex’
Where are the Approved Venues wedding ‘hotspots’ in Essex?
The Marriage Act 1994 enabled couples to marry in what are
commonly known as ‘Approved Venues’ which are specifically
licensed by local authorities for civil ceremony purposes.
Previously, couples had to choose between a Church and a
Register Office wedding.
Some of the most popular ceremony venues in Essex include:
The increase in popularity of weddings in ‘Approved Venues’
has been staggering. There are now over 140 such venues in
the County. In 2010/11, 47% of all ceremonies took place at
such venues. When you see the range and quality of ‘Approved
Venues’ in Essex it is no surprise that this type of civil ceremony
has become the preferred choice.
LEEz PRIORY
A stunning Tudor mansion set in the heart of Essex was awarded
The Wedding Ideas Magazine ‘Best Wedding Venue’ in 2007

essex Approved Venues: A perfect day
Lynsey and Simon King were married at Boreham House
on Thursday 26th May 2011. This is their story…
Where did you meet?
Simon and I met on Valentines Day 14th February 2007,
strangely enough when I bought my car. He was the sales
manager at the local VW dealership. It was very much love at
first sight!! I was completely smitten!
Who proposed to whom?
We used to go to Hylands Park on our lunch breaks when we
first started dating. It was so romantic we went over there
on the 7th June 2009 and we sat on the bench we always
used to sit on. Simon got down on one knee and asked me to
marry him.
How long did it take you both to decide on the venue for the
wedding and reception?
We decided to set a date about 2 weeks after Simon had
proposed, we decided on Boreham House straight away, we
both immediately fell in love with the venue.
What made you choose Boreham House in Chelmsford in
preference to other Approved Venues?
We both loved the look of Boreham House, as soon as we
entered the grounds. We fell in love with the venue and
didn’t even look anywhere else after that. I was born in
Chelmsford and it was very important to me to be married in
my home town. Boreham House is a Grade 1 listed building
dating from 1730. It is set in 35 acres of landscaped grounds
which make the place ideal for weddings.
As you drive into the venue there is a beautiful avenue of
trees between a breathtaking formal lake. It just had the
Wow factor for a wedding that we were looking for.
Give an overview of the ceremony
The ceremony was full of emotion. As soon as Simon saw
me and the girls walking down the aisle he became very
tearful which made all of our guests tearful. It was perfect in
everyway, full of so much emotion that we will never forget.
Did you have any readings? What did you choose and why?
Our eldest daughter Morgan really wanted to give a reading.
She chose ‘The Magic of Love’. The whole build up was so
emotional for her. Emotions completely took over her so
Morgan was helped with her reading by my mum. The words
were so beautiful and it meant so much for Morgan to read
them out.
How many people attended the ceremony?
We had 65 guests to the day and 135 in the evening.
Who was more nervous during the ceremony and why?
Definitely me, Simon is so laid back. I was extremely nervous
in the build up to walking down the aisle. It was very nerve
racking saying our vows in front of so many people.
I remember getting my words wrong on a few occasions.
Any humorous moments during the ceremony?
This would have to be the wedding co-ordinator. When we
were announced as Mr & Mrs Smith instead of Mr & Mrs
King my face must have looked like thunder at the time.
I can see the funny side now and it’s a moment our guests
and ourselves with never forget.
Sum up your wedding in one word!
Amazing.

Giving Notice
Since April 1995 it has been possible for civil marriages to take
place regularly in hotels, stately homes, civic halls and similar
premises. The choice of venues in Essex is ever increasing.
Contact any Registration Office in Essex or visit our website
celebrateinessex.co.uk for an up-to-date list of venues.
Marriages are not currently allowed to take place outdoors, in
marquees or other temporary or moveable structures. The secular
nature of civil marriage precludes the use of any building with a
recent or continuing religious connection.
To arrange a wedding in an Approved Venue, you must first
contact the venue to make provisional arrangements.
