THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 PM and
anytime upon reasonable request.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
First and third Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the
parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first
Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and
responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the
Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation.
THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements
should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding
to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning
(NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact
the parish office to begin the process.
PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK
If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a
prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age,
call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation,
communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning
at 9:00 AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass
each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good
Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be
of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic
patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish.
PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night
for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on
Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are
encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet
prayer with the Lord.
WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes
you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so
that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may
register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly
notify us of any change of address.
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in
Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s
transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are
thankful for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our
parish community and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

CALLED TO THE WATERS OF BAPTISM Last Saturday, DAVID
MICHAEL MARZELLA was presented at our baptismal font and
became a child of God and a new member of our parish. We
offer a warm welcome to him and congratulations to his parents
and family.
NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED Stop in and visit Jesus at the
adoration chapel which is always open.
CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA and HOME MISSIONS Next Sunday
there will be a second offering will be collected for the Church
in Latin American and the Mission Church in the U.S. In their own
way, each faces tremendous obstacles: poverty, injustice and
violence. As they struggle to meet everyday needs, our help
enables them to train church leaders there. There are
envelopes in your contribution packet, and additional ones are
at the narthex, but there will only be one collection which will
be combined and sent to the chancery office. Please be
thoughtful in next Sunday’s special offerings which can be taken
from the second 5% of your tithe.
If you have arranged an intention for Mass, consider presenting the gifts of bread
and wine during that celebration and kindly inform the usher.
FAMILY ROSARY Every last Sunday of the month at 6:30 PM in the church for the past ten years, families from our
parish gather to recite the glorious mysteries of the rosary for the many intentions that have been recommended
to us. Refreshments are served afterwards. Won’t you join us this evening? For more information, call Michele
Agosto (786-3128).
FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH on August 5. The nine consecutive first Fridays (with prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus) were
requested in personal revelation to our Lord reported by Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque. The five consecutive first Saturdays (with
penance and recitation of five decades of the Rosary) go back to the children of Fatima (1917) promising intercession for final
perseverance to those offering reparation to Christ through the Immaculate Heart. Why not set some time aside and visit the Perpetual
Eucharistic Adoration Chapel this week?

ASSUMPTION DAY On August 15, Catholic
people celebrate the assumption of the
Blessed Mother into heaven. Most years it is
a holy day of obligation when we should
come to Mass to celebrate together. But
when it falls on Saturday or Monday, the
obligation is removed. Nevertheless, we
invite everyone who wants to come to be with us at 9 o’clock.
Give honor to Our Lady by coming to Mass that day.
OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD
e are at the midpoint of our summer vacation and
the work around the parish campus is continuing as
scheduled. Maintenance projects in the church,
school, rectory and outside are keeping everyone
busy. As we get closer to finalizing the replacement of the
gym roof, I will write in more detail about our
Renew+Rebuild campaign and its projects just to keep all of
you up to date. Believe it or not, renovating areas of the
school building reminds me of the important mission we
share in providing Catholic education to our children. It is
really a family affair even though we have just completed our
third year as a regional school. It demands the attention of
mothers and fathers as an essential part of the process. They
are, as the Church has always taught, the first teachers of
their children, especially in the ways of faith. Therefore, both
by example and by instruction, mothers and fathers must
pass on the great treasure of our Catholic faith to their
children, together with the warmth and joy that they
themselves should feel in the Lord. The role of the Catholic
regional school and the parish religious education program
is to help parents accomplish this vital task. I believe that
one of the greatest gifts you can give your children is to send
them to a Catholic school. I realize how difficult that can be
financially, as we continue to work for elementary justice
from our governments, making it economically possible for
Catholic fathers and mothers to exercise their right to send
their children to a non-public school. I believe it is worth the
effort. We hope that the regional board will continue to do
its best to keep rising costs from making Catholic education
too difficult for our working class families to afford.
I sometimes think back to my early days in parochial
school at Saint Anthony parish in the Northeast Bronx. That
was the first time I really met a nun. Of course, I had seen
sisters in church sometimes when my parents would bring
me to Mass, and I always marveled at their composure, their
deep attention and their obvious prayerfulness. When I met
Sister Marion Louise in kindergarten in 1955, I was at first
awed by her and a little terrified. She was probably terrified
too, since she was very young and there were 58 of us in that
one classroom! Most of my grammar school teachers were
Dominican Sisters. They all lived in a small convent at the
corner of the street and walked together, almost in
procession, every school day, rain, snow or shine, about 15
minutes before school started. Some of them were very
strict – and feared by us little kids – but most of them were
extraordinary women who loved us and taught us patiently
and truly touched our lives. I thank God for the Sisters in our
Archdiocese of New York and for the dedicated Catholic lay
teachers who are partners with them. We would be lost
without them.
EMBER DAY FOR PEACE For centuries, the Church kept three
days (Wednesday, Friday and Saturday) near the beginning of
each season as a time of special penance. Such ember days
echo the meaning and observance of Lent. Local churches and
households may wish to observe these days of fasting, works
of charity and prayers. August 6 and 9 are the anniversaries of
the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fasting and
prayers would be a way to express the sorrow of nuclear war
and to ponder the possibility of making a peaceful world.
PARISH OFFICE SUMMER HOURS Beginning
this week, the parish office will be open to
serve you on Monday through Thursday from
9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and on Friday from 9:00

