DUMAYAS Teacher III Guimba West Central School Guimba West District, Nueva Ecija Instilling good moral values in the growing period of a child is critical, because it is the foundation of a sound mental and educational development that shapes his/her well-being. At home and more especially in school, it should be part of a child’s daily existence. Education is a methodical effort towards learning basic facts about humanity. And the core idea behind value education is to cultivate essential values in the students so that the civilization that teaches us to manage complexities can be sustained and further developed. Teaching value education begins at home and it is continued in schools. Everyone accepts certain things in his/her life through various mediums like society or government. Good values are held as treasures in the heart and they must be kept forever. Value education is important to help everyone in improving the value system that he/she holds and put them to use. Once, we understand our values in life, we can examine and control the various choices we make in our lives. It’s our duty to uphold the various types of values in life such as cultural values, universal values, personal values and social values. Thus, value education is always essential to shape a student’s life and to give him an opportunity of performing himself on the global stage. The need for value education among the parents, children, teachers etc, is constantly increasing as we continue to witness increasing violent activities, behavioral disorder and lack of unity in society. Accordingly, the family system in India has a long tradition of imparting value education right from the ancient practice of the “gurukul” system. But with modern developments and a fast changing role of the parents, it has not been very easy for the parents to impart relevant values in their wards. Therefore many institutions today conduct various value education programs that meet the rising needs of modern society, the code of conduct and values. These activities concentrate on the development of the children, young adults, etc. focusing on areas like happiness, humility, cooperation, honesty, simplicity, love, unity, peace etc. In the earlier days, kids are very aware of their responsibilities because good moral values are taught very and strictly and kids are bound to follow without hesitation. But nowadays, the real meaning of the words pale in comparison as today’s kids have become westernized, the foreign cultures had greatly influenced our youth. People in other countries greatly differ in terms of moral values, compared to most Filipinos, because western culture, like the American’s way of life is highly liberalized. Filipino traditions and culture more than ever is unique in many ways, even in this computer age. Value formation is very critical in the lives of our children and it is a must. The Filipino values and even traditions that have been imparted to us from generations need to be restored - because they are purely Filipino. Bongbong endorses Antonino as Ecija gov bet JAEN, Nueva Ecija – He says the elections are still too far away to talk about politics. But Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., gave himself away, endorsing a former congressman as his gubernatorial candidate in the 2016 elections. In a brief exchange with the media during an out-of-town sortie here Saturday, Marcos referred to former threeterm Rep. Rodolfo Antonino as “governor” amid reports that the latter, father of fourth district Rep. Magnolia Antonino, is seeking the governorship. Antonino has not officially declared his gubernatorial bid although reports going around said his running mate is outgoing three-term second district Rep. Joseph Gilbert Violago. Antonino comes from a family of politicians. His father Gaudencio was sitting senator and was running for reelection when he died in a helicopter accident in 1969, a day before the elections. Gaudencio’s wife Magnolia ran as a substitute candidate and won. One of the former congressman’s brother Adelbert was twice elected representative of South Cotabato and twice mayor of General Santos City while Adelbert’s wife Lualhati was also once congresswoman. Antonino’s niece is Darlene Antonino, a former three-term representative who was best remembered for defeating boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in their congressional duel in South Cotabato in his first run at local politics. Antonino is hoping to dislodge the camp of outgoing three-term Gov. Aurelio Umali from the Capitol where the latter has ruled since unseating the Josons from their 48-year reign. He was best remembered for ending the decades-old reign of the Villareals in the fourth district. Antonino is not only counting on votes from his southern Nueva Ecija bailiwick but also from the support of the Josons and Cabanatuan Mayor Julius Cesar Vergara who is feuding with Umali, his former political ally. Umali’s wife, third district Rep. Czarina Umali, is already a declared gubernatorial bet. Marcos came here on the invitation of the elder Antonino who showed up with some of his mayoral allies, namely San Antonio Mayor Antonino Lustre, Cabiao Mayor Gloria Crespo-Congco and Jaen Mayor Santiago Austria. When Marcos posed for a photo-ops with newsmen, Antonino volunteered to take the shot himself, prompting the senator to tell the scribes, “See, you have a congressman for your photographer. And one who will become governor,” he said. Antonino took the compliment with a smile. Earlier, Marcos, when asked about his political plans, declined to make any specific response. He said he is definitely not retiring in 2016 and will be a candidate for certain positions. “There is too much to do. There’s little time to speak about politics. It’s not yet part of the discussions,” he said. – Manny G TRIMEDIA VIBRATIONS Publisher of: Editorial & Business Address: 1013 Barangay Malasin, San Jose City Province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines E-mail Address: [email protected] Contact Nos. