LUCIAN SAILORS St. Lucian Olympic scholar Stephanie Devaux-Lovell put St. Lucia on the map for the UK sailors at the 2011 UK Nationals which took place on August 27th to September 2nd in Weymouth, England. One of only two foreign competitors in a fleet of 74 sailors in the junior 4.7 laser class, Stephanie finished 2nd place overall behind the winning Dutch National and1st in the female class. Although aiming to finish in the top 20 Beth “learned a few big lessons from a few costly errors” and will continue to work on her weaknesses as she trains harder than ever back home on St. Lucian waters. Beth’s participation in the UK Nationals closely followed an Olympic test event, a warm up regatta scheduled one year before the Olympics in which 50 of the best sailors in the world compete for the top 39 seats which would qualify for London 2012. cont’d on Page 3 | www.igymarinas.com Stephanie D evaux-Love ll INSIDE FACE OF IGY - ULI IGY TO ATTEND BOAT SHOWS INFO ON THIS YEAR’S BILLFISH TOURNAMENT IGY WELCOMES NEW TENANT SEPTEMBER 2011 | ISSUE 22 Surely the best known face in the Marina! IGY RBM - FACES Uli the position of the President of the SLSA (Saint Lucia Sailing Assoc.) which has encouraged and helped young St.Lucian sailors to achieve their goals on the international regatta scene. St. Lucia sailing coach, Max Todd, is very pleased with the development of sailing in St. Lucia. “Considering that we come from such a small island with a very small community of sailors with such a small budget, to be sailing at such a high level on an international stage is a considerable achievement.” Earlier in the summer the St. Lucia Sailing Association sent its newest international sailor, 18 year old Scott Anthony with team mate Stephanie Devaux Lovell (16) to the ISAF Youth Worlds in Croatia where 68 countries were represented. Scott placed 48th and Stephanie finished 30th overall. OPEN HOUSE end of September when more information about how you too can be a sailor, will be shared and demonstrations of keel boat and dinghy sailing will be given. For more information please contact the Administrator of the Youth Sailing Programme, Lily Bergasse, at the St Lucia Yacht Club. The St. Lucia Sailing Association congratulates St. Lucia’s sailors for their successes over the last few months. SLSA is in full support of the SLYC Youth Sailing Programme and its coaches and together they are working to keep St. Lucian sailors in the forefront in Caribbean sailing and to get more St. Lucians involved in sailing as a National Sport! Scott A nthony cont’d from Page 1 Beth just missed this opportunity with an overall result of 40th but will carry the experience and the lessons learned to the ISAF Worlds in December where she will get another stab at qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. Scott has since been back to the waters in St. Lucia helping with the SLYC first ever Summer Sailing Adventure camp which was a grand success: summer holiday fun for 40 adventurers who spent wonderful days in the sun on the Yacht Club field, playing cricket and football and on the water sailing and kayaking. The St. Lucia Youth Sailing Programme will be continuing regular training sessions this week and starting in October will offer beginner sailing lessons for children 7 and older as well as for adults. The Yacht Club will be hosting a SAILING PRESS RELEASE Welcome to our new tennants who will be moving into the previously named H2O. With a deck extension & renovations the new Bar & Restaurant Ocean Club is sure to be the place to go. ovell x-L ie Devau Stephan CUSTOMS BROKERAGE HOOK UP IN ST.
