Golden Knights

Annual Review 2013-2014
Our Mission
St. Francis High School provides a Catholic college preparatory education
in the Capuchin Franciscan tradition of love and discipline.
We enrich the mind and the heart through the teachings
of Jesus Christ and Francis of Assisi.
We strengthen the Franciscan values of respect for others and self
through humility and service to the poor.
We create a brotherhood for young men of diverse backgrounds.
We envision a Franciscan education not as an end in itself,
but as a means of forging men of virtue.

KNIGHTLIGHT
Message from the President
Dear St. Francis family,
B
ack in the early 1900’s the Irish Capuchins came to
California to share their mission that is uniquely
human and deeply spiritual because it requires
the friars to be “present.” When St. Francis High School
first opened its doors in 1946 as a minor seminary with a
handful of day students, that mission permeated the walls
and spaces of the former Flintridge Country Club. Now,
nearly seventy years later, that spirit of being “present” has
not changed. Essential to our Catholic tradition of enriching
the mind and heart is the notion that we, the family of
St. Francis High School, be present for one another – that we
share joy and support in humble ways. I believe as you read
and look through the pages of this Knightlight magazine,
you will see many examples of how we, as a family and as
a community have been present. With our Annual Review,
you will see the names of literally hundreds of dear friends
– alumni, current parents, parents of graduates, friends
and foundations who have made a point of being present
and humbly supporting our educational mission. You will
see how models of leadership at St. Francis High School
have created a legacy – something that we are all part of –
something that our very presence, creates a “present” for
our young Golden Knights.
As we pray for selfless love, peace and forgiveness, we call
to mind the simplicity and great wisdom of the Prayer of
St. Francis. In this, we hear those sixteen Franciscan virtues
that we live each and every day on campus. We see how
a life that focuses on being present can have such a profound
impact on our very existence. So allow me then, to focus on
one specific virtue: gratitude. Let me reflect on the peace
and good that is St. Francis High School. Let me say thank
you and remember you, my friend, and those you love. You
are a gift to us. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and we
rejoice in thanksgiving for the blessing of you, dear friend.
Cicero once wrote, “A thankful heart is not only the greatest
virtue, but the parent of all other virtues.” Know that in our
humble, compassionate and prayerful ways, the Capuchin
Franciscan Friars celebrate your goodness, your generosity,
your prayerful support and your loyal commitment to our
mission. We are most thankful – our Golden Knights are
forever blessed and truly joyful because of you!
You are remembered in our prayers and Masses. Please
remember us, and our treasured St. Francis family, in yours.
Yours in Jesus and Francis,
Fr. Tony Marti, OFM Cap.

WINTER 2015 | 1
Address to the Graduates
May 24, 2014
I was having a difficult time deciding what to say today, so I
asked my wife for advice. She told me: “Don’t try to be too
charming, witty or intellectual. Just be yourself.”
Appropriately humbled, I had an uncharacteristic charming,
witty, intellectual idea: what better message to give
to a St. Francis graduate than “just be yourself?”
Recommending that to any group of young men in a
different environment might be the worst advice one could
offer. But, having observed your development over the
past four years, I feel confident in saying that to you. You
have grown spiritually, had your minds and hearts enriched,
and embraced the concept of brotherhood.
While not every one of you has the ability to be an
exceptional intellectual, a stellar athlete, or an outstanding
artist, each one of you is capable of goodness. Being a good
person transcends all socioeconomic lines, ethnic, gender
and age groups, and takes no particular talent.
As the culminating Franciscan virtue of your careers,
goodness embodies all of the other fifteen that were
taught. Dennis Prager wrote: “Goodness is about
character – integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral
courage. More than anything else, it is about how we treat
other people.” We have noticed that you manifest your
goodness often: in classrooms, on campus, at retreats and
Christian Service, on athletic fields and in artistic endeavors.
We pray this extends beyond our boundaries.
At the end of the day, while it might be nice to be charming,
witty or intellectual, it is far more important to be
authentically, simply, humbly good. Yet in the world you
are headed toward, goodness is not celebrated as much
as excellence, so continue your path to goodness by
practicing other Franciscan virtues:
Humility: As C.S. Lewis reminds us, “Humility is not thinking
less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”
Integrity: Harvey Mackay said: “If you have integrity,
nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing
else matters.”
Compassion: Albert Schweitzer wrote: “The purpose of
human life is to serve, to show compassion and the will to
help others.”
Service: In his graduation speech “You Are Not Special,”
David McCullough stated: “The great and curious truth of
the human experience is that selflessness is the best thing
you can do for yourself.”
Beginning this afternoon, your goodness will not be
based on solid color tucked-in polos and Dockers, your
grooming, nor your ability to follow our handbook. It will
be determined by how well you have integrated Franciscan
virtues into your life. As St. Francis professed: “Preach the
Gospel, use words if necessary.” A St. Francis graduate’s
actions not only define him, but potentially impact and
influence others. Those actions will speak louder than your
academic pursuits, personal characteristics or temporal
achievements, however substantial those may be.
So, as you move into the next phase of your life, don’t try
to be too charming, witty or intellectual. “Just be yourself.”
Do try to be a Golden Knight, a man of virtue, a man of
goodness. “Just be yourself.”
On behalf of the Board of Directors, our friars, faculty and
staff, we send you forth with our love for goodness’ sake.
Congratulations Class of 2014!

It’s strange to think that I am now going
on my third year away from St. Francis
High School. It is both a testament to
the speed with which time progresses
as it is a reminder to be appreciative
of my experience there. I remember
when I was a senior and it was only a
few weeks from graduation, I stopped
by Trader Joe’s just down the street to
buy some snacks. When I walked up
to the cashier to pay, the employee
looked at my uniform and immediately
recognized me as a St. Francis student.
I confirmed his suspicions and he
began to recount his high school
experiences, telling me that those
four years were the “best of his life”
and he wished he could “go back to
the good old days.” I appreciated the
story, but as I was on my way home,
I began to get anxious. I remember
thinking, “What if these are the best
years of my life?” I was only two or
three weeks from leaving the best years
of my ENTIRE life, if that was true...
and that really scared me. After a lot
of thought and advice-seeking, I came
to a new understanding. I need to do
everything I can to make every year the
best year of my life.
I really enjoyed my time at St. Francis
and I will always cherish my experience,
but THIS year has been the best year
of my life. So far, even though this
paradigm-shifting experience only
occurred two and a half years ago, I
have successfully made these years

