What used to be Shannon Aerospace (SAL) – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik – has thus joined Hamburg, Berlin, Budapest, Malta and Sofia as one of the six European base maintenance facilities in name as well as in practice. The change in name coincides with the 25th anniversary of the company which provides services to over 50 airlines and employs a workforce of more than 500. The renaming of the company, which is located at Shannon Airport in western Ireland, is not yet visible everywhere and will be implemented step by step over the coming months. It will not entail any changes for customers in their current contracts, addresses or contact partners. Lufthansa Technik Shannon specializes in the overhaul of short- and mediumrange aircraft. The services offered include basic overhauls (D-checks) and annual checks (C-checks) on the Boeing 737, 757, 767 and the Airbus A320 family of aircraft. // Floor path marking // Lufthansa Technik has received the US patent for its “silicone matrix” in GuideU. GuideU is the progressive development of Guideline®, Lufthansa Technik’s non-electrical and therefore maintenance-free floor path marking system, which shows crew and passengers the way to the aircraft’s emergency exits in an emergency situation. In addition to a wider choice of colors with the same high luminosity, GuideU is lighter than its predecessor and the profile can be supplied with any curvature compared with the formerly straight profile. GuideU is also moisture-resistant and flatter as well as impact- and scratchresistant, which means that it can be used for both textile areas and wet areas. Specific tests were carried out and documented to emphasize and define the innovations more clearly in a bid to convince the US examiners of the inventive achievement. “The silicone matrix was a critical invention for successfully achieving these properties,” says Wolfgang Sutter, Development Engineer and Product Manager for GuideU. The special product properties were therefore finally recognized as new and inventive by the US patent office and the patent granted. // For more information: www.guideu.com São Paulo Component supply for Azul TCS® // Lufthansa Technik and the Brazilian low fare airline Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras have signed a comprehensive component supply contract for the airline’s fleet of seven A330-200 aircraft. The Total Component Support (TCS®) agreement covers maintenance, repair, overhaul and engineering services as well as pooling and home base lease at the airline’s home base in Campinas,Viracopos. “We are extremely pleased to partner with Lufthansa Technik for our A330 component support. Lufthansa Technik convinced us that even a large MRO provider could customize its services to the individual needs of an airline who is building an international high-frequency operation that requires a high level reliability and availability,” said Amir Nasruddin, Director Aircraft Programs & Procurement of Azul. This contract signature is a large success for us in the growing but highly competitive Brazilian market. As a strong partner we will offer an optimal component support to assist Azul.”// Service provider for Moog A350 and 787 // Lufthansa Technik and Moog Inc. announced the signing of a contract making Lufthansa Technik an authorized service provider for Moog’s flight control products on both the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350 aircraft. Moog is the original equipment provider for both primary and high-lift flight control actuation systems on the 787 and the primary flight control actuation and trailing edge actuation system on the A350. Lufthansa Technik’s component division already plays a major role in supporting the 787 for multiple customers and is preparing for the entry into service of the A350 for Lufthansa and other customers. This agreement allows Lufthansa Technik to directly offer its customers MRO services specifically related to Moog’s 787 and A350 products. “We are pleased to be working with Lufthansa Technik on the 787 and A350,” stated Kate Schaefer, Moog’s General Manager of Commercial Aircraft Services. “We are dedicated to providing our customers with unparalleled service and support and this agreement expands the service choices available to the airlines.”// 6 | Lufthansa Technik Lufthansa Technik Connection 2.2015 “Continuously improving processes and efficiency” The reorganization of the sales division into three regions is the latest change in Lufthansa Technik’s corporate history. Wolfgang Weynell, Senior Vice President Corporate Sales & Marketing, explains how the company’s business has changed in the 20 years since its foundation, how it reacted to the market and which strengths made Lufthansa Technik the leading MRO provider in the world. In your view, how has the company developed over the past two decades overall? Wolfgang Weynell: Actually, we have been doing business with customers other than Lufthansa since the 1950s – only that we were still a technical department of Lufthansa back then. However, the foundation of Lufthansa Technik and the start of operations as an independent company within the Lufthansa Group some 20 years ago marked an important step in that it presented a clear message that we were ready and willing to take on the external market. We nearly quadrupled our revenues within that period and we have continuously developed our products to best meet the customer needs within a significantly changing market. Can the company’s development be exemplified by any important figures? In the mid-1990s, the majority of our revenues – around 70 percent – still came from business with airlines in the Lufthansa Group. This has changed significantly. Today, business with external customers accounts for around 70 percent of the entire Lufthansa Technik