ADVISORY:
READING IS BEST FOR YOUR BRAIN, READ RESPONSIBLY
Here we go again,
Centralino.
Maybe
curiosity leads you to
read. More often than not,
when you grab a copy
of THE PHAROS, you
go to the Entertainment
page. But to your dismay
sometimes, there’s none
and are flooded with
literary articles. Then on
our last issue, maybe
you have noticed that two
names dominate most of
the articles which maybe
got you thinking it’s not
THE PHAROS anymore.
Now, The Pharos marks
its 86th years of existence.
For our first issue our theme CHALLENGE tests each and every
one of us. Like you, we have our own complexities. There have
been tests of leadership, understanding and time management.
But we are intertwined by our commitment, passion and
dedication that makes us a Powerful TEAM!
One of the tough experiments for us is to restore the
Entertainment Page, produce issues that promote student
enhancement and active participation in the University and
community. To reach out to YOU not because we want fame and
recognition but to continue the legacy of being your bridge to
the Administration. To speak out your sentiments and to light up
answers to your confused minds. We are only your bridge. So
appropriate action is up to you whether you complain relentlessly
on social media, inquire on the right medium, or to the right
people.
So what challenge is all about? Centralino, have you ridden
an LRT or MRT? As in Long Rail of Trials or Massive Rail of
Tribulation. Where are you headed to and why do you want to
go there? As students, we have multiple levels of plans in our
lives and we have tons of reasons and purpose. But, how long
can you hold on? If the people and the situation are dragging
you down? The route of your life is leading to the coward city
street of despondency? Where you can have a life where you
can easily get whatever you want in an instant. You don’t need
to undergo any obstacle that gives you pain and suffering. You
won’t even know the feeling of rejection and game over isn’t part
of the game.
In short, a life
with no adversity,
no downfall and no
affliction. But surely,
you also envision
the emptiness and
monotony of a selfmade world. But in
reality, from the day
we were born up to
the last breath of our
life, we are bound to
experience infinite
obstacles. But the
question is, can you
dare to fight a battle
that never ends?
Challenges are
all over. The moment
you wake up and say “Pasukan na naman!” and when you enter
the college saga. It welcomes you to a life that is full of twist
and turns that makes you live with uncertainties that test your
faith. There are also people who cultivate activities for our growth
and development but despite the problems, they remain resilient
because it’s just a test of leadership that made them leaders who
were born and made to serve.
Next is a test of courage to whom it may concern. May it
be someone who does battle in the arena of finding sense in
belonging or someone who has nowhere to go. All of us want to
reach success and this starts with a test of our will power. How
one’s downfall can lead to success. As students, we can’t help
but to complain when an issue emerges from nowhere and a
problem pertaining to our studies arises.
Challenges are like an organism that is abundant in
our environment. A bacterium that can either give us good or
bad effect. A lifetime examination that assess how strong our
commitment and principle in life. So Centralino, dare to break your
limits. Unravel your innermost strength. Dare to fight. Unleash
the hero in you, the Super You! Dare to dream. Overpower the
temptations that brings you down. Play your part. Do more, talk
less. If you feel like you are trapped in the middle and there’s no
ray of hope, just remember these:
Let your dreams be bigger than your own Goliath!
Let your commitment be tougher than your own adversity!
Let your courage suppress your downfall!
and Let your faith be tested by fate.

Zurbaran Hall
now open in MCU
By Michelle Ann L. Bernardo, Business and Technology
In keeping with the university’s drive to provide the best
amenities for students while learning, MCU inaugurated a
campus dormitory for students who need a place near the school
that they can call their second home, the Zurbaran Hall.
Why Zurbaran Hall? For those who do not know,
Zurbaran is a street in Sta. Cruz, Manila where the MCU built its
first building in 1915.
Zurbaran Hall is a 3-storey dormitory located at the Purple
Owl Complex which houses the dorm, the university canteen and
the Purple Owl Gymnasium. The facility is maintained and under
the supervision of the Department of Engineering, Maintenance
and General Services (DEMGS) Head, Engr. Melquiades V.
Pablo, Jr.
It has 47 air-conditioned rooms with accommodation of 2
and 4 in a room, which can billet up to 158 occupants, with boys
in the Ground Floor and the girls in the 2nd and 3rd Floors. Each
room comes with a double-deck beds, a cabinet and study table
for each tenant, a toilet and bath; and a wall fan. The dorm has
a 24/7 wi-fi access, a lobby furnished with 32-inch Cable TV, a
pantry and a common C.R. for each floor.
For students’ added security, the dorm is equipped with 24/7
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system. Student-tenants have
a curfew from 10:00 P.M. up to 5:00 A.M. Guests are allowed
at the main lobby up to 7:00 P.M. but these regulations may be
waived on a case-to-case basis with the proper permit.
Last June 9, the student tenants started moving-in and was
followed by the blessing of the dormitory led by Msgr. Ranie
Trillana last June 21.
Zurbaran Hall surprisingly, has very favourable occupancy
even on its first year of operation. For those who are interested,
you may visit Zurbaran Hall at the Purple Owl Complex and look
for Ms. Maria Victoria T. Clarin, the Dormitory Coordinator.