From the grueling Ratline during my

to
earning

experience at the Institute has
been both challenging and fun. My

Sophomore year at Pomona College
held many great experiences for me.
After extensive thought and selfreflection, I decided to change my
major from molecular biology to art
history. With a new major and a new
path, I embraced my second semester,
taking only courses in the humanities
for the first time ever in my education.
With new goals and new trials ahead,
I began studying the Italian language
in order to better engage in dialogue
regarding Italian Baroque and Futurist
art to a much greater extent.
Part of the process of changing my
major also included reevaluating my
life goals; the summer research that
I performed between my freshmen
and sophomore years at Pomona
certainly helped me decide that I did

professional career. With an interest in
the built environment and art history,
I soon turned to architecture as a
possible career.
Following my interest in architecture,
I worked in the main office of a
Pasadena architectural firm to develop
a better sense of what a career in
architecture would be like. In the
office, I worked as an administrative
and marketing assistant the entire
summer, monitoring the office
supplies and developing proposals.
Fortunately, the firm allowed me
to take a two-week vacation in the
middle of the summer so I could go
to watch my brother, Sean ’14, race his
bike in Europe – an experience that I’ll
never forget.
After a summer’s experience working
in an architectural firm, I am still
excited about a career in design.
However, after taking two art courses
this semester, I am more strongly
considering majoring in studio art
and am more broadly considering a
career in product, industrial or
environmental design. Throughout
the past year, many changes have
occurred in my life. However, I could
not be more excited about the new
direction my life is taking, and I look
forward to the coming semesters.

Hello St. Francis family! It is hard to
believe that I am already a junior
studying mathematics and pre-physical
therapy at the University of Portland.
The first two years of college have
absolutely flown by. Last year I had
the opportunity of a lifetime – to
study abroad in Salzburg, Austria
for the entire year. What a blessing!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time: I
visited fourteen different countries and
experienced their unique cultures.
Some highlights include attending
a few professional soccer games,
meeting wonderful people as I toured
their homelands, speaking and
learning their perspectives, and of
course, attempting to navigate public
transportation! With this newly-found
independence, I grew immensely.
During my year abroad, I discovered
more about who I am, and what I
value most in life – my faith, and

to leadership and, with that, many
responsibilities. Tasks ranging from
training the new cadets, or “Rats,”
to writing papers on international
relations theory and organizing events
for my class were now on the table.
All of these responsibilities, as well as
academics and military duties made for
a very challenging Third Class year.
Though there were many challenges,
it was an exciting time. I managed
to earn a contract to commission as
a Second Lieutenant in the Army.
The contract required evaluations in
my physical fitness, academics and
military bearing and though it took a
lot of hard work, I couldn’t be happier.
I plan on commissioning as an Armor
Officer after graduating in 2016 and
hope to make a career in federal law
enforcement afterwards.
I also studied in Paris this summer. I
studied War & Art in Paris as well as
French literature. Paris is a city steeped

campus in Portland. Returning to my
major studies and my life in Portland
has been both refreshing and difficult.
At this point, I have completed all of
my general education classes and am
now focusing on the upper division
to study the city in depth was an
invaluable experience. Visiting the
city is one thing, but actually
understanding it is a whole other thing!
The experience of studying abroad,
however, was much more valuable
than the coursework. I was able to
take trips to the D-Day landing sites in
Normandy, the Cathedral at Chartres,
the Bundeswehr Academy in Germany
and then visit Dublin. Studying
abroad definitely has been one of the
highlights of my college experience.
Even after running around in the woods
training with the Army and travelling
across the globe, I can’t help but
think back to my experiences at
St. Francis. St. Francis gave me an
amazing base from which to build.
“To lead is to serve,” and while I am
learning new leadership skills at VMI,
I remember the lessons in service
St. Francis taught me. By keeping
those values of selfless service
and integrity I learned at St. Francis
close, I believe I will become a

These classes are challenging to say
the least, however, there is nothing
more satisfying than working and
completing a long, complex math
problem. In other words, it is refreshing
to be able to work on the studies that
I like but also difficult
in the sense of the
intensity of the classes!

St. Clare of Assisi
Awards
One of the many traditions of St. Francis High School is the presentation of the St. Clare of Assisi Award
during the Baccalaureate Mass. St. Clare shared a vital part of Francis’ dream and she both supported
and enhanced everything that Francis did publicly through her hidden, yet profound life of prayer
and community.
Family spirit has always been a dynamic part of the Franciscan ideal. In keeping with this, the
St. Clare of Assisi Award is presented to parents who have supported and enhanced the Franciscan
mission of education at St. Francis High School. This year we have two recipients of this award.
Kevin, Christina, Matthew ‘16, Joseph ‘14 and Michael ‘14
Our first recipient is the proud mother of three Golden
Knights. Throughout her four years as a St. Francis mom,
she has been instrumental in caring for the needs
of our school, our students and our family. An active
member of the Mothers’ Guild, she served as President
during the 2013-2014 school year. During her many years
of involvement, she also worked as a dynamic force
behind the annual St. Francis Yard Sale. Throughout her
tenure, she has supported and enhanced St. Francis High
School through her hidden, yet profound, love and care, just
as Clare did for Francis.
We joined her husband Kevin, along with her sons
Joseph ’14, Michael ’14 and Matthew ’16, in thanking and
congratulating our first recipient of the St. Clare of Assisi
Award, Mrs. Christina Tinglof.

Our second recipient has also had a tremendous impact
on the St. Francis community during her four years as a
St. Francis mother. During her tenure, she has remained
steadfast in her commitment to supporting so many of
St. Francis High School’s endeavors. She has graced us with
her time, talent and treasure, assisting the school’s Booster
Club and Theater Arts program. As the Drama Liaison to the
Mothers’ Guild, she worked tirelessly behind the scenes to
meet the needs of the cast, crew and staff. Always ensuring
contributors were properly acknowledged and thanked,
she cared for everyone with her enthusiasm and selfless
giving. In the true spirit of Francis, she has lived the idea
of preaching the gospel at all times, using words when
necessary. From performances to fundraisers – from
retreats and communion breakfasts to education, this mom
has been present and supportive of all that our Golden
Knights have accomplished.
We joined her husband Habib, and her sons Frederick ’14,
and Edward in thanking and congratulating our next
recipient of the St. Clare of Assisi Award, Mrs. Toni Balian.

