YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
November 30, 2014-February 2, 2016
The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the
Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers
Online Article: usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-ofmass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/the-real-presence-of-jesus-christ-inthe-sacrament-of-the-eucharist-basic-questions-and-answers.cfm
By his Real Presence in the Eucharist, Christ fulfils his promise to be
with us “always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). As St. Thomas
Aquinas wrote, “It is the law of friendship that friends should live
together. Christ has not left us without his bodily presence in this our
pilgrimage, but he joins us to himself in this sacrament in the reality
of his body and blood” (Summa Theologiae, III q. 75, a. 1). With this gift
of Christ’s presence in our midst, the Church is truly blessed. As Jesus
told His disciples, referring to His presence among them, “Amen, I
say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what
you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not
hear it” (Mt 13:17). In the Eucharist, the Church both receives the gift
of Jesus Christ and gives grateful thanks to God for such a blessing.
This thanksgiving is the only proper response, for through this gift of
himself in the celebration of the Eucharist under the appearances of
bread and wine Christ gives us the gift of eternal life.
“Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of
Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever
eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise
him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true
drink. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the
Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.”
(Jn 6:53-57)
With further parishioner input, thought, and discussion in the
Worship Commission, the following minor changes to how we start
Mass seems helpful.
• When the bell rings five minutes before, a lector will read a prayer
composed to help one prepare for Mass. We will start with one by
St. Thomas Aquinas. Those present are asked to meditate on these
words during a period of silence.
• When the bell for Mass rings, the deacon or priest from the back
will invite all to stand and greet those around them with words of
welcome.
• When everyone seems ready, a song leader or choir leader will
announce the opening hymn and invite all to join in the singing.
• The opening hymn is sung during the procession, and Mass
proceeds in the manner prescribed by the Roman Missal
Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas:
Almighty eternal God, behold I come to the Sacrament of Your Only
Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
as one sick to the physician of life,
as one unclean to the fountain of mercy,
as one blind to the light of everlasting brightness,
as one poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth.
I ask, therefore, for the abundance of your immense generosity,
that You may graciously cure my sickness,
wash my defilement,
give light to my blindness,
enrich my poverty,
clothe my nakedness,
so that I may receive the bread of Angels,
the King of kings and Lord of lords,
with such reverence and humility,
such contrition and devotion,
such purity and faith, such purpose and intention
as are conducive to the salvation of my soul.
Grant, I pray, that I may receive
not only the Sacrament of our Lord’s Body and Blood,
but also the reality and power of that Sacrament.
O most gentle God,
grant that I may so receive
the Body of Your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
which he took from the Virgin Mary,
that I may be made worthy to merit being incorporated into his
Mystical Body and to be counted amongst its members.
O most loving Father,
grant that I may at my last gaze forever
upon unveiled face of Your beloved Son
whom I, a wayfarer,
propose to receive now veiled under these species:
Who lives and reigns with You for ever and ever.
Amen.

NINE MONTHS WITH CHRIST IN THE WOMB
Week 27: The folds and grooves in Jesus’ brain are expanding
and getting more complex at this stage. He also boasts of a
healthy head of hair as well. Jesus of the womb, Hear our
prayers! Please pray this prayer every day between March
25th and December 25th, 2015:
Dear Jesus of the Womb,
Most fragile child of Mary’s protection, we look to You as the youngest
image of perfect innocence. We lift up our prayers to You who will save each
of our souls. Just as You entered humanity through this most gentle and
helpless state, now help us to find Your presence in the faces of all the gentle
and helpless persons of the earth. Bless us with eyes that see You and ears
that hear You: in the presence of the poor and the outcast, the hungry and the
homeless, the condemned and the war-torn, the elderly and the unborn. May
we discover You every day as at Christmas and offer You our gifts every day
as at Epiphany. This we ask of You and the Father, with Your Holy Spirit,
and in union with Mary Your tender home, Amen.

THE NEW TESTAMENT
St. Columbkille,
Patron Saint
of Faith Formation
Pope Francis has exhorted his people to “Spread the Good News; make available to all people a copy of
the Gospels.” Know someone who might benefit by having a copy of the Good News? Our resource library
has available a paperback New Testament Bible, Ignatius Press, for only $5.00 a copy. Give a copy of the
New Testament to family and friends in honor of Pope Francis’ visit to the States! A few copies are in the
vestibule by the bookrack, or visit the library and pick one up; you may also call the office to reserve one
or more.
“SYMBOLON” IS NOW “FORMED”
The Adult and Family web site for educational material on the Catholic Faith – SYMBOLON – is now titled FORMED. It is the SAME
great 24/7 digital access to information and inspiration about the Catholic Faith, BUT now with added programs, movies to stream, audio
CD’s to download, e-books, study guides, and more. It is the definitive go-to for all things Catholic for adults, youth and teens, providing
invaluable resources for our parish to grow both spiritually and intellectually. Those who are already registered on SYMBOLON should
have received an email concerning re-registering to FORMED.org. Look for upcoming program announcements from our Education
Commission concerning on-site education opportunities for adults and young adults. Start today! We trust that FORMED.org will be an
invaluable resource for you and your family to bring adults, young adults, and teens into a deeper communion with Jesus Christ and his
Church. We look forward to helping you navigate this new tool as we form disciples to go out and transform the world for Christ! For
details or assistance with the online registration, please call Dave Copsey (937-728-0717) or Jennifer Gress (937-725-8488).
INTRODUCING A NEW SERIES from the FORMED web site: LECTIO ~ Peter, the Cornerstone of Catholicism. So who really was
Peter? Was he a poor fisherman? An impetuous student? A bungling disciple? A coward who became the "rock" of the church? It is not too
late to find out the answers! Join in on the ten week discussion series held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in classroom 11 (PC basement).
Please call Dave Copsey (937-728-0717) or Jennifer Gress (937-725-8488).

