The Heirloom Baby: Memories Forever
The first months, the
first years of a baby’s life
speed by quickly. Jill Burton
has a way to capture those
fleeting moments as an
heirloom.
Burton started her business,
The Heirloom Baby, in 2007.
She is an independent consultant
for Patty-Cakes.
“Babies change so quickly and
Patty-Cakes is a wonderful way to
secure a snapshot of your baby in
those early years,” Burton said. “My
mother had my impressions done
back in 1970 when I was 18 months old. And
they still hang on the wall in her home.”
Patty-Cakes shadow boxes continue to be very popular. They
are handcrafted in genuine wood and are available in a variety of
finishes and sizes.
The traditional set and the shadow boxes are her most popular
items. “I think the traditional set is popular for its simplicity. The
shadow boxes both display and protect,” she said. One plaque
features the hand impression while the other plaque features the
foot impression.
“Some sets have an opening for your child’s photograph. The
protective glass seals out dust and slides up and down to allow you
to touch your special memories,” Burton said.
“I love meeting people and their new additions. I love knowing
that, as they look at those impressions for years to come, they will
be so glad they took the time to call me,” she said.
One of the latest new services that’s causing a booming demand
from customers is bronzed impressions for their pets. “For those
people that have dogs or cats for their children, what a great way to
preserve a memory of them,” Burton said.
8 | southernfamilymag.com
Another addition
to The Heirloom Baby
product line is a new
mounting. “It’s a deskframe shadow box that
is beautiful and unique,”
she said.
Burton now can
use the hospital’s ink
impressions when a
baby is born. “People
with older children who
didn’t know about PattyCakes can still have a set
of impressions for their older
children using these ink impressions
from the hospital,” she said.
The Patty-Cakes impressions are the perfect gifts for Mother’s
Day. Burton can accept orders for Mother’s Day until March 18.
Burton sometimes goes to the customer’s home to do the
impressions. “For those Moms with newborn babies, this is big plus,
since they don’t have to get the little one out,” she said. Burton does
offer a discount to those customers who choose to come to her office
to make the impressions.
Burton’s commitment to her craft is good reason to have a
product from The Heirloom Baby. “This is a product I believe in.
The quality is unmatched. I treat each impression as though it were
my own children’s impression. These truly are heirloom pieces to be
passed on” to family generations.
Burton believes that The Heirloom Baby has been successful
because she “likes things that are unique and that you don’t see
everyday. These are truly unique.”

Places and Faces
Oh, the Joys of Marriage!
After thirty-seven years of marriage and raising two daughters
(who are both married with children) I’m still trying to get this
thing called marriage right! It’s kind of like the game of golf….just
when you think you’ve got it mastered, things can fall apart in a
hurry! Fore!!
It reminds me of a pastor who was invited to a fourth grade
Sunday school class to speak about their lesson concerning the
subject of marriage. He asked the class if any of them knew what
God had to say about marriage. Without missing a beat, little
Johnny spoke up and said, “Father, forgive them for they know
not what they do!” If the truth is known, he wasn’t far off! I’ll have
to admit that I didn’t know what I was getting into…I just knew I
had one of Cupid’s arrows going right through my heart.
To begin with, marriage is between a male and female who are
completely opposite. For example, during the wedding ceremony,
this is what usually goes through the minds of the bride and
groom: The bride is imagining how she must look to all her friends
in her lovely dress; the groom is trying to figure out how they make
those rented shoes so shinny! The bride is concerned that the music
didn’t start at the exact time; the groom is concerned that half the
football game will be over before he can get to a radio to get a
score update! The bride is focusing on lighting the unity candle
right on cue; the groom is trying to figure out how big he can make
by Dusty McLemore
the flame on the candle lighter! Can you see now why marriage is so
difficult? We’re dealing with two totally opposite people!
So, what is the secret to a happy and long marriage? After my
first few years of a shaky and volatile marriage, I discovered the
successful formula to a wonderful, happy marriage…Marriage takes
three! It takes a holy man; a holy woman and a holy God! Most
marriages won’t make it apart from that true principle.
Marriage itself produces oneness! God brings a man and a
woman together to be one flesh. God’s word speaks of this great
truth in Gen. 2:24, “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and
mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall become one
flesh.” This verse reveals a great principle in a successful marriage…
Leave, Cleave and Weave. First, the couple must LEAVE their
parents. Many never break the apron strings and this causes huge
problems. Secondly, they must CLEAVE to one another. They must
learn to depend and trust one another at all times. And thirdly, they
must WEAVE together. Marriage is a lifetime process of weaving
and meshing two lives together as one. It’s almost scary how much
you do mesh together in time.
I’ll close with seven (7) principles that will help any marriage
stay healthy:
1. Honor your vows
2. Make time for one another
3. Learn to forgive.
4. Avoid criticism of your spouse
5. Make marriage fun.
6. Pray for your mate.
7. Keep Christ at the center of your lives and marriage.
Try practicing these principles and see how much your marriage
steadily improves. Above all, seek the Lord’s help! After all, He is the
“Wonderful Counselor”!
Dusty McLemore has been the Senior
Pastor at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church
for the past eighteen years. He and his
wife Patsy are both lifetime residents of
Athens. They have two adult daughters
and six grandchildren.
Marriage is a lifetime
process of weaving
and meshing two lives
together as one.

leader in Key West shortly after his arrival on the island.
This grand historic inn underwent a $3 million dollar renovation
in 1996 and was transformed into a magnificent bed and breakfast.