St. Francis of Assisi
Award
At this year’s Baccalaureate Mass,
we began a new tradition with the
presentation of the St. Francis of Assisi
Award. Here at St. Francis, we remain
committed to living out the teachings
of Jesus Christ and Francis of Assisi
by enriching the mind and heart,
strengthening respect through service
and humility, creating a brotherhood
and envisioning men of virtue
and peace.
In keeping with our philosophy, the
St. Francis of Assisi Award is presented
to a parent who has supported and
enhanced our Capuchin Franciscan
mission of education by embodying
all of the Franciscan virtues and
demonstrating our virtues in action to
the young men at St. Francis.
Our first recipient is the proud father
of two Golden Knights. Throughout
his six consecutive years as a
“St. Francis Dad”, he has made a
positive impact on our school, our
students and our family.
Capturing an opportunity to further
enhance the St. Francis experience,
he created the St. Francis Mountain
Bike Team six years ago and has
coached the team ever since. Under his
dynamic guidance and direction, the
team has achieved great success.
More importantly, his mentorship,
compassion and enthusiasm have
transformed a fledgling athletic team
into a close-knit family that emphasizes
integrity, service, brotherhood and
prayer. A consummate teacher, this
man strives to help our Golden Knights
grow and improve both on and off
the course.
We joined his wife Pat, along with

