WELCOME TO THE FIFTH ANNUAL DC ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL Since our first festival in 2000, Asian Pacific American (APA) filmmakers have grown dramatically in visibility and significance. Five years ago, we could not have predicted that a film like Better Luck Tomorrow would take the independent film world by storm. Nor could we have foreseen that a film starring two Asian American leads, such as Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle, would go on to major box office success. Asian Pacific American Film is dedicated to developing new APA talent in filmmaking and has been involved with the ABC Talent Development Scholarship Program for the last three years. Each year, APA Film conducts a screenwriting contest and selects two finalists to compete for one of ten $20,000 ABC scholarship grants. For the second time in three years one of our finalists, Franklin jin Rho, was awarded one of these ABC grants. are pleased to sponsor the 2004 DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. A hotshot mainland surfer’s encounter with surf legend Duke Kahanamoku leads him to a greater understanding of his sport and the power of the Hawai’ian spirit. Our festival concludes with The Magical Life Of Long Tack Sam, Ann Marie Fleming’s brilliant feature documentary about her great-grandfather, a little known but highly influential magician and acrobat from the early 1900s. The DC APA Film Festival would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our all-volunteer festival staff or the generosity of our sponsors and partners. We would like to thank them all from the bottom of our hearts. But most importantly, we thank you, the film enthusiasts and festival patrons, for your support. Enjoy the festival! O RG | W E LCO M E | 1| Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program, Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and National Museum of American History This year, our festival will present the works of over 60 talented filmmakers who fill us with hope that the next five years will bring even more progress. We open our festival with Take Out, a bold and hard-hitting feature film that embodies the very essence of independent filmmaking. Other films such as Jinoh Park's awardwinning short, Request, and Nobu Adilman's witty neo-noir film, Prix Fixe exemplify two distinctly different ways APA filmmakers have pushed the boundaries that once restricted the APA film genre. To receive a comprehensive overview of the exciting state of APA filmmaking, we strongly encourage you to attend our shorts programs to experience these and other exceptional films. DC ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL| As part of our mission to promote APA film, we have built relationships with major organizations that support APA media and the arts, such as the National Asian American Telecommunications Association, San Diego Asian Film Foundation, Asian Cinevision, Visual Communications, the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media, and the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. Our staff members travel to these film festivals, often at their own expense, to find the most exciting, challenging, provocative and engaging films being produced by Asian Pacific Americans. We have also promoted APA film in conjunction with other forms of APA media, by holding events such as screening director Nobu Adilman's films in conjunction with the Asians in Rock tour in August. 2004 APA FILM FESTIVAL STAFF Institutional Thanks: AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center, Arlington Independent Media, Asian Pacific Islander Queer Sisters, Asian & Pacific Islander Queers United for Action, Asian Cinevision, Asian Fortune, Avalon Theater, Better Impressions, Café Asia, Foundation for Asian American Independent Media, Georgetown University, Hawaii International Film Festival, Khush DC—South Asian Queers, Lincoln Theater, National Asian American Telecommunications Association, Northwest Asian American Film Festival, Organization of Chinese Americans, One in Ten, Reel Affirmations, Rosslyn Spectrum, San Diego Asian Film Foundation, SILVERDOCS, Swiss Embassy, Third I South Asian Independent Film, Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival, Velvet Lounge, Visual Communications, Washington City Paper, Washington Post, Washington Jewish Film Festival. He has exactly one day to come up with the money they demand. As a takeout delivery man for a local Chinese carryout, Ming’s only source of income is the tips he collects from customers. After a sympathetic co-worker willingly gives up his own rounds, Ming diligently hits the streets to make his deliveries, all the while facing the wrath of impatient customers and their condescending remarks about his limited English. A gripping film shot with handheld camera in a real-life Chinese carryout, Take Out is cinema verité at its finest. Directors Sean Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou capture the reality of the immigrant experience, revealing how a city can bare its fangs at the uninitiated newcomer. The film is a gritty, unsympathetic portrayal of a day in the life of an immigrant who discovers the underbelly of a new country. Take Out ’s stark depiction of everyday human emotions borders on