Key West is only 2 miles by 4 miles, so finding your way around
is quite easy. Automobile parking in some parts of town is scarce, so
it’s better to opt for other modes of transportation. If you stay in the
historic district, it is easy to get around on foot.
Bicycling is a popular way of getting around. Eaton Bikes is Key
West’s best source for everything in cycling – from mountain bikes to
road bikes, from beach cruisers to tricycles. Their bike rentals include
free delivery and pick up.
If you’re not up to pedaling, a scooter is a fun and fantastic way
to tour the island. The Moped Hospital, established in 1979, is the
oldest scooter rental company in Key West. Their rental rates are
the lowest on the island and their equipment is some of the newest.
When you mention seeing them in this article, they’ll give you an
additional 25% discount!
A jet ski is great way to tour the island from the water. Barefoot
Billy’s has some of the latest model Yamaha Wave Runners to zip

A Wedding in Paradise continued
If you’d rather sit and relax while touring the city, choose
CityView Trolleys of Key West. Brides prefer the modern look and
comfortable padded seating of CityView Trolleys. The sleek look and
silver color make for nice wedding photos.
Key Largo is another romantic spot for exchanging vows. It is
the largest and most northern part of the keys. Key Largo is famous
for its intricate coral reef, the eco-wonderful everglades, spectacular
sunsets, and mouth watering seafood.
Azul del Mar, an intimate Florida inn, is the most exclusive
boutique hotel in Key Largo. Catering to adults only enables them
to offer couples a secluded, romantic hideaway.
Have fun fishing from the private pier or have Dominic, the
owner, book a fishing trip for you. Ask the captain to filet your catch
when you return, and you can grill it on the gas barbecue grill. There
are also restaurants in the area that will cook your catch and serve it
with side items to complete your meal.
Enjoy a Sunset Cruise to an Everglades wild bird sanctuary, a
snorkeling trip to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, or a
wilderness kayaking adventure, all departing from the dock at Azul
del Mar.
At sunset, the small and private white sand beach becomes awash
with the glow of pink and orange sunsets. After sunset, relax under
the thatch roof gazebos and enjoy the gentle tropical breeze as you
listen to the waves roll ashore.
Key Largo boasts the only living coral reef in North America
which is the 3rd largest reef in the world. It also has America’s first
undersea park. The clarity and shallow waters of this area make it an
ideal destination for viewing tropical reef fish close up in their own
environment.
The professional dive instructors of Keys Diver and Snorkel
Center will take you to see it all. They offer scuba daily diving trips
to the reefs and wrecks of Key Largo along with daily snorkel tours.
For locally caught fish cooked and served in a variety of
scrumptious ways, visit in The Fish House Encore. The tropical
outdoor patio provides an excellent setting for a rehearsal dinner or
small wedding reception.
The Fish House Encore was featured on The Food Network with
Bobby Flay and was voted Best Seafood Restaurant, Fine Dining,
and Overall Restaurant along with Best Key Lime Pie in the 2010
Upper Keys People’s Choice Awards.

THE GREATEST DAD IN THE BIBLE
By Rev. Ron Coriell, Principal Covenant Classical School & Daycare
It is no secret that families are falling
apart these days. The divorce rate is at 50%,
even among Christians! The children are
suffering too. Studies indicate that 75% of
the youth of church going evangelicals who
attend public schools will disavow their
faith during college. In other words, godly
descendants are disappearing at alarming
rates.
Why? It is the fathers. We are failing.
There is the record of a father named
Max Jukes, who lived about 200 years ago
in early America. He was an atheist, married
an ungodly woman, and lived an irreligious
life. History records that among his 540
descendants 310 died as paupers, 150 were
criminals, 7 murdered, 100 were drunkards,
and 50% of the women were prostitutes.
What a father with a failed legacy!
By contrast, a contemporary of Mr. Jukes
was a preacher named Jonathan Edwards.
He has been called “America’s greatest
theologian.” His legacy was vastly different.
Among his 1,394 descendants there were
13 college presidents, 65 college professors,
3 US senators, 30 judges, 100 lawyers,
60 physicians, 75 military officers, 100
preachers and missionaries, 60 prominent
authors, 1 vice president, 80 other public
officials, and 295 college graduates. What an
outstanding legacy this father left!
The Bible rightly says, “The memory of
the just is blessed,” Proverbs 10:7.
It is easy to see who was the best father
in the above comparison. But, who would
the Bible herald in its pages as “Best Bible
Dad?” Let’s see…
Adam sinned and plunged the whole
human race into sin. Noah got drunk
and was a poor example to his children.
Abraham was a liar and so were his son
Issac and grandson Jacob. King David was
an adulterer and murderer. King Solomon
womanized and built temples for his
hundreds of idol-worshipping wives. The
Apostle Peter denied Christ three times. The
Apostle Paul said he was the least of all the
disciples. Frankly, it is pretty difficult to find
a Bible dad who was awesome at fathering.
Recently I came across a little book
written about such a man in the Scriptures.
You have probably never heard of him. I
had not. His name? Jonadab. The book is
entitled The Promise of Jonadab: Building
January/February 2011
a Christian Family Legacy in a Time of
Cultural Decline, by E. Ray Moore and
costs less than $10.
The Old Testament records that Jonadab
was the son of Rechab, a Gentile. His name
means God is willing. He converted to
the worship of the Hebrew God, Jehovah.
Then he supported a new king, Jehu, who
cleansed his land of idol worshippers. But,
he was not sure that his sons and their
descendants would carry on in the faith.
They might fall back into drunkenness and
idolatry and suffer God’s punishment. So
he made three family rules to guard future
generations.
Amazingly, 250 years later, or eight
generations, his descendants were still
keeping those three rules! So what were
they?
The book of Jeremiah and chapter 35
records the story. Jonadab commanded his
sons not drink wine, ever. Furthermore, they
were to never live in houses or be farmers.
The reason for these last two restrictions was
Jonadab’s strong doubt. He believed the rest
of the ancient Hebrews would backslide into
sin and suffer God’s punishment. If his sons
lived in tents and were shepherds they could
move away easily and escape the judgment
of God. But, would his children keep his
three rules?
Jeremiah 35 tells the story. The prophet
wanted to make an example to the sinful
Israelites. So he called descendants of
Jonadab to a meeting place and put wine
before them. He commanded them to
drink. But, they refused, sighting the 250
year-old rule of their ancient forefather.
Then Jeremiah recorded the following.
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of
Israel… ‘Surely the sons of Jonadab…
have performed the commandment of their
father which he commanded them’….”
Then God made an incredible statement.
“…thus says the Lord of hosts, the God
of Israel: ‘Jonadab the son of Rechab shall
not lack a man to stand before Me forever.’”
Do you understand the ramifications of
this prophecy? There would always be
godly descendants of Jonadab somewhere
in this world that God could see. What
father would not like this to be said of his
descendants? I sure would.
Well, so what? We modern fathers must
learn from this ancient one, Jonadab. We
should so raise our children to keep godly
rules that will benefit them all their lives and
keep them close to God.
That challenge made me ask myself
“What rules should I pass down to my
descendants?” Here are 10 that I listed for
my family.
1. Accept Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
2. Join a Bible teaching church.
3. Study the Bible daily.
4. Pray daily with thanksgiving.
5. Memorize Scriptures for living godly.
6. Give and live as God commands.
7. Marry a godly, Christian spouse.
8. Christian educate the kids.
9. Pass along 1-8 to the children.
10. Live and die so God can say,
“Well done.”
In fact, I am going to direct my family
to put these rules on the back of my
tombstone, for generations to visit (I hope)
and read. It is my prayer that they will keep
all 10. If they do I then can hope to be
remembered as a great dad, like Jonadab.

Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival:
New headquarters, permanent gallery
Feathers already are flying for the seventh annual Alabama
Chicken and Egg Festival in Moulton on April 9-10, 2011.
The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival is a major source of
funding of the newly established Lawrence County Arts Council,
whose purpose is to serve as an umbrella for the cultural community
and to promote, coordinate and develop arts programs for North
Alabama for the benefit of artists and the community at large, Detra
Smith said.
Smith is president of the Lawrence County Community Arts
Board and gallery director.
The council has moved to larger office space at 552 Lawrence St.
in Moulton. The new address provides headquarters for the Alabama
Chicken and Egg Festival, a gallery that showcases local artists’ work
and a studio for art classes and meetings.
“The festival was fortunate to have a small, one-room office,
affectionately called the chicken coop, donated for the last few years
in the back of WALW radio station,” Smith said. “Before moving,
a stream of people was sharing that one, small room. There was no
space for meetings.”
The council’s location is on the town square’s south side. “Other
merchants around the square have welcomed us with great support,”
Smith said.
The Art Inspirations of the Valley visual arts gallery has opened
to create a greater appreciation for the arts and provide an outlet
for many artists who have been going outside Lawrence County for
support, Smith said.
“For several years, the festival and Lawrence County Arts Council
have been successful at providing music and storytelling in our
community,” Smith said. “We have had arts and crafts vendors at
the festival, but we saw a need for visual arts to be available yearround.”
At Art Inspirations of the Valley, original paintings in oil, acrylic
and watercolor will be on exhibit. “We also offer photography,
music and books by local writers,” Smith said. “We have some
beautiful hand-stained, carved gourds by Sandra Kay BarrettHoomani.”
At the gallery, Jaceena Shepard is showing Olivia, David, Amelia,
an original 16-by-20 inch oil portrait of her grandchildren. “Jaceena
is very good at oil, as well as watercolor,” Smith said. Shepard is
president of the Alabama Watercolor Society.
Another work by Shepard is Celebration in Rhythm, a 20-by-28
inch watercolor with bold colors and stylized sheet music and
jazz musicians.
Belinda Elliott is exhibiting Eleanor’s Church, her original 16-by16 acrylic painting.
Jaclyn Holland teaches children’s afternoon classes. The fee is $40
per month. “They learn drawing and painting techniques, about
past and present artists and the importance of their works,”
Smith said.
The gallery offers a monthly children’s workshop for $15 to $20.
“Minute Masterpieces” are offered for adults and teens. “Patrons
receive two to three hours of instruction and leave with a completed
painting,” Smith said. All supplies are included. Previous experience
is not required. Cost is $35 to $50.
Portrait artist Carol Terry conducts an ongoing, weekly adult
class. Cost is $100 per month. Shepard plans to offer a workshop
next spring.
Rooster Call, a new juried art exhibit, will begin in March. In
honor of the festival, all art will be roosters, chickens and eggs.
20 | southernfamilymag.com
“The works will be temporarily moved to the Lawrence County
Coliseum stage for the festival and moved back to the gallery for
the remainder of April,” Smith said. “A Best of Show artist will be
named to the Rooster Hall of Fame.”
For the call, artists from around the country will be invited to
participate and vie for cash and prizes. For entry information, send
email to [email protected].
Smith recognized the work of Vicki Morese, festival event
coordinator. “Vicki motivates everyone involved to work hard, cover
every base and see jobs completed,” Smith said.
“The Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival continues to grow and
each year brings a new aspect for festival-goers of all ages to enjoy,”
Smith said.
In 2009, “Down on the Farm” was introduced as a kid-friendly
area featuring tractors – ranging from antiques to today’s stateof-the-art farming equipment. “The addition of tractors helps to
introduce the younger generation to farming and its importance to
the state of Alabama,” Smith said.
Another addition was demonstrations by Southern Folklife
Artists. Quilters, farriers, basket and broom makers and chair
weavers attended the 2010 festival. “These demonstrations showed
how products were once made in the absence of today’s technology,”
Smith said.
An exhibit of live chickens, egg roulette contest, a geocaching
contest, bluegrass stage and motorcycle run have been incorporated
over the years.
Festival proceeds provide arts in education programs and funding
for the Lawrence County Arts Council building.