An All Out Battle
BRAG YOUR SWAG! The MCU Dance Troupe and
University Student Council held the much-anticipated dance
competition, Danscene to the Beat last March 7, 2014 at the
Centennial Gymnasium.
This year, the College of Pharmacy romped off as Grand
Champion with High School as 1st runner-up and Physical
Therapy as 2nd runner-up.
The competition was participated in by 10 groups from the
Colleges and High School department. The competition aims
to showcase the talents of Centralinos on hip-hop dance and
promote friendly competition among the students.
Danscene, now on its 2nd year, is a dance competition
among MCU students wherein each group, composed of 10 to
20 members, was given a maximum of 5 minutes to execute
their hip-hop moves and routines.
The event started with the parade of the participants
followed by an intermission number from the guest performer
Audience of 1 (AO1) Dance Crew. The MCU Dance Troupe
then showed their dancing prowess after which the MCU
Dentistry Pep Squad performed a cheer dance and stunts.
Before the announcement of winners, a representative
from each of the competing teams had their own spotlight as
they did a “Showdown” where they showed their swag on the
dance floor. The representative from the High School won the
face-off. The judges did their “sample” which made the crowd
go wild. Persian students also performed an intermission
number.
The guest judges were John Matthew Quiambao, Carlo de
Leon, Louise Torres, Lhaurence Villareal and Edzel Sabarillo.
All come from different dance crews.
The criteria for judging were synchronization 35%,
choreography 30%, costume and props 10%, audience impact
10% and votes 15%. Voting, which was held from March 3 to
5, was based on the school supplies that each group donated.

An inspirational message was
delivered by Dr. Efren P. Echaure from
the College of Optometry Batch 2013 who
ranked as 7th place in the December 2013
Optometrist Licensure Examination. Dr.
Echaure shared his humble beginnings
and the value of self-discipline, a receptive
mind and faith in God.
Prof. Benitez on her part delivered
the closing remarks. She emphasized
how blessed the scholars are and
reminded them to be a good role model to
everybody in the community.
The College of Dentistry launched its core values campaign
at the PGT Building last July 4, 2014. To start the campaign, the
Dentistry Student Council focused on the value Integrity.
The council officers and other dentistry student organizations
are working to uphold and spread among dentistry students
the values. The MCU Core values are Integrity, Collaboration,
Commitment, Circumspect and Adaptability.
Prof. Petrona A. Benitez, Vice President for Academic
Affairs in her remarks said integrity is difficult to pursue and
maintain. She said a person cannot simply claim that he has
integrity. It depends on how the said person is perceived by the
people around him and reacts to ‘testing’ situations.
Among those who attended the event were deans, faculty
members, the Junior Clinician Organization members, other
dentistry students and guests.

Bakit?
“Hindi lahat ng taong nakapagtapos ay nagtatagumpay at
hindi lahat ng nagtagumpay ay nakapagtapos.”
Nagtataka ka ba Centralino? Ang buhay ay parang isang
alamat kung saan may pinakaugat ang lahat ng kwento, ikaw ang
bida at kontrabida. Bakit?
Bakit pilit mong nilalabanan
At ano
At LAHAT
ng TAO may mga HAMON sa buhay. At sa BUHAY, may mga
hamon sa tao na damay ang LAHAT. Ikaw, may solusyon ka na ba
sa problema mo? Bilang mag-aaral, parang lifestyle na natin ang
maging reklamador.
mag-aaral.
Technological World simulan natin gumawa ng GOOD NEWS sa
sarili, komunidad natin.
Centralino, wala namang taong nagtagumpay ng hindi
pinagpawisan ang lahat. Kung meron man, nakamit nila ‘yun
sa madali pero maling paraan. Nag-uumpisa pa lang ang tunay
na laban. Oo, nakakatawa man isipin pero madami pa tayong
pagdadaanan.
pangarap at paghihirap nila.
puso at pananampalataya. Kaya ikaw, kung dumating man yung
Kumilos,
gumawa at maging wais ka din. Magsasara na ang ALAMAT ng
BAKIT. Hahayaan mo bang MALAMAT ang lahat?