something close to profundity, revealing that sometimes the smallest human favor can get us through the day. Take Out contains a strong cast of supporting characters, including an easygoing co-worker, a tough as nails restaurant matron, and a kaleidoscope of customers who represent the diversity of the city. The film accurately portrays the frenetic pace of a Chinese carryout as well as the human stories behind the scenes. Exploring our often careless attitudes towards the immigrant workers who serve us, this is a survival tale about the clashing of immigrant aspirations with the unforgiving mean streets of the city. | Suevon Lee |OC T 7 | OPE NING NIGHT |W W W. As the characters in these films find themselves faced with feats of strength in intellect, confidence, and selfrespect, they rise to the challenge, proving that in life, love, or basketball, it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. From the director of Chutney Popcorn comes this charming story of discovering friendship and romance…through modern-day courtship. Gopal (Roshan Seth) finds himself suddenly on his own in his suburban household after his wife leaves him to follow a guru in India and his daughter takes off with her German boyfriend. Faced with the depressing stillness of an empty home, Gopal turns to watching the classic Indian Bollywood films of his youth and reading Cosmopolitan magazines his daughter left behind for advice on how to navigate the choppy waters of love and relationships. Gopal takes to heart these classic and modern advice tips as he pursues his neighbor, a free-spirited, eccentric divorcée. As their relationship deepens, Gopal must confront the painful demons of his past as he explores the possibilities awaiting him in the present and future. This is a lighthearted film that tugs on our modern heartstrings and entertains with lively song and dance numbers, Bollywood style. | Suevon Lee F E S T I VA L H I S TO RY 2004 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival 2004 South by Southwest Film Festival |OC T 8 |W W W. This video explores the nostalgia the Lee family has for their fortune cookie factory and the meaning the factory has in their lives. |18 The Asahi Tigers, a Japanese Canadian baseball team from pre-World War II Vancouver, was the underdog in a league full of taller, stronger Caucasian teams. Skill, speed and precision, however, were on their side as they brought home five consecutive Pacific Northwest Championships and won the devotion of their Little Tokyo community. The bombing of Pearl Harbor found this celebrated team suddenly immersed in the world of racial discrimination and internment camps during this pivotal, unforgiving moment in history. Combining archival footage, recreations and interviews with the few remaining members of the team, this inspiring documentary sheds light on the near-forgotten story of the Asahi Tigers. It is a fascinating tale about a team and individuals who overcame racial barriers through their passion for the game of baseball. | Suevon Lee H O W TO M A K E K I M C H I A C C O R D I N G TO M Y K U N U M M A 2002, 18 min., Video | Directed by Samuel Kiehoon Lee Samuel Kiehoon Lee interviews his aunt on the art of making kimchi. The narration is supported by past (VHS, 8 mm, historical stills), present (16 mm) and recreated (Super 8) images that are woven together, creating a rich, densely layered reflective collage. Sackler Gallery | Meyer Auditorium Jefferson Drive at 12th Street, SW 202-633-4880 | www.asia.si.edu Acrobat, magician, vaudevillian and restauranteur, Long Tack Sam could only be described as an international superstar in his time. Strikingly handsome, with a magnetic personality, he was an early pioneer who broke many Western stereotypes about the Chinese, long before Bruce Lee. Friends with Charlie Chaplin and Orson Welles, and peers with many other performers of the day, his story was almost completely lost—even within his own family. In this unconventional documentary, filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming incorporates archival footage, photographs, comics and period music to evoke a time and place long ago. Rather than rely on the staid documentary techniques of voice-over narration and still images, Fleming decides to have fun with this film. An animator by training, she uses her experience to bring photographs and comic books to life. This film is also the story of a personal journey of discovery. Ann Marie Fleming is Long Tack Sam’s great-granddaughter, yet few in her family ever spoke of him. The secrecy and mystery surrounding this man motivated her four-year quest to document his life in this film. This search takes her from North America to Europe to China and back. Along the way, she interviews family, friends, magicians and acrobats for their perspectives. Not everyone agrees and mysteries still remain, yet the film creates a fascinating, multi-faceted portrait of a man and his times. | Tad Doyle REQUEST 2002, 12 min., 35mm | Directed by Jinoh Park A precocious eight-year-old boy makes a most unusual request. 2002 Cannes Film Festival 2003 Sundance Film Festival BLUE SKIES 2002, 7 min., 35 mm | Directed by Ann Marie Fleming A distraught singer overcomes his grief through song in this poetic and moving response to the events of September 11.
