What an incredible turnout
at the annual banquet on Sunday evening (Jan 30)! Every year
I am more impressed with the
support from the business community in and around Wayne.
A special congratulations to all
of the worthy award recipients.
This time of the year puts much
emphasis on the affairs of our
governments (federal, state and
local). The Government Affairs
Committee has been busy planning functions that will hopefully help Wayne stay connected
with our political (and administrative) leaders and make them
remember our wants and needs
when they make decisions. If
you have any interest in attending any of the following events,
please let the WAED office
know as soon as you can.
On Thursday (Feb 3) a host of
individuals from Wayne will be
going to Lincoln. The Leadership Wayne class along with the
Mayor’s Youth Council will be
touring the State Capitol, listening to floor debate, meeting
with Senator Bloomfield (and
other Senators from other leadership classes in the state) and
Governor Heineman, listening
to testimony on proposed bills,
and end with a tour of the Governor’s Mansion. This experience will hopefully give this
group a better understanding of
how the Nebraska State Legislature works.
Also on Thursday (Feb 3)
representatives from Wayne
will be attending the Nebraska
State Chamber of Commerce
and Industry annual meeting
and banquet. This is great
opportunity to listen to State
Senators as well as get one-onone time to tell them about
our wants and needs in
Wayne. Participants typically
leave at 11 am and return to
Wayne before midnight.
On March 23 Wayne will be
participating with four other
Northeast Nebraska Chambers
of Commerce (West Point,
Fremont, Columbus and Norfolk) in a Legislative Day in
Lincoln. In the past we have
chartered a bus with West
Point and Fremont. We have
left at 1 pm from Wayne and
return around 10 pm that
evening. This is a more intimate gathering where you can
have discussions with many
different senators (not just
ones from Northeast Nebraska). All senators are invited and we typically get about
half of them to attend.
Finally on April 15, Wayne
Area Economic Development
and Wayne State College will
be hosting the 20th Annual
Northeast Nebraska Legislative
Forum at Wayne State College
www.wayneworks.org
(Gardner Auditorium). This is a
great chance to hear from area
senators in our own backyard.
There are currently 3 senators
confirmed (Bloomfield, Flood
and Larson) and 2 others invited (Brasch and Janssen) to
attend. Chamber Coffee will be
held at 10 am in the Gardner
Business building prior to the
forum. The forum will run from
10:30 am to 12 noon.
There are ample chances for you
to get involved with what
Wayne Area Economic Development is doing with Government
Affairs. Just let us know how
you would like to participate. If
you cannot attend these events
or Government Affairs Committee meetings and have governmental issues you would like
addressed, don’t hesitate to
contact the WAED office. To
learn more about the Nebraska
Legislature go to its homepage
at nebraskalegislature.gov. You
can contact District 17 Senator
Dave Bloomfield’s office at 402471-2716, send him an email
[email protected], or mail
correspondence to Senator
Dave Bloomfield, District 17,
Room #1117, PO Box 94604,
Lincoln, NE 68509.
So until next month, stay warm,
drive safely and keep promoting
our great community!

and the impact to our region.
If you have visited an interesting ag business or have something you would like to see,
share that with the Ag Task
Force for their consideration.
Upon review of the third annual Ag Appreciation Seminar,
the committee deemed it a
success and are making plans
to repeat the event in 2011.
The Ag Task Force is researching options for an agricuture tour to be scheduled
sometime in the summer.
Last year the group visited the
West Point Butter Plant, and
West Point Implement and
Design. The tours are open
to the public and are offered
as an opportunity to learn
more about area agriculture

Up and Down Main Street
A few days ago I was driving in what
appeared to be a snow storm while
listening to a Wildcat basketball
game. That was interesting enough
but two advertisements from the
Diamond King really caught my
attention. One ad was about setting
goals and the other was about taking
inventory. I thought they were very
timely not only for his ultimate consumers, but for all business people. As you have begun the new
year, did you make the effort to plan
the year by setting goals or targets
and then did you take inventory to
determine what strategies and concerns you will have to address to help
you meet your goals? When I was
teaching college management classes
one of my favorite quotes was "if you
fail to plan, you plan to fail." I am a
firm believer in planning and just as
"the king" stated in his advertisement
on setting goals, I advised my students to write out their goals. It
helps crystallize your thinking and
gives you something you can turn to
when you want to review your progress and take inventory.
All too often as small business owners we do not take the time to plan
and project for the next year, let
alone the next season. Many of us
are owners/managers and our plates
are full taking care of the daily tasks
and routines and catering to our
clientele. Are we spinning our
wheels, maybe we are!!! But we must
do better and work on time management. Squeeze in time to plan and
strategize even if it is only for the
next season. Good record keeping is
important and fortunately most of
our businesses are computerized to
an extent that last year's figures are
readily available. Based on last year's
sales figures and our own projections
for increases we can determine the
amount of money we need to spend
on new merchandise for sale. If you
need help it is available through the
Nebraska Business Development
Center on campus. There are also
several SCORE teams in this area
tmade up of retired business people
with a variety of business skills from
financial, marketing, human resources and tax planning. Don't let
another year pass without reaching
out for help to improve your skills
in managing and conducting your
business.
The Majestic Theatre is up and
running and doing well showing
first run movies. There is a volunteer section on their web page if
you or your group are interested in
volunteering your services. Groups
using this as a fund raiser earn 10%
of the concession income. The
Wayne Community Theatre will
present "Uncommon Love Stories"
in February and they are excited
about this opportunity. What a
great addition to our downtown.
Matt Ley shared a window signage
proposal with the Revitalize
Wayne/Main Street Committee at
our last meeting and we learned
that Costa Brava, a Mexican seafood restaurant, should be opening
by Valentine's Day in the Rileys
building. Snakey Jakes has changed
their name to Mama Maries, and
Nana’s This & That has picked up
some of the embroidery and yarn
products that used to be sold at
dianne's. Other happenings in
downtown have the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department
moving around the corner to the
former telephone building. And for
those who might be interested, the
National Main Street Conference
will be held in nearby Des Moines
from May 21 to May 25. More info
on this is available from Irene at
the WAED office.

The Revitalize Wayne committee
has been attempting to put some
things together to identify the
contributing buildings in our
Commercial Historic District with
plaques making Wayne a historical destination. I have met with
several people who are passionate
about the history of Wayne and
they have some fabulous ideas.
Along with these ideas they have
expressed some concerns to me.
To a person they feel that Wayne
is a "hotbed of history" that would
be interesting to a variety of people who travel to visit historical
sites and communities and that
would be beneficial to our economic climate. We are looking for
people interested in the history of
Wayne to step forward to help us
develop tours of various buildings
in the Wayne Commercial Historic District. This would include
learning the history of Wayne and
accurately portraying that history.
It has been suggested that our tour
guides be dressed in period clothing. I really got a bang in the year
of the Q-125 Celebration when
Lois Shelton and Irene Fletcher
often came to Q-125 activities
dressed in period outfits they
sewed themselves. If you are interested in this idea and want to
participate please contact me or
Irene at the WAED office.
