This is due to the dynamic transformations in all spheres of people’s lives. The extremely interesting world of diversity and opportunities can also be ruthless and cruel and hence elicit the feeling of threat and insecurity. The University of Security, as an institution with a clearly defined profile which is also visible in the school’s name, has embarked on a mission to educate for safety, in a broad sense of the word. Our goal is to train specialists directly and indirectly responsible for personal and public safety as well as safety and security promotion. Moreover, we remember that studying is not only the time for acquiring skills and knowledge but also the time for self-development. Therefore, our University offers innovative forms of education which are realized by our outstanding teaching staff. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses guarantee an intellectual adventure, bring new challenges and creative stimulation. They assure comprehensive development which is crucial for students’ future careers. Our hope is that studying with us will be an unforgettable journey to knowledge and understanding. I wholeheartedly recommend studying at the University of Security. Rector Andrzej Zduniak, Ph.D. 4 ABOUT POLAND A nation with a glorious past and promising future. Poland’s influence on the global stage is growing. A driving force in the new Europe with a skilled workforce and an economy increasingly attractive to foreign investors — Poland is making its statement. Poland lies in the heart of Europe. There are 38 million people living in Poland, which makes it the 33rd most populous country in the world. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometers, which makes it the 9th largest country in Europe. Poland is bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east; and the Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast - a Russian exclave, to the north. 5 ABOUT POLAND Poland has a long and glorious history, which is closely connected with its struggle for independence. Polish people have a very strong national identity which helped them survive during 123 years of partitions of Poland. Poles are also very proud of their newest history: Poland was the first country in Europe which got rid of communism. It opened doors for other countries to regain their sovereignty thanks to the Solidarność movement, whose leader, Lech Wałęsa, later received Nobel Peace Prize as an honor to the national movement. Poland has one of the fastest growing economies among Central European nations, with an annual growth rate of over 6.0%. Over the last decade, tremendous overall economic progress lead Poland to the 21st place in the world ranking in terms of GDP. Forecasts show further economic growth which means Poland is likely to continue to move up in the ranking. 6 ABOUT POLAND Poland is one of Europe’s youngest societies - half of the population is below the age of 35. Moreover, it is the second country in Europe in terms of number of students. Poland has a modern and developed system of education. There are 126 state higher education institutions including 17 universities, 18 universities of technology, as well as 301 private schools of tertiary education. They employ over 100 thousand academics; half of them hold a Ph.D. degree. Over 40 R&D centers and 4,500 researchers make Poland the biggest R&D hub in Central and Eastern Europe. International companies are attracted to Poland because of its highly qualified work force, support of authorities, and the largest market in Central Europe. 7 ABOUT POZNAN Poznan (Latin: Posnania; German: Posen) is a city in west-central Poland with over 570,000 inhabitants. It is Poland’s fifth largest city and fourth biggest industrial center. Located on the Warta River - the third biggest river in Poland, it is one of the oldest cities, a vibrant heart of trade, industry, and education as well as an important historical center. It is also the administrative capital of the Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) Region. Poznan is one of the biggest academic centers in Poland. There are several state universities and a number of smaller, mostly private colleges and institutions of higher education. During an academic year about 150,000 of students live in Poznan, which counts for a huge part of the city’s population. This is why Poznan is a real city of students. Poznan is also the center of numerous international events. These include both cultural and sport happenings. 8 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY The University of Security in Poznań (in Polish: Wyższa Szkoła Bezpieczeństwa WSB) was founded on December 17th, 2004, by an ordinance of the Ministry of National Education and Sport and registered as a non-public university-level institution on February 11th 2005 – which, at the same time, is the day when the school commenced its educational activities. The school’s main activity is providing undergraduate as well as postgraduate taught programmes such as National Security, Internal Security, Health Scurity, Pedagogy and Management. WSB alumni will have the knowledge of social pathology prevention, internal, national and health security issues as well as the ability to realise security-promoting projects. Moreover, the University of Security is the first Polish and one of few European institutions whose curriculum encompasses the issues of personal security and whose goal is to equip students with skills which would render them highly attractive on the European labor market. Importantly, the school’s graduates have the potential of becoming Poland’s first professional safety managers. Indeed, WSB is the first institution of higher education training safety professionals and promoting security on personal, domestic and national level. 9 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY The University of Security is an institution with a holistic approach to students, i.e. it is concerned with students’ professional and personal growth – aims which are realized through encouraging student participation in various personal and social security projects. Undoubtedly, the issues of personal and social safety are the school’s main research and consultancy areas. Additionally, WSB seeks and values students’ active involvement in all its projects. Finally, the school builds up its reputation and traditions on the basis of its educational successes and pro-social activities. The University of Security takes personal responsibility for the quality and effects of its education as well as the professional preparation of its students. Moreover, the school prides itself on its exceptional concern for the level of qualifications and professional development of its academic staff. WSB is also responsible for advocating security and creating a model of safe life – to be achieved through the cooperation with external agencies for which safety is of paramount importance. 10 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY The University of Security aspires to be perceived as an institution ready to respond to various challenges. It also understands and recognizes modern educational needs – education compatible with the today’s labor market expectations. The school is dedicated to developing and introducing innovative solutions which are beneficial to students and the whole academic environment and whose purpose is to eliminate educational passivity and negligence. Therefore, the school’s mission is to: • spread humanistic values; • base education on professional knowledge and skills; • propagate personal and public safety; • educate for safety. 11 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY The University of Security is a truly European institution. Special emphasis is placed on students’ personal development in order to allow them to fully participate in the cultural life of our community. The University of Security realizes its educational goals through: • intensifying the didactic process; • encouraging the collaboration between students and academic staff and the external environment; • teaching students how to successfully learn and self-improve; • teaching students how to assume the responsibility for their own professional career; • educational flexibility with a special stress on professional specialization; • the quality of education and the focus on critical and creative educational strategies. 12 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY As far as the didactic sphere is concerned, WSB follows the process of change by adjusting its curriculum so that it contains modules indirectly concerned with European and social issues. In addition, students, irrespective of which course they choose, are obligated to take some of the so-called “European modules”. Thus, one can argue, WSB graduates will be sufficiently knowledgeable about different European issues. To emphasize the most important point, the educational process at the University of Security is compatible with the most recent tendencies and developments and conforms with the Bologna Process requirements. 13 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF SECURITY As for the academic dimension, WSB organizes conferences and seminars, assures that its programs adhere to the highest European standards, conducts research and publishes papers as well as forms scientific circles for the purpose of satisfying and expanding students’ interests.