in thanking and congratulating our
very first recipient of the St. Francis

Models of Leadership
Pete Brang
Legacy.
There are a few meanings to consider.
Let’s look at this: Legacy is something
transmitted by or received from an
ancestor or predecessor or from the
past. Often times, when you begin
a journey, you aren’t thinking about
creating a legacy. But maybe you
should be. One might argue that
great leaders, those who we regard
as “models of leadership”, inherently
think about legacy as they begin a new
journey. These leaders are exceptional
in the ways they tend to their mission.
They are always “Mission Possible”
and operate a highly effective mission.
Consider our legacy at St. Francis High
School – what is “it” that is transmitted
through our history? That “it” is
undoubtedly something quite valuable.
It is also something intangible. When
we take our thoughts back to 1946,
we remember a new beginning with
the dark days of war behind. This was
when the late Fr. Stephen Murtaugh,
OFM Cap. acquired the property and
buildings of the Flintridge Country
Club in La Cañada with the intention of
Fr. Cyril (middle) and
Jack Friedman (right)
12 | WINTER 2015
founding a minor seminary for aspirants
to the Capuchin Franciscan Order. The
late Most Reverend John H. Cantwell
asked that day students be admitted in
addition to the seminarians because of
the lack of Catholic schools in the area.
1946 was a pivotal year then, for the
Capuchins, who took their Order
mission and applied it directly to their
newest ministry. The mission of these
friars was and remains, “to be a joyful
presence of hope and salvation to all,
especially to those most in need.” At
St. Francis High School, those most
in need were and continue to be the
young men who fill our classrooms
with energy and question, enthusiasm
and uncertainty – and leave our hillside campus as gentlemen of virtue.
You see over time, a specific mission
was dedicated to this sacred ground –
A Catholic tradition of enriching the
mind and heart. So many Capuchin
leaders – Fr. Valerian, Fr. Emilian,
Fr. Enda, Fr. Cyril, and Fr. Lawrence,
and those who followed, held fast to
this mission.
In those sixty-eight years, our leaders
have created and maintained a safe
and nurturing educational environment
where the qualities of our Founding
Father, St. Francis, can best be
absorbed. Since those first days, we
look to instill a value system – where
our Golden Knights use their God
given gifts for good. A healthy tension,
as one wise friar put it, exists between
goodness and excellence. Excellence
is a goal-oriented, secular value.
Goodness is a God-like virtue that
brings happiness, peace and a sense of
self satisfaction. Inherent in our legacy
is the understanding that the value
of goodness must not be diminished
for excellence.
The original group of 25 students has
grown to a current student population of 600 young men. And while our
leaders have strived for mission
effectiveness, one might borrow
current Principal Mr. Tom Moran’s
words, that we have not declared,
“Mission Accomplished”. To do so,
would terminate our legacy. It would
signal the end of our journey when
there is still so much more to do.
Sure, we saw tremendous physical
accomplishments during Fr. Matt’s
leadership – our campus was literally
transformed with a new parking
structure, Degheri Performing Arts
Center, FieldTurf, all-weather track,
FieldHouse, Norman Family Courtyard
and classroom renovations. Fr. Tony,
our current President oversaw the
addition of a new classroom wing
KNIGHTLIGHT
over the gymnasium and launch of our
technology initiative that will bring 1:1
learning to St. Francis. How was all of
this possible – we would argue it is
because of our St. Francis legacy. It is,
as Tom Moran put it so appropriately
during our August Liturgy to wish
Fr. Matt well and welcome Fr. Tony
as our new President, because of our
Mount Rushmore. “The real Mount
Rushmore of St. Francis includes
Fr. Enda, Fr. Cyril and Fr. Lawrence
– they are the giants upon whose
shoulders our staff members stand
today.” And on that sunny, hot August
morning, one would add that Fr. Matt
would also be on our Mount Rushmore
because no one would rush more to
get things done right, to exemplify
Franciscan values, to preach the
Gospel and use words if necessary, to
pray for our needs, to be an instrument
of peace and an example of humility.
At the beginning of our school year,
we learned long-time teacher, coach,
administrator, friend and leader, Pete
Brang would retire in June. You can’t
help but think of our Mount Rushmore
once again. In his many roles, Pete
has lived our mission to enrich the
mind and heart so effectively. He has
demonstrated in both words and
action, how a man can live like Francis.
He embodies and embraces those
sixteen Franciscan virtues we teach our
young gentlemen during the course
of their four years at St. Francis. So,
yes our Mount Rushmore looks a little
different than what you see in South
Dakota and one might argue, it’s
getting a little crowded, but remember,
we are truly unique. Our Mount
Rushmore then, must be truly unique.
After all, we are St. Francis High School
and we have a legacy of enriching the
mind and heart to uphold.
Close your eyes and reflect back. Think
of September 1971 – it seems like
yesterday doesn’t it? You may
remember it well – Frank Robinson
hit his 500th homerun, John Lennon
released his “Imagine” album and
both Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors
won their first U.S. Open match and
the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts opened in Washington
DC. These were some highlights set
in a contentious time as the Vietnam
War raged on. In our own history,
St. Francis had its highlight with
the hire of a young gentleman,
Peter “Pete” Brang, an accomplished
runner and graduate of University of
Nebraska. He was Fr. Lawrence’s
choice over two alumni candidates
because Pete could fulfill two needs for
St. Francis – he would teach history
and he would coach our cross country
and track programs. To this day, Pete
remembers what Fr. Lawrence told him
when he was hired, “Social Studies
teachers are a dime a dozen – but good
ones are hard to find.” Not the most
reassuring way to start your first job
out of college for sure, but it did
motivate and focus a young man who
had grown accustomed to pushing
beyond perceived limits, to do the
extraordinary. Keep in mind, Pete
garnered some rather impressive
results in his time at Nebraska –
including a 49.2 400m, 1:50 800m,
4:02 mile and 8:59 2-mile. Talk about
quick. Talk about versatile. Talk about
loyal to a mission. What Pete remembers
most about those days – his roommate
beating him in the mile with a 3:59.
Don’t you wish you could “bottle” that
competitive fire?
Pete decided to teach only because
his first love – coaching – would be
possible only if he could get himself in
a school setting. Inherently, he knew
that to be a good coach, he would
need to be a good educator. That
would be the difference. And that’s
what he set his mind to. He applied
ST. FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL | ALUMNI AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS
all that he had learned running and
in the classroom to his career as an
educator and a coach. He committed
himself daily to being a part of an
integral team that would implement
the mission of St. Francis High School
each and every day. And just like he
learned from running cross country,
there are no time-outs. It’s you and the
clock. In high school, there are only
four years to make a difference. Four
years for boys to become fine young
gentlemen. Four years that can set our
graduates apart. Pete believes that
our Golden Knights set themselves
apart as gentlemen – as good
husbands, good fathers and good
members of our community. There
is goodness – a sincerity, honesty
and moral integrity – that makes a
Golden Knight recognizable. While
Pete was quick to point out there
are other schools that do this, he
wanted to be a part of the team
that made this goodness happen at
St. Francis High School.
Many times, Pete was challenged
with addressing that healthy tension
between goodness and excellence
and sought to find just the right
balance. One of his favorite cross
country memories dates back to
the early 80’s. St. Francis was racing
powerhouse St. John Bosco at Oak
Grove Park. One of our top runners,
Michael Whitehead ’83 stopped
during the race to check on another
runner who went down during the
run. He helped the fallen runner get
WINTER 2015 | 13
back up and get back in the race. Pete
remembers offering this “real world”
advice, “You’ve got to first finish the
race – then go back and check!” To
this day, Pete remembers fondly
a Golden Knight who extols the
Franciscan virtues.
One of the recent highlights of Pete’s
career was when he and his wife Sherry
travelled with our student pilgrims,
St. Francis staff and Fr. Tony Marti,
OFM Cap. to Rome and Assisi. He will
always remember Easter Mass in the
St. Francis Basilica, with the body of
St. Francis over the altar – very
powerful, deeply spiritual, and a daily
reminder to model Francis.
Pete Brang and I started coaching and teaching at St. Francis in the early
70’s. I remember well when he started. I taught P.E. and coached football and
basketball - he taught social studies and coached cross country and
track. Pete helped me when he agreed to be the official scorer or timer
for basketball games. He also agreed to help with whatever he could during
a “B” team football game. In return, I promised to keep a stop watch or run
a field event for him during track. I would often kid him about how easy it
was to coach cross country, knowing full well it was not easy. I’d say, “Just tell
them to meet you at the top of a hill somewhere and don’t forget to lean
forward when you run up hill and lean back when you run down the hill.”
If only it were that simple.
Over the years, Pete and I became good friends and took many camping
vacations together with our families. Pete’s oldest, Karen was usually the
ring leader as our kids planned camp fire shows, hikes etc. To this day, we talk
about the fun we had during that time.
The KAIROS retreat program evolved
during Pete’s time at St. Francis – thanks
in a large part to another colleague
and leader, Mrs. Donna Huckaby.
Kairos is a Greek word translated as,
“the right or opportune moment – the
supreme moment”. In his role, as
a faculty presenter at a KAIROS
retreat in the early 90’s, Pete used
an analogy, “We are his hands.”
Naturally he traced this back to a
history lesson where Americans were
tenacious in a World War II battle in
1944 in a small town in Italy. There
was a statue of the sacred heart in
the town plaza – it had been bombed
and lay shattered on the ground. The
soldiers were inevitably ordered to
“move out” and on their last day,
they tried to put the statue back
When Pete became the Dean of Discipline he worked hard to gain the respect
of the students. It didn’t take long for students to learn that you didn’t mess
with Mr. Brang. In my mind, one of the most impressive things about Pete was
his ability to be tough in his role as the disciplinarian yet at the same time,
be fair and be sure the students knew he was fair. I’d say in most cases they
knew they deserved the punishment they received.Who could possibly remain
in that role for close to 40 years and still have a smile on his face every day?
I’m sure the thousands of students he has touched understand the significant
role Pete played in transitioning them from boys to fine St. Francis men.
I left St. Francis over 30 years ago and the hardest part was leaving my friends at
St. Francis. Pete and the other leaders who have stayed for so many years have
carried on with the values we all learned during our time at St. Francis. I believe
in my heart, as the new guard comes onboard over the next several years, they
will “tap into” the wisdom and experience of Pete and others like Tom Moran,
Jim O’Connor, Terry Terrazone ‘65, Rudy Trujillo and of course, the Capuchin
Franciscan Friars. Our tradition will certainly continue – a tradition of building
fine St. Francis men in the image of St. Francis.
God bless you Pete as you move into the next phase of your life.Thank you for
your friendship and great memories. Don’t forget to lean forward when you’re
running up hill.

together for the people of the town.
When they got everything together,
the soldiers noticed the hands were
missing – the hands were beyond
repair. One of the soldiers put a sign
on the statue which read, “You are
my hands.” Pete asked the students
to always remember that God works
through us. We are His hands.

him well through the years,
My earliest memory is in 1972
when my oldest brother Chris