QUOTES

Bring It On!
“Today doesn’t dictate your tomorrow.“
I can still remember when I planned to apply as staff
writer in The Pharos. Honestly, at first, I had second
thoughts if I really wanted to be part of an organization
since I haven’t joined one ever since. You read it right.
Not a single one.
I was a typical “bahay-eskwelahan” student. No
extra-curricular activities, no “gala”. Boring you must
say, but that was my life as a student until I joined The
Pharos.
There’s a saying, “You will never know until you
try.”Opportunity knocks only once. So if you have the
chance, grab it! When I saw the announcement that The
Pharos posted on Facebook for a screening for campus
journalist aspirants, there was this urge in me saying
that I must try it. “There’s no harm in trying,” I thought.
So, I attended the scheduled screening and gave my
best shot. I was able to pass the screening and to me,
the rest is history.
Who would have thought that an ordinary student
like me who haven’t joined any organization will be a
part of a school publication? Anyone could be a person
that we never imagined we could become. Today
doesn’t dictate your tomorrow. Some people may doubt
your abilities. Even say bad things behind your back. But
who cares? Prove them wrong. Let them swallow their
words. You can’t please everyone, that’s the truth. No
matter what you do or how hard you try to please them.
Anyway, you don’t need to please everybody. Just be
yourself and everything will fall into place.
“Nothing is impossible.” So, do not lose your ground.
Stay firm. “Success comes to those who wait.” But don’t
get me wrong! Don’t just wait. Work for it. Success
doesn’t come easy. There will be a lot of challenges
along the way. But these challenges will hone you to
become a better person. It complements a quote from
Confucius, “The gem cannot be polished without friction,
nor man perfected without trials.”
“Life is not a bed of roses,” they say. But for me, it is.
Why? Because roses have thorns, right? These thorns
only remind us that if we want a beautiful life, we must
accept the pain with it.
“We’re only human.” We are vulnerable to life’s
problems. There are moments when you want to break
down. If you are caught in this situation, remember that
there are seven billion people in the world. There are
people who have bigger problems than you do. “Count
your blessings, not your problems.” Somehow, you will
feel lighter.
Life and challenges are inseparable. Life is full of
challenges. Challenges make life more meaningful.
It goes with the saying that “Life is a battleground.”
Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. You may not
know when “the challenge” will hit you. More often than
not, it hits you when you are off-guard. It’s unpredictable.
But don’t let challenges ruin your life. Trials exist to make
us wiser and stronger. Always remember that “God won’t
give us problems that we can’t handle.” May it be small
or big problems, ask for His guidance and you will never
go wrong. Believe in yourself. Believe in God.
All of us face challenges in our own ways. But one
thing is for sure. With challenges, life is worth living. It
makes us realize our purpose in life. And that purpose
is to SURVIVE.

COLLEGE SAGA:
NOW PLAYING
By Cazandra Ave D. Escarez, Arts and Sciences
and Alexis S. Hacutina, Medical Technology
Over the years, the Manila Central University had developed
and produced many students into well-rounded professionals.
This legacy of the institution continues up to now.
Entering college is like a game. You have to be well-prepared
and in good condition. As a beginner, your strengths are your
experiences. Challenges, struggles and even failures may come
your way. But be brave! These are part of the game you entered.
Always remember: Never quit or surrender! Because if you do,
the game is over. A true gamer is always ready to win the battle
whatever it takes. So, as a new college student, you have to exert
your best effort and commit yourself to your studies for you to
clear each mission and to level up.
FRESHMEN: COLLEGE IS?
“College is a big challenge for me because I’ll be more
independent and my course is related to medicine. I think
that it will be really fun because I have new friends and great
professors, and I can join activities related to dancing because
I’ve got the moves. At the same time, my best friend will also
study here in MCU and I’m sure that if there’s available time,
the two of us will be together and that would help me adjust in
the new environment. To succeed, I’ll exert more time in studying
and be careful and wise in choosing friends.” — Jaztine Martinez,
Medical Technology
“College is not the same as High School. Now, I’ll be more
independent and focused on my studies to achieve my goals.
Gaining more knowledge and getting to a higher level of maturity
are some of my expectations. The problems like having strict
professors and bullying could be there. Using my skills in singing
and dancing in an organization are some things I can contribute.
College could be tough to survive so I have to make the right
decisions.” — Roseann Dador, Arts and Sciences
“Being a freshman, I feel excited for college life. I am ready
to face challenges and learn new things from my professors who
I hope to be lenient. I’m hoping also that my classmates are
friendly and accommodating. I will study well to be successful.”
— Paula Christina Ibe, Business and Technology
“To be honest, I’m not totally ready to go to college because
I think it’s hard for me to cope up with the new environment. But I
wish it’ll be fine soon. I hope that my professors are approachable
and not terrors. As to my classmates, I hope that they are easy
to get along with because I’m shy and afraid of being out of
place. College life is challenging for me because there are a
lot to memorize in the field of my studies. One thing that I can
contribute is my participation in some organizations.” — Hannah
Charilane Flores, Medical Technology
“College will give me more knowledge. Compared to High
School, college will be more challenging to especially on time
management and attending classes. I plan to be active in some
activities in school to have more friends. But somehow I’m afraid
because I think it’s going to be hard to get high grades. To my
professors, please be open-minded and teach us in a place where
we can study comfortably.” — Arlyn Mae Ramirez, Pharmacy
As a freshman, your game started when you entered college.
The people you’ll meet along the way will be your teammates that
will either help you towards victory or opponent that will challenge
your best. Problems will arise, you might feel helpless, and worse
you may fail but always take note that God is also there to give
you power ups anytime you need a helping hand. Just pray to
Him, believe in Him and keep your faith strong.
The time will come when all your efforts and sacrifices will
be rewarded and you may get extra bonuses. This is college.
Your door to your dreams and successful future. Be serious,
stay focused, know your priorities, set your limits, be inspired
in everything you do, and most of all keep on dreaming and
believing and you will end up MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Living With
Uncertainties
By Nataniel N. Laguitan, Medical Technology
Student life can be likened to a
person who has yet to set his life’s
direction as both suffer from uncertainties.
Every morning there is this thought that
maybe today a professor decides to give
a mind-blowing, out-of-the-topic exam
and the only question that the professor
will give that you may know is your full
name.
There are two types of students. They
are, a student who is always prepared with
his studies and with a healthy mind wakes
up in the morning thinking that today he
will ace all the quizzes and a student who
is always anxious, who hardly sleeps and
simply hopes to get by his lessons.
You readers must’ve encountered
these types of students. Are you a
studious and grade conscious student
or a happy-go lucky one? Then there’s
the natural genius. Students who claim
“I didn’t review” but still pass or even
surpassed everyone’s score.
However, no matter how hard you
study or how much of genius you are,
there will be times when you are hit hard
by questions in an exam. You may find
yourself asking, “Saang sementeryo ba
ito hinugot? Bakit hindi ko ito alam?”
The only thing that is certain is that
there is no such thing as being certain.
We must take it as an opportunity that we
do not see what lies ahead in the future.
Due to uncertainties, we do things beyond
our capabilities. To live with uncertainty
means to live outside our safe circle, to
manage risks and danger, and to take
challenges as opportunities. A person
living with uncertainties should look for
answers to his questions and solutions
to his problems. He must improve his
situation and hope to meet his satisfaction.
To hurdle uncertainties is people
must do. We must take risks with the
end in view of turning things around for
the better. So the next time life has a
challenge, overcome this because it could
be a better way to improve yourself.