You must then contact the local Registration Office for the area in
which the premises are located to ensure the Registration Officers
can attend your wedding on the date and time of your choice.
Details of giving formal notice of marriage can be given to you at
that time.
There is an additional fee for getting married at an Approved
Venue.
www.theedgephotography.co.uk
www.slightandwattsphotos.com
Before you can marry in a Registration Office, Approved Venue,
church or chapel in England and Wales (other than a Church of
England where you may have banns called), you must give notice
of your intention to marry.
27
Each person wanting to marry has to give their own notice of
intention to marry to the Superintendent Registrar or nominated
deputy in the area in which they reside. In Essex, this can be any
office (except Southend and Thurrock). Both parties must have
resided in a district of England or Wales for at least 7 whole days
immediately prior to giving a Notice of Marriage.
This notice will then be displayed on the public notice board for 15
days, after which, provided all documentation has been received
and cleared, a certificate for marriage to proceed may be issued.
If you live in a different area to where the marriage will take
place, you will need to apply for and obtain the authority for your
marriage to take place. This authority must be delivered to the
Minister of the church, Superintendent Registrar or their deputy of
the area where you are to marry.
You will still be able to marry in any Registration Office or
Approved Venue in England or Wales irrespective of where you
live, and your notice can still be taken up to one year in advance
of the date of your wedding. A fee is currently charged for each
notice given.
If either yourself or your partner are subject to immigration
control, new rules introduced on 1st February 2005, require each
of you to give Notice of Marriage at a designated Registration
Office. For more information, contact the Essex Register Office
Brentwood, Castle Point & Rochford, Colchester or Epping Forest
(contact details on pages 7 & 8).
Documents
When giving notice of marriage, each party will need to produce
proof of identity (name, age, marital status and nationality),
together with evidence of place of residence. Verifying documents
include birth certificate, passports, driving licences, change of
name statements and divorce documents. Our staff will be happy
to advise further.
If either of you has been married before, either in this country or
abroad, you will need to show proof of your divorce.
If either of you was divorced in England or Wales, we will need
to see a court-stamped copy of the decree absolute (the final
divorce paper). If the divorce took place in a foreign country, we
will need to see the original document issued by that country and
an English translation, if the document is in a foreign language. If
no documents were issued in the foreign country, we will tell you
what we can accept as proof of the divorce.
If you have married each other in a foreign country you only need
to get married here if you think that marriage was not legal. If you
decide to get married here we will need to see any documents
issued by that country when you give us notice of your marriage.
If either of you is under 18, we will need to see proof that your
parents or guardian agree to the marriage. If your parents are
divorced we may also need to see the court order that gives
custody to one of them.
The Registration staff will give you advice on this matter.
www.taraleephotography.co.uk
www.townandcountryphoto.co.uk
www.seweddingphotography.co.uk
www.townandcountryphoto.co.uk
If either of you is a widow or widower we will need to see a
certified copy of your former partner’s death certificate from the
registration authority of the country where your former partner
died. Also the widow needs to show a copy of the marriage
certificate.
28
Words
The ceremony will begin with an introduction by the
Superintendent Registrar.
Each of the parties must also say to the other (choosing one of the
following statements):
The bride and groom will then be asked, in turn, to repeat the
following solemn declarations:
“I call upon these persons here present to witness that I …
do take thee … to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband).”
“I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment
why I … may not be joined in matrimony to …”
or
“I … take you … to be my wedded wife (or husband).”
or
or
“I declare that I know of no legal reason why I … may not be
joined in marriage to …”
or by replying “I am” to the question
“I … take thee … to be my wedded wife (or husband).”
The ceremony may be enhanced by making additional vows and
commitments to each other beyond the legally required ones.
“Are you … free lawfully to marry …?”
www.theedgephotography.co.uk
The Registration staff in each area will be happy to discuss the
ceremony options available to you. The Superintendent Registrar
will state that the parties have made the declarations required.