World-class storytellers will be on the campus of the University
of North Alabama in Florence, on May 20 and 21, 2011, to regale
expected crowds with tales of heart, humor, and heritage. The
University of North Alabama Front Porch Storytelling Festival is the
newest addition to festivals in the north Alabama area.
UNA and the Shoals area are certainly no strangers to festivals.
“The university hosts the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival
annually, and our area is home to many fantastic events like the
W.C. Handy Music Festival, Arts Alive, the Renaissance Faire,
and the Helen Keller Festival,” said Debbie Chaffin, director of
educational technology services at UNA and chairman of the
storytelling festival. Chaffin is working with a committee composed
of university personnel and community leaders to organize the
storytelling event.
“We’re so excited to have people like the great Donald Davis,
Carmen Deedy, and Dolores Hydock as featured tellers,” said
Chaffin. “We have an incredible lineup of artists, which includes
Syd Lieberman, Andy Irwin, Bil Lepp, and the husband and wife
team of Sparky and Rhonda Rucker. In addition, we hope to have
‘Alabama’s Best Storyteller,’ the incomparable Kathryn Tucker
Windham.”
Perennial favorite Bill Foster will be on hand to serve as master
of ceremonies and introduce the tellers. “As a professor emeritus,
Dr. Foster is one of our most beloved campus figures, and he is
an outstanding entertainer in his own right. We hope he can be
persuaded to tell a few stories of his own, and perhaps even bring
out his banjo.”

In addition to the storytelling planned for campus, organizers
have other events planned, including spooky ghost stories by
torchlight, and several daytime and evening cruises on the Tennessee
River aboard the paddlewheel Pickwick Belle.
North Alabama is already home to one storytelling festival in the
fall. Is there room for another?
“Oh, our intention is not to compete with the great festival put
on by Athens, Alabama,” said Chaffin. “They have led the way in
storytelling in north Alabama, and we hope that our spring festival
will complement their annual fall festival. The people of Athens
have been extremely gracious in sharing their experience with us
and they have been very encouraging. It would be difficult to pull
off this festival without their advice, and the advice of many other
festival leaders from across the country.”
Tickets for the festival will be available soon. Admission is $15
per day for adults; $5 per day for students. The tickets for the
Pickwick Belle cruises (which includes a light meal) will be $25, and
admission to the ghost stories is $15. The website, www.una.edu/
storytelling, has more information.
The University of North Alabama Front Porch Storytelling
Festival is co-sponsored by the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a
state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

4 Cornish game hens
Salt and pepper to taste
1 lemon, quartered
4 sprigs fresh rosemary
3 tablespoons olive oil
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
- Rub hens with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Lightly season hens with salt and pepper.
Place 1 lemon wedge and 1 sprig rosemary in cavity of each hen. Arrange in a large,
heavy roasting pan, and arrange garlic cloves around hens. Roast in preheated oven for
25 minutes.
- Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a mixing bowl, whisk
together wine, chicken broth, and remaining 2 tablespoons of oil; pour over hens.
Continue roasting about 25 minutes longer, or until hens are golden brown and juices
run clear. Baste with pan juices every 10 minutes.
- Transfer hens to a platter, pouring any cavity juices into the roasting pan. Tent hens with
aluminum foil to keep warm. Transfer pan juices and garlic cloves to a medium saucepan
and boil until liquids reduce to a sauce consistency, about 6 minutes. Cut hens in half
lengthwise and arrange on plates. Spoon sauce and garlic around hens. Garnish with
rosemary sprigs, and serve.
Panna Cotta
with Strawberry
Sauce
INGREDIENTS
11/2 cups milk
1 (.25 ounce) envelope unflavored gelatin
11/2 cups whipping cream
1/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 quart fresh strawberries, quartered
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup water
Directions:
- Pour the milk into a bowl; sprinkle the gelatin over the milk. Allow mixture to sit until
the gelatin softens, about 5 minutes.
- Combine the cream and 1/4 cup sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the gelatin
mixture; cook and stir until gelatin dissolves completely, about 3 minutes. Add the vanilla
extract. Pour the mixture evenly into ramekins; cover and chill at least 4 hours.
- To make the strawberry sauce, combine the strawberries, 2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4
cup sugar, and water in a saucepan over medium heat. While the mixture cooks, crush
the strawberries with a potato masher. Simmer the sauce until the sugar has dissolved
and the sauce has thickened, about 10 minutes; cool.
- Remove chilled ramekins from the refrigerator shortly before serving. Dip the bottoms
of the cups in warm water to help loosen the custard. Run a thin-bladed knife around
the inner edge of each ramekin to loosen the dessert; turn onto a dessert plate to
unmold. Spoon strawberry sauce over panna cotta to serve.