At other times, there will be the opportunity to leave a
message in the voice mailbox which is frequently monitored.
All phone calls will be returned in a timely manner. Regular
office hours resume on Tuesday, September 6.

ENCOURAGE is a Catholic apostolate for those who have family members with same sex attraction. A new website has been created
to help the faithful who are searching for information about Encourage and spiritual support. Visit www.encourageny.com
ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC AT BOWLINE POINT TOWN PARK will be held on Sunday, September 18 from 2:00 PM to
dusk. Everyone is invited to participate, especially our many families. All day barbecue of burgers, dogs, sausage
and peppers, salads. 50/50 raffle with multiple cash prizes. Sunday Mass will be offered at 5:30 PM in the pavilion.
Guaranteed to have a wonderful time. Registration will begin on August 21 in the narthex after Mass and any
weekday at the parish office.
PARISH GYMNASIUM Each year at this time, to prepare for the coming season, the floor of the parish gym is refinished. During these
final weeks of summer, the gym will be unavailable for use from August 8 through September 7.
THE CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES for 2016-2017 is due at the parish office tomorrow. If you ordinarily request the use
of the narthex to feature activities like raffles, dances, trips or items for sale, please include these dates as well.
MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES Sometimes, people look for way to remember their loved ones, especially those who have died. You
might be interested in memorializing them in a tangible way with the donation of a vestment, a new Roman Missal for use at Mass
or the new revised rite of marriage (Order of Celebrating Matrimony). You may inquire at the parish office.
PRAYER SHAWL APOSTOLATE of St. Gregory Barbarigo offers a warm, soft, hand-knit or crocheted shawl or lap
blanket to those who are sick in body or in spirit. Made by members and friends of the parish, the shawls are
a way of surrounding the recipient with prayer and the loving care of their parish family. In addition to the
prayers that are said when the shawls are started and finished, all shawls will be accompanied by a loving
message and will be blessed by Father before being given away. They are available for parishioners who are
ill or too infirm to come to church. They may also be requested for sick relatives or friends. You may call the
parish office (947-1873) for more information. We are also in need of donated skeins of yarn (eight ounce bundles, four ply) of cream
champagne or pastel so that the blankets and shawls will be uniform. If you can, please leave them on the table in the narthex with our thanks.
RACHEL MINISTRY at 7:00 PM every third Monday at the Marian Shrine. Call Betty Golemba at 271-3344 if you have any questions.
We provide help to those who have lost a baby at birth or prior to birth. Free and confidential. Dates are August 15, September 19,
October 17, November 15 and December 19.
PARISH PRAYER NETWORK is ready to pray from home, quietly at the adoration chapel, or at one of the prayer groups
for the urgent needs of those who call upon them for help in times of difficulty. When faced with a crisis situation,
people need as many prayers as possible. Call Cheryl at 429-4223 or e-mail [email protected]. “If there is
something that I can do for another person, then Lord, let me do it now and not defer it; for I shall not pass this way again.”
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS? Please invite him or her to come to church
with you on Sunday. It might spark their interest in joining the RCIA – RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS. For more information,
please speak with Father after Mass or call the parish office.
LAUNDRY HELP WANTED The altar server albs are in need of washing and we are calling for help from those who
might take home a few to launder. Pick them up after 12:00 Mass on Sunday and return them for the next weekend.
Thank you for keeping our altar servers looking sharp.
FALL BLOOD DRIVE conducted by NEW YORK BLOOD SERVICES will be held on Thursday, September 22 from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the
school gym. Blood donations save lives. The life you save may be your own. The demand for blood is high. That means we have to
get involved. You never know who will be in need of blood, or when the need may arise. It takes a special person who understands
that making a blood donation is a life saving deed. Many in our own community need blood transfusions every day. Donating blood
is safe, quick and easy to do. With questions about donating, please call the parish office.