29
www.david-islip-photography.co.uk
personalising Your big day
The bride and groom
may choose to be interviewed
separately allowing the bride
to enter the room escorted by
a friend or relative.
You may provide your
own choice of music.
It can be played as
background music
while your guests assemble
and again at the conclusion of the ceremony.
The Registration staff will need to have your requirements
at least six to eight weeks before your wedding.
Another way to personalise the ceremony is
to incorporate a reading of verse
or a suitable piece of prose. Our offices have
a selection of popular readings, which may
be read by you or by one of your guests.
You may wish to provide a piece of verse or
prose which you prefer. However, due to legal
constraints, no religious material may be used
and the Superintendent Registrar or their
nominated deputy must therefore approve
the intended reading beforehand.
At Approved venues
Weddings in these venues are more popular than ever, as couples
discover that they offer any number of options and ideas including,
the convenience of the ceremony, reception and entertainment all
in one location.
The ceremony provided by the Essex Registration Service is a civil
ceremony, with no religious elements. It should also be noted that
marriages are not allowed to take place outdoors, or in temporary
or moveable structures.
However, an increasing number of the venues now have gazebos
and other facilities that enable couples to have a unique and
memorable ceremony experience.
30
It is not unusual for the bride and groom to be nervous on the
day of the wedding. It helps to know what to expect, so hopefully
the following information will help ease your mind.
Arrival
www.blokewithacamera.co.uk
On The Day
Witnesses
The law requires that you are accompanied by at least two credible
witnesses at your wedding. They may be relatives, friends or
colleagues who must be able to speak and understand English.
It is very important for you and your guests to arrive at least 10
minutes earlier than the time of your marriage. This will allow you
to be interviewed before the ceremony and for your guests to be
seated. You will be greeted by the Registrar who will see the bride
and groom privately to check details and take fees for the marriage
ceremony and certificate.
Recording the event
Flowers
Parking
All Ceremony Rooms are tastefully decorated. You may, however,
wish to make your own floral arrangements. Please discuss this
with the Registration staff or the venue.
The amount of parking varies at each Registration Office. For further
information, please contact the Registration Office where your
wedding will be taking place. Most Approved Venues have ample
parking available.
A wedding album is a very special memento – we are happy to
allow photography in the Ceremony Room at specified times. A
single video recording is also permitted, but please inform the
Registration staff beforehand.
Music
Confetti
Music systems with CD players are provided in all our Registration
Offices with a selection of suitable music. If, however, you have a
favourite or meaningful piece you wish to have played, discuss it
well before the day with the Registration staff who will be happy to
advise you. In an Approved Venue, you have other options,
including live music.
31
Confetti is a familiar part of any wedding, but please ask your
guests not to throw confetti inside the building!
If your ceremony is at an Approved Venue, they will be happy to
advise you regarding these details.
Wedding traditions
The origins and meaning behind some of our most cherished
wedding traditions may surprise you. Many of the traditions
associated with modern day weddings can be found to have their
roots in the customs and rituals of our ancestors.
Why does the bride stand on the left and groom on the right?
Throwing confetti
It is believed the practice goes back to times when the groom
would ‘capture’ his bride by kidnapping her. Should the groom
have to fight off other men who also wanted her as their bride, he
would hold her with his left hand whilst leaving his right hand free
to use his sword.
Originates from the ancient Pagan rite of showering the happy
couple with grain to wish them a fruitful union.
S E Photography
Engagement and wedding rings are traditionally worn on the third
finger of the left hand. The Romans believed that the vein in that
finger runs directly to the heart. The wedding ring represents a
never-ending circle, symbolising everlasting love.
www.slightandwattsphotos.com
www.slightandwattsphotos.com
In days gone by, women would try to rip pieces of the bride’s dress
and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To get away
from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away.