Friends who are “newer” to our St. Francis community may not remember that Mr. Brang was the Cross Country Coach
for years and won a few league titles. As a member of some of those teams, I can tell you that you never really knew what
practice would be like until he came out from his office and sent us out for our run. We had runs that went on every
horse trail in La Cañada - to this day, I’m amazed no one ever got lost. The only way you knew where to go was to keep up.
We never really got directions. All the runs had a name and there were certain runs that we absolutely hated to hear like:
“Meet me at the towers.” – This referred to the towers you can see from the Glendale Freeway. It seemed like we were never
going to stop running those hills.
“Warm up on the bridal path. Then meet me on the track.” – Translation: we were going to run quarter mile repeats on the
track.Among cross country runners, these were better known as “killer quarters”. It was not uncommon to do ten of them,
each with a specific and ambitious time goal. No further explanation is necessary.
“Mt. Brown, see you in a few hours.” – You don’t even have to ask why we hated this one.
“Lida.” – This run takes you the back way to FSHA. And yes, we would run up St. Katherine Drive.
“Meet me on Crown.” – We would run the hill from just before the country club over and over.
“Meet me at Arbor.” – This was a street in Pasadena past the bridge where we would run another hill over and over.
Coach Brang’s key phrase,“Meet me” made us all nervous.
Many people get credit for using the phrase,“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Mr. Brang liked that phrase
and he liked it a lot. He used that phrase if anyone complained about the workout while he spun a stopwatch on his two
fingers like an airplane propeller.
Another thing I remember about Coach Brang was that he didn’t yell when you did something wrong. He would bring
you in his office and talk to you in a calm voice, and tell you how disappointed he was because of your actions. To this day,
I would rather be yelled at than have a conversation like that.
I understand “Saturdays” are now a thing of the past. I think many alumni will never forget how Mr. Brang made his way
around campus every Thursday with the Saturday Detention slips. He would walk in with these slips and the classroom
would be dead quiet as every student waited to see if he was getting a slip. I think Mr. Brang used to enjoy calling a name
out, have a student turn pale and say something like “have a nice day” or “how is it going.”
So many memories. Coach Brang certainly made a lasting impression – one that makes me laugh out loud today. More
importantly, he clearly made a difference and greatly influenced my four years at St. Francis.

As he contemplates leaving St. Francis

I had the great honor and privilege to run cross country and track for four
years (1981-84) for Coach Brang as well as have him as my U.S. History teacher.
I say great “honor and privilege” and not great “pleasure”. Running for Coach
Brang was not “fun” in the traditional sense. It was hard, painful work.We began
training for cross country in the hot, smoggy August weather both in the
morning and the afternoon. Traditionally, our first practice of the year
included running Mt. Brown (14 miles) in the morning followed by
Linda Vista-La Loma run (12 miles) in the afternoon. Coach Brang ensured we
had an incentive to train on our own prior to the official practices.
The practices did not get any easier after the first day. I can honestly say that
in no other time of my life have I subjected myself to more physical misery as
I did for Coach Brang, and for him I did it for four years.
Why did I do it? I am not a gifted runner. I never lettered varsity. I never won a
race. A good running week for me was when I did not earn “The Burger With
Everything On It” title for being the slowest person on the team that week.
I did not love running or subjecting myself to the agony of “Killer Quarters”
and other equally painful workouts. I hated giving up soft drinks which Coach
Brang required. I hated getting up early to practice before school. During the
course of the day, I felt myself dreading the agony of the upcoming afternoon
workout. On race days, I felt a special fear – not just the fear of the upcoming
3-mile sprint but the fear of letting myself and my team down by not doing my
absolute best.
officer and father to three children.
Relationships have been and always
will be key to Pete’s life. These are an
essential ingredient to enriching the
mind and heart.
So as our dedicated, genuine, humble,
loyal Vice Principal and Dean of
Students, our Pete Brang, passes
the baton to John Jordan, who will
officially take over these roles, he
offers these words of wisdom.
“Consider each child’s environment –
there are multiple dimensions to each
child. Consider the whole picture –
not just the picture you might see of a
child sitting at a classroom desk.”
And to Pete, we wish you the very
best life has to offer. Stay true to your
heart. Be His hands. Celebrate those
relationships. Always remember your
time at St. Francis. Continue to live
our legacy because you are forever
part of it. Know that so many are truly
grateful for the difference you made
in their life and those priceless,
intangible gifts that you generously
shared with hundreds of Golden
Knights and their families over the
years. God bless.
Initially I ran for Coach Brang because when I came to St. Francis I wanted to
belong and thought fitting in required being on a sports team. Since my lack
of athletic ability was not confined to a single sport but spanned all athletic
endeavors, distance running seemed a good alternative. I may be slow but I
knew I could finish, and in distance running finishing is an accomplishment.
And Coach Brang made running for him A BIG DEAL. We may not have
gotten the glory the football team received, but each of us runners knew
that we were part of something special. Over the thousands of miles we ran
together, we bonded. We knew we were doing something very hard and we
were doing it for a man who demanded we give it our best. And when we didn’t,
we heard about it. During one practice my senior year, we ran to the Rose Bowl
as a warm-up and then did wind sprints. I dogged the run to the Rose Bowl
taking my time. I didn’t see the purpose in killing myself to get to the Rose Bowl
only to kill myself some more – especially since I had no chance to place in the
upcoming race. I was a senior who had given my all for four years and felt
entitled to take a break. After practice Coach Brang pulled me aside and told
me he was disappointed in me. It was bad enough that I cheated myself by
not doing my best, but I set a bad example for the underclassmen. He was
right and I knew it. Even a “Burger With Everything On It” has a responsibility
to the team.
In the beginning, I ran to belong, but overtime my motivation changed. I ran
because I owed it to the team and to myself. Running was hard, hard work.
Painful, painful work. Few people had the fortitude to make themselves run
the distances we ran. We knew we were special not because of accolades – no
cheerleaders ever attended a meet – but because we knew we were pushing
ourselves to a degree that few people did. Even a “Burger With Everything On
It” knew it and took pride in it. I still run to this day.Thank you Coach Brang.

KNIGHTLIGHT
Franciscan Chrome - An Unforgettable
Golden Knight Graces Friedman Field
The Knight Sculpture that now towers over Friedman
Field was originally produced by artist, Sean
Guerrero, in 1989. Guerrero is famous for his largerthan-life chrome sculptures. The SFHS sculpture,
like much of his work, is made entirely of recycled
chrome bumpers from the 50’s and 60’s. Guerrero
indicated our sculpture was commissioned by
Sy Weintraub, who was a well-known Hollywood figure.
There seem to be no details on how or why the
sculpture was abandoned, but somehow it ended up
behind a warehouse in the City of Industry. Perhaps, it
was just our fortune to be found. The sculpture was first
discovered by a St. Francis Alumnus in 2010.
I have clear and positive memories of Coach Brang
during my distance running years at St. Francis High
School, 1972-1974. As a coach, Pete had an energetic
“tough love” style which inspired personal excellence
through hard work and discipline while instilling a
strong sense of team in all of us. Coach Brang was both a
caring mentor and a motivator, even as Dean of Discipline,
where he kept us in line and out of trouble – most of the
time! He had a quick sense of humor and was clever, once
convincing our cross-country team to run an extra-tough
weekend workout by hosting a pancake breakfast at
his home. I can tell you, it worked! Above all, Pete was
always interested and present when he was with
you – Pete was the most influential person in my years
at St. Francis.