Group’s revenues – bearing in mind that the MRO market has been growing continuously overall. We now have for example some 3,500 aircraft under component support contracts, with about 1,700 of those being Airbus A320s. And we have grown from a technical division to a global group of more than 30 companies in Asia, the Americas and EUMEA. What are the drivers that enabled continuous growth for Lufthansa Technik over this period? Continuously improving processes, reducing costs and increasing efficiency are ongoing topics for us – and have been from the very beginning. That is why we’re able to play in the first league of the MRO market today. Another thing that has always been important in everything we do is fulfillment. In other words, when we conclude contracts, we meet our commitments and always deliver what we have promised. And of equal importance is customer proximity, we have moved our sales and customer support teams into the regions to be in the same time-zone as our customers and to react on short notice to customer needs. Is there a product that stands out for you in the range of services that have been created or further developed over the past 20 years? Besides the continuous improvements of our core MRO products such as engine and component support and repair we have further developed services which are of direct operational help to our customers. Our Airline Support Teams (AST®) are a good example. As early as the 1990s, we always had mobile repair teams on standby in Frankfurt that focused on on-wing engine repairs. These teams made a name for themselves throughout the industry. Since then, we have decentralized this topic and brought it out into the regions. AST® teams are now not only stationed in Europe, but also in Asia and North and South America and we have further developed these services to cover not only engine repairs but also structural, landing gear and composite repairs. This allows us to reach our customers even faster in their respective time zones – either because they need urgent help or because they want to avoid shop visits for their engines through targeted, planned measures. But that is just one of many examples. Another important topic in today’s MRO industry is IT. What’s Lufthansa Technik’s position in this area today? We have established interfaces to all important MRO IT platforms. No matter whether a customer uses AMOS, TRAX or another type of MRO IT to map its technical operations, we have the right “connector” for it. Customers don’t need to worry about how to connect their IT with ours; they get full transparency over all processes without having to adapt their IT systems. And not to forget, our customers also have access to our own web-based customer platform manage/m®, which covers all important aspects of a fleet’s technical operations and repairs. What is the current standpoint of airlines on outsourcing even strongly integrated MRO support? Did their view change in comparison to past? Over the years, we have noticed that airlines are opening up to external providers and backing away from doing their own maintenance. While airlines used to do many things themselves, they are now contracting out whole packages to MRO providers. A deep mind shift is taking place in this respect, especially in the Americas. That requires a great deal of trust, of course. But I think this is where our strength comes into play – namely our ability to also provide reliable support for large fleets, even at short notice. We have proven that time and again over the past years. Lufthansa Technik | 7 Lufthansa Technik Connection 2.2015 What is the key to this strength? In a nutshell, I think it’s the fact that we have developed the ability of bringing together data streams. We continuously receive data from flight operations, and we have the experience and all the important repair data from the workshops. By combining both intelligently, we are able to draw the right conclusions for optimum maintenance and to improve reliable operation at optimum cost level. Someone who only deals with the aircraft production, logistics or only sells components, for example, doesn’t have the insight to know what happens to the components and to draw the proper conclusion in terms of reliability and cost. How has the cooperation with manufacturers developed over the years? We have been able to establish a cooperation based on mutual trust. This allows us to be on board whenever new products and technologies are introduced. The topic of licensing and IP access is one of the biggest challenges for a manufacturerindependent repair shop. Although OEMs, including aircraft manufacturers, are becoming increasingly active in the market themselves, we have been able to achieve a lot as a group and have therefore ensured our access to repairs, processes and data for all new aircraft types such as the 787, A350, CSeries etc. Lufthansa Technik used to be above all an engineering company. What characterizes the company today? The technologies are the basis. They are the tools of the trade that need to be mastered, both then and now. So we are still technologically driven today. But these days it’s also important to fully understand the customer’s operation and needs and to be able to handle the entire process, the logistics chain and everything associated, be it taxes or customs. We’ve made a lot of progress with these aspects and built up the necessary resources over the past few years. Back in the day, products were primarily available off the shelf. How flexible is the company now? Customizing is a very important topic nowadays, no matter whether we’re talking about contracts or products. For one thing, we have to be flexible as far as the contract structure is concerned. This is currently evident in the talks about the support of the new A350, where no customer