Superb catering services by Limestone Bay Trading Company
in historic Mooresville, Ala. please prospective brides and grooms,
business executives and families at get-togethers.
For catering, Limestone Bay can accommodate a minimum of 30
to a maximum of 250 guests. “We’ll do larger groups on a case-bycase basis,” owner Dee Green said.
Limestone Bay’s restaurant can seat 60, and a tented area will
hold larger groups, averaging 125 to 150 people.
“We most often offer buffets. Some parties request we have salad
on the table when they arrive and then go to the buffet,” Green said.
Groups with less than 40 can be fully served. If finger foods alone
are served, the fee is slightly more expensive because these are labor
intensive.
Several businesses pick up large orders, or Green can deliver for
employee meetings and luncheons, averaging from 30 to 90 meals.
“They give us a call when they have the date or a calendar so we
always know in advance,” she said. “We plan the food items according
to their budget. Some are box lunches, some hot meals.”
To decide on catered foods, clients choose among basic meats,
which are paired with salads, vegetables and fruits. “You can do so
many things with vegetables,” Green said.
Green always suggests at least a potato dish and green beans –
Southern style, of course. “Almost everyone eats those. Baked corn is
very popular, and yeast rolls a must,” she said.
Most people just want good food with a pleasing presentation,
Green said.
“We often hear stories of events people have attended and they
couldn’t identify some items served and even a few stories of events
running out of food. If we are given the correct number of guests to
attend, we will not run out of food,” Green said.
Beef Buchanan is Limestone Bay’s most popular meat. “It’s named
for the Cajun who taught me to cook it,” Green said. The beef is
slowly smoked, then finished off in an oven with red wine. “It’s thinly
sliced, fork tender.”
The second most popular is pulled pork on cornbread with a sweet
barbecue sauce ladled over. “We also offer a chicken poulet that gets
rave reviews,” Green said.
Green has presented fish fries and shrimp low-boils for business
functions and rehearsal dinners.
Limestone Bay has hosted events for desserts only and has a
vegetarian event in spring. Few items are fried, but Green will honor
requests – like fried pickles, the top request, that goes great with pork.
“We fried chicken for the wedding party for Channel 19’s Robert
Reeves. The group must be less than 40 because we slow, shallow fry,
the old fashioned way,” Green said.
Limestone Bay works with the bride to guarantee her guest list
number is very close to attendance. “Running out of food is not
always the caterer’s fault, but we have always had enough food here.
We offer to pack any leftovers for the family to take home,” she said.
For other catering needs, Limestone Bay can arrange for a variety
of other services, such as rentals of additional tables, chairs, linens,
lighting, cars, cakes, horse and carriage – even a bagpiper.
The prospective bride and groom will be happy for choosing
Southern Family Magazine
Limestone Bay Trading Company for its casual atmosphere that can
be simple, elegant or extravagant, Green said. “We are full service.
Most couples are employed full time or maybe not quite out of
school, and we can coordinate many details that free their time.”
Historic Mooresville is a haven for photographers. While
attending a wedding at Limestone Bay, a retired wedding
photographer told Green that “you would have to be a idiot to take
a bad photo here.”
Limestone Bay has hosted weddings, but many couples use the
Brick Church in Mooresville. Most weddings are held at churches
in Athens, Huntsville, Decatur and Madison.
Food, servers, floral services, setup and cleanup by Limestone
Bay combine for the perfect venue. “We just want them to show up
and enjoy their day…and when they leave, feeling it was more than
they expected,” Green said.
“Guests love the food. Typically, brides choose Southern fare.
Our food freshly prepared and beautifully presented,” she said.
Award-winning cheesecakes are often the choice for groom’s
cakes and even by some brides for wedding cake. “Brides today
don’t like all the rules. They know what they want, and just want
their guests to leave their wedding saying, ‘It was the best wedding
they have ever attended,’” she said.
“We work to help them achieve the event they want,”
Green said.
The Limestone Bay Trading Company restaurant is open
Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast
and lunch.
For catering needs, call Green at 256-353-6326 and schedule
an appointment. You also can follow Limestone Bay Trading

New Twist on an
Ancient Practice
When Rick Matthews, CEO of
Fractional Assets, Inc, moved his business
to Alabama, he immediately became
a member of the TN Valley Barter
Exchange. Having moved from an area
where barter exchanges are thriving, he
knew the economic power of organized
barter. Since becoming a member of
north Alabama’s locally owned, quickly growing exchange, he’s
been able to obtain office space, hotel rooms, restaurant meals and
corporate attorney’s services all through the power of trade. By
taking advantage of barter where possible, he is able to focus cash
expenditures into other areas. Bartering isn’t a new concept, in fact
it’s been around for centuries. But new technology has been added
to that ancient practice. There are over 400 exchanges across the
country.
TN Valley Barter Exchange was recently introduced to this area.
Susan Voiers, CEO of the locally owned company, has successfully
worked for herself for several years in different industries. She holds
a degree in accounting and has studied business management and
marketing. She is familiar with the challenges that can come from
running your own business, especially in today’s economic climate.
There’s nothing like being your own boss; but along with the
advantages, comes a list of responsibilities and challenges. Voiers
has seen many businesses launch. Some have grown and thrived,
unfortunately, some haven’t. Any resource available to offset those
can have a powerful effect on the success of a business. She knew
there had to be a way for businesses to find the resources they
needed and still take some of the financial stress off of them. She
turned to the ancient art of barter. That’s how the TN Valley Barter
Exchange was born. Voiers has always known the power of barter
and used it extensively, but there were drawbacks. Businesses using
barter had to find a “perfect match”. Becoming a member of a
barter exchange allows businesses to trade “round robin” style. “Our
Trade Consultants work one on one with each member to see where
we can help them save cash. They also have access to our online
trading floor 24/7. Think of it like having a prepaid credit card,
loaded and ready to purchase anything from any other member”
says Voiers. “A member offers something into our exchange,
another member purchases it. The seller can now use their credit to
purchase anything from radio advertising to print ads to optometry
to massage therapy. Basically, if you can buy it with cash, you can
buy it with barter. We have a very diverse base of business members
and more are joining every day. We also invite non-profits to join
us and cut some of their fundraising needs.”
28 | southernfamilymag.com
The International Reciprocal Trade Association, organized in
1979 sets the ethical standards for the industry. TVBE is a member
of IRTA and expects all members to uphold those standards.
Bartering is completely legal, but one misconception is that barter
is tax free. The IRS actually views trade tender as legal tender and
is treated the same as cash. Any sales are taxable and purchases
made with trade tender are tax deductable. TVBE keeps track of
all transactions for its members and issues monthly and year end
statements.
Barter, an idea whose time has come…. AGAIN!!