Pete (calling him Mr. Brang is hard to lose) is that we, his
cross country team, often called him “Dad.” I don’t know
if he ever knew about that.We called him “Dad” for all the
reasons we love our dads. Although he had to play the
role of disciplinarian as Dean of Students, we were able
to see the other side of this man coaching a sport he truly
loved. We were able to see Pete during our years running
Cross Country, away from school and the strict role of
Dean. Although he placed goals and demands on us, just
like dads do to make us better people and develop into
men, Pete did it in encouraging and caring ways. I believe
he was proud of our accomplishments and believed in us
as runners and young men. He opened his home to us on
many occasions. He planned extra activities and events
for us, like the “Fun Run” up Tujunga Canyon followed by
a pancake breakfast. Pete was someone we went to for
advice. We wanted to do our best and honor him in that
way. Like a proud father, I remember him pointing out
his name on the record board at Mt. Sac prior to a meet.
Pete was truly dad to a few team members whose fathers
were absent and he is someone I will always remember.
It took three years to convince the former owners of the
sculpture to part with it. The original sculpture had a
griffin on its shield and the horse was a unicorn. Local
artists and metal fabricators were retained to transform
the sculpture into a piece worthy of representing our
school’s mascot – our beloved Golden Knight. The piece
was structurally and internally improved, hammered
copper was added to the shield and saddle, the school’s
logo was added, and the unicorn horn removed.
Finally, the sculpture, our Franciscan Chrome, was
polished completely by hand.
The sculpture was donated to St. Francis and the
installation took place on September 4, 2014. The
energy on campus the day of installation was
absolutely amazing. There were many moments which
made the four-year long process seem well worth the
significant effort.
The sculpture was donated by the Young and
McGoldrick families, who have had more than a dozen
St. Francis graduates over five decades with still
more to come. For them, the sculpture is not only an
amazing work of art, but also represents the strength
and resilience of the Golden Knights: we can be
humble and strong at the same time. SFHS has a long
and storied tradition on Friedman Field over which the
sculpture now stands. Our hope is for all who see the
sculpture to either remember or come to appreciate our
rich tradition that is St. Francis High School.

Living our Mission – Faculty Profile:
Jim O’Connor
You know the saying,
“Don’t judge a
book by its cover.”
Time and time again,
this simple pearl of
wisdom has beaten
the odds, and proven,
this adage is true.
One might apply this to the life lesson we all learned last
year in a classroom at St. Francis High School. Jim O’Connor,
an algebra and calculus teacher, with a reputation for
being strict, direct and demanding taught us all a thing or
two about humility, compassion and service. One might
say O’Connor developed the “hard” exterior his students
know having grown up in New York and having served in the
Navy during the Vietnam War where he did electrical work
on an aircraft carrier. Before becoming a teacher, O’Connor
worked as an electrician in the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
When Pat McGoldrick ’14 was charged with leading the
student blood drive at St. Francis, he did some research.
He wanted to get the full story – he wanted to see with his
own eyes, where the blood would go and get a sense of who
the beneficiaries might be. To his surprise, he also uncovered
a 20-year mission. When Pat went to Children’s Hospital,
he couldn’t understand why when he told someone
affiliated with Children’s Hospital, that he was a student
at St. Francis High School, they asked him if he knew Jim
O’Connor. And then they would follow up with, “Isn’t he
wonderful?” That wasn’t the first word that came to mind
when Pat thought of a math
teacher who ran a tight ship in
his classroom.
What Pat uncovered was an
example of Franciscan humility,
compassion and service at its
finest. You see, for the past
twenty years, Jim O’Connor
has been donating blood and platelets at Children’s
Hospital. In fact, he has donated more than seventy-two
gallons of blood and platelets since he first gave blood
back in 1989. CHLA estimates the value of his life-saving
gift – over $500,000 if the hospital had purchased the
blood and platelets. His name is at the top of a plaque
that honors exceptional blood donors at the hospital.
He is their top donor by a large margin. And there’s
more – Jim O’Connor volunteers three times a week
cuddling sick babies. He steps in when parents can’t – to
hold, feed and comfort their children. Why does he
do this? “I don’t want to see them alone. You can’t
do that.”
2015 Cardinal’s Awards
We are delighted to share the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was also
touched by the humble and compassionate service of Jim O’Connor.
He was selected as a 2015 Cardinal’s Awards Recipient.
The event will be held March 21, 2015 at the J.W. Marriott at LA Live.

So
maybe
we’ve
got
Jim
O’Connor’s cover all wrong.
Maybe he’s not so tough after
all. We do know, now more
than ever before, he models
St. Francis and those Franciscan
virtues we all hold dear, in ways
that make our humble hearts,
incredibly proud.
KNIGHTLIGHT
St. Francis
Alumni Association
Letter from the President
Dear Fellow Alums and Friends of St. Francis,
What a great time to be a Golden Knight! The 2014-2015 school year is well underway and St. Francis
High School is thriving. The Golden Knight Football Team was undefeated and secured an
Angelus League Championship and deep run in the CIF Playoffs. Our students continue to be
leaders in the classroom and in our community. The Code of the Golden Knight is echoed in all of
their wonderful accomplishments.
The SF Alumni Association had another successful Reunion Weekend this fall with our Hall of Fame
Football Game, Alumni Reunion Dinner on campus and our 26th Annual St. Francis Golf Classic
at Brookside Golf Club. Since it’s inception, the Alumni Association has awarded over $750,000 in
scholarships and financial aid to deserving students and families and with your continued support,
and those of other close friends of St. Francis, we are proud to continue this invaluable tradition
and live the powerful words of St. Francis of Assisi, “It’s in giving that we receive.”
I would like to thank our presenting sponsors of the St. Francis Golf Classic: Tim Stratz ’84,
Ted Shaw ’62 and Mark Miranti ’86. We are truly grateful for their support and thank all of those
who sponsored and participated in this great event. I am also honored to be able to serve on the
St. Francis Alumni Council with so many great alums. I would especially like to thank Tim Murphy ’94
and Andy Burghdorf ’00 for their tremendous support of our efforts and those of the Alumni and
Development Office. Well Done Knights!
I encourage all of you to get involved with the St. Francis Alumni Association and may God continue
to bless the Golden Knight community. Go Knights!