request is like the other. For another, if we want to be efficient, we have to know what the customer wants – even more so than in the past – and answer questions like “How far must the services be integrated?” and “What about the logistics chain and warehousing?” When we deliver something, we need to know exactly where it falls within our customers’ processes so that their operations can run as smoothly as possible. Within our decentralized new organization we have also established local pools, local AOG desks and local support teams to faster and better serve our customers. Let’s venture a glimpse into the future: What will Lufthansa Technik look like in ten years’ time? I see two important aspects: On the one hand, Lufthansa Technik will become even more decentralized and have a greater local presence. The proximity to and cooperation with customers will continue to increase. On the other hand, the question will be who in the industry can master the new technologies, repair procedures and processes. And: Who can handle the data volumes? Data backup and digital archiving are therefore already important topics for us today. The MRO products will be more capital-intensive. As a result, the investment strength for new products, repair procedures and above all materials and spare parts will play a major role. We have already demonstrated that we’re willing to make these investments both with the new aircraft generations and with supporting the life cycle of the popular aircraft all the way. Our entire network is committed to helping our company stand out in the market. And we don’t rest on our laurels. We have to stay attractive as far as costs are concerned, continue to be a reliable partner and never lose sight of our strengths. 8 | Aircraft Services Lufthansa Technik Connection 2.2015 Full throttle take-off for A350 support Lufthansa Technik has started servicing the A350 XWB with a comprehensive service spectrum. The first line maintenance checks have been signed off, and technicians are gathering practical experience with the new aircraft type. Ready for customer service, component support, spare parts supply as well as engine and APU support are all lined up. T he new year is getting off to a good start: From day one, Lufthansa Technik is establishing itself as a strong partner for the new Airbus A350 XWB which started revenue services in mid-January. As the latest step in this development, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted its maintenance approval for the long-haul jet, just in time for Lufthansa Technik to provide line maintenance to a first customer at Frankfurt airport. All-inclusive offer The foundation for this has been laid consequently during the last years. In 2011, Lufthansa Technik became a foundation member of the A350 Airline Office in Toulouse which brought along the opportunity to familiarize with details of the A350, its systems and maintenance procedures long before the first take-off. Lufthansa Technik’s A350 customers will also benefit from the company’s excellent relationships to original equipment and OEM. Honeywell provides more than manufacturers. It follows a year-long pilot project intended to reduce the maintenance costs of mature Trent 500 engines which power Airbus A340-500/600 aircraft. I n a pilot project Rolls-Royce’s expertise as engine manufacturer and Lufthansa Technik’s experience as one of the world’s largest engine maintenance providers were combined. The question pursued was: How can Trent 500 maintenance costs be reduced through the mature phase of the life-cycle? The work plays a significant element of ensuring Rolls-Royce has the capabilities to introduce TotalCare Flex®, a concept to address the service needs of customers with mature-phase engines, including the Trent 500. Joint efforts on several Trent 500 engines made it clear that tangible reductions in costs were achievable through systematic changes in workscope, improved use of used material, and optimized processes in the workshops. “This successful pilot project by RollsRoyce and Lufthansa Technik shows that a close partnership between a manufacturer and a maintenance organization offers advantages for airline customers and for both partners. Mature engines remain competitive for longer and the costs of operating them can be reduced,” said Bernhard Krüger-Sprengel, Senior Vice President Engine Services of Lufthansa Technik. AERO Alzey increases capability With Compliance Verification Engineers now on site, Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey has again increased its capability. The company was already integrated in Lufthansa Technik’s Design Organisation (DO) in 2013. F ollowing the integration and the appointment of the Design Engineers, the aim of Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey was to establish the position of Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) in Alzey and to assume responsibility for additional tasks and approval processes within the Design Assurance System. This required training for the named Design Engineers (Mirko Röder, Thomas Moors, and Friedhelm Breivogel) from PWC, GE and Repair Engineering with regard to the Verification Process. Thus all relevant departments of Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey are included in the extended DO process. The Head of Design Department, Technical Director Thomas Hoffmann, will continue to be responsible for all Design and Compliance Verification Engineers in Alzey. The introduction of the Compliance Verification Engineer capability at Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey was a “Significant Change” in the Lufthansa Technik Design Organisation Approval. This had to be authorised by EASA, and the required audit was conducted on November 6, 2014. The “Significant Change to Design Organisation System” was