antalya, turkey - Semester at Sea
ANTALYA, TURKEY
Arrive: 0800 Wednesday, July 3
Onboard: 1800 Friday, July 5
Brief Overview: Turkey is a vibrant and astonishing blend
of history and culture situated at the crossroads of Asia,
the Middle East and Europe, commonly referred to as
Asia Minor. The southern city of Antalya may not be
familiar by name, but it has a rich Greco-Roman history
and was the starting point of St. Paul’s first missionary
journey. The newly restored “old town” oozes charm and
a wealth of artifacts and interesting exhibits are on
display at the Archaeology Museum. Be sure to try some
Turkish pancakes, Gozleme, while you are here and sip
some Turkish tea at a local tea house.
Nearby: Many sites of the early Christian church are
located nearby including Perge, Psidian, Antioch and
Iconium. The home of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus!) is
about 2 hours away in Demre, Myra. The world’s oldest
intact amphitheater is in nearby Aspendos and is still being utilized for performances. Beneath the
clear waters of the Mediterranean, the sunken city of Kekova is a fascinating place to explore.
Students may opt to hike to Chimera, the site of the eternal Olympic flame. You can also go river
rafting in the Taurus Mountains or spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local beaches.
Overnight: The World Heritage Site of Pamukkale and its natural wonder “cotton castle” are considered
to be the “Yellowstone of Turkey”. Aphrodisias, the art and marble center of the Roman era, also
boasts the world’s oldest stadium. Xanthos, another World Heritage Site and the former capital of
Lycia, is a premier archaeological site. Buried under sand dunes, the remains of Patara are also a
spectacular site.