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at a press conference in Barangay Langla here recently. The younger Marcos was referring to the reported operations of groups of people who claimed to be caretakers of Marcos assets worth billions of pesos. He said the money racket has been practically operating in many provinces in the country, claiming to have ties with the Marcoses. “This has become all too-prevalent and we warn you, don’t let yourself be fooled by these people,” he said. Marcos issued the warning after newsmen brought to his attention the activities of syndicates, including two suspects who claimed to be caretakers of the Marcos assets. Only recently, he said, they were able to apprehend someone posing as their relative who was engaged in fund-raising using the Marcoses’ name. Early this year, two suspects were also charged for milking money from individuals. The suspects, identified as Felicisima Cantos and Emmanuel Destura demanded money from 81 individuals supposedly to have their share of the Marcos wealth. The National Bureau of Investigation said that in January 2012, Destura and Cantos introduced themselves to complainants as caretakers of the Marcos assets and talked them into investing in their company called Bullion Buyers Limited with office address in China. The two also persuaded them to recruit more members nationwide so that accordingly, by numbers, they have their strength as claimants of the Marcos’ wealth and could have more company shares. After investing P2,000 each, the suspects promised the victims a profit of P5 million to $5 million. But the suspects failed to deliver the promise, prompting the victims to seek NBI help. In Southern Leyte, a massive tree planting project operating under the acronym FIRM for “Friends of Imelda Romualdez Marcos” has been attracting thousands of members in the province with the promise they would share the gold bullions of the former First Lady which is alleged stashed away in 177 foreign banks. Under the scheme all that was needed to join FIRM was to buy and plant a mahogany tree, build a red fence around it, pay a P300 registration fee (which entitles the member to a red T-shirt) and the applicant would automatically qualify for a share of Imelda’s wealth at between P700,000 to P1 million per member. According to Southern Leyte State University President Dr. Gloria Markines Reyes, she learned about the project from BontocVice Mayor Pedro Fustanes who told her that some of his supporters had asked him if they could join FIRM since it was easy money. Fustanes said he advised them not to since it had all the makings of a scam but that some had already planted the trees and had paid the membership fee. One of the victims said many of his friends had even borrowed money to join FIRM because they believed the organization was legitimate and qualified them for riches beyond their imagination. AFP acquires ... from page 1 modernization program and in spite of the “missing rifles” scandal. An initial 100 of these units were given out in this military camp Thursday afternoon, with 27,200 more to be distributed within this month and another 12,000 in December, according to AFP Chief of Staff, Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang. Catapang said the new rifles, involving 5.56mm M4 rifles, form part of the joint Philippine ArmyPhilippine Marine Corps Assault Rifles Acquisition Project (PAPMPCARAP) of the government. Catapang was assisted by 7th Infantry Division commanding general, Brig. Gen. Glorioso Miranda, during the turn-over of the initial 100 units at the firing range here to troops from the Light Reaction Regiment (LRR) of the Special Operation Command (Socom) and 79th Infantry Battalion under 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) who have undergone the Battalion of Excellence (BOC) training. Catapang said the Army is set to receive a total of 44,186 units while another branch, the Philippine Navy, will Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos (3rd from left,) former 3-term 4th District congressman Rodolfo W. Antonino and wife incumbent Congw. Magnolia “Megan” Antonino-Nadres of the same district are shown on top photo during the senator’s sorte in Nueva Ecija. (photo by Bernie Diaz) He said they were also promised free education, employment and housing. FIRM was organized in 2000, formerly composed of Marcos loyalists. Its critics claim its goal was to keep the groups supporting the former president intact and to serve as the nationwide organization for the get 6,443 units. The funds for the weapons were sourced from the AFP Capability Upgrade Program of 