president and immediate past president letter
Each year in the pages of the annual report, we recognize and celebrate those who have
taken up the charge to preserve and tell the stories of two remarkable places of national
significance: Jamestown and Yorktown. The museums of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation
continue to be recognized as leading centers of education and tourism thanks to an expansive
and very successful public-private partnership. It is through this partnership that we are able
to deliver engaging educational programs that ignite the imagination, engage the mind,
and inspire a love of American history.
In the years since the Foundation embarked on transforming the Yorktown Victory Center
into the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, an extraordinary level of support allowed
us to expand our vision for this new museum and launch the American Revolution Museum
at Yorktown Campaign for Support on May 12, 2015, with a goal of $15 million.
In this special edition of the annual report, we celebrate not only the milestones of the
American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, but also the philanthropy that enables us to
create, sustain, and preserve this museum alongside Jamestown Settlement. The generosity
of every donor makes a difference, and we are grateful to each of you for your commitment
to preserving our American history and to leaving a legacy to future generations.
Among those who have helped us reach our current $10.6 million mark are corporate
citizens, including Dominion Resources whose commitments to this new museum total
$900,000 – the largest private investment to date in the Campaign for Support; members of
the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, who have personally invested a collective $2.3
million in the new museum; numerous foundations, including The Gladys and Franklin Clark
Foundation whose early gift allowed us to acquire the rare early broadside printing of the
Declaration of Independence; York County whose support of $1 million over the next decade
will support short- and long-term exhibit fabrication and programming; and each of you,
citizens of the United States, who know how important it is to preserve our past and educate
current and future generations of Americans.
Your philanthropy ensures that we can create this living history of the American
Revolution. We cannot thank you enough.
With $4.4 million yet to raise, the Campaign for Support offers opportunities for every
citizen of our nation to join the ranks and preserve the story of liberty and freedom for
future generations.
Sincerely,
Clifford B. Fleet

creating a living history of the american revolution
American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support
As the Yorktown Victory Center reached a midpoint milestone in its
transformation into the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown with the
opening of an 80,000-square-foot museum building, the Jamestown-Yorktown
Foundation, Inc., was reaching a milestone in private support raised for the new
museum’s gallery exhibits, outdoor exhibits, and educational resources.
By June 30, 2015, the American Revolution Museum
at Yorktown Campaign for Support had raised $10.6
million in support of the American Revolution
Museum at Yorktown’s gallery exhibits, outdoor
exhibits, and educational resources, as well as for
the Foundation, Inc., Annual Fund.
Led by co-chairs Mari Ann and Charles Banks of
Gloucester, Virginia, and with 71% of the Campaign’s
$15 million goal raised, the Campaign for Support is
poised for success.
Campaign Highlights
Numerous significant gifts bolstered the American
Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support
over the past two fiscal years.
Altria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris,
donated $200,000 to support the development of
the inaugural special exhibition at the American
Revolution Museum at Yorktown. The exhibition
is expected to open in summer 2017. Two grants
totaling $250,000 from The Garland & Agnes Taylor
Gray Foundation, a supporting organization of The
Community Foundation Serving Richmond & Central
Virginia, are supporting exhibition galleries, outdoor
living-history areas and education programs
of the new museum.
2 | historyisfun.org
The Herndon Foundation of Richmond awarded a
grant of $100,000, and The Beazley Foundation, Inc.,
of Portsmouth awarded its second grant of $50,000;
both grants support gallery exhibits. The Camp
Family Foundations of Franklin made gifts totaling
$91,000 to support gallery exhibits and educational
resources. The Robins Foundation of Richmond gave
two gifts totaling $50,000 for collection enhancement
efforts, including acquisition of artifacts to illustrate
key themes in the permanent galleries. The Richard
S. Reynolds Foundation of Richmond awarded a
grant of $150,000 to support the acquisition of the rare
1730s portrait of Ayuba Suleiman Diallo. Plains All
American Pipeline, L.P., headquartered in Texas and
with a local presence as the owner of the Yorktown
refinery, is supporting the new museum with a gift
of $150,000. Ferguson Enterprises, Inc., made a major
commitment to support the new museum’s most
pressing needs and the Annual Fund.
We are grateful to each of these and to the numerous
other corporations, individuals, and foundations who
have stepped forward and joined in the American
Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support.
For a complete listing of Campaign donors of $25,000
or more, see page 5.
Campaign Priorities
The new museum will invite visitors to relive the
Revolution – through sensory experiences of its
sights, sounds, and smells and the feelings it evoked,
integrating artifacts, exhibits, technology, education,
and outdoor living-history areas into a full array of
opportunities for participation and learning.
With $4.4 million left to raise, the Campaign for
Support offers numerous opportunities for meaningful
investment to create, sustain, and preserve the story
of the American Revolution.
gallery exhibits: The intergenerational nature
of today’s museum audience demands that the new
museum’s galleries are strategically designed to
include artifacts, short films, interactive stations, and
immersive environments. As design and construction
of the galleries move forward, the JamestownYorktown Foundation continues to develop critical
elements – acquiring artifacts that illustrate complex
concepts and developing exhibits and technologies
that meet the needs of a changing audience and
reflect best practices in the museum field.
outdoor exhibits: Nothing replaces a direct,
physical experience of place. Written words on a page
cannot convey the same emotional experience of
feeling the ground shake with the burst of cannon fire,
smelling smoke in a Continental Army encampment,
or touching the leaves of a harvested tobacco plant on
a Revolution-era farm. The Foundation is expanding
and reconfiguring the two outdoor living-history
areas. The existing encampment and farm will be
relocated and transformed to support the gallery
storyline, incorporate recent historical research,
and expand capacity for students and other visitors
to watch and take part in demonstrations.
educational resources: At the heart of this new
museum is a focus on the Foundation’s mission and
a call to educate our nation’s citizens, adults and
children alike, about America’s early history. The
centerpiece of this effort continues to be our awardwinning educational programming for Virginia
students. As we draw near to the opening of the
American Revolution Museum at Yorktown in late
2016, we are introducing enhanced educational
programs that include on-site field trips for students,
public programs and lectures for adult learners,
outreach programs in classrooms across Virginia,
web-based curriculum materials, and distance
learning opportunities.
Whether you have already made your gift or are
contemplating your first gift, you play an important

