Friends in East Aurora find a home
Six friends had a dream come true with some determination
and help from their parents. One of People Inc.'s newest group
homes opened this past winter on Paine Street in East Aurora.
This particular People Inc. group home was established due to
a group of parent's efforts in fulfilling their children's wish. The
six individuals who reside at Paine Street are all childhood
friends who wanted to live together one day. Spearheaded by
one of the mothers, Sue Lanigan, the group of parents
lobbied with elected officials and community businesses to
make this dream a reality.
“Years ago, there was a parent group called Challenger League
that planned year-round activities for the kids,” said Sue.
The group made sure “they had activities, socialization, and
friends outside the school system. It seemed increasingly
more important to us that the kids stay together,” Sue happily
remarked.
The start of the Paine Street group home was made with a
phone call from the leader of the Challenger League to Program
Director Concetta Ferguson. The parents and Concetta first
met on May 24, 2001 and then continued to meet to discuss
options and eventually the planning process for Paine Street.
Sue commented that Concetta reassured the fellow parents
with saying, “it will happen!”
The residents, ranging in ages 22 to 28 with developmental
disabilities, grew up in the East Aurora neighborhood and have
developed lasting friendships. They held a house warming for
families, elected officials, community members, and neighbors
to share their stories and welcome guests into their new home.
The new residents of Paine Street welcome visitors to their home. Top row - left to
right: Katie Lanigan, Brian Edmonds, and Jeff Vance. Bottom row - left to right: Jillian
Burger, Kirsten Weisberg, and Michelle Napierala.
The Paine Street residents have a very active lifestyle from
attending People Inc.'s Young Adult Life Transitions program
at Erie Community College South Campus to working or
completing internships, and a full schedule of sports and social
activities.
Not only are parents happy, but the kids are thrilled to be settled
into their new home. “I love this house because I like to be with
my friends and I like being on my own,” said Michelle
Napierala. “I just got a job at Subway in East Aurora and I can
walk to work in seven minutes!”
Just another way People Inc. succeeds in meeting the needs for families in the community.

If you haven't visited the Museum of
disABILITY History, now is the time to
plan a visit. The Museum has a new look with
fresh exhibits. One of the exhibits explores the
history of almshouses in America. Another,
which explores disabilities and pop-culture,
includes popular toys, well-known celebrities
and sports figures and a variety of popular
items used for fundraising.
Besides its entirely new look, which includes
a new sign on the front lawn to help
people find the Museum, there are some
exciting new projects underway for 2006.

The Museum of disABILITY History recently acquired a unique artifact
from disability history; a 1960’s Invacar. Established in 1948 by Oscar
Greeves, this three-wheeled car was made specifically for people in wheelchairs. The Invacar was taken off the road in 2003.
Our new interactive website, with funding from B.Thomas Golisano Foundation, will debut in June,
showcasing new virtual exhibits on a multitude of topics, as well as bibliographies and other information

Development and partnerships provide key to success
Dear Friends,
Recently, I was driving with a few staff to Lancaster to see how progress was
coming along at a new group home we just opened. It was a routine trip,
something I’ve done many times over the past twenty-five years. Lately, these
drives have become different though; they are no longer direct routes back and
forth. On the way there, we saw three other program sites we have under
development. On the way back, we saw two more sites that recently opened
and another one under development.
It’s been a priority at People Inc. to meet the needs of families waiting for help. We’re
committed to developing additional services and working in nearly every neighborhood in
Western New York.We focus on quality when starting new programs and maintaining those standards when programs are up and running. The leadership of town officials and welcoming neighbors allow
us to make a huge difference in the lives of families.
Thank you for your support of our work.
Sincerely,
James M. Boles, Ed.D.
President and Chief Executive Officer
People Inc. Mission
People Inc. exists so that
individuals with disabling
conditions or other special
needs have the support they
need to participate and succeed
in an accepting society.
Dear Friends,
Part of what makes People Inc. special is the agency's commitment to helping other
human service organizations.Through the years, People Inc. has provided technical
assistance through staff training, quality assurance reviews, loaned policies and
procedures, management help and grant-writing assistance to smaller nonprofits.
As a result, services remained in the community, quality was enhanced, agencies
gained more stability, and important services continued for many individuals and
families.
Today, People Inc. continues to work in collaboration with many human services
organizations, such as Hispanics United of Buffalo, Neighborhood Information Center
on the East side of Buffalo, and Headway for the Brain-Injured. As we plan for the future,
we invite you to join our commitment to ensuring that individuals and families continue to have
options for services they need, in a way that is accessible to them.
In your service,
Georgiana Jungels

A place to call home
Celebrating 35 years
of quality services
When Christine Long’s young daughter,
Kelly DeFedericis, began to show severe
behavioral issues, she knew that she must
do something. “It was getting to the point
that we couldn’t ensure her, or the
family’s safety,” said Christine. Luckily
she was directed to People Inc., where
a friend was once employed. People Inc.
had just the place for Kelly, a children’s