2012. The US-based Remington Outdoor Company won the public bidding in October last year. “This weapons program will contribute significantly to the transformation of the AFP into a multi-mission oriented force capable of confronting both internal and external threats,” Catapang said. The heavy-barreled, full automatic, wearresistant rifles will replace the old, worn-out M16A2 assault rifles. C o m p a r a t i v e l y, the M4 Carbine rifle is lighter, shorter, more cost-efficient and can reach a target up to 600 meters. In contrast, the M16-A1 rifle’s maximum ceffective range is only up to 460 meters. Catapang said they chose to give these new rifles to field soldiers because they are the front liners and “so we must assure that they are fully equipped in every encounter.” He stressed that soldiers should live with the paradigm “kawal disiplinado, bawal abusado dapat asintado (disciplined soldier, no to abusiveness and must be a sharpshooter).” – Manny Galvez DTI launches Phl Business Registry in two towns, one city of Nueva Ecija By: Camille C. Nagaño TALAVERA, Nueva Ecija, September 1 (PIA) -- Starting a business in the towns of Talavera and Guimba as well as San Jose City is made faster and more convenient with the launching of the Philippine Business Registry (PBR) in those areas. “PBR is the integration of registration processes of five government line agencies namely Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Bureau of Internal Revenue, Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-ibig, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Social Security System into a single application system, which cuts down the processing time from two weeks to 30 minutes,” DTI National Economic Research Business Assistance Center Central Manager for Region 3 Raquel Malig said. “To be able to get senator’s presidential campaigns. The senator disowned the movement and said their family does not operate that way. – Manny Galvez necessary permits from the municipal or city business permits and licensing office (BPLO), applicants must first register their business with these line agencies. Hence, PBR serves as the first step to secure business permits from the BPLO,” Malig added. Under the agreement, the three local government units shall provide personnel who will man and process the papers referred to the PBR whose office shall be located within the municipal or city hall. DTI, for its part, shall provide the needed trainings of the local government staff and make the acquisition of the business name easier. Among the areas in the country that has committed to the PBR include the cities of Quezon, Valenzuela, Muntinlupa, Batangas, Iloilo, and Cagayan De Oro. (CLJD/CCN-PIA 3) 4 SEPTEMBER 1-7, 2014 Palace order... and that they used a “musikang bumbong” in assaulting the Spanish garrison in the afternoon of September 2,1896. In 2011, Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications and Operations Office (PCOO) said the NHCP, led by its executive director Ludovico Badoy should conduct a thorough research on the historic event and make facts and figures “accurate” and “realistic” to give justice to its heroes. This after local historian Jose Hipolito said one of these errors include accounts that up to 3,000 revolutionaries from this town marched towards San Isidro with the use of a “musikang bumbong” where they assaulted the Spanish garrison in the afternoon of September 2,1896. “That is fatally wrong. The fact is only 753 revolutionaries laid siege in San Isidro and they marched there accompanied not by “musikang bumbong” but by a brass band,” Hipolito said. He said that the 3,000 supposed revolutionaries were too bloated a number and would clearly constitute an “overkill” on the part of Llanera’s group since they were up against only 100 Spanish soldiers. Hipolito said he knew of no one who conducted a realistic and in-depth research about the revolution and its heroes. “I was the only one who went to the National Archives to conduct my own research,” he said. Aside from the glaring historical inaccuracies, Mayor Gloria CrespoCongco also questioned that the center of celebrations for the fom page 1 annual event is often held in the provincial capital Palayan City and not in this town. She said she had nothing against holding festivities in other towns to commemorate the event for Novo Ecijanos to appreciate history but said Cabiao’s role should be given utmost importance. The late 69-year-old head of the marching band that stormed the Spanish garrison in San Isidro also said Cabiao should be given recognition as the rightful venue for anniversary rites. Raul Nogoy, Banda, ’96 leader said San Isidro (then known as Factoria) can not be considered as the center of the celebrations neither because this was where the Spaniards held fort. The provincial government, led by Gov. Aurelio Umali, Vice Gov. Jose Gay Padiernos and third district Rep. Czarina Umali, has held various activities to usher Nueva Ecija Day consisting of a harana, health caravan, quiz bee, sikad Novo Ecijano, muscle showdown, agriaqua ctrade fair, hair and make-up Olympics, aerobics competition, Binibining Nueva Ecija pageant, boxing competitions, the search for the outstanding young Novo Ecijanos and the 1st governor’s cup shooting competitions. Today’s provincial government-led activity will