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEK
September 28 – St. Wencelaus, Martyr
As duke, St. Wencelaus was a father to his subjects, generous toward orphans, widows, and the poor. On his own shoulders he frequently
carried wood to the houses of the needy. He often attended the funerals of the poor, ransomed captives, and visited those suffering in prison.
He was filled with a deep reverence toward the clergy; with his own hands he sowed the wheat for making altar breads and pressed the
grapes for the wine used in the Mass. During winter he would visit the churches barefoot through snow and ice, frequently leaving behind
bloody footprints. Wenceslaus was eighteen years old when he succeeded his father to the throne. Without regard for the opposition, he
worked in close cooperation with the Church to convert his pagan country. His brother Boleslaus, however, turned to paganism. One day he
invited Wenceslaus to his house for a banquet. The next morning, on September 28, 929, as Wenceslaus was on the way to Mass, Boleslaus
struck him down at the door of the church.
September 28 – St. Lawrence Ruiz & Companions, Martyrs
They shed their blood for Christ in Nagasaki, Japan. These martyrs were members of the Order of St. Dominic. They were nine priests, two
religious, two sisters, and three laymen. Among the latter was Lawrence Ruiz, a family man from the Philippines. They abundantly sowed
the missionary seed of Christianity with the example of their life and death.
September 29 – Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
St. Michael is a guardian and protector of the Church from its roots in Israel to the Church of today and beyond. In the Bible,
Michael appears in Daniel’s vision as “the great prince” who defends Israel against its enemies; in the Book of Revelation, he leads
God’s armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the
fourth century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels in the fifth century. In Hebrew,
his name means “who is like God.”
St. Gabriel, whose name means “hero of God,” announces that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. His best-known
appearance is an encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary, who consents to bear the Messiah.
St. Raphael's name is Hebrew for “God has healed.” Raphael’s activity is confined to the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he appears to
guide Tobit’s son Tobiah through a series of fantastic adventures which lead to a threefold happy ending: Tobiah’s marriage to Sarah, the
healing of Tobit’s blindness and the restoration of the family fortune.
September 30 – St. Jerome, Priest & Doctor of the Church (345-420)
St. Jerome is the patron saint of librarians and scholars. With a great love of learning and books, as a monk and priest, he developed a
passion for the interpretation of the Sacred Scripture. With a comprehensive knowledge of classical languages, St. Jerome produced a Latin
text of the entire Bible, eventually known as the Vulgate. He wrote numerous commentaries on several books of the Bible, including a highly
reputable work on the Gospel according to Matthew. Along with writing, he provided spiritual guidance to wealthy widows and mentored
young monks in monastic discipline. St. Jerome joins three other saints – Ambrose, Augustine, and Gregory the Great – as the first Doctors
of the Church.
October 1 – St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church (1873-1897)
Saint Thérèse was born at Alençon in France on 2nd January 1873. Her parents were Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin. After the
death of her mother on August 28, 1877, Thérèse and her family moved to Lisieux. She wished to embrace the contemplative life,
as her sisters Pauline and Marie had done in the Carmel of Lisieux, but was prevented from doing so by her young age. On a visit
to Italy, during an audience granted by Pope Leo XIII to the pilgrims from Lisieux on November 20, 1887, she asked the Holy
Father with childlike audacity to be able to enter the Carmel at the age of fifteen. On April 9, 1888, she entered the Carmel of
Lisieux. She fulfilled in a very special way all the little aspects of daily life, with humility, a gospel simplicity and great trust in God, and
she tried by her example and her words to impart these virtues to her sisters, especially the novices. Discovering that her place was to be at
the heart of the Church, she offered her life for the salvation of souls and for the well-being of the Church.
October 2 – The Holy Guardian Angels
Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers. Yet guardian
angels are not only for children. Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer and to
present their souls to God at death. The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic
doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: “See that you do
not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” Devotion
to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. St. Benedict gave it impetus and Bernard of Clairvaux, the great
12th-century reformer, was such an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic devotion assumed its current form in his day.
A feast in honor of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar.

WHAT IS OUR PARISH COUNCIL?
Representing the various segments of parish life, this group advises
the pastor on the pastoral needs of the parish. The Council makes
recommendations to the pastor that are in line with Catholic Church
teaching and directives. Representatives are recommended by the
adult congregation and are chosen by lottery in April of each year.
Parish Pastoral Council meets on the first Monday of October,
December, February, April and June.