BEQUEST TO YOUR PARISH Sometimes we read in the Journal-News obituary listings the invitation, “In lieu of flowers, donations can
be made to . . . .” If you are a parishioner of St. Gregory Barbarigo and this parish means a lot to you, why not include us in your
funeral arrangements? Thank you for your consideration.
REGISTER FOR FLOCKNOTE MESSAGES FROM FATHER Send the text SGB to the five-digit number 84576 or visit
the website www.flocknote.com/sgb and connect with us.
“CONSIDER YOURSELF AT HOME; CONSIDER YOURSELF ONE OF THE FAMILY” We are happy to offer a warm welcome to the newly
registered members of our parish family: TIMOTHY DUFFY, KRISTIN AND MCKENNA LARRISON; JOSE, SHILPA, AND SHANE JAMES; THOMAS AND THRESIAMMA
JOHN; VYNE, KATARZYNA, DEREK, AND PATRICK JOHNSON; GERARD AND ANNE LHERISSON; NNAMDI, CHIDINMA, CHIDERA, CHIDUBEM, AND CHINEMELUM MADUEKWE;
DOROTHY MAGRINO; PAUL, MELISSA, BRANDEN, AND ADRIANA MARTUCCI; MAUREEN MASTROPOLO; JEEVAN MATHEW; BLANCA MEJIA; PHILIP, LAURA, GRACE AND
PHILIP MONTEMARANO; STEVEN, BIANCA AND SOPHIA MORAN; MICHAEL, DANIELLE, EMILY, AND MICHAEL MURPHY; ANNA NESNADNY; JOSEPH AND MARY NESNADNY.
HERE’S A REMINDER We wouldn’t think of asking you to walk around during July and August with a string on your
finger to remind you to use your weekly envelopes. We are thinking that since bills come due all year round, please
use your envelopes regularly during the summer. If you miss a Sunday or two while away on a well-deserved
vacation, please make it up. One of the advantages of P ARISHP AY is that your donations to the church can be
automatically deducted from your checking or savings account. Call the parish office for more information on this.
PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN To ensure that our children remain safe and secure, anyone who needs to report an alleged incident
of sexual abuse of a minor by the priest, deacon, religious or lay person serving in the archdiocese is asked to contact Sister Eileen
Clifford (212-371-1011, x2949) or Deacon George J. Coppola (917-861-1762). Both may also be reached at [email protected].
Visit www.archny.org. This website also has valuable information on the Archdiocesan SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM as well as tips for
parents. In keeping with the archdiocesan policy regarding sexual abuse, we provide this information to assure that all, especially
our children, are safe and secure.