be held at the old provincial capitol, according to provincial administrator Al Abesamis. When asked for his reaction regarding the issue over the venue, Abesamis did not return text messages. Local officials in Cabiao said it is only fitting that organizers consider the town as the center of celebrations because General Llanera was from Barangay San Roque here. The event marks the day when Llanera and Gen. Pantaleon Valmonte led homegrown revolutionaries, armed only with 100 guns, bolos and pointed sticks in assaulting the Spanish garrison in San Isidro on September 2,1896, two days after the “Unang Sigaw ng Balintawak.” Waving black and red flag, the revolutionaries caught the Spanish guardia civil by surprise. For its role in the revolution, the province earned its place in the Philippine flag as one of the eight rays of the sun, each ray representing the province that revolted against the Spaniards. Manny Galvez 2 detained ... from page 1 was in compliance with a commitment order issued by San Jose City RTC 39 Judge Cynthia Martinez-Florendo. They were received at 7 pm Wednesday by Jail Officer 2 Renato C. Fernandez Jr. The two are facing charges for violations of Republic Act 10591 and Republic Act 9516. Salonga and Cadano were arrested by joint teams from the Army’s 7th Infantry Division and the Nueva Ecija police in a house in Barangay R.T. Padilla, Carranglan town on August 9. The lawmen were serving an arrest warrant to suspected New People’s Army commander Ely Taray, also known as Ka Emong. The military said the two were platoon guides of the NPA unit operating in Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya and Pangasinan provinces. But they identified themselves to arresting teams as organizers of the youth groups Kabataan and Anakbayan. Cadano and Salonga are Pi Sigma and Sigma Kappa Pi fraternity members, respectively. They obtained degrees in business management and psychology, respectively at the UP Diliman Extension program in Pampanga province at Clark Freeport. Cecil Ruiz, chair of the human rights watchdog Karapatan in Central Luzon, said the arrest warrant was for Taray, not for Cadana and Salonga which is a blatant violation of the two former UP students’ human rights. Ruiz said the two were forced by their captors to admit they were NPA rebels during interrogation, a claim which the military and police denied. Villanueva said the two were treated well in the PPSC compound where they were detained. – Manny Galvez DEED OF EXTRA-JUDICIAL SETTLEMENT WITH SALE NOTICE is hereby given that the only forced and surviving heirs of the late widow JUANA TORALBA MUECA who died intestate on February 25, 1976 in San Jose City, Province of Nueva Ecija had exec uted a DEED OF EXTRA-JUDICIAL SETTLEMENT WITH SALE dated August 24, 2014 over real estate properties described and embraced in TRANSFER CERTIFICATE (TCT) NO. 5904 containing an area of THREE THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED TWENTY (3,420) square meters, more or less, and TRANSFER CERTIFICATE OF TITLE (TCT) NO. 5941 containing an area of FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY ONE (481) square meters, more or less, all situated in Bo. (Trimedia Whistle-blowers – September 1, 8 & 15, 2014) ROLES OF TEACHERS IN SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP MELODY C. SINDAC P.h.D. Head Teacher Ill Juan L. Bautista Elementary School Lagare, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija The role of teachers in the primary education of the youth is paramount because they are role models emulated and as such they influence greatly the academic development of their wards. In the community, they represent their school as partners of local leaders and residents in community development and related matters. Also, teachers’ responsibility does not focus alone in their pupils but they also share some responsibility with other school officials to attain the noble objectives of the learning institution they represent. They share a common goal and that is the promotion and advancement of the educational and spiritual well-being of every pupils/students in their respective schools. Aside from rethinking their primary responsibility as builders of student learning, teachers are also taking on other roles in schools and in their profession. They are working with colleagues, family members, politicians, academics, community members, employers, and others to set clear and obtainable standards for the knowledge, skills, and values we should expect Filipino children to acquire. Teachers are participating in day-to-day decision making in schools, working side-by-side to set priorities, and dealing with organizational problems that affect their students’ learning. When needed, they attend to consultative meetings with community leaders and other organizations to develop a partnership that would result into a unified action as the need arises. Many teachers also spend time researching various questions of educational effectiveness that expand the understanding of the dynamics of learning. And more teachers are spending time mentoring new members of their profession, making sure that education school graduates are truly ready for the complex challenges of today’s classrooms. Redefining the role of teachers inside and outside the classroom can result in significantly