officially approved by EASA on December 2, 2014, and the new Compliance Verification Engineers were subsequently named. Having the Compliance Verification Engineer on site enables Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey to respond much faster to customer demands in the future. And parts repairs with state-of-the-art welding techniques or automated inspections are naturally also among the innovations that help us prepare for the technological challenges of the future. These are a unique selling point of Lufthansa Technik. What are the benefits of Lufthansa Technik’s direct connection to airline operations? Our connection to airline operations is an enabler in two respects. First, it allows us to move into new engine types via licenses. And second, our daily work enables us to continuously collect data and information on engine wear and tear. Generating information from this treasure trove of data and then using the information for overhauls is something we excel in. What’s the significance of the cooperation with engine manufacturers? I think there’s no way of getting around that. When airlines purchase an aircraft nowadays, they sign a contract with the engine manufacturer for twelve or more years. But the reality of the situation is that the manufacturers don’t do all the work themselves. That’s why we want to be the partner who fulfills the contract for the air- line in its day-to-day business – because we’re good at that and can provide added value in a targeted manner. What will be Lufthansa Technik Engine Services’ key to success in the future? For one thing, there’s the previously mentioned transition to long-term contracts between airlines and manufacturers. We’ve completely reorganized ourselves to accommodate that. We’re trying to get on board for this revolution and are sure that we’ll manage to ride the crest of the wave. The second topic deals with a kind of digital revolution. We need to create value for ourselves in the system. And this value is our knowledge of parameters and engines. We know the individual parts and what the life cycle of an engine component is like. We have to continue to expand this wealth of information because that is our guarantee for all future developments. And how do you foresee the market environment in the future? We will keep our focus on the needs of airlines, our most valued customers. However, in parallel we will build up capabilities to serve the needs of manufacturer-contracted engine services. I believe we are in a good position to deliver value to both. And in this constellation, too, it will be crucial to offer the right price-performance ratio and innovative products. 14 | Aircraft Modification Lufthansa Technik Connection 2.2015 Upgrade to the future Lufthansa Technik has restructured its Aircraft Modification business unit for commercial aircraft and positioned itself as a partner of choice for all modification and upgrade requirements, from the cabin and cockpit through to IFE and connectivity. Whether an upgrade of leased aircraft fleets or the roll-out of a new in-flight product for an entire fleet. N ew aircraft generations, new airframe structures, more efficient engines and aircraft systems: Technologies in aviation have been undergoing a rapid process of change for several years now. In order to meet customer demands and to stay ahead in today’s highly competitive airline industry, high-density cabin layouts are rapidly developed along with new and improved on-board infotainment systems. Consequently, both airlines and OEMs are under increasing pressure to introduce new technologies in the shortest possible time-to-market. Having supported the fleet upgrades of the Lufthansa Group and international customers for decades – most recently the German flag carrier’s intercontinental fleet’s new first and business class – Lufthansa Technik knows first-hand that passengers love airlines for what they offer them. And from experience, it doesn’t always take a new fleet to offer passengers a state-ofthe-art cabin product. The one-stop shop Lufthansa Technik recently restructured its expertise in the area of aircraft modification to improve its visibility and responsiveness in all respects for its customers as a onestop shop. The Aircraft Modification business unit provides one-stop support for the entire process involved in any a modification program, covering areas such as Cabin & Structures, Cockpit Modification and Inflight Communication & Entertainment (see info box on page 15). Right at that early stage when an airline is initially considering a fleet modification, it pays to call on the experience of Lufthansa Technik. Taking account of budgetary and certification limitations, a wellorchestrated modification will give any aged cabin that modern look, feel and functionality crucial to improving the passenger inflight experience. Lufthansa Technik’s approach to cabin modernization focuses on four pillars. 1. Configuration Experience shows that replacing older seats with new, lighter ones – possibly combined with a new IFE system even on narrowbody aircraft and an inseat power supply (ISPS) – is a great starting point for instantly increasing your passengers’ inflight experience. The purpose of the sub-project “AutoPro+” is to evaluate the potential of future automation solutions at Lufthansa Technik by determining the greatest benefits and the possible route to further automation of the processes. The results will then serve as a reliable basis for the evaluation of future automation projects. Partners in this sub-project are the “Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung” (Center for Applied Aviation Research), which is also the coordinator for the overall AutoPro project, Lufthansa Technik, and the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. I n industrial