The exciting new community event with your support will hopefully continue for many more years to come. Gaff Rig is a traditional sailing rig which for centuries propelled working craft, sailing ships and yachts alike. It is distinguished by its four sides to the main sail, the top side being held aloft by the ‘Gaff’, usually a wooden spar. The Gaff Rig fell from popularity after the more efficient Bermudian Rig was developed FERGUSON SOLICITORS ADVERT allowing for much faster yachts and easier upwind sailing. This remained the status quo FULL PAGE for many years until a resurgence of interest The organising committee would like to thank Ards and North Down Borough Council Portaferry Regeneration NIOGA Portaferry Sailing Club, Ferguson Solictors and Airphone Communications for their kind donations and support. A special thank you to all the volunteers and emergency services and the residents of Portaferry and to anyone else assisting with the festival. in the older and by now almost extinct Gaff Rig occurred in the 1960’s. The Old Gaffers Association was formed to give a likeminded body of people a place to share the knowledge and skills of traditionally rigged craft, of both traditional wooden construction and more modern materials. As an association we also like to enjoy the fun of the traditional sailing movement. No boat is required (nor rejected), as all you need is an interest in traditional craft, sailing and a bit of craic and then you are welcome to join the Northern Ireland contingent of the OGA! Youth Project The Northern Ireland Old Gaffers Association are delighted to team up with Portaferry’s St Columba’s College for the first ever ‘OGA Youth Project’ in conjunction with Portaferry Sails and Sounds - Classic Boat and Music Festival. Six pupils from St Columba’s will get the unique opportunity to have a day’s sailing experience aboard ‘Vilma’, a 60’ Topsail schooner. Training has been provided in the school before the event by qualified instructors, who will spend the day aboard teaching the students about the traditional vessel and the skills to sail her. The aim is to send the students away with an experience they will never forget, and hopefully, pursue an interest in sailing, maybe even in traditional sailing! illustration winners - Carrie Bell age 11, Timothy Reid age 11 Rory Blaney age 11 all pupils of Kircubbin Intergrated School Since opening in 1973, Ferguson & Company has built an exceptional reputation across all aspects of the legal landscape. • Marine Litigation • Matrimonial • Insurance Defence • Mediation Services • Commercial Litigation • Corporate • Conveyancing • Commercial Property • Wills and Estates • Health & Safety • Personal Injury • All Ireland Service Belfast Portaferry Dublin 7th floor Causeway Tower 9 James Street South BT2 8DN 14 The Square BT22 1LW 77 Benburb Street Dublin 7 T +44 (0)28 9590 1761 T +44 (0)28 9590 1761 E [email protected] E [email protected] E [email protected] fc-law.co.uk TO TARA CARAVAN PARK, SILVER BAY CARAVAN PARK TO BALLYQUINTIN POINT ST.