A Test of Leadership:
BORN AND MADE TO SERVE
The Pharos is your medium to convey your
insights regarding school matters while student
leaders are those who represent their respective
colleges’ students and supervise most student
activities. What makes a leader a leader? According
to Trait Theories, “Leaders are born, not made” while
Behavioral Theories states that “Great leaders are
made, not born.”
Every one of us has our share of misfortunes
ZEDRIX VALDEZ

that shape us towards maturity. The defining
moment of leadership may come when there is
a falling out with a member. The key to resolve
torment is to tug your fundamental attributes that
will help you settle difficult circumstances.
We asked the student leaders on their insight
on related matters. They are here to lead and we
students to follow. Therefore, we should play our
part for the betterment of our college and University.
“Trials are inevitable because every person has an opinion. I’m catering to 4,500 students and dealing with 4,500
opinions. Trials have different types. It could be before the event, during the event or from the student body. So, I need
to decide on the best solution that will benefit the most number of people. In trials, we have to be ready and anticipate
these. The goal must remain intact. The best thing to do is to consult other officers on other options on actions to take
and what is the best for everyone. The final decision should be a win-win solution for the benefit of all and this must
not hurt the feelings of anyone. Being respectful, optimistic, and realistic. Even I’m the USC President, I can’t say that I
don’t have any flaws. If I will show weakness, the tendency is that the other leaders will lose their ground as well. If you
acknowledge your weaknesses, you can turn these into strengths.’’
“As a leader, it is a fact that great responsibility is on my shoulders. This agrees with the saying, ‘Great power
comes with great responsibility.’ True leadership is servant hood. First, to pray. Secondly, I make sure that I’m prepared.
Third, is to bear in mind that making a mistake is not a fearful thing to do. And last, to interlink, you must realize that
without them, the officers and the students, you have no value. Each one is necessary in working as a team, having
its own unique worth in the organization. Trials will give me a more profound insight on how to become a successful
leader. Through this, my capacity of understanding will become broader, encompassing the different aspects of life
which includes perseverance, patience, a God-fearing attitude, respect and collaboration”.

“I think trials are just way of testing someone’s ability on how one can survive and move forward. Trials should
not be feared but rather faced, with perseverance and determination. It will make us stronger if know how to deal and
learn from it. That can shape us to become a well-rounded leader, not just a leader but as well as a person. Confront
and be calm. I believe the best way to lead a misleading situation is to confront it in a nice and polite way, where you
can express yourself. At the same time, to notify and give advice to that inactive member without actually worsening
the situation. The attribute that I think I have is being industrious, brave, humorous and selfless.”
“Trials are just part of the long road that we travel through our leadership. We can never be perfect but we can
always be better. Trials will push us through to be responsible enough, to improve, to be better, and to achieve what
we are aiming for. One way is to communicate. Communicate to all those who are involved. We can never avoid
misunderstanding situations. All you can do is talk, clarify things and try to work out things. I follow instructions, give my
best, be positive and energetic are my fundamental attributes. Being energetic is the easiest way to influence others. If
you are full of life in a nice way, others will also do the same.”

