MATCH REPORTS Men’s Metro 3 Gold OGMHC 6 def Kalamunda 0 Goal Scorers: Jamie 2; Dougie 2; AJ 1; Ako 1 Avid readers of last year's match reports will no doubt be waiting for more waxing of the lyrical and analogies to battles near and far. With your regular correspondent still hiding under an offseason rock, the wait continues. However, your golden Metro 3s have otherwise picked up this season where the last finished. In this third week of the premiership defence, the mighty 3s were met by a Kalamunda team intent on, well, turning up. It was 3-0 at half time, with the golden 3s having all of the play. By the time full time was blown, the score was 6-0 (and more chances gone begging than the West Coast Eagles) as the forwards made it look easy. The odd Kalamunda sortie was repelled by a solid defence, to the point where Bob (Alex), had to go chasing the ball in order to feel part of the game. Next week sees your 3s meet what is likely to be stiffer competition in the form of an also undefeated and ladder leading Newman Knights. Stay tuned. OGMHC are very fortunate to have Jeremy Edwards from Tasmania playing in our MTL side. Jeremy has moved to Perth for his hockey career and will be playing in his debut Kookaburra match against Korea this weekend. Tasting Notes 2011 ‘Margaret’ 2011 ranks with 2007 as one of the warmest and earliest Margaret River harvests, producing very polished and luscious wines. While many lamented the wet cold conditions in the east of Australia, Margaret River basked in warmth and sunshine! Woodlands ‘Margaret’ is sourced entirely from the Woodlands Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon portion comes from a slope on the south of Woodlands that wraps around a 90-degree radius from east to north. The fruit on this slope receives a great deal of direct sunlight from morning to mid-afternoon, leading to rich full-bodied wines. The Merlot and Malbec plots that make up the remainder of ‘Margaret’ come from our west-facing slope of deep loam soil. This slope receives the most direct afternoon sunlight at Woodlands, and produces more exotic fruit characters in the finished wine. 2011 saw the introduction of a sorting table into our winery. As in the case of the leading Chateaux of Bordeaux, this sorting table has been placed between our redesigned destemmer and the crusher, enabling us to sort through the crush berry by berry. th This wine was picked over 2 weeks beginning on the 19 of March. Following harvest, the fruit was destemmed, hand sorted, crushed and fermented in small stainless steel fermenters. Following fermentation, the Cabernet Sauvignon portions remained on skins for 30 days for added complexity and tannin integration. Once fermentation was complete this wine was transferred into French oak where it remained for 18 months. 44 percent of the barrels used to mature this wine were new. Our 2011 ‘Margaret’ is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 14% Malbec. The colour is intense deep red with crimson hues. The nose shows layers of toasty French oak, blackcurrant, mulberry and Satsuma plum. The palate is mouth filling, dense and layered, with the flavours mirroring the nose. The wine finishes with polished ripe tannins and great length. Bottled in Stelvin, our 2011 ‘Margaret’ will be best enjoyed from 2016 to 2030. 2011 “Cabernet Merlot” Our Cabernet Merlot is primarily produced from the Woodlands Brook Vineyard, located two kilometres from Woodlands in the heart of the Wilyabrup Valley. The vineyard faces gently to the north, and the soil is composed of quartz and loam over clay. Often our Cabernet Merlot is a wine that is not so much “pretty”, but powerful. In the occasional year such as 2007 or 2010 it can look like an ugly duckling, often tannic and closed. We believe that one must trust the quality of the vineyards natural tannins will soften as the wine ages. Over the first three years in bottle the Cabernet Merlot’s tannins soften, and the fruit begins to sing. Our 2011 Cabernet Merlot has more perfume than recent vintages, leading one to speculate that it is a wine for early drinking. However, underneath it still carries a core of powerful fruit. This is a wine to leave under the staircase. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot that has been matured in French oak for 14 months. The colour is a deep crimson. The nose is deep and brooding, showing red berry fruits, juniper, tobacco, and fine French oak notes. The palate shows a complex ripe array of fruits, finishing dense and powerful. Still young and unevolved, we consider our 2011 to be a future classic like the 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 vintages. This wine will be best enjoyed from 2017 to 2020. 