Several years ago, a young mother of three received her GED through Excel. Over the years
she became a volunteer in the thrift shop and served on the Excel board
She lives in a troubled housing complex that sees many visits from the police for drugs and
disturbances. She has become an anchor in the complex, especially for the children. She walks the
kids to school and started a community garden tended by the children. Last fall, she and the children
hosted a picnic for complex residents with produce provided by their garden and meat purchased by
recycling soda cans.
Working with Excel has not only improved her life, but has allowed her to work to improve the lives
of others in her community.

I’m most amazed at what an extra loving mentor in
a kid’s life does for them… We don’t have to help
Rickiea much with school, he’s smart. And we don’t
have to tell him to play video games less, he knows he
plays too much already. We just have to point him
towards something bigger and more challenging. We just
want him to know about all the opportunities available,
and believe that exposure will allow him to achieve what
he wants to become.

April 28, 2014 Tornadoes
United Way of Northeast Mississippi’s mission is “ to create
opportunities to improve lives in the communities we serve.” After the
devastating tornadoes that hit Lee and Itawamba counties on April 28, 2014,
United Way had to find a way to help people in these communities recover.
In the days, weeks, and months following the storms, United Way
coordinated over 3,000 volunteers that came into Northeast Mississippi to
assist with debris removal. United
Way’s Volunteer Reception Center
served as a base where volunteers
could arrive to find out what work
was needed and where to go to
help.
United Way was also able to rent equipment through Paul Smithey
Construction Company so that volunteer operators could clear large debris
for homeowners, saving residents
thousands of dollars in debris removal
costs.
Through generous donations from the
community and the volunteer time of
thousands of people around the
country, Northeast Mississippi has
been able to recover much more
quickly than anticipated. United Way is
honored to have been able to do our
part to help our neighbors rebuild their lives.

A single mother of two came into The Salvation
Army store after the home she was renting in
Tupelo burned down. The family lost everything
they owned. They wanted to move to Pontotoc County
where rent was cheaper. Mom had the money for a
deposit, but not the first month’s rent. We listened and
cried with her, and we were able to pay her rent for
the first month. We were also able to help her with a
bed and other household items to furnish her new
home. The mother had a good job at Toyota, but she
just needed a little help to get back on her feet after
losing everything.

When most kids get to Faith Haven,
they are scared and crying. They
expect the worst. But when a kid
comes, they don’t want to leave. They fall
in love with the house and the staff. I know
Faith Haven is an emergency shelter, but it
is so much more than that. It is a place
where kids can collect themselves, where
they can take a break from the stress in
their lives. It is like a gas station and the
kids stop to fill up, so they have enough
energy to go on.

When Jack began receiving treatment at the
Autism Center, he didn’t speak, used limited
sign language, and had no eye contact or interaction
with people or toys. Two weeks into his treatment, I
went to pick Jack up from a session. A staff member
said, “Wait. Just wait until you see.” Jack was at his
work table with a pegboard. Calm, serene, and with a
smile on his face, he counted the pegs, out loud, one
to five. It was the single greatest, sweetest, most
rewarding moment of my life.

They came out here and they
fixed the front of my house. They
did a good job. It looked like a new trailer!

It was all torn out in the front, it was real
bad. And they made it look like it was

They did it all for free, no money, and
that’s God’s blessing. The Lord has been

The best way to give: United Way’s County Impact Funds
You can choose to designate your gift to United Way’s recommended choice for
giving, the County Impact Fund. This fund is overseen by local volunteers who
make funding decisions to nonprofits based upon agency review and the needs
of your community. This fund places more dollars where they are needed most
to improve lives and make our community a better place to work and live.
Specific United Way Partner Agency
You can choose to designate your gift to a specific United Way of Northeast
Mississippi partner agency. Partner Agencies receive designated amounts first
and allocations to agencies are determined from undesignated funds. Amounts
published as received by agencies include a total of both designated and
undesignated funds.
Another United Way Organization
Your gift can be sent to a United Way organization serving another community
anywhere in the United States.
Additional Designation Information
The donor must renew his/her designation each year if he/she wishes for it to
continue. Designation criteria does not automatically carry over each year.
In cases where the gift is designated to an organization that does not meet the
criteria, United Way of Northeast Mississippi will direct the gift to County
Impact Funds where it will work for the common good by impacting lives and
improving communities across Northeast Mississippi.
Pledges to Partner Agencies
United Way of Northeast Mississippi will pay designations minus 6% pledge
loss, 7% fundraising costs, and 12% administrative expense.

Unite to End Hunger Food Sculpture Competition
Since 2014, United Way has hosted the annual Unite to End Hunger food
sculpture competition in conjunction with the Campaign Celebration in early
spring. During this event, teams from local
business and organizations create sculptures
from canned and boxed foods. After judging, the
food is donated to United Way partner agencies
that are feeding the hungry in Northeast
Mississippi. In 2015, thirty pallets of food was
collected and donated.
United Way Back 2 School Resource Fairs
Each summer, United Way partners with local businesses and organizations to
provide backpacks and school supplies for students
entering K-6th grades. A Back 2 School Resource Fair
event takes place in each of the seven counties United
Way covers. In 2014, United Way and our partners
provided backpacks and supplies for over 4,000
children in our area.