KNIGHTLIGHT
Distinguished Alumnus 2014
Mr. Thomas H. Barron ‘58
Webster defines “achievement” as “something that has been done
through effort; a result of hard work.” Often times we hear the word
“achievement” and begin to make assumptions about the scale
and nature. Perhaps society guides us, for better or worse, to make
these assumptions. Francis of Assisi once challenged his brothers,
“Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and
suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
Our 2014 Distinguished Alumnus brought new light to both
these ideas.
After a relatively “ordinary” four years at St. Francis High
School, Tom Barron graduated in the spring of 1958 and
enrolled at Pasadena City College. It was a short time later
that he gained admission to Santa Clara University, where
he studied finance, graduated, and went to work as a CPA
for what is now commonly referred to in public accounting
as Deloitte. After seven years in public accounting, he was
asked to join Transcon Lines as their controller. He continued
to work hard and rose through the ranks to Senior Vice
President of Finance. Tom’s next, and last, professional
endeavor would be with the Flying Tigers, the first
scheduled cargo airline in the United States. There he
assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer. He would stay
with the Flying Tigers until their purchase by FedEx in 1989,
which prompted his retirement.
Thus ended one chapter of achievement for him, but
unbeknownst to him, would begin a whole new chapter in
his life. It was shortly after his retirement that Tom began
to apply his professional skills for the benefit of others.
He was asked to work for Fr. Bud Kieser and Paulist
Productions as their treasurer. This company went on to
produce many powerful Catholic television programs and
films. Additionally, as a trustee, Tom lent his expertise to
Marymount High School, where his daughters attended.
He helped raise important funds to carry on the mission of
Catholic education in the West Los Angeles area.
Through his involvement and dedication to supporting
Catholic education, it was perfectly fitting that he be
asked by Cardinal Mahony to serve as treasurer for
the Catholic Education Foundation in 2004. CEF’s primary
mission is to ensure that a Catholic education remains a
reality for many of the underprivileged youth, primarily in
the inner city areas of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. More
important is that 98% of these students stay on track and
continue on at the college level. Beginning in 2010, Tom
answered the call to serve as President of the Board of
Trustees. Under his direction, the Catholic Education
Foundation grew its endowment from $100 million to $160
ST. FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL | ALUMNI AND DEVELOPMENT NEWS
million. During his last year as president, the foundation
awarded over $14 million in scholarships to over 8,000
students. Tom will reiterate that, among its many trustees
who serve and generate much of its revenue, there is not
one who wants or needs any glory. Through their collective
example, we come to understand what Francis said when
he proclaimed, “It is in giving that we receive.”
Tom achieved great things for himself and his family, but
in answering perhaps a greater call, his “achievement”
for others stands up as an extraordinary measure of
what happens when one begins simply by doing what
is necessary, and then suddenly what seemed
impossible, became possible.
It was our pleasure to welcome Tom back to St. Francis,
with his family and many classmates and friends by his side.
We are privileged for the gift that he is to us, and certainly
to those young men and women who have continued to
benefit from a Catholic education as a result of his hard
work. It was a true honor to present the Distinguished
Alumnus Award for 2014 to Mr. Thomas H. Barron ’58.

HALL OF FAME
SFHS Inducts Five into the Athletic Hall of Fame
Mr. Ernest Cruz Jr.
Ernie Cruz entered St. Francis High
School as a freshman in the fall of
1958. Ernie’s two sons graduated from
St. Francis – Ernie III in 1991 and Chris
in 1994. His daughter Angela is a 1998
graduate of Flintridge Sacred Heart
Academy.
Ernie attended Loras College in
Dubuque, Iowa and was drafted into
the army in 1967. He dutifully served
in the Vietnam War as a member of
the 101st Airborne Division. Ernie has
been involved in hospitality and service
all his life, a trait he learned early
from his parents. The Cruz family owned
and operated Ernie’s Taco House for
over 70 years. From 1992 until 1998,
Ernie was a director at Journey House,
an organization that offers support
services for emancipated foster youth.
He has also volunteered as a board
member of the US Naval Submarine
support group for the USS Pasadena,
and has been involved with the
Pasadena Tournament of Roses since
2002.
Since his boys were students at
St. Francis, Ernie has been a dedicated
servant to the high school in many ways.