processes, robots provide support for workers while ensuring consistent top quality with high levels of productivity. The objective of the Auto-Pro project, running from March 2014 to February 2016, is to generate efficient automation solutions and promote the exchange of expertise among the project partners in the city of Hamburg. Divided into three complementary sub-projects differing in terms of their concepts and their technologies, each project is carried out by different project partners. The city of Hamburg supports the overall Auto-Pro project and its sub-projects through the LuFo program operated by its Department for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation. Route to automation In the “Auto-Pro I” sub-project run by Lufthansa Technik and the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, the “MORFI” robot demonstrator is to undergo further refinement. To this end, maintenance and overhaul processes for commercial aircraft were analyzed and evaluated with the objective of ascertaining how well they could be automated using a mobile robot. In addition, a customized navigation system was developed for aircraft-independent positioning. It replaces the A300 that the French company previously operated on behalf of several European space agencies. In 2013, Novespace opened its parabolic flights to the public so that they too could discover weightlessness. W hat started off as a routine task for Lufthansa Technik developed into an extremely challenging project over the course of time. Delays were experienced in particular in ensuring compliance with the latest fatigue requirements in order to assure a safe operation for the next decades for this special mission aircraft. The ongoing upgrade of the aircraft involves a real balancing act between its past and future use. Originally supplied with a standard cabin configuration, the Airbus A310 was retrofitted with a modern cabin in 1990 for use as an aircraft for the German government, the A310-304 VIP 10+21 “Konrad Adenauer”, including some 1,300 modifications to the structure, electrics and various systems. What was distinctive here in operational terms was that the aircraft was operated under a military license by the German Air Force. Fatigue requirements When the old cabin was removed in fall 2014, there was also no further need for its attachment to the aircraft structure. However, because various frames and other structural elements were weak- ened by the VIP installation, the situation that faced Jörg Paisen, Project Manager for the conversion at Lufthansa Technik, was somewhat unexpected: “Not only the conversion back to a defined zero state for the modification envisaged by Novespace, rather also proof of the fatigue strength of the structure for future use for all parts affected by the modification had to be proven to the authorities. The latest fatigue regulations therefore had to be taken into account.” Repairs were required for all fatigue-critical areas, which also had to be verified by means of calculation. Fulfilling these requirements involved hundreds of individual repairs, with new calculated proof required additionally for some 90 of these. The unplanned additional time this entailed prolonged the layover period considerably. The schedule was back on track at the beginning of February 2015 and the planned repairs were carried out extensively. The final installation then commenced mid-month, followed by the system tests. Lufthansa Technik left nothing to chance when it came to planning and designing the installations. The various customer requirements were addressed and implemented meticulously. The lighting installation in the experimental section of the aircraft is an excellent example. According to Jörg Paisen: “We listened intently to the client and initially constructed a mock-up of the section to make sure the client’s requirements were fulfilled precisely. Because the scientists “fly” through the cabin and may bump, the lighting system has to be able to endure this. The final solution involves an arrangement of nine light strips per section (total 19 sections) behind shatterproof plastic. � Please continue on page 24 8500 m 370 km/h 7600 m 570 km/h 6100 m 825 km/h Hypergravity 20 seconds Zero gravity 22 seconds Hypergravity 20 seconds Each zero gravity phase is preceded and followed by a hypergravity phase, putting considerable stress on the aircraft. Parabolic flights Parabolic flights with aircraft are the unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to perform scientific experiments and technical tests in weightlessness by their own hands. Weightlessness is achieved by special maneuvers piloting the aircraft upwards about 50 degrees nose-up, then “free-falling” through a parabolic arch for 22 seconds of weightlessness followed by a pull-out with 45 degrees nose down. 24 | Aircraft Services Lufthansa Technik Connection 2.2015 Controlled gas exit Some scientific experiments produce exhaust gases. Therefore, a dumping system to the outside of the plane has to be installed to prevent exhausting gases into the cabin. The window panes were replaced by window plugs at four positions for this purpose. These maintain the cabin pressure and are fitted with a pressure feed-through that withstands a differential pressure of 5 tons/m². The gases can be expelled in a controlled manner into the surrounding atmosphere by means of an adapter and an intermediate valve. Special impact resistance During the parabolic flight maneuvers the aircraft experiences different acceleration phases such as hypergravity and weightlessness. To prevent people on board to be hurt when moving against the cabin walls soft padding has to be mounted in the experimental section of the fuselage. These are based on standard versions from commercial aircraft but are reinforced by an additional