These cancers are named for the part of the body where the cancer
starts. There are 5 main types of gynecologic cancer: ovarian,
cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. Each cancer appears with
different signs and symptoms and has different prevention strategies.
All women are at risk for gynecologic cancers, and the risk increases
with age. These cancers do not have to be life-threatening; there are
early detection tools such as Pap tests.
Vaginal Cancer: Vaginal discharge or bleeding that is not normal, a
change in bathroom habits that is not normal, pain in the pelvis and
abdomen (especially when you have sex or urinate).
Pay Attention to Your Health
Be familiar with your family history, and tell your gynecologist if
there is a history of cancer in your family so he/she can recommend
preventive steps. Learn the warning signs of these cancers, learn
what is normal, and if you notice any unexplained signs or
symptoms, see a clinician right away. Some of these cancers have
no warning signs, so it is important to make an appointment for
an annual gynecologic exam and Pap test. Not all gynecologic
cancers have tests to identify the individual cancer. The Pap test can
screen for precancers and cell changes on the cervix. The human
papillomavirus (HPV) test looks for the virus that can cause cell
changes in cervical cancer.
The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that cause
cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. It is recommended for 11- and
12-year-old girls. It is also recommended for females ages 13 to
26 who did not get any or all of the vaccine shots when they were
younger.
What Are Some of the Signs or Symptoms
of Gynecologic Cancers?
Ovarian Cancer: Pain in the pelvic or abdominal area, back pain,
being tired all the time, bloating (area below stomach), change
in bathroom habits, upset stomach or heartburn, discharge from
vagina that is not usual.
Uterine Cancer: Bleeding that is not normal for you—bleeding
between periods, bleeding that is heavier or longer than 7 days.
Vulvar Cancer: Itching, burning, or bleeding on the vulva that
does not go away; color changes and skin changes on the vulva;
sores, lumps, or ulcers that do not go away; or pain in the pelvis
(especially upon urinating or having sex).
If you are diagnosed with one of these cancers, your clinician
will recommend a gynecologic oncologist, a doctor who has been
trained to treat cancers of a women’s reproductive organs. When
gynecologic cancers are found early, treatment can be effective.

New look to greet mothers and babies at ALH
Step into the Women’s Service Department of Athens-Limestone
Hospital in coming weeks, and you might think you’ve walked onto
the set of “Extreme Makeover: Hospital Edition.”
Over the weekends, crews are coming in to completely update the
appearance of the unit, from new tile and wallpaper to a new look
for the nursery.
“We are very excited about updating the unit with a new and
fresh concept,” says Donna Abernathy, Director of Specialty Services
and Nurse Manager of the Mother/Baby Unit.
Once it’s done, the look of the unit will match the state-of-the-art
care mothers and newborns receive at ALH, such as Labor-DeliveryRecovery-Postpartum (LDRP) suites.
ALH was the first hospital in North Alabama to offer the
most modern concept in obstetrical care, LDRP systems. The
private LDRP suites are designed so that each phase of the birth
experience takes place in one luxurious, family-centered setting.
The suites have cherry cabinetry, rocking chair, rooming-in bassinet
and Hill-Rom sleeper chairs provided by the Athens-Limestone
Hospital Foundation and the ALH Auxiliary. Well-designed cherry
headboards conceal the medical apparatus, elegant wall coverings,
crown molding and window treatments add to the ambiance.
Appearance is important but the true beauty of the ALH MBU
is the state-of –the art equipment. A recent donation made by a
private donor has allowed the unit to purchase two new incubators.
Additionally, a grant from the Alabama Department of Public
Health will provide equipment and training for the MBU staff to
conduct newborn hearing screenings.
While there, laboring mothers benefit from a state-of-the-art
monitoring system that allows nurses to monitor the mother from
either the bedside or the nurses’ station, and document her progress
at the bedside, allowing more time for the nurse to be at the
mother’s side.
In addition to the LDRP services, ALH offers prenatal and
postpartum services to mothers delivering there.
Childbirth classes taught by a certified childbirth educator are
offered monthly, and the Best Start program provides prenatal and
postpartum care coordination services for all participants. Home
January/February 2011
visits are furnished by the ALH Home Health Department and
are intended to contribute to infant health outcomes, improved
maternal-infant interaction and improved use of community
resources.
A breastfeeding class taught by a certified lactation consultant is
free to moms who deliver their babies at ALH, and nurses who are
certified bereavement counselors also provide support to parents
who have lost their babies. This nationally recognized program is
entitled “Resolve Through Sharing” and is sponsored by the ALH
Foundation.
ALH also provides every mother a gift bag with educational
materials and a variety of necessary and useful products, including
an instructional video on caring for your new baby, courtesy of
Pampers.
Abernathy says the mothers who choose to deliver their babies at
ALH find advantages they might not at a larger hospital.
“We are a hometown hospital, so when you come here, it’s like
you’re home, like you’re part of the family,” she says. “Because we are
small, we can spend lot more time with patients. They get great care,
and the feeling that we take care of them like they would want their
own families to be taken care of.”
Renovations to the ALH Mother/Baby Unit are scheduled for
completion in Spring 2011.