better schools and better-educated students. But though the roots of such improvement are taking hold in today’s schools, they need continued nurturing to grow and truly transform the Philippine’s learning landscape. The rest of us -- politicians and parents, superintendents and school board members, employers and education school faculty -- must also be willing to rethink our roles in education to give teachers the support, freedom, and trust they need to do the essential job of educating our children. Foremost, teachers’ professional development should come hand in hand with the pupils based on an old idiom that says “If the teacher has not taught, the pupil has not learned.” Highly trained educators gives quality education, it is known fact. The national government, particularly the Department of Education (DepEd), continue to provide basic and continuing education to public school teachers in the hope of making quality education affordable down to the lowest group of the society. As provided for and guaranteed by our Constitution, every Filipino child is entitled to quality education, a right that the DepEd tries hard to uphold by giving the best training to our public school teachers. 5 SEPTEMBER 1-7, 2014 27% of CL... fom page 1 849 in Nueva Ecija, 159 out of 511 in Tarlac, 97 out of 569 in Bulacan, 94 out of 237 in Bataan, 72 out of 230 in Zambales and 42 out of 151 in Aurora. The data was presented during a drug summit sponsored by the city government of Palayan at the convention center here Friday. Mayor Adrianne Mae Cuevas of this host city said the summit was intended to rally all local government units (LGUs) to take concerted action against illegal drugs. She stressed that licking the drug problem is the responsibility of everyone, not just local officials like her. The summit was highlighted by the signing of a covenant and declaration of commitment and in the anti-drug campaign involving local officials led by Gov. Aurelio Umali and the city and municipal mayors. Umali, who is also chairman of the Regional Peace and Order Council, said that the provincial government would earmark P10 million to finance the anti-drug campaign. He said the province has long been in the forefront of the campaign, highlighted by “takbo laban sa droga (anti-drug fun run)” to heighten awareness on the drug menace and an earlier drug summit. Based on the PDEA report, shabu remains the most commonly used drugs in the region, accounting for 62%. I n t e r i o r Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera batted for incentives to law enforcers who are in the forefront of the campaign. He said that presently, only civilian informers are authorized to receive P75,000 for every kilo of shabu seized or a maximum of P2 million for any information on a successful drug operation. Aurelio Umali told farmers during a gathering in this town that only 44,000 hectares out of the more than 100,000 hectares agricultural lands in the province, Pampanga and Bulacan would be able to receive irrigation water due to El Niño whose effects are likely to be felt in the last quarter of the year. He said this projection was arrived at following his dialogue with officials of the Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation Systems, the operator of the Pantabangan Dam. “This is a big blow to farmers so we have to prepare them for this worse-case scenario,” he said. Umali said the provincial government is pushing through with its water summit next week to prepare Nueva Ecija against the adverse effects of the dreaded El Niño phenomenon on food production and water supply in the country’s rice granary. He said if not addressed, this will impact on food security targets on a nationwide scale. The summit, originally scheduled last July 30, was deferred as the provincial government convened various agencies towards formulating an action plan against El Niño. Umali said he has utilized his intelligence funds for the de-silting of the Peñaranda River to ensure smooth delivery of irrigation water while the province braces for El Niño. In late July, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration advised Filipinos to prepare for below normal rainfall in the last quarter of the year, as scientists are predicting the development of a “weak to moderate” El Niño during the period. Pagasa administrator Vicente Malano said below normal rainfall is SEPTEMBER 1-7, 2014 likely in most areas of Luzon and the Visayas while near normal rainfall conditions are expected over Cagayan, Camarines Norte, Albay, Eastern and Central Visayas and most areas of Mindanao in the months of October, November and December. The last time El Niño hit the country was in 2009 and experts said the phenomenon happens every four to five years. Umali said the province will have to be prepared for El Niño particularly since water elevation in the Pantabangan Dam continues to drop. In the last week of July, water level at the dam was at 179.04 meters above sea level (masl) and according to the National Irrigation Administration, it would take only 22 days of zero rainfall for the water level to shrink to its critical level of 171 masl, which happened nearly two decades ago. The water level rose above 180 masl only because the provincial government initiated cloud-seeding operations in partnership with First Gen. Corp. and