“Trials add flavor to our lives. This is where we get our experiences and wisdom so that in the future, whatever
the learnings that you have, we can impart to our members. I would encourage and talk to them personally and try to
find out the reason why they are misled. Sheep wouldn’t get lost if they were not distracted. It is the shepherd’s job is
to leave the 99 others and find that 1 missing sheep and lead it back to the group. My fundamental attributes are being
optimistic, humble, a team player, and a man of faith. I’m the type of person who has a positive attitude in life. We must
be positive whatever obstacle that we undergo and when we achieve something good. We must be humble. We need
to ask help from our own team. I always make it to a point that whatever my decision will be, I always ask God and let
His will be done.“
“I consider trials not as a hurdle but rather an opportunity. It may delay me, slow down my progression to achieve
my goal but I make sure that trials will not stop me. I remember an old saying ‘Calm seas never made a skilful sailor.’
The weak may think that giant waves will sink them but a healthy mind will think that it is just another wave that needs
to pass. I do have a set of dedicated officers this year but if I ever have a misleading situation like having an inactive
member, I will make him feel that he is an important part for the betterment of our college. Just like any other officer.
Risk taker, initiative, front liner, morale booster are my fundamental attributes. I’m the one who does the ‘battle cry’ at
war. It is helpful to raise the fighting spirit of the soldiers in times of war. I want my officers to stay with our common goal
with inspiration, dedication and love for the College of Medical Technology and our University.”

“Trials will challenge us leaders to work harder so that we can meet the expectations of our followers or copharmacy students and to have the projects we want. I’m the kind of president that is shy. One who doesn’t command.
So I want them to do their jobs with initiative. I also want them to share their opinion or ideas for proposed projects. I
will lead them by keeping myself busy so they will know they need the initiative. So that we can have a faster progress
for our projects. My attributes are having favorable time management and being able to balance between social lives
and studies. It’s okay to be a leader and a student. We can explore the other life in college and help for the betterment
of our college. Of course, to be a registered Pharmacist, that is our common goal.”
“Trials and failures mold me to become stronger, more efficient, and patient. It gives me a better perspective and
makes me think of other strategies and consider options that would help my colleagues. Actually, we cannot avoid
inactive members, so as a president, you’re going to do some of their task in order for the other members not to suffer.
But it is much better if you can motivate or convince them to do their job. If not, I should make sure that all of the task
are distributed to active members so that it will be much easier to finish all the work. Patience, perseverance, trusting
and having faith in God are my attributes.”

“Trials come in different forms. As a leader, my biggest challenge would be managing my time and possible
miscalculations that may arise when there’s an event. Trials give pressure on my leadership and I’m not afraid of it
because pressure is what turns a lump of coal into a diamond. It will help me develop into a well-rounded leader. In
terms of leading inactive members, I must be flexible in this situation to cope with change. Inactive members must be
mobilized since they are in the position and expected to do their roles and responsibilities. Being curious, creative,
comfortable and and having faith in God. That will guide them take the right path. I believe that ‘It’s not okay not to be
perfect’’ for God is in molding us to the person we should be.”
“Trials are the best way to become a well-rounded leader. It can bring out my skills that can help me to overcome
situations and know the right way in solving problems. Trials can lead me and my co-officers to improve our knowledge
and skills in leading our college. A leader has so much trust, responsibilities and expectations. Being in this position is
not easy. We, leaders, experience failures and troubles due to situations that we encounter. When it comes, we must
face it optimistically. Having a positive outlook in life, being a jolly person, somehow strict, and having an open mind
are some of my essential attributes that my colleagues can learn from. With these characteristics, we can resolve
difficulties in a more positive and effective way. These can also help us to become better and responsible leaders.”

“For me, trial is like an examination wherein I, as a student leader, could apply all the knowledge that I have
learned from seminars and lectures that I have attended during my term. As an elected student council president, they
put their trust in me to handle different kinds of situations. That’s why, together with other student council officers, we
settle problems by meeting because we believe that there’s no problem that can’t be solved through communication.
I can say that having a sense of humor, being optimistic, flexible and open to changes are my fundamental attributes.
With these, we can face challenges easier. These characteristics will help us to be well-rounded, dynamic leaders for
the betterment of our colleges.”

