That this executive is as excellent as it is.............is, in no small measure, thanks to the effort of our Past Grand Knight Martin Evers. Martin you have taught us well and we fully appreciate the selfless devotion you have given over the past year. As we continue through this year may the Holy Spirit fill us with the wisdom, courage, and ability to excel in all our duties and responsibilities as we serve our Council; our Parishes; and our Community. In the good times and the tough times ahead, we must remember that the Venerable Father McGivney is always with us. We must not hesitate to call upon him for assistance as we guide our Brother Knights in all they undertake. The year is already off to a great start thanks to the work of our Budget and Audit committees.............the audit has been completed and the 2008/2009 budget is ready for presentation at the October meeting. Council has not been idle throughout the summer and under the guidance of Brother Dennis Collins, our members once again contributed to a very successful Thomas the Tank Engine project. Not only did we have a lot of fun and make a lot of children happy..................we were able to raise a significant amount of money to assist with our charitable programs. A new Bulletin Ad committee has also been busy and we will see an increase in advertising and revenue from our monthly bulletin this year. Please patronize these sponsors whenever possible. They believe in us; lets return that faith. Please remember also that our Canadian soldiers continue their difficult work in service of our Country. Please keep the troops and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Jim Flynn Grand Knight, Council 1467 Chaplain’s Message Dear Brother Knights and Families, Once again Summer is fast coming to an end, and all the activities of the Fall Season will start up again.. Schools will re-open, Club activities will begin and the Knights of Columbus will begin their fraternal year. We welcome our new Grand Knight Jim Flynn who will be leading and guiding our Council for the next two years. He will be assisted by an eager executive who are eager to make our fraternal year a very productive and fulfilling one. As the fraternal year begins, it would be a good practice for all those who sponsored new members during the last year to contact them and invite them to come out to our meetings. We need our new members to begin taking an active role in the working of our Council. We look forward to a good fraternal year. Pall Bearer Committee Information The purpose of this ministry is to serve families at their time of need. Late Sir Knight Jack Cryan introduced this service to council 1467 over 40 years ago. We have served dozens of families of all faith dimensions over that period of time. From time to time we need to update our list of volunteer pall bearers. It usually takes about 2 1/2 – 3 hours of your time to perform this service when requested. It is a privilege for those who have volunteered their time to be a pall bearer to be able to help a family at their time of need. You assistance in putting your name on this volunteer list will be most appreciated. Some of you are retired, work shifts or are available on Saturdays. The more people we have available helps to lesson the number of times you will be called upon. John Van Eyk, President of the Right to Life accepts a cheque from Past Grand Knight, Martin Evers and Larry McCaffery, Chairman of the Rose Sunday, held each year at Holy Angels and St. Annes Parishes. These funds help the Right to Life with many things in their organization such as Advertising, (Signs and Billboards), etc. Bro. Ron McCormick is the new Coordinator of this committee. He is in the process of reviewing the list of volunteer Pall Bearers. If you would like more information about being included on this list please contact Bro. Ron at 519-633-1906 ImportantDates Check out our new look with the Sponsor pages (7 & 8). We hope that all the ladies and Past Presidents enjoyed there luncheon, and thanks to Bro. Alouis Vanhooydonk and the Ladies Auxiliary for a job well done. Youth Program: Bro. Peter Kuntz 633-0436 ([email protected]) The Knights of Columbus hosts a yearly soccer challenge. If a Bro. Knight would like to get this started in our area, contact Bro Peter or the Deputy Grand Knight for information. Tim Buchanan, DGK “Thinking Ahead”: Part 1. It has 3 main parts. The first is that any Knight hearing of the death of a Brother Knight is asked to contact the Grand Knight as soon as possible. The Grand Knight has some specific duties to fulfill in the new protocol and needs to be advised as soon as possible. A second feature relates to our long-standing tradition of providing a K of C Honour Guard at the funeral of a Brother Knight. The Honour Guard is intended to acknowledge the passing of any Brother, whether we may know him or not. Families of deceased Knights repeatedly say how much they appreciate the presence of the K of C Honour Guard at the funeral of their loved one. We all know that life is short, and thinking ahead, most Brothers would probably like a similar honour bestowed at their own funeral. The “Golden Rule” immediately comes to mind. Health and work permitting, every able Knight should try to participate in each Honour Guard. It gives us the opportunity to practice a Corporal Work of Mercy. The third feature will be discussed in the next bulletin. Page 3 Ladies! Ladies! Ladies! Greetings Ladies, Welcome back! I hope your summer was filled with good times shared with family and friends. Summer is almost over and it’s time for our first meeting on September 2nd at 2pm followed by Rummoli. Come out and support the auxiliary and have some fun and maybe add a few pennies to your penny jar. Our Euchre Parties will also be starting up again on September the19th. The Knights again provided a wonderful widows luncheon on August 21st. The food was truly delicious and all the ladies thoroughly enjoyed it. Ladies Auxiliary Meeting – September 2nd at 2pm at the K of C Hall Euchre Party – September 19th at 7:30pm at the K of C Hall Blessings your way, Mary Ressler 519-633-6691 Ladies Auxiliary President Columbus Club Report The Columbus Club would like to introduce the Executive: our new president is now Dave Vandenberg, the Ladies Auxiliary President Mary Ressler as the new recording secretary, the financial secretary remains as Brother Joe Fleming, along with Brothers Dave Elford, Roy Esbaugh, Jim McAnulty and our Grand Knight Jim Flynn. (You don't have to be a Knight to attend, so please invite others) It is events such as these that help grow the council and keep you in touch with your Fellow Knights and possibly recruit future Knights. On behalf of the Columbus Club we wish to thank those that have donated to the parking lot and something more personal and a complete update will be made available over the next couple of months. We look forward to another successful year and please feel free to reach any of the executive team with any questions. On behalf of the Council and the “Day Out With Thomas” Organizing Committee, I would thank the fifty eight Knights and wives for their work in making the event such a success. In addition to the work of the ticket punchers, boarding crews, train hosts and those who worked in the support areas and the retail shops, I thank the telephone committee for their contribution towards mobilizing our people. In looking at the work of the Knights, they were enthusiastic workers contributing greatly to the excitement and great feeling of the parents and children who attended. As well they were wonderful ambassadors for our city, in that they were a great source of information and direction to the large number of visitors to St. Thomas. Many of the Knights and their families took part in the Appreciation Ride on the final Sunday that took them to Pt. Stanley (and back) and in the Thank You Barbeque at the Seniors’ Centre. Finally and importantly, the Council is most appreciative of the opportunity provided by the Day Out With Thomas Organizing Committee to raise Council funds which can be directed into our Operational Spending.