other private entities. Yesterday, water level at the dam was at 186.2 masl, according to UPRIIS operations manager Reynaldo Puno. The water summit will try to identify the areas in the province which will potentially be hit hard by the prolonged dry spell and mitigate its impact on local farmers. It will also come out with projection on the extent of damage. Umali said farmers will be included in the consultations because they are the ones who will bear the brunt of El Niño. The provincial government is also looking at tapping other alternative sources of irrigation water to lessen the province’s dependence on the Pantabangan Dam. With the dam not fully operational, the utilization of the Peñaranda River, the Tayabo Dam and other upstream water sources to augment supply is also being explored. – Manny Galvez NO TO DRUGS - Binigyang diin ni Nueva Ecija Gov. (Bernie Diaz) 7 SEPTEMBER 1-7, 2014 Marcos starts roaming, but no plans yet BALANGA CITY, Bataan- Senator Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos, perceived by many as presidential hopeful, has started roaming around the country but said he has no plans yet for 2016. This was the statement of Senator Bongbong Marcos when asked by local media in Balanga City if he is gunning for either presidency or vice presidency in 2016 national election. But the visiting of various provinces of the senator and talking to a lot of political leaders, students and labor groups indicates thah he is bent on running for the highest post in the country come 2016 presidential election. A son and namesake of the former storngman Pres Marcos, the senator has more than enough resources to finance his candidacy but his low popularity rating from the public has prompted his group to think what strategy they could do to raise his low popularity from the public . Although he was warmly welcomed by Bataan people led by Gov Abet S Garcia last Friday here, Marcos said his camp is not talking about it because there are still a lot of projects and policies that should be given priority today. The senator was also mum on who is he supporting among the presidential frontrunners but local newsmen believe he is bent on running for the presidency since it is too late for him if he not runs come 2016 presidential elections. -Mar T Supnad BALANGA CITY, Bataan- With the acute shortage of power supply particularly in the coming years, the revival of the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) has snowballed as no less than Senator Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos categorically stated Friday here that he is personally in favor for the operations of the Bataan Nuclear Power plant. “I would like the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant to operate,” said Marcos in response to a querry from a local newsman here inside the Crown Royale hotel here. In defending the operation of the BNPP, Senator Marcos in a press briefing in Balanga City cited the Nuclear power plant in South Korea which he said has the same structure, design and lay out as that of the BNPP “but until now it is operating safely.” The BNPP was constructed by Sen. Marcos father, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos, but was mothballed during the time of President Cory Aquino in what observers believe was marred more by po- litical reason than its real purpose. Sen. Marcos said the mothballed plant can help in the badly needed power supply of the country today, which is experiencing almost daily brown outs. During a dialog with local officials here, Mayor Jorge Estanislao also said that the people of Morong town, where the BNPP is constructed, are open to any constructive proposal for the mothballed power plant, saying this will boost the much needed economic activity of his town. To date, Central Luzon ASSESSING THE PROS AND CONS OF COMPUTER LITERACY ROBINA D. PAUTIN Teacher III Balingog East Elementary School Guimba West District, Nueva Ecija The advent of computer literacy in the educational system has created a lot of development as it fastracked the method of teaching, thereby giving the pupils more opportunity to learn other things with the help of advance technology in the schools. Compared to the early days where the use of manual writing is the standard procedure which is considered traditional, the learning ability of a child is somewhat slow-paced, less interesting and sometimes leads to boredom on the part of the pupils. But with the inclusion of computer lessons in the school curriculum, even pre-schoolers since twenty of thirty years back in the already developed countries have advanced their learning skills compared to the children in less-developed countries. The computer has systematized not only the teaching methodology of every school as an institution but also all government and private offices, including private abodes and individuals. The computers indeed are tools that simplifies a job, modernize a system and contributes to the reduction of overhead expenses in labor-intensive facilities. But to the youth who are yet to understand the good and bad effects of too much exposure to the computers, more particularly the computer games or video games, and other electronicoperated gadgets, the risk of having to absorb too much radiation may occur, depending on the quality of a machine. In thickly populated