To Whom
it May
Concern
By Marc L. Nepomuceno, Physical Therapy
To Whom It May Concern:
Do you feel that life is always out to get you? Do you
always see life as full of walls to overcome and complex
pathways to navigate? You may feel that there is always
someone wanting to see your downfall or guiding you to a
path full of trials and tribulations. You may even ask Life
itself, why is it being harsh to you and always giving you
unfortunate circumstances?
If you find yourself lost within this spiral of negativity and
lose your way, you can remember one thing: That this is the
true meaning of life. To quote, Sylvester Stallone as Rocky
Balboa, when he said to his son in a movie, “Let me tell you
something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine
and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t
care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and
keep you there permanently if you let it. You or nobody is
going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you
hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving
forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.
That’s how winning is done! Now, if you know what you’re
worth, then go out and get what you’re worth. But you
gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers
saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or
her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that isn’t you. You’re
better than that!”
The three lines that are emphasized shows some very
important lessons you may or may have not yet learned as
you continue your journey on this earth. The first one clearly
shows how life is like. The world really isn’t all sunshine and
rainbows. The world is not there to give you everything. Life
is a tough journey that is filled with rough roads, dark tunnels
to get through, and immense storms but after all the rough
roads there is a place filled with smooth paths, at the end of
the tunnel is a bright light to look up to in the darkness, and
after the storm ends the sun will shine again.
“But it is not about how hard you hit. It’s about
how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
How much you can take and keep moving forward.” The
second line is about overcoming the challenges that you will
eventually meet in life. The external and internal obstacles
you are facing right now and for those coming to you in the
near future. You need to endure all the pain you will face
because this will let you grow as a person. Despite how
much it hurts you have to follow through and keep pushing.
A diamond isn’t made from silk and cotton. A diamond is
formed when coal goes through heat and pressure. You may
look and feel as if you are a piece of coal today, but when
you keep reaching for your goals and dreams while resisting
the pain and pressure of the challenges this world gives you,
you will turn into a strong beautiful diamond both inside and
out.
“Now, if you know what you’re worth, then go out
and get your worth. But you got to be willing to take the
hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you
want to be because of him, or her, or anybody.” You only
have one thing to learn when you know what you want and
that is personal responsibility. This allows you to take control
of your life because simply you do not need to blame others
but yourself. You will have more coming into your life when
you recognize you could have done all you wanted to do if
you only just didn’t stop yourself or allow yourself to give up.
You’re a strong person deep inside. You can grab all the
opportunities that you can. You can get all the high grades
you want. You can create more out of life than ever before.
You can go and get it now. Don’t worry too much about all
the naysayers and the things you have to face, these will turn
into the foundation you need to be the person you always
want to be.
With all the best,
M.

UNSPOKEN: #DARETOCONFESS
By Alexis S. Hacutina, Medical Technology and Glaiza Tarin, Nursing
“Feelings that are hard to let go
are the real ones.”
As students, we have our own
personal life, haven’t we? We’re only
human who needs love. Anyone who’s at
the state of being in love is experiencing
a dilemma in terms of speaking out what
lies deep down in their hearts. It becomes
a challenge for them and almost all the
time, results to wasted opportunity and
regrets. They blame themselves for not
telling early and directly to the person they
like or love what they really feel. Though
you regret, it cannot change what you
have done. It will only worsen the present
situation.
The question is, why are people
having a hard time in expressing their
feelings? Simply because of these neverending reasons: shyness, having a notso-good physical appearance, peer
pressure, “torpe” (for the boys) and the
most painful rejection. These things had
ruled people’s mind that tend them to bury
their feelings instead of conveying it. No
matter what reasons you have, feelings
are meant to be told and once told, it must
be felt.
BOY’S REPLY:
Rejection and being “torpe” are
the reasons why guys keep on hiding
their feelings toward a girl. Some are
shy, afraid of rejection, lack self-esteem
but, come on guys! Be a man! Whatever
your excuses and alibis are, “Will it
make you less of a man if you do so?”
If you want to be happy, you have to
take the risk. You have to be true. Who
knows? She also has feelings for you and
waiting for your message. Remember, it
may be a good result or bad, it’s more
fulfilling once you release your emotion.
Yes, dude! It hurts to be rejected but it’s
more painful to regret that you weren’t
able to confess your love. As a guy, we
know you’re afraid of being heartbroken.
Friendship is over and painful rejection.
It’s disheartening for guys because they
treasure friendship. It’s the only way he
can show his love, even for that girl,
it’s just a friendship or brotherly love.
You don’t want to lose and destroy the
friendship that you have built and tested
through times. And now that FEAR must
come to an end. It’s NOW OR NEVER.
GIRL’S ANSWER:
For a girl, being shy and lack
of self-confidence are the reasons
why they can’t admit their feelings to
someone. Or maybe, she doesn’t know
where she stands. Is it just friendship,
mutual understanding (M.U.) or just a
complicated relationship that can’t be
labeled? “But will it make you less of
a woman if you do the first move?”
Honestly, let’s admit, it is because of our
norms and standards in society that it’s the
guy who should initiate the move which is
absolutely right. But on the other hand,
confession is only the gateway of opening
your emotions to someone. You just let
that person know your hidden love, but
it’s the two of you who will work it out. It’s
pretty hard because once you opened up
your feelings for him, it’s like you’re giving
him the option of remaining as friends or
taking it to a higher level? You don’t want
him to give you a cold treatment, do you?
And worse, avoid you like you don’t exist.
Remember that it’s better to TRY than to
CRY later just because both of you were
AFRAID. FACE YOUR FEARS.
DARE TO SAY THE MAGIC WORDS
Life is too short to be filled with
regrets. If you like or love someone, tell
him as soon as possible because if you
keep that, you might regret it in the future
and that will surely break you apart. Say
what you need to say. Say what you want
to say. Be honest. Be real. Those words
coming from the heart should not be left
unspoken. Dare to confess! You have
nothing to lose. After all, if they will take
you for granted, it’s their LOSS not yours!
Why? Isn’t it a foolish or childish for two
people to hide their feelings just because
they are afraid of the unknown? But
have you thought about the friendship
you had before all the things have been
said and done? How they helped you
during those difficult moments of your
life? Can you imagine life without them?
Now, is it worth your decision? DARE TO
CONFESS!