Zollars was developed as a result of four
children whose needs were more than their
families could provide. With the waiting list

who have been able to be part of Zollars are
grateful for the opportunity. Christine believes that placement at Zollars was the
best thing for her daughter. Kelly was hesitant to go; initially afraid that her parents
would abandon her or not love her anymore. This was far from the truth; this difficult decision was motivated by love. “Kelly has a life now, like any 14-year old,” says
Christine, “She has constant supervision, is safe, and has friends she can relate to.”
Since placement at Zollars, Christine and Kelly’s relationship has only improved.
“Chris is much more relaxed,” says Program Director Kimberly Kadziolka, “The
time they spend together now is quality time.” Christine is taking an active role in
Kelly’s case and has joined People Inc.’s Family Advisory Council whose mission is
to serve as advisors in the area of program development and to share perspectives
that help improve communications between agency staff and family members.
Christine continues to be pleased with People Inc.’s Zollars IRA
and says that she now knows how innovative People Inc. is.
“Kelly has a life
The most important opinion of all however is Kelly’s, and

she feels very positive about her new home saying she

can relate to.”
People Inc. is pleased to announce the agency's
35th anniversary will occur this August. We
are proud to provide quality services to over
10,000 individuals throughout the Western New
York community from birth to seniors, and all
stages in between. Offering a wide variety of
services has been the key to help people live
more independent and fulfilling lives. We would
like to thank our 2,000 employees, board of
directors, donors, families, and the individuals
we serve for their dedication and assistance
throughout the years.

As times have changed, so has People Inc. A
great example of People Inc.'s desire to meet
your needs is the enhancement of our Children's
Services. For example, we now offer residential
opportunities specifically for children and
young adults. As people are living longer,
healthier lives, People Inc. is happy to provide
safe, affordable Senior Housing to over 300
independent seniors. In fact, we are in the
process of developing our fourteenth senior
housing site, our first in Niagara County.
To help the community better understand the
umbrella of services the agency offers, People
Inc. will soon unveil a new logo and tagline. This
new look will provide a clearer understanding
of what People Inc. does. Plenty of community
outreach will also take place in the upcoming
months. Additionally, the website will be
completely renovated. We are excited about this
project and look forward to bringing it to you.
We will celebrate our 35th anniversary
throughout the year and welcome your input
and guidance the next 35 years! Thank you for
your ongoing support of People Inc.
Behavioral support program makes home visits!
The Intensive In-home Behavioral Support program is a unique
service available to individuals living in the community that
require specialized behavior support services provided within their
homes.
The program provides professional behavior specialists who
work with an individual on his or her particular behavioral needs.
The behavior specialists identify the challenges the family is
facing, formally assess behavioral needs, and develop intervention
plans to address them. The behavioral specialist works directly
with families and participants in their homes to teach more
effective strategies for addressing the identified needs. They
provide the families with information to help them better
understand their child and his/her disability. The goal of the
program is to allow individuals to remain in the community with
their families through this combination of training and support.

Early Intervention
Get your child on the right track
People Inc.'s dynamic Early Intervention Program offers a variety of
in-home therapeutic services to children birth to age three. Services
include occupational, physical, and speech therapies; special education,
infant massage, social work, and service coordination. People Inc.'s Early
Intervention Department has grown and we now have 12 specific Early
Intervention service coordinators with extensive backgrounds in working
with children and families.
All therapy services are provided
under contract with Erie
County's Early Intervention
Program at no cost
to the family. Once the
child is determined to
be eligible to receive
services due to a
diagnosed condition or
documented delay in development, the county secures those
services from People Inc.
Barbara Wakefield knew before her youngest daughter, Alison,

development. Early
Intervention coordinators also provide crisis intervention and coordinate
the provision of early intervention and other services that the infant or
toddler may need or is receiving.
In the Service Provision unit, the typical therapy session starts with the
parent and child meeting the therapist at the door. When the child spies
the “bag of goodies,” the fun begins! In reality, the therapist arrives with
his/her work tools, disguised as a variety of toys or playthings. These tools
are used to meet a variety of objectives including working on motor skills
or language development. The parents are a vital part of the Early
Intervention Program and the therapist gives the parent an assignment to
follow through on the goals addressed in the therapy session.