Under the tutelage of Fr. Lawrence
Caruso,
the
family
sponsored
approximately 550 football banquet
meals and 350 staff lunches over the
years. For the past twenty-six years,
instead of enjoying the atmosphere of
Friedman Field with friends and family,
Ernie continues on the opposite side
of the field, chairing the “chain gang”
during football games.
Ernie has touched thousands of lives
with his soft, gentle demeanor, and his
generous heart. We are so grateful for
the friendship with which we have been
gifted, for the many years of service and
support to our athletic department,
and were so pleased to induct into
this year’s Hall of Fame, a true Golden
Knight, Mr. Ernest Cruz.
Mr. Dennis Harper ‘56
This Golden Knight found his way into
leadership positions early and often
at our then very young, six-year-old
St. Francis High School. A three-year
varsity letterman, Dennis was also busy
in other disciplines He was a member
of the Third Order, a lay Franciscan
service club, and was also co-editor
of the Knight Breeze, the student
newspaper. In addition to holding the
role of Student Body President, Dennis
was a standout on the gridiron. He
received First Team All Catholic
Conference honors at fullback in both
his junior and senior campaigns, and
helped take the Knights to our first
ever CIF Playoff contest. He played at
Pasadena City College following his
four years at St. Francis, and then came
back home to assist legendary Coach
Jack Friedman for three years.
Dennis and his wife, Susan have four
children, and reside here in town.
After serving dutifully as a member
of the United States Marine Corps,
Dennis graduated from the University
of California at Santa Barbara, and he
enjoyed a prosperous career in the
insurance industry here in his
hometown of La Cañada. We were
honored to induct into this year’s Hall
of Fame, Mr. Dennis Harper ‘56.
Dr. Tim Samuelson ‘63
Every once in a while, St. Francis
is blessed with a young man who
enters its ranks, and achieves truly
remarkable success on a variety of
levels. Tim is one of those Golden
Knights. Tim entered his freshman year
KNIGHTLIGHT
in the fall of 1959 and quickly invested
himself as a Golden Knight. From
the Honor Roll, to the California
Scholastic Federation, to Student
Council, to athletics – things that
Tim dedicated himself to each of his
four years, he emerged as a leader.
Throughout his time at St. Francis,
Tim lived out the Code of the Golden
Knight in all that he did.
Tim earned a total of seven varsity
letters during his tenure. He was a
three-year letterman in baseball. Two
years he helped the Varsity Knights
on the basketball court, earning team
captain honors as a senior. Finally,
he lettered in both his junior and
senior seasons in football, earning All
Conference honors on both sides of
the ball. St. Francis honored him with
our Athlete of the Year award in his
senior year.
After graduating, Tim was pre-med
at Stanford University, and went on to
USC to become a doctor. He served
the area of Anchorage, Alaska for
30 years as an emergency room M.D.
His accomplishments are extraordinary,
but as was written about him some
fifty years ago, Tim never wanted
personal triumph at the expense of
another, for the team was always first.
We were truly blessed and honored
to welcome Dr. Tim Samuelson ‘63
home, a true team player, and wish to
congratulate, as a member of this year’s
Hall of Fame.
of Golden Knight by his coaching staff.
Bruce was selected to the competitive
All Del Rey League First Team during
his senior season, where he helped the
Knights capture the league crown. In
addition to leading the relay team and
long jump, he was league champion in
both the 120 high hurdles as well as the
180 low hurdles events. For his efforts
he was awarded Most Valuable Runner
Honors, and received a scholarship to
the Air Force Academy, where he
continued to shatter records, until
injury forced him to retire. He
eventually received his degree from
the University of Massachusetts.
Bruce currently resides in the Phoenix
area, and we were thrilled to have him
make the trip back to St. Francis so that
he could receive this well-deserved
honor in person.
Mr. Robert Sheedy ‘67 &
Mr. Tim Sheedy ‘67
Some say that twins are nearly
inseparable, and in this case, it seems
the appropriate thing to do to induct
them together. This is not because
they are twins – as individuals, they
are equally deserving of the honor
bestowed. Tim and Robert were both
three-year starters for the Golden
Knights’ Varsity Football. They led by
example and everyone who played
with, or against, them admired them
for their toughness. Scrappy and
relentless, often going up against
players who outweighed them by
50 to 100 pounds, they never conceded
an inch. No one played with a bigger
motor or a bigger heart than these two
brothers.
Both earned starting positions as
sophomores, Tim at safety and Robert
on the line. Tim and Robert each
faced season-ending injuries this
year, but their early work helped
propel the Knights to a 13-0 record, a
league championship, and its second
consecutive CIF championship. In their
junior year the duo earned starting
spots again, and contributed on both
sides of the ball. As seniors, Tim and
Robert were two-way starters, Tim as a
tight-end and cornerback, and Robert
as an offensive lineman and linebacker.
Both were bestowed All League
honors and gratefully acknowledged
for their leadership by their coaches,
and named Golden Knights. Tim and
Robert were selected to play in various
post season All Star games.
The brothers traveled together, once
again, to the University of Arizona on
football scholarships, and played in
the Sun Bowl during their sophomore
season. Since that time, both have
returned to the area, become
successful businessmen in their
respective trades, and continue to
stay close with family. We remain most
grateful for their continued friendship,
and enjoyed having so many members
of the Sheedy clan at our Hall of Fame
game to pay tribute to Tim and Robert.
Mr. Bruce Pope ‘72
As the 1972 Sportsman of the Year
section of the Alvernian Yearbook
stated, “One of the finest leaders ever
to be given this honor, Bruce Pope
instilled the pride, determination and
desire to win that were necessary to
become champions.” This alum was
another all-around success on and
off the field. A strong student, Bruce
earned Honor Roll all four years, and
was a member of the National Honor
Society as a junior and senior. He was
also a member of the Student Council
for three years.
On the field, Bruce excelled in both
football and track and field. He was a
two-way starter at running back for the
Knights, and earned the respect of his
teammates, coaches and the league.
Bruce was named team captain, and
was also given the prestigious honor

SF and continue to have to this day are
my favorite memory!”
WINTER 2015 | 27
Best wishes to JP Ramirez ’05 and
his fiancée Melanie Mendoza on their
engagement. They will tie the knot
July 4, 2015 – cue the fireworks!
Steve Zadravecz ’89 and his wife
Tina live in Coto d’ Caza and have
been blessed with two kids. Steve, a
University of San Diego alumnus, is
an attorney.
Congratulations to Brandy and
Ben Acker ’93 who celebrated their
ten-year anniversary in May. They have
been blessed with three children:
Nathanael (6), Madolyn (2) and
Maxwell (8 months). Recently, Ben
was appointed Principal of Foothills
Middle School in the Arcadia Unified
School District. He had served as the
Assistant Principal for five years and
taught sixth grade in the school district
for eight-years. Ben also shared that all
of the Acker brothers are doing great!
Hernando Planells ’94 is the proud
father of two amazing kids: Preston
(14) and Gabby (11). Hernando is the
Assistant Coach for the Women’s
Basketball team at Duke University and
also serves as one of the team’s two
recruiting coordinators. He has worked
with the Boston Celtics NBA d-league
(development) team. He has also
coached overseas, primarily in Asia.
With his background, Hernando has
consulted and helped choreograph
basketball
scenes
and
training
actors in films like Coach Carter and
The Longest Yard.
Evan Siefke ’94 is a fireman and enjoys
woodworking and car building. He and
his wife Sandi have a daughter, Emma
and son, Evan. Jr. Great having you join
your classmates Reunion Weekend!
A shout out to Christian Bergman
’06, who made his major-league debut
with the Colorado Rockies on June 9
in a game against the Atlanta Braves.
Congratulations Christian.
September 6, 2014 marked the
start of a long, happy life together
for Violet and Paul Najarian ’04
who were married at St. Andrew’s
Church in Pasadena – congratulations!
Paul graduated from Menlo College
with a BA in Business Management
and a Minor in Finance. He works
as the area car sales manager at
Enterprise Car Sales. Last fiscal year,
he won an exceptional achievement
award with Enterprise – the first one of
his career. Paul played baseball all four
years at St. Francis and continues to
enjoy the sport – loves going to MLB
games and playing golf. He remembers
like yesterday, all the building that took
place while he was a student – from the
parking structure to the theater, Field
House and FieldTurf, our campus was
transformed during his time.