Nowadays the bouquet is tossed to single women with the belief
that whoever catches it will be the next to marry.
www.seweddingphotography.co.uk
Third finger, left hand
Tossing the Bouquet
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed,
Something Blue, and a Silver Sixpence in your shoe
‘’Something Old’’ signifies the bride’s link to her family and the
past. The bride might, for example wear a piece of family jewellery
or her mother’s/grandmother’s wedding dress.
‘’Something New” reflects hope for good fortune and success
in the future. The bride often chooses the wedding gown as the
‘new’ item.
‘’Something Borrowed’’ is often an item already worn by a happy
bride at her wedding, such as a handkerchief or item of jewellery.
‘’Something Blue’’ dates back to biblical times when the colour
blue was considered to represent purity and fidelity. Over time
this has evolved from wearing blue clothing to wearing a blue
band around the bottom of the bride’s dress and more modern
times where the bride wears a blue coloured garter.
‘’And a Silver Sixpence in your shoe’’ - the placing of a silver
sixpence in the bride’s left shoe is a symbol of wealth. Not simply
to bring the bride financial wealth but also a wealth of happiness
and joy throughout her marriage.

Readings
Yes I’ll marry you
(Pam Ayres)
Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear,
And here’s the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed
When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking
And it’s creepy and it’s late,
I hand you the torch you see,
And you investigate.
Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear,
You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes
It’s you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It’s you that has to whack him.
Yes, I’ll marry you,
You’re virile and you’re lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner
Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night!
It’s you who has to work the drill
And put up curtain track,
And when I’ve got PMT it’s you who
Gets the flack,
I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
As so before you see the light,
I do, I do, I do!
Where there is love
(Helen Steiner Rice)
Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright,
Where there is love there is a song,
To help when things are going wrong
Where there is love there is a smile
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is love there’s quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoil’s cease Love changes darkness into light

Marriage is a promise of love
(Edmund O’Neill)
Marriage is a commitment to life – to the best that two people can find and bring out in each other.
It offers opportunities for sharing and growth no other human relationship can equal, a physical and emotional joining that is promised
for a lifetime.
Within the circle of its love, marriage encompasses all of life’s most important relationships.
A wife and husband are each other’s best friend, confidant, lover, teacher, listener and critic.
There may come times when one partner is heartbroken or ailing, and the love of each other may resemble the tender caring of a parent
for a child.
Marriage deepens and enriches every facet of life. Happiness is fuller; memories are fresher; commitment is stronger; even anger is felt
more strongly and passes away more quickly.
Marriage understands and forgives the mistakes life is unable to avoid.
It encourages and nurtures new life, new experiences, and new ways of expressing love through the seasons of life.
When two people pledge to love and care for each other in Marriage, they create a spirit unique to themselves, which binds them closer
than any spoken or written words.
Marriage is a promise, a potential, made in the hearts of two people who love, which takes a lifetime to fulfil.
34
We are delighted to offer non-statutory Civil Naming
Ceremonies.
These may be held at any of our Registration Offices or any one of
numerous venues throughout the county and could be combined
with a Marriage Ceremony. Ceremonies are also available in
private homes and the outdoors, subject to prior inspection for
suitability of the location.
There may be a variety of reasons why you would want to choose
such a ceremony - welcoming a new born child into an extended
family; choosing one or two supporting adults to have the
opportunity to enhance the life of your child and take a special
interest in that child throughout its life; announcing the news that
a child has been adopted into a family; or simply making this an
occasion to announce the names that have been given to your
child and perhaps to give the reasons behind the choice.

naming Ceremonies
Whatever your reasons, Essex Celebrants will offer a quality
service. Their aim will be to make the occasion truly memorable
and meaningful, ensuring a perfect occasion.
You may choose readings, either poetry or prose, or ask your
guests to select something especially relevant to express their
wishes for the child or children. Your Celebrant will help you
plan the ceremony to include friends, grandparents, supporting
adults and absent guests. There will be opportunities for
music and reflection. At the close you will be presented with a
commemorative record of the ceremony. You will then be free to
proceed to your own celebrations.