areas, the presence of said machines are noteworthy. Computer shops catering to children of varying ages are prevalent and some students may have been escaping from their classes to play games which is detrimental to their future, if operation is not regulated. While at home, many teeners can be seen listening to CDs through the earphones closely tucked in their eardrums even while reviewing so chances are the lesser attention they give to what they are supposed to do tends to divert their attention and their ability learn more is also at risk. To prevent the proliferation of those establishment , city and municipal Ordinances that have been enacted to regulate the operation of computer shops, video karera and video machines and the like should be implemented to deter such activities that are inimical to children’s education. OPTIONAL TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR TEACHERS JENNY P. ANINGAT Teacher III Cabu Elementary Cabu Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija As any good teacher knows, all students do not learn in the same way. In addition, it is common for a class of students to be at a variety of levels in any particular subject. Teachers need to use different teaching methods in order to reach all students effectively. A variety of teaching strategies, knowledge of student levels, and an implementation of which strategies are best for particular students can help teachers to know which teaching methods will be most effective for their class. The first step to choosing a teaching method is to assess the students. This assessment can be formal or informal. Formal assessments include standardized tests from the textbook or curriculum being used, or teachercreated tests. These assessments can give you an idea of the previous instruction that the students have received as well as their academic level. The students in your class may have undergone various teaching methods and quality of instruction in previous years. Good teachers know their students, if you have been teaching students. If you have been teaching a particular group of students for sometime, you probably already know quite a bit about their interests, ability levels, and learning styles that the group of students is new to you, you can make a point of asking them, individually or in a group, about their interests and academic strengths. Depending on the age of the children, they may also be able to write about this, or answer some form of questionnaire about their hobbies, interests, previous instruction, strengths, and weaknesses. Students generally enjoy talking about themselves and having their teacher get to know them well, as it makes them feel special, as well as directing you in choosing your teaching methods. Once you have assessed your students, you need to plan for different teaching methods. Direct instruction is the most common form of instruction. This is the lecturing method of teaching. Many teachers use this teaching method almost exclusively, as it is considered the simplest, and you can cover large amounts of material in a short period of time. However, this is not the most effective teaching method to reach all students, especially younger ones, who often need a more engaging, hands-on strategy in order to learn effectively. In addition, it is hard for teachers to tailor instruction to students at different levels. Facts and concepts may also need to be grouped or organized in order to facilitate better understanding. Teachers can use various teaching methods to help students with memorization, or they can use graphic organizers, mind maps, story webs, or other ways to represent information visually. There are many, many more teaching methods, but these are the most common. If the teacher finds the best teaching method for a particular group of students, the students are likely to learn more quickly and be more engaged. In addition, using a variety of teaching methods will keep children from being bored, and help them encounter the information in new and exciting ways. 8 SEPTEMBER 1-7, 2014 TEACHING AS AN ART AND PROFESSION ANALYZING THE ROLE OF COACH AND SCOUT IN SPORTS DEVELOPMENT MA. SOLEDAD T. MIRANDA Teacher iiI Guimba West Central School Guimba West District, Nueva Ecija WINSTON J. MARANA Teacher III Constancio Padilla National High School San Jose City, Nueva Ecija Teaching is to develop further skills of students through thinking, speaking, and writing tasks and through the ideas and concepts in reading and listening selections. Time and again, the Department of Education (DepEd) emphasizes the return of our schools to the development of the fundamental tools of learning-the 3R’s (reading, riting and rithmetic). Once a student has acquired the basic tools in learning, he is expected to be on his own. In the lingo of educators, these skills are basic to his becoming a functionally literate person, one who functions effectively and can adapt himself well in this everchanging world. Among the sociologists, they may likely view acquisition of learning skills as indispensable to making the young people become acceptable members of society. Teaching is a highly complex information processing activity that might be described as an orchestration of skills. Such skills may consist of both intellectual and manipulative which are needed to be developed