Barbara Macri-Ortiz Mexican Consul Berenice Diaz Presiding Judge of the VC Superior Court Brian Back (r) with scholarship recipient Melesio Juarez (c) and his parents. Melesio Juarez (c) with members of VC MABA and Keynote Speaker Luis J. Rodriguez (r). The Mexican American Bar Association of Ventura County held their 35th Annual Scholarship Dinner Friday, October 18, at the Courtyard Marriott in Oxnard. Attended by almost 200 people, the ceremony recognized the contributions of outstanding individuals in the community and awarded scholarships to exceptional local students. The event also helped raise funds for the VC MABA scholarship program, which supports students who are pursuing careers in the legal field. This year's Keynote Speaker was Luis J. Rodriguez, the first Latino and the first public defender to be appointed President of the California State Bar. The first person in his family to attend college, Rodriguez joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office and has been there since 1994. He served as president of the Mexican-American Bar Association of Los Angeles County in 2001. He was also president of the California La Raza Lawyers Association, president of the Latino Public Defenders Association, a member of the California State Board of Education and chairman of the State Bar of California's Council on Access and Fairness. Mexican Consul Berenice Diaz was the event's special guest. Previously the Chief of Staff to the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Mexican government, Diaz is currently the official representative of the Mexican government in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties. Diaz is a long-time diplomat who has worked Luis J. Rodriguez in the multilateral arena for over 15 years, overseeing Mexico's bilateral relations with countries in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East and Europe. This year's Alice McGrath Warrior for Justice Award was presented to long-time MABA member and supporter Barbara Macri-Ortiz. A wellknown attorney in the community, Macri-Ortiz worked in legal aid for ten years. She then went on to open a community-oriented solo practice, focusing on employment, housing and education. Macri-Ortiz previously worked as an attorney with the United Farm Workers after obtaining her licence and helped expand the UFW's legal apprenticeship program. “Macri-Ortiz has demonstrated the essence of this award and is an inspiration to many in our legal and general community,” VC MABA Foundation President Rebeca Mendoza said, adding she has been a tireless and effective advocate for affordable-housing and instrumental in the development of Cabrillo Economic Development's Villa Cesar Chavez housing complex which provides affordable housing in Oxnard for families and individuals working in agriculture in Ventura County. “This year's scholarships were awarded to five extremely qualified students who are among the many exceptional applicants who applied,” VC MABA President Lou Kreuzer said. This year's scholarship recipients included Joseph De Leon, Jorge Figueroa, Melesio Juarez, Gabriela Macias, and Janette Magdaleno. De Leon, a Ventura native, will attend UC Davis Law as a member of the Class of 2016. His interest in the law peaked when he interned for attorney Vanessa Frank-Garcia's immigration firm. De Leon empathized with the struggles of the many students he assisted with immigration issues through the Deferred Action program. He hopes to assist the undocumented “emerge from the shadows of disguised identities and manual labor toward citizenship and the fulfillment of their ambitions for an ordinary life.” Figueroa, a native of Michoacan, Mexico, migrated with his parents to the U.S. when he was only 10 years old. Figueroa will be attending California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with the hopes of acquiring the knowledge to fund his own non-profit organization. “I hope to aid Latino students in my community with education, emotional and legal issues that they face which impede them from them gaining a proper education like any other student,” Figueroa said. Juarez, also an immigrant of Mexico, started working with his parents picking oranges at the tender age of 11. He is currently a Senior at Oxnard's Pacifica High School and also taking courses at California State University Channel Islands. Juarez continues to work in the fields and hopes to attend law school and to be able to advocate for civil rights, immigration and education issues in the community. A Mexican immigrant, Macias is a member of UCSB's graduating class of 2014. She hopes to become a certified court interpreter after she graduates. An intern with the United Way of Ventura County's Community Impact program, Macias hopes to help the Spanish-speaking community have access to the legal system by providing them with much needed court interpretation to ensure their voices are heard. Magdaleno, a mother of five and paralegal, hopes to graduate from Ventura College of Law in May 2015. Growing up in the La Colonia neighborhood of Oxnard, Magadaleno, grew up fast and had to work to help provide for the family at age of 13. She is a volunteer at El Concilio and Photos by Valentin Mendoza MABA, and currently works as a paralegal with Rounds & Sutter, LLP. “VC MABA has existed for well over thirty years in our county. Its current membership is comprised of attorneys who practice in a wide variety of fields, law students and members of our community. The association is committed to the advancement of the legal profession and the empowerment of the Latino community through advocacy and the promotion of equal justice,” VC MABA incoming President Lorane Bailon said. "The education of our youth is an issue that is important to us. We hope that our event continues to grow and were are able to help even more students in the years to come," Bailon said. VIDA NEWSPAPER 10-24-13 Page B2 MORE THAN ONE IN FIVE ARE FIRST OR SECOND GENERATION U.S. RESIDENTS Generally speaking, income and other measures of achievement, such as education, increase between first and second generation U.S. residents. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 36.7 million of the nation's population (12 percent) were foreign-born, and another 33 million (11 percent) were native-born with at least one foreign-born parent in 2009, making one in five people either first or second generation U.S. residents. The second generation were more likely than the foreign born to be better educated and have higher earnings and less likely to be in poverty. In 2009, 59 percent of the native-born 25 and older with at least one foreign-born parent had some college education and 33 percent had a bachelor's degree. That compares with 45 percent of the foreign-born who had some college and 29 percent who had a bachelor's degree. "This suggests that the children of immigrants are continuing to assimilate over time as they have in past generations." Additionally, second generation Americans were less likely than the foreign born to have less than a high school degree; 12 percent of the second generation had less than a high school degree compared with 31 percent of the foreign-born population. These findings are from the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement's Foreign-Born Population of the United States: 2009, which provides a range of social and economic characteristics for the foreign-born population. This is the only Census Bureau data source that provides profiles of the foreign-born by generation. Of those 15 years and older who worked full time and year-round, the second generation had higher median earnings ($42,297) in 2008 than the foreign-born population ($32,631). Likewise, the second generation tended to have overall higher earnings; 42 percent of the second generation earned $50,000 or more, compared with 31 percent of the first generation. The Among Friends Adult Day Health Care Center announces the sponsorship of Adult Day Care Food Program.