Providing care as a family
Join People Inc.’s
Family Advisory Council
People Inc.'s Family Care program offers a residential alternative to individuals who have developmental disabilities. The program allows individuals to benefit from a “family” environment
with less structure than a traditional residential
setting.
What do Family Care Providers do?
Family Care providers accept a person who has
a developmental disability into their home as part
of their family and their community. Providers help
plan and implement the individual's growth and
development by providing assistance or support with
activities of daily living and foster a sense of well
being by providing understanding, guidance, and
supervision. People Inc. provides service coordination, medical coordination, and 24-hour emergency
on-call service.
People Inc.'s Family Advisory Council is
looking for input from more parents and
family members.The Family Advisory
Council serves as advisors in the area of program development and shares participant
and family perspectives that help improve
communications between agency staff and
family members.
As a family care provider Cynthia Jarrett enjoys
spending time with her extended family. She opened
the doors to her home 12 years ago. Surrounding
her are Cynthia Clark, Delores Pluta, Pamela
Howard, and Elaine Monroe.
What do Family Care Providers say about the experience?
“Being a part of Family Care has been a wonderful experience. I feel as a Family Care
Provider, I am able to provide a family atmosphere to someone that may not have any family. We need more people to become a part of the Family Care family!” Alisha C.
“It's exciting to me to be a part of Family Care and I feel we should have more providers
and participants because it really makes you feel as though you are a part of a close-knit
family!” Cindy J.
“It has always been my dream to help people with developmental disabilities and the Family
Care program has made that dream come true! It has impacted my participants' lives a great
deal. They have become more independent, their appearances have changed, and their attitudes toward things have changed. My family and I embrace the participants and they
embrace us!” Patricia Z.
The Council has had input into a survey
about the daily routines of a person moving
into a residential setting and staff training to
include working with families. Members
formed a committee last year to assist with
the planning of the agency's Drive Fore
Disabilities Golf Tournament.They took the
lead on the auction committee and helped to
get donations from several community businesses. They once again will be lending their
support for this year's golf tournament to
solicit auction and basket raffle items.
The council meets regularly at the People

As someone living a generous life, there's a simple yet powerful way
to continue that path into the future - consider a bequest. Many
people who may not be able to make a major gift during their lifetime due to present financial obligations are able to make a wonderful gift through a thoughtful and well-planned will. Gifts
through your will are simple: they can be a particular item or percentage of your estate. They can be contingent (passing only to us
if another beneficiary passes away before you) or in trust, providing income to your spouse or children before passing for our organization's mission.Your bequest can be included in your will by
stating:
“I give $____ dollars (or described property) to the People Inc.
Foundation, 1219 North Forest Rd.,Williamsville NY, for their
exempt purposes.”
We understand that this is a delicate topic and our staff are happy

Special Partners, Special Projects - 2005 GRANT AWARDS
People Inc.’s Museum of disABILITY

set of investors. Examples of this are a
special legislative grant of $10,000 from
Senator Mary Lou Rath; $5,000
grant from the National Endowment
for the Humanities to conduct a
preservation assessment for our artifacts; a $3,990 grant from the NYS
Documentary Heritage Program to
conduct a regional documentation project; and two $500 grants from the
Upstate History Alliance to fund
planning activities.

Foundation made a generous grant of
$50,000 toward building our Downing
Family Respite Center, which
opened in mid-2005.
The NYS Homeless Housing and
Assistance Program awarded a grant

more accessible for people with disabilities. The NYS Department of
Health awarded $4,857 toward a
unique exercise program, for individuals
served with disabilities.
The NYS Housing Trust Fund
awarded People Inc. $200,000 through
the “Access to Home” program, which

modifications to individuals' homes in
the community.
People Inc. was awarded funding
through Niagara County to support a
“Disability Navigator” staff position,
working with employment programs in
that region. A $72,000 grant through
VESID will support continued efforts
to help people with special needs pursue
employment opportunities.
People Inc. was also awarded grant
funding toward making our workforce
the best it can be. A $13,000 grant

2006 Corporate Campaign
Gregory Stamm, Esq. and Ralph J.Vanner Jr. are leading the business community in supporting the
People Inc. Foundation 2006 Corporate Campaign. People Inc. never closes, it operates around-theclock, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, providing supportive homes for hundreds of people with disabilities. Over 10,000 local people are served every year through People Inc.’s full range of health and
social services. People Inc. is unique because its staff has the expertise to operate “specialty” homes.
The people that live in these homes are not only developmentally disabled, but have other special
needs. This year, the agency will develop additional homes for people with Prader Willi syndrome,
children with complex medical needs, and people with disabilities that were homeless, to name a
few. These unique answers come with a cost – there will be a shortfall not covered by any other
reimbursement source. Private donations are required to meet this gap.
Through the Corporate Campaign, business leaders can partner in creating “Special Homes for Special
People” – through a range of sponsorship and recognition options. Please consider a gift to the People
Inc. Foundation. For more information or to find out how you can get involved, contact Corporate Greg Stamm, Esq. co-chairs
People Inc.’s 2006 Corporate
Affairs and Foundation Director Denise Paszkiewicz at 716.817.7470.