sandwich layer laminated under vacuum to comply with regulations, which require that the segments have a particularly high impact and tensile strength. The impact-absorbing layer is then finally bonded onto this. Cockpit modification Special instruments are installed in the cockpit to enable flights with reduced or zero gravity – the standard instruments do not allow adequate resolution of velocity, acceleration and angle of attack. A French specialist is supplying certified components in this case and Lufthansa Technik is supporting and executing the installation. The system is designed to allow different planetary gravity scenarios to be tested in flight. Therefore the Airbus 310 ZERO-G will be the only parabolic aircraft in the world to allow such precise maneuvers with different acceleration values and high-quality scientific experiments. Last but not least: The removal of some 200 seats reduced the weight considerably and meant that the aircraft’s center of gravity was displaced to the rear. To counterbalance this, a high power rack installed to provide electrical energy for the experiments was constructed in an excessively solid design. Weighing 500 kg, the rack ensures an acceptable center of gravity position, which can also be finely adjusted by means of an additional ballast pallet, with a capacity of maximum 2,000 kg, carrying individual 80 kg plates. Special heavy-duty adapters were integrated in the cabin floor for installing the instrument racks, which can bear the concentrated loads of potential laboratory equipment, etc. Jörg Paisen is in no doubt: “We listened intently to the client and are confident the solution fits the client’s needs precisely. I am certain we are delivering a product in which the researchers will really feel safe.” Delivery of the modified aircraft is planned for end of March 2015. At the end of April/ beginning of May the German Aerospace Center DLR, French Space Agency CNES and the European Space Agency ESA will organize the first scientific parabolic flight campaign with this very unique Airbus A310 ZERO-G from its new home base Bordeaux-Mérignac in France. Five more scientific missions will follow in 2015 as well as several flights for paying passengers seeking to experience weightlessness. For more information: www.manage-m.com T hailand’s budget airline Nok Air, a Total Technical Support (TTS®) customer of Lufthansa Technik, has been successfully growing at a fast pace over the recent years. The carrier currently operates 18 737NG aircraft, two ATR 72, and recently acquired four Q400s, all of which are managed within the Technical Operations WebSuite manage/m®. As a result of the growth, more personnel is required to manage the increasing workload. The customer uses manage/m® to a full extent to manage his maintenance operations and fulfill his role as an operator towards the authorities. In order to use the WebSuite in the best way possible, the new Nok Air staff was given the opportunity to participate in a phase-in training by manage/m® product manager Michael Weidemann on-site in Bangkok. Weidemann gave the staff an insight into the process world of Lufthansa Technik, showed how it fits together with Nok Air’s operational requirements, and how it is reflected in manage/m®. Together with Total Operations Management (TOM) fleet manager Cengiz Armutlu he trained the participants on how to use the system, for example make entries and retrieve information. The trained Nok Air staff is primarily working in engineering, quality management and planning. Thus, all functions covering the respective maintenance aspects were covered. The training participants enjoyed the in-depth insight into the new functions and features within manage/m®. Especially the new Customer Work Instruction (CWI) impressed the Nok Air staff. This function allows customers to additionally create individual job cards for tasks not handled within the Lufthansa Technik contract. “Cengiz Armutlu and I gave a detailed instruction of how this feature could be used in accordance with Nok Air’s specific processes and necessities,” explains Weidemann. Many customers are currently interested in using the CWI function, Nok Air will eventually be the first one to employ it. For this purpose the customer will set up a separate project in which he synchronizes the CWI with his processes. “Nok Air emphasized that the CWI function is a clear sign that manage/m® continues to develop into the right direction,” says Weidemann. O ne of the world’s leading leisure travel groups has selected Lufthansa Technik to provide comprehensive component services for its Airbus fleet. An integrated solution was developed for Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium, Thomas Cook Airlines United Kingdom, Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia and Condor in Germany. The contract signed in mid-January covers all ATA chapters of the aircraft and also includes the fleet expansion the Thomas Cook Group is preparing. The Total Component Support Lufthansa Technik already provided for Condor since 1998 is expanded to the whole Thomas Cook Group. It is also the first TCS® contract with a British customer. “The consolidation of all Airbus component service requirements into one contract manifests a further crucial step in our Group Airlines transformation process. The TCS® comprises component repair and overhaul services as well as material pooling, transportation services and home base support in Brussels, Manchester, London Gatwick, Copenhagen and BerlinSchönefeld. Lufthansa Technik will provide technical support via its international network. With its integrated approach solution the new contract will help the Thomas Cook Group Airlines to create synergies within its MRO acitivities, resulting in increased availability and reliability as well as improved economics.