2011 “Shiraz” 2011 was an excellent vintage for both red and white wines in Margaret River, with hot dry weather and very little rainfall. This wine was destemmed, but not crushed, before being ‘cold soaked’ on skins for five days prior to fermentation. Following fermentation this wine was matured in large oak vats to preserve the fine fruit characters as well as adding savory and spicy characters from time on lees. The nose shows blackberry and raspberry flavours combined with white spice and toasty oak notes. The palate is generously constructed, rich and full flavored – finishing with good depth and fine balanced tannins. This wine will be best enjoyed over the next 5 years. 2011 “Chloe” Vintage 2011 was characterized by a hot, dry summer with very little rainfall. These conditions led to our 2011 Chloe being picked two weeks earlier than average. Fortunately Woodlands Chardonnay is produced solely from Mendoza clone vines. This clone tends to produce very small berries with high levels of acidity. In years such as 2004, 2007, and 2011, we have found that despite the warm conditions our Chardonnay still retains its excellent freshness. Our “Chloe” is produced from a two-acre plot located at the north-east corner of the Woodlands Vineyard. The plot lies at the top of a south facing slope, and the soil is comprised of deep loam topsoil over clay. This plot is the most shaded location on our vineyard- protected on the west, north and east with marri and peppermint trees. st The fruit for our 2011 Chloe was hand picked on the 21 of February before being sorted in the vineyard. Once at the winery the fruit passed over our new vibrating sorting table, removing all remaining stems and leaves from the fruit. Once the fruit was pressed and settled for 7 days, the clear juice was transferred into French barrels, of which one third were new. Fermentation proceeded quickly and cleanly. Following fermentation the wine remained in barrel, with the lees stirred once every month. This wine was bottled in January 2012 after 11 months in barrel. The colour of our 2011 Chloe is an intense pale straw. The nose shows toasted cashew, oatmeal and cracked straw combined with white stone fruits. Tightly structured, the palate of this wine shows a nice mixture of powerful stone fruit characters underpinned by great natural acidity. This wine is bottled in Stelvin and will be best enjoyed from 2021 to 2013. 2012 “Chardonnay” 2012 was a classic vintage for Wilyabrup, consisting of perfect ripening conditions rarely too hot nor too cold, and with consistent dry weather up to the end of April. 2012 provided such gradual ripening conditions that we could take more time, employing more picking dates and using smaller batches. In 2012 we fermented the entire Chardonnay vintage in barrel, adding more complexity to the wine. Following fermentation most batches were racked to tank, while 35% of the wine remained in barrel. In September the wine was racked together, filtered and bottled. The colour of our 2012 Chardonnay is a vibrant golden straw. The nose reveals peach, pear, apricot, and toasty French oak. Dense and generous on the palate, this wine carries a sweet middle palate of stone fruits, finishing fine and textured from the natural acidity. This wine has won a gold medal at the 2012 Margaret River Wine Show. This wine will be best enjoyed from 2015 to 2018. 2012 “Sauvignon Blanc Semillon” 2012 was a classic vintage for Margaret River, consisting of perfect ripening conditions up to the end of April. The grapes for this wine were picked and chilled before being gently pressed and blended. The wine was then fermented exclusively in stainless steel tanks to retain intensity and vibrancy that Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon have to offer. Following fermentation the wine remained on lees to enhance complexity. This wine is a blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon. The colour is a bright straw. The nose has lifted aromas of citrous and passion fruit - classic for Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is bright and intense, the flavors mirroring the nose. The wine finishes with fantastic crisp acidity. This wine will be best enjoyed over the next 3 years. Community Sponsors
