CIS Newsletter June 18, 2013 Volume 5, Issue 35 Calcutta International School Amra Sabai Raja Rabindra Jayanti Celebration Primary Section CIS celebrated Rabindra Jayanti on May 9 in the Music room. Dr. Banerjee spoke to the students. Teachers sang Rabindra sangeet. Parents took part in a few songs as well. The children were shown a documentary on Rabindranath Tagore directed by Satyajit Ray. Pool Par ty To beat the heat, the Pre Nursery kids enjoyed a pool party at the Tot Lot. Ele gantly Elocute Vernacular Elocution Competition was held in the Music Room on 30th April, 2013. Upper Nursery, batch of 2012-2013 was geared up for their Graduation Ceremony in the Music Room on 10 th May. They received a Graduation hat and a Certificate from the Senior and Junior School Principal. “ A sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, a sheltering angel. So nothing can harm you. ~ Irish Blessing“ 1 CIS Newsletter June 18, 2013 Volume 5, Issue 35 Calcutta International School Workshop Wealth 04 May 2013: Professor Gilman W Whiting from Vanderbilt University conducted a workshop for teachers of Calcutta International School in the Audio-Visual Room. The workshop was on ‘Understanding by Design’ - UDB which was based on Backward Planning. It was Activity oriented teaching with a goal of understanding as opposed to tests. Hold My Hand 30 April 2013: The Graduation ceremony of the outgoing A Level students was organized by the AS Level students with support from the school management. For the first time, there was a formal ceremony to mark the occasion. Ankhi Maulik and Abhijoy Mitra spoke as Valedictorians. Pooja Tripathy, Auyon Chakrabarti and Ritiwk Roychowdhury were the chosen Salutatorians. Kritika Wadhwa and Pradyumna Chaudhuri were awarded for Best Initiative. Ritwika Ghosh and Siwoo Lee were awarded for Best Conduct. The outgoing students made a presentation showcasing their memories with the school, while AS students showed a recording of the teachers sharing their feelings about the outgoing batch. A cultural performance was stringed together by the AS students to mark the event which ended with a dinner. Good bye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end, but in my heart is the memory and there you will always be. - Walt Disney Design, Concept & Layout: Mrs. Angshumitra Chakrabarti 2 CIS Newsletter June 18, 2013 Volume 5, Issue 35 Calcutta International School Happenings 22 April 2013: Representatives from three reputed US universities – Princeton, Duke and Northwestern – visited Calcutta International School and interacted with students of A Levels. Admission requirements, entry modalities, financial support, courses offered, accommodation and other related issues were discussed. 03 May 2013: Representatives from Columbia University spoke to students of A Levels discussing the possibilities of our students joining the University for Further Studies. Empower Ear th The Earth Club had a special assembly, which was on the importance of butterflies in the environment. Planting was encouraged to attract butterflies in the CIS garden. Dr. Banerjee gave and interesting introduction and the children watched the film ‘Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams.’ Classes 1-5 watched ‘The Peach Orchard.’ This was followed by an activity and an interactive session with the director. Tournament Tales On April 4 an Intra school Basketball tournament took place. Green team emerged as the winners and the red team was the 1st runners up. Sub Junior Golf Tournament: Kaushal Bagrodia won the runners up trophy in this tournament sponsored by Tata Steel and held at Patna. KMC School On April 24, CIS teachers Ms. Ganguli and Mrs. Ghosh taught the pre primary and class 4 children at the Corporation school. Ms. Ganguli showed slides of birds and animals and explained why they were endangered species. Mrs. Ghosh showed a video clip and explained the story of Goldilocks, which the children enjoyed. On April 5 Mrs Antara Banerjee and Mrs Sangeeta Chatterjee went to the KMC school in Patuli to teach Class 4 and Class 3 students. Children of Class 4, learnt how to read time and they prepared clocks along with Mrs. Banerjee. Mrs. Sangeeta Chatterjee’s students enjoyed multiplication along with fun activities. Editing: Mrs. K. Ali & the Web 3 CIS Newsletter June 18, 2013 Volume 5, Issue 35 Calcutta International School Cheers CIS A feather in the cap: CIS once again wins the International School Award for the years 2013-2016! Thanks to the ISA coordinator Mrs. S. Ray and the ISA team comprising of Ms. L. Khanna, Ms. Nundee, Mrs. S. Boral, and Mr. S. Ghosh. Collaborated projects were done with partner schools in Germany, Qatar and Sweden. CIS thanks British Council teachers and students for their guidance and support. Annual Music Competition for the Middle School 2013 [ 7 – 10] The Annual Music Competition for the Middle School (Classes 5 to 8) was held in the Music Room on 14.5.2013 and 15.5.2013. On the first day, there were three events-Piano/Keyboard, Guitar and Indian Vocal, while on the second day, there was one event-Western Vocal. There were two groups. Classes 5 & 6 and Classes 7 & 8. The instrumental pieces ranged from western classical composers to Indian songs and Rabindra Sangeet. As for the vocals, some students sang without accompaniment, some played the keyboard or guitar on their own or sang with music tracks. The enthusiastic participation of the children made the event successful.
