It is an opportunity to recognise the intellectual enquiry, imagination and creative skills of the graduating cohort of 2015. The study of design within what is now NTU started in 1843, and the current BA course continues to look to the future, examining topics such as retailing, innovative spaces, creative re-use and workplace, all of which have academic as well as professional relevance and contribute to the wider debate on designed environments. At NTU, design and the design studio are central to the course ethos, which is based on an understanding of Interior Architecture and Design in a world increasingly defined by globalization, the transformative impact of technology on form and culture and the need for innovative and sustainable development. It is pleasing to note that, this year at NTU, our placement students and graduates will join leading firms in the UK and abroad. I would like to thank the academics, practitioners, technicians and administrators who have tutored and supported students in the design studio, workshops and throughout the academic year. Similarly I would like to acknowledge the contribution of design principals at Dalziel & Pow and the John Lewis Partnership in connection with our successful participation in the Retail Design Expo Student Awards. The School as a whole has been enriched by the creative endeavour and commitment shown by IAD students in producing the work contained within this volume. Iain L Macdonald Head of Architecture 4 5 Course Overview In my first year as Course Leader of BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (IAD) I am delighted to offer an overview of the Course and the IAD BA Graduates of 2015. Accredited by the Chartered Society of Designers; the BA Interior Architecture and Design course focuses on the creation and manipulation of interior space, volume and human engagement. The three key elements applicable to each year are discover, develop and define. Central to studying Interior Architecture is the design studio where ideas are explored, concepts realized and skills developed. The creative environment of studio is reinforced by practical experience, by offering a year out work placement placement after second year. Nottingham Trent University is one of only a handful of courses in the UK offering students this opportunity to develop an understanding of the design industry and professional practice. On return to university, final-year students harness the experience and knowledge gained from placement and focus this on several assignments including a final major project where students explore in depth a subject of interest. This includes research and visual communication through a series of progressively detailed design documents. A synthesis of the factors which influence interior architecture provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their emerging personal design ethos, through generating often complex responses to contemporary design challenges. In addition to the core curriculum, our Graduates have successfully entered national competitions, winning Retail Design Expo 2015 at Olympia London. Students have participated in College and University activities and undertaken study trips in the UK and Europe. The IAD BA Graduates of 2015 are contained within this book and have risen to these design challenges. In July 2015 our IAD BA graduates will be exhibiting at the Free Range Graduate Art & Design show at the Old Truman Brewery, London E1. The final-year group have worked as a team to raise over £10,000 for this show; their energy, enthusiasm and commitment is boundless and all of the IAD Course team are immensely proud to have been part of their journey. We will miss them, but look forward to learning of their progression in their chosen career paths. We also look forward to Alumni returning to Nottingham Trent University to offer guidance and inspiration to our undergraduates of the future. I would like to express my gratitude to all of the teams within the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, our strong administrative team and colleagues who have encouraged and supported our students over the last four years. We hope that the friendships, experiences and your degree will be looked back upon as a special time in your life, and we offer our very best wishes and congratulations to all the IAD BA Graduates of 2015.