renewal of Vows
The Essex Registration Service is delighted that married
couples can renew their marriage vows in a unique and
personal ceremony.
Often these ceremonies are associated with a special wedding
anniversary such as the tenth, twenty-fifth, fortieth, etc, but
the ceremony is just as appropriate for couples at any stage of
marriage. The ceremonies are particularly attractive to couples
who have recently married abroad and who would then like to
have a further ceremony involving friends and family who were
unable to attend the wedding.
Is there a choice of ceremony?
Certainly. The ceremony is put together by you from a wide range
of choices on offer. This ensures that no two ceremonies are
exactly the same and you are creating a unique event that you
and your guests will remember. Special people in your lives can
take part in your ceremony, your children, guests who were at the
wedding and any friends and relatives. You will also need to ask
two people to witness the signing of the certificate of the event.
Where can Renewal of Marriage Vows ceremonies be held?
Ceremonies are being offered in Registration Offices on weekdays
and at weekends, subject to availability. They are also available
in buildings, like hotels, that have been licensed by the County
Council as venues for civil marriage. Most of the venues listed
elsewhere in this booklet are available for ceremonies but it is
recommended that you check venue availability. Ceremonies are
also available in private homes and the outdoors, subject to prior
inspection for suitability of the location.

Buy with confidence
Essex County Council’s Trading Standards service is working to
improve the service provided to consumers with their Buy With
Confidence Scheme. Buy With Confidence only recommends
businesses which have been vetted and approved by Essex
Trading Standards.
When you are looking for a venue for the big day, look for the
Buy With Confidence logo, or visit: buywithconfidence.gov.uk
It’s the only referral scheme approved by Essex Trading
Standards – a name you can trust.
Go online today at buywithconfidence.gov.uk or call
0845 404 0506
The benefits of using a
Buy With Confidence approved business
• You’ll get a professional job done, charged at a fair price,
giving you peace of mind
• The business terms and conditions have been checked
to ensure they are fair
• The businesses charging policy will be
fair and transparent
• The venue has agreed to abide by the
scheme’s code of practice including
a commitment to providing a quality
service for their customers.
Apart from choosing your partner, this could be the biggest
decision of your life, enjoy it.
For that reason you need to approach the choice rationally, easier
said than done with so much choice. Work out your budget before
you start looking and try to stick to it.
Choose a dress which flatters you; your figure, skin tone and
hair colour and height. It should feel right for your personality
and the venue which you have chosen. Find the dress before you
start planning the wedding theme and colours as these should
compliment the dress.
Follow a few simple guidelines. A-line dresses work best if your
hips are your focal point. If you have a tiny waist, show it off
with a quality boned bodice. If you are tall you can get away with
most shapes and styles, similarly if you are tiny, but in the right
proportions. Have you looked at short dresses?
If you rely on a good support bra then choose a dress with
shoulder straps to hide the bra straps. If you have strong
shoulders then you try and avoid halter necks. To show off your
cleavage, choose a nice sweetheart neckline. If you are modest
try a round neck.
www.stormphotography.co.uk
The Dress
For the more petite bride, consider strapless with chiffon ruffling
over. To hide a larger than desired waist try ruching over the waist
or an asymmetric waistline. Empire line also works well for petite
brides as the longest length to the eye of the onlooker is from
your chest to the floor.
If this is your second wedding, fashion will have changed and
maybe you want something a bit different, with elegant lines and
maybe a bit of embroidery, colour or something a bit quirky.
Dresses come with embellishments that come in all shapes and
sizes such as jewels, sequins, flowers and lace. Choose what you
feel comfortable with.
And finally one word of advice: When you have found ‘The dress’
stop looking. It sounds like common sense but believe it or not
many girls end up buying two dresses because they don’t know
when to stop!