among students. Teaching as inherently human activity involves emotions, which cannot be systematically appraised and employed, and human values, which are quite outside the grasp of science. Teaching is not like inducing a chemical reaction: it is more like painting a picture or making a piece of music, or in lower level, like planting a garden or writing a friendly letter. Thus a pupil is never regarded as a robot subjected to mechanical routinary activities. He should not be expected to react and behave in a predetermined mold. Instead, he should be treated with utmost care replete with human compassion and consideration. Following the same line of thinking, teaching as a unique, professional, rational and humane activity where one creativity and imaginatively uses himself and his knowledge to promote the learning and welfare of others. In order that teaching may become humane, the teacher must be creative and imaginative. As such, it presupposes teaching as an art in which the teacher is artist and the learner, an end-product of his own creation. So, whatever the learner has become is what his teacher made him to be. Teaching is an activity aimed at the achievement of learning and practiced in such manner as to respect the students’ intellectual integrity and capacity for independent judgment. The central element characterizing teaching is intelligence or the higher thinking powers associated with reason and understanding. Teaching then involves giving reasons, showing and weighing evidence, acting according to principles, drawing conclusions on relevant evidence, and justifying actions. The activities allied with teaching can be divided into two groups: Those that deal with thinking and those that deal with performing. As a humane activity, 1eaching is extending a professional assistance to students. It helps people to gain the knowledge and attitudes they need to be responsible citizens, to earn a living, and to lead a useful, rewarding life. It also provides the means of passing knowledge on to the next generation. The role of coaches and scouts in the development of an athlete is crucial in the performance of a team. They should perfect a symbiotic rhythm or partnership to be able to achieve their goal. Coaches and scouts analyze the strengths and weaknesses of individual athletes and opposing teams. In looking for a potential recruit, the role of a scout is another factor, a tandem that is necessary to compliment one another. Coaches teach amateur and professional athletes the skills they need to succeed at their sport. Scouts look for new players, evaluating athletes’ strengths and weaknesses as possible recruits. Many coaches also scout out new talent. Regularly, a coach plan, organize and conduct practice sessions to analyze the strength and weaknesses of individual athletes, including opposing teams. He provide encouragement and motivation to each team members, develop strategies and assess who among the players will execute a plan at any given time. More importantly, a coach direct physical conditioning program that enable athletes to attain maximum performance. On the other hand, a scout usually attend games, review video tapes of games to assess individual athlete’s performance to determine their potential. He may confer with a player’s coach about a player’s attitude and other related information as a player. Finally, he then report to a team coach, manager, team owner for which he is scouting and arrange possible incentives to prospective players. Basically, the coach teaches professional and amateur athletes the fundamental skills of individual and team sports. They hold training and practice sessions to improve the athletes’ form, technique, skills, and stamina. Along with refining athletes’ individual skills, coaches also are responsible for instilling in their players the importance of good sportsmanship, a competitive spirit, and teamwork. Many coaches evaluate their opponents to determine game strategies and to establish specific plays to practice. During competition, coaches may call specific plays intended to surprise or overpower the opponent, and they may substitute players for optimum team chemistry and success. Many high school coaches are primarily teachers of academic subjects who supplement their income by coaching part time. Coaches who work with athletes in individual sports are often called sports instructors rather than coaches. Sports instructors teach professional and nonprofessional athletes individually. They instruct and train athletes in sports such as bowling, tennis, and golf. Because of the diversity of individual sports, instructors usually specialize in a single activity, such as weightlifting, scuba diving, or karate. Like coaches, sports instructors also hold daily practice sessions, assign specific drills, correct athletes’ techniques, and devise a competitive game strategy. Coaches and sports instructors sometimes differ in their approaches to athletes because of the focus of their work. For example, coaches manage the team during a game to optimize its chance for victory, while sports instructors often are not permitted to instruct their athletes during competition. Sports instructors spend more of their time with athletes working one-on-one, which permits them to design customized training programs for each individual.