Being
Successful:
The Wheel of Will
By Shanice Z. Bebanio, Medical Technology
Editor’s Note: Most of the respondents’
answers were translated and edited.
God has given us the opportunity to take control and be the steward of
our own life.
Although He had it planned already, He wants us to decipher our purpose
here in this world. We often ask a lot of questions — Why are you here? What is
your purpose? What do you want to be? Will you be successful? Or will you end
up unsettled? The answer is in our hands. From the very moment that we entered
this world, our own future has already depended on us, and from that moment
challenges are already present.
For this article, we chose to highlight the story of a tricycle driver who
almost every day of his life, is struggling to earn a living like sidewalk vendors,
jeepney drivers and other laborers who inspired and motivated us to do our best
for a better future. We also asked students on what profound roles that they play
in our lives. In return, what can we contribute to them as a student, youth, in
terms of community involvement and health sector?
A Hard-earner with Life’s Lessons
“Huwag mo na ko pangalanan baka sumikat pa ako. I am a tricycle driver. I
have been doing this job for more than a decade. I stopped going to school when
I was second year in high school because I was blinded by the money I earned
as a tricycle driver. Yes, I started young. I was influenced by an uncle because
he can buy all the things he wants. It hurts to see my mother crying in front of
me trying to convince me to go back to school for I was their only hope since my
siblings already had their own families. During those days, I was contented by the
money I earned every day. I was satisfied because I was too young to think of all
the problems. Years later, I felt like I was no longer happy and that something’s
missing. I already have my own family and I needed to earn extra money for all
our needs – food, school supplies, and all the necessities. I realized it was not
enough since I have five children. It feels like my world falls apart every time they
ask for something and I cannot provide. One night, I reminisced and realized
the importance of education, so I had regrets. I had the chance but I let it pass. I
shouldn’t have wasted the opportunity. Right now, I am doing my very best for my
family because I know that one day my kids will fulfill all my frustrations in life.”
From Students
“As a student from a middle class family, I pity the less fortunate because
rain or shine, they still work hard to provide the needs of their family. On the other
hand, I salute them for being so strong, for smiling despite their hardships, the
perseverance and endurance that they show us is very inspiring. They all play
a very important role in a student’s life. For instance, a driver drives us to our
destination and makes sure that we are safe and honestly gives us our change.
The street vendors help us to satisfy our hunger since the food they sell are
inexpensive and ready to eat. The construction workers who fix the road in order
for us to have a safe drive. Without them we have an uncomfortable ride. I know
that they cause traffic congestion at times but this is something everyone has to
live with. As a future Medical Technologist, I can share my knowledge to them by
giving them the awareness of the diseases they can get. I can advise the sidewalk
vendors who sell street food to maintain cleanliness to avoid contamination. I will
also encourage them to make it a habit to always have a general check-up in the
nearest health centers so they can monitor their health. My contribution to the
community is to help other people in maintaining cleanliness and be a good role
model, by being humble and respectful to the elders. I will also promote, restore
and maintain the health of the people.’’ – Marlanne Delos Santos, Medical
Technology
“As a commuter, I can say that I feel humbled to see them striving so hard
to overcome poverty. They don’t just wait for the blessings to come, take that as
a hindrance to be productive but and instead, they take poverty as a challenge
and test that will measure their capabilities. Vendors, drivers, and laborers serve
as important people to us because not all of us are capable of having a car that
will bring us to school and it is important to have them, for us to survive every day.
As a future Psychologist, the best way to help them is to promote camaraderie
among fellow drivers, vendors, and laborers. For them to have a harmonious
environment. For everyone to work in a peaceful environment that will make
us more productive and make work enjoyable. My biggest contribution to the
community is the promotion of harmonious relationships by making peaceful
conversations with them. As a youth, I proper dealing or interaction with them
that will lead to good relationships with others is the best contribution that I can
give. No one wants to have a bad relationship with others. My contribution to the
community as a youth is to provide and discover new knowledge in the health
sector that will help them understand each other.’’ – Calvin Navarro, Arts and
Sciences
“I consider them as heroes of society because even though a lot of them
had not pursued or finished their studies, they still work hard. They play a very
important role in my life as a student because they provide things and services I
need. As a future Optometrist, I can help them by giving my best to provide good
service in terms of their sight. As a youth I will study hard so I can give my best
to those who may need my services in the future.’’ – Jessica Felix, Optometry
Wheel of Will
Centralinos, our life is like a wheel where like Mr. Driver, we take control
of our decisions. We are accountable for our mistakes. If he was able to surpass
those everyday complications, how about us? What holds us towards our future?
Is it a bundle of dreams? Our dreams may be different from each other’s but we
all have one thing in common, and that is our purpose and how to live with it.
The inspiring man has experienced falling down, have regrets, but he used
those to guide him to bounce back for his family. Now, he nurtures his children
on the importance of education. That someday the fruits of his labor will pay off.
As for the aspiring students who have all the chance to study and have a good
future, we know that one of our purposes in life involves connecting with people
around us. The wheel of will is in our hands. Overcome your trials with willpower.
After all, being successful is not about the money we get, the luxurious
house we dream of and the number of investments we have. Being successful
is about being happy and contented with your life. It’s about being strong in life’s
given challenges. It’s about being faithful to God in whatever circumstances may
be. That’s why right now, do not let the opportunity pass. Aim high and work hard
for success!