Huntsville Botanical Garden is a 120-acre garden
with thousands of bulbs, colorful spring annuals
and a woodland full of wildflowers, magnificent
dogwoods and amazing azaleas. As spring comes
alive in the Garden, your special event in The
Arbor will be just as spectacular!
The Garden offers many venues for weddings,
private parties and corporate meetings and
provides a tranquil, beautiful location. Two
indoor venues are available.
The Arbor is the larger of the two indoor
venues, has 3,600 square feet and can
accommodate up to 250 people for a receptionstyle event. Banquet-style seating accommodates
Walking Nights:
160 guests. For theatre-style seating, 200 guests can
be seated.
“I think one of the most special things
about The Arbor is that it requires very little
decoration. The built-in arboreal elements
make it so beautiful that you really only have
to focus on your tablecloths, centerpieces and
catering,” Director of Communications Nicole
Hogan said.
“The décor manages to take the beauty of
the Garden and bring it inside with vines,
moss and twinkle lights on the walls. The
domed, backlit ceiling features painted clouds.
All of this comes together to make The Arbor
truly elegant and different from anything else in town.”
The Arbor Courtyard may be rented in conjunction with The
Arbor. The courtyard provides extra space and can be covered with
a 30-foot tent. A pergola graces the grassy area of the courtyard.
“Many wedding vows have been exchanged under the pergola
outside in the courtyard and inside under the ‘small arbor’ as we
call it,” Hogan said.
Rental of The Arbor includes use of the catering kitchen and
standard furnishings. The catering kitchen has an icemaker, a
refrigerator/freezer, two prep tables, warming oven, two triple
sinks, storage racks, dishwasher and microwave. Standard
furnishings include both round and rectangular tables, white
padded folding chairs and moveable fountain.
Next to the kitchen is a service, garage-door style entrance,
making set-up and takedown a breeze.
“About a month ago, a large wedding was held in The Arbor -much bigger than the building alone could accommodate. So, we
opened up the large service door that leads from The Arbor to the
courtyard and put up a huge tent in the courtyard area. Our client
also heated the tent, to ensure that her guests were warm since it
was November,” Hogan said. “
“This setup truly doubled the area of The Arbor and was lovely
both in the tented area as well as the inside. Food and tables were
inside, while comfortable seating, a dance floor and the disc jockey
were under the tent. It was an amazing event! This same, exact
arrangement would be perfect for a large party of any sort.”
The rental fee for both The Arbor and Murray Hall includes an
on-site hostess for the duration of the event. “This is something
that many facilities charge extra for,” Hogan said.
Long-time garden visitors will recognize Murray Hall as the
original visitors’ center. Murray Hall has 2,700 square feet and its
capacity for a seated dinner or meeting is 75. With a receptiontype setting, it accommodates 120 people and can handle 75 with
theatre seating.

A wedding is an important event at Longing For Home Bed and Breakfast, located
in Rogersville, Alabama; so special that the Maloneys only book one wedding a month.
“We want to do everything we can to make each wedding, whether large and
elaborate or small and intimate, the best it can possibly be for each bride and groom,”
says Betty Maloney, owner and wedding coordinator.
There are several beautiful sites for creating a truly memorable wedding and
reception. Whether it’s our gazebo, antebellum chimney, magnolia trees and
wildflowers, creek or poolside, brides have plenty of lovely sites to choose from for the
wedding of their dreams.
Longing For Home offers several packages to choose from when planning for the
wedding. They have accommodations for the wedding couple, out of town guests and/
or exhausted parents of the newlyweds. The Maloney’s warmth and assistance make the
wedding a wonderfully, pleasant experience. They often receive letters of thanks from
their guests. One happy couple writes, “Thanks for the hospitality. The wedding was
great and the setting was wonderful. Thanks for all that ya’ll have done for us.”
Southern Family Magazine
Longing For Home features three romantic guestrooms, a
sleeping porch and common areas. The theme of each guestroom is
reflected in the names...Sunshine Daydreams, Country Graces, and
Simple Pleasures. Amenities in every room include Select Comfort
beds, mini-fridges, fireplaces and private baths.
Sunshine Daydreams includes a luscious whirlpool tub and a
romantic balcony overlooking a lovely flower garden and pond.
Country Graces has several antiques including a 150 year old
claw foot tub and a 200 year old mantle giving it a “stepping back
in time” feel.
Simple Pleasures, although the smallest of the rooms is
luxuriously appointed and features a cozy reading/snuggling nook
and a European style tub designed to “soak your cares away.”
The Sleeping Porch goes back to a time before air conditioning
when folks slept on grandma’s back porch after a long hot day. It
shares a powder room on the first floor but has a private shower. So
guests can awaken to the songs of birds and sounds of nature.
The newest amenity added to the already long list is an over the
top hot tub. Bring your favorite CD to play as you stargaze or
watch deer grazing in the pasture and woodlands which surround
this lavish spa tucked away in the beauty of nature while the
stresses and strains of life float away.
Guests are encouraged to enjoy the common areas such as the
library, living room, porches, swimming pool, gazebo, lawns and trails.
The Library is well stocked with books, novels, other reading
material, movies, games and comfortable chairs. Winding trails run
through woodlands and pastures beside a lovely creek. Wildflowers,
birds, red fox, and deer are common sights. At the right time of
year you may even see an eagle soaring above the open pastures.
The big country breakfasts of eggs, sausage, biscuits, French
toast, specialty breads, carrot cake pancakes; juice, coffee, teas
and more are something that several guests have commented on
specifically. Pam, a self-proclaimed bed and breakfast connoisseur
stated “Betty’s breakfasts are the best I’ve eaten in Alabama,
Tennessee, and Mississippi!”
Betty and her husband, Bill, enjoy sharing information about
local attractions with their guests…shopping opportunities in
historic Rogersville, the numerous attractions throughout North
September/October 2010
Alabama and Southern Tennessee, fishing and boating on Wheeler
Lake, golf courses and more.
The Maloneys purchased this1880’s style farmhouse in 1999.
Although the house was in excellent condition, they made a few
renovations and the house is now both their home and their bed
and breakfast inn.
On January 1, 2011 Longing For Home will celebrate its second
anniversary. This warm and cozy Bed and Breakfast has already
earned a place on Heartland Trails Top Ten Bed and Breakfasts in
Alabama List.
“A State of Mind, A Place of Grace, A Way of Life”* is a perfect
description of the spirit of Southern hospitality guests experience
at Longing For Home Bed and Breakfast in the beautiful Tennessee
Valley in Rogersville, Alabama.
Guests from 25 states and five foreign countries have enjoyed the
Maloney’s hospitality.
“It is a peaceful retreat in a wonderful setting and the food is
delicious...it was simply the best place ever.” Say Mary and Gary
from London, England.
Longing for Home is a perfect location for weddings, as well as
other special events. Many locals turn to Longing For Home for
their special events. For instance, residents of a local assisted living
facility experienced a Victorian Style Tea for Valentine’s Day.
Concerts, family and class reunions all find Longing For Home
the perfect venue for their events. Consider Longing For Home
Bed and Breakfast for any special occasion; not only for weddings,