forging partnerships
Jamestown Settlement Special Exhibitions
Special exhibitions are a key part of the visitor
experience at Jamestown Settlement, offering
opportunities to explore topics in depth. These
exhibitions also offer opportunities for the JamestownYorktown Foundation to forge partnerships with
other institutions.
The Foundation collaborated with The Mariners’
Museum in Newport News, Virginia, to present
“Working and Racing on the Bay: The Chesapeake
Log Canoe.” The exhibition opened in September 2014,
and in spring 2015 was expanded with the addition
of eight black-and-white portraits of individuals who
make their living from farming and harvesting oysters
on the Chesapeake Bay today. “Working and Racing
on the Bay,” which concluded on September 8, 2015,
was made possible by grants and gifts from James City
County, Altria Group, Dominion Resources, and E.
Peter and Caddy R. Meekins.
From December 5, 2015 to February 28, 2016,
an exhibit titled “Clayton & Catesby: Botanical
Virginia,” will tell the story of early and recent efforts
to catalogue Virginia’s unique flora. The exhibit,
presented thanks to partnerships with the Flora of
Virginia Project and the Garden Club of Virginia, will
feature seventeen 18th-century prints of Catesby’s
original drawings of plants and birds, as well as a
second-edition copy of Flora Virginica from 1762.
Opening June 4, 2016, “Bartering for a Continent: How
Anglo-Indian Trade Shaped America,” will explore
the importance of trade between American Indians
Virginia Indians methodically fashioned canoes from
single trees. Theodor de Bry colored engraving (circa
1590) after John White painting. From the collections at
The Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Va.
and English colonists from the founding of Jamestown
through the American Revolution. The exhibition will
engage visitors in the story of Virginia’s influence on
a new world of exchange of goods and commodities
in North America and how trading of goods and ideas
between European and Native peoples has helped
mold our nation. Early planning for this exhibit is
made possible by a grant from James City County.
Special exhibitions offer significant opportunities for
sponsorship. To learn more, call the Development office

maritime education program,
outreach education, and historical
interpretation, as well as artifact
acquisition efforts for Jamestown
Settlement and the American
Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
Yorktown Victory Center, and
the future American Revolution

Planned gifts are an important
way to grow our endowments,

jamestown-yorktown foundation, inc., annual fund
We regard every donor as a member of our museum family; together we have built a strong foundation
for programs that further our educational mission. Space limits our ability to list all donors to the
Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., but each gift is gratefully received.
The following lists recognize donors who made contributions during Fiscal Year 2014 and Fiscal Year 2015.
Donors who made contributions in both years are listed in the higher donor club of that two-year period from
July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2015.
The 1607 Society
Members of The 1607 Society are leaders in private support of our museums and as such can take pride in the
programs they support. Members also enjoy exclusive social and cultural events throughout the year. For more
information, contact Christina Dominguez, Director of the Annual Fund, at (757) 253-4257.

Party on the Pier
June 20, 2014
On June 20, 2014, guests
came out to Jamestown
Settlement to enjoy the
music of Slapnation and
dinner by Beach Bully BBQ
of Virginia Beach, all against
the backdrop of the re-created
1607 ships Susan Constant,
Godspeed, and Discovery.
Our ships were constant
reminders during the night
of what Party on the Pier
was benefitting: the museum
and the education programs
that we provide every day.
Thanks to the leadership of
our special events task force
and the generosity of our
sponsors, including flagship
sponsor Chesapeake Bank &
Chesapeake Investment Group,
Party on the Pier raised nearly
$4,000 for the museums and
educational programs.

Victory Celebration at White Hall Plantation,
hosted by Mari Ann and Charlie Banks
October 19, 2013
The mood was patriotic as guests arrived at White
Hall Plantation in Gloucester, Va., for the “Victory
Celebration” to benefit the future American
Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Decked out in
red, white, and blue, guests toasted the Republic
with General George Washington, experienced the
surrender at Yorktown as recounted by General
Washington and his good friend the Marquis de
Lafayette, and recalled the early days of the
United States with founding father Thomas
Jefferson. Cannon firings by historical interpreters
of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation saluted
the momentous American and French victory
on October 19, 1781.
We are so very grateful to Mari Ann and Charlie
who opened their beautiful home for this benefit,
to the sponsors who graciously underwrote the
celebration, and to each of our guests who joined
us to raise $22,000 for the American Revolution
Museum at Yorktown.

Wine, Dine & Jazz on the James
June 19, 2015
Wine, Dine & Jazz on the James brought more than
400 guests to Jamestown Settlement to enjoy a night
of fundraising, music, and fun on June 19. Based on
the popular Party on the Pier, this new event featured
tastings of 10 wines and 10 Virginia craft beers, local
artisan food vendors, and the smooth music of Forte
Jazz Band against the backdrop of a sunset vista from
Jamestown Settlement’s ships’ pier. Wine, Dine & Jazz
on the James raised more than $7,000 for the JamestownYorktown Foundation, Inc., Annual Fund.
Special thanks go to presenting sponsor, Chesapeake
Bank and Chesapeake Investment Group.