Hey, sleepy head! Get up now!
Challenge brings you no comfort,
Leave your pillow,
It needs effort.
The time will not be waiting.
There is no way for shortcuts,
Cut your sleeping.
No time for games.
Stand up! And finish your thing.
Start practicing.
Being idle is nothing.
Keep on moving.
Help yourself to reach your goal.
Have faith in God.
Trust Him, you can push a wall.
Aim for the good.
Madalas sa pagtitiis, sa pagpipigil ay malabis;
Buong Paglilinlang
Ni Jesebel M. San Andres, Business and Technology
Mahirap pala ang magbulag-bulagan,
At tanggapin ang katotohanan
Magpanggap kahit na nasasaktan
At magtapang-tapangan sa harap ninuman.
Sinubukan kong ika’y kalimutan,
Iwaglit kahit minsan sa isipan
Alaala mo’y pilit kong iniiwasan

Pasukan Na Naman Pala
By Alexis S. Hacutina, Medical Technology
Creed
By Alfred D. Hijosa, Arts and Sciences
Society trembles in the eyes of fear
Secrets lie within the shadows beneath
As they fall down while the danger comes near
Blades of justice are lurking underneath.
These people work with deafening silence
Moving through the crowd with the grace of a cat
Waiting for their prey and armed with patience
Throat slit from nowhere with a deadly cut.
Sa pagtunog ng alarm clock
Ako sa kama’y lumagapak
Ang payapa kong diwa
Bigla na lang nataranta.
Pakikinig sa mga talakayan
Pautakan sa silid-aralan
‘Yan ang buhay estudyante
Minsan nga’y nakakatorete.
Kumaripas agad sa banyo
Upang ako’y maligo
‘Pagkat late na naman ako!
Ano pa nga bang bago?
Mga bagong hamon parating na
Ang siyang susubok sa bawat isa
Pwede namang magpakasaya
Huwag nga lang sobra-sobra.
Madali akong nagbihis
Upang makakain bago umalis
Salamat sa dakila kong nanay
Sa isang basong gatas at tinapay.
Laging tandaan na kahit nahihirapan
Ang pag-aaral ay ‘di dapat sukuan
Alalahanin ating mga mahal na magulang
Na kumakayod para tayo’y mapag-aral lang.
Sa kasagsagan ng biyahe ko
Mayroon akong napagtanto
Sampung buwang bakbakan na naman
Sa sinisintang paaralan.
Jeep na sinasakyan ko
Narating na ang destinasyon ko
Sa tapat nito ako’y napabuntong-hininga
Hay buhay . . . pasukan na naman pala.
“Nothing’s true, everything is permitted”
A code in which these assailants live for
Shadows running forward to those condemned
Piercing through their suits, shields and armors.
Families saved from hands of injustice
Lived to tell the tales of the brotherhood
They’d break free from the chains of cowardice
Rose from the ashes, fought for the good.
One by one they trampled the oppressor
United they stand, divided they fall
Travelling oceans, mighty as they soar
What would you do next should have been your call.
Dives and Lazarus
By Nataniel N. Laguitan, Medical Technology
Living in street was never easy.
To be kicked in every society,
Pretend that they never saw me.
Few can see the ruined humanity.
In cold winter I sought shelter,
But none should let me enter.
Still my heart never turned bitter,
As this cold makes my lips stutter.
In rich man’s crumbs I was fed,
As mongrels lick my sores ahead.
Until the disease got me dead,
And the rich man’s life came to an end.
In Abraham’s bosom I was sent,
While the rich man in hell, he tormented.
And the lesson will sense to repent,
To those merciless who wish to ascent?