working at home.”
Most of the home furnishings are
located at 202 Main St., while novel gift
items, decor and accessories can be found
next door at 204 Main St.
“Noble Passage is family-oriented and reverts
back to the time when service stood behind sales,”
McDaniel said. “We believe in getting back to
basics.”
“Our jewelry is the hottest item we’re carrying
right now,” McDaniel said. Noble Passage sells Waxing
Poetic, Pure Sanctuary by Tyler and Lenny & Eva. “We
have a jewelry register so that our customers can register for
the pieces that they want. These jewelry items make great gifts for
any occasion, but would be really special for Valentine’s Day.”
Waxing Poetic offers unique, personalized and handmade jewelry
in a wide range of sterling silver and mixed metals. Pure Sanctuary
merchandise consists of sterling silver and 24k gold-plated vintage
crest pendants, charms, initials, necklaces, bracelets and more.
Beautiful leather accessories by Lenny & Eva have interchangeable
sentiments.
In addition to the jewelry register, a bridal registry also is available.
Custom gift baskets can be shipped or delivered locally.
Spring is just around the corner and Noble Passage is prepared with
suggestions and new ideas to freshen up your home. New shapes in
lighting, fun patterns in pillows and fabrics and unexpected details in
all home accessories and décor are waiting for you.
“Our designer, Rachel Willis, American Society of Interior
Designers (ASID), is always on hand to assist,” McDaniel said. “We
offer complete design services.”

Noble Passage offers custom-designed window treatments and
fabrics. They also carry modern and antique Persian rugs.
Furniture lines include Vanguard, Hekman, Emerson et cie’,
Theodore Alexander and many more. Lamps by Wildwood,
Emerson et cie’, and Reliance are available.
“We do have a few antiques that I brought back from a trip to
England. However, most of what I carry are timeless pieces made to
look old,” McDaniel said.
“A popular item for the home are the bullet-mirrors in sunflower,
gold metal frames, and beautiful sunburst–shaped mirrors made
from recycled magazines,” McDaniel said.
All-natural soy candles by Northern Lights and Ergo make gifts
that will please for any occasion.
An unusual gift found in Noble Passage is the original Sweep
Dreams broom, made in the mountainous jungles of Thailand.
These brooms are made from 100% renewable sorghum and
bamboo, dyed with natural non-toxic colors and assembled by
workers under fair labor conditions and compensation.
“The brooms have seeds and buds in the bristles; and according to
legend, they bring good fortune for the coming year,” McDaniel said.

Home and Garden
First of all, we the staff of Granada Apartments want to tell you
how much we appreciate our residents. We know that sometimes
it may be difficult to put into words, so we decided to take
advantage of this article to do just that.
In fact we want them to know that they are part of our
family, and that truly makes us happy and proud to be a apart of
Granada Apartments, and the fact that they have chosen Granada
for their home really means a lot to us.
We have learned that people tend to associate with other people
who are like them. So while we have different types of residents
who have come to us from many sources, there is nothing like a
previous resident returning to their home at Granada Apartments.
We know a good neighbor can make all the difference in enjoying
your home and many develop life long relationships.
Residents find that some of the most enjoyable features at
Granada Apartments are the spacious floor plans, with their own
front and back doors, large picture windows over looking the
beautifully manicured grounds and the lively friendly atmosphere
where people care about one another.
If a change is in your future or someone you know, we invite
you to come view our tastefully decorated model, and our award
winning grounds nestled in the most sought after community in
the heart of south east Decatur, where a warmth and generosity of
spirit greets you.
