Dear Mr. Avanzino,
On behalf of the Seattle Humane Society, we are requesting your
consideration for funding to expand our programs promoting the adoption
of senior dogs and cats. Founded in 1897, the Seattle Humane Society is
the largest private, nonprofit shelter serving Seattle and King County. We are
committed to providing the resources necessary to build lifelong relationships
between people and their pets.

We accept all animals regardless of space, age, breed, health, or temperament and
work to find homes for all healthy and adoptable animals—no matter how long it
takes. Our medical team goes the extra mile to make shelter guests adoptable,
whether this means removing an unsightly lump, bump, or a painful eye,
repairing a bad knee, or providing other medical care. If animals have treatable
conditions, they get a new chance at the Seattle Humane Society. We even have
an arrangement with a local veterinary clinic to treat older cats with
hyperthyroidism.
Mark E. Christopher, CPA
In June 2006, the Seattle Humane Society changed the policy to eliminate age as
a reason to take the life of a shelter guest. Since then we’ve made marketing
older dogs and cats a top priority by developing a comprehensive and vibrant
marketing strategy that incorporates media, special events, education and
outreach. Now all healthy and adoptable companion animals of any age have as
long as it takes for us to find them a home of their own.

We’ve put older pets in the spotlight—literally. Every month we distribute 2,000 “Spotlight” fliers featuring
hard-to-place cats and dogs to veterinarians, kennels, and pet stores. Over 70 percent have been senior pets. In
the past year, 83 percent of those senior pets who were spotlighted were adopted. Those still with us will
have as long as it takes for us to find them a home of their own. Many of those are receiving home care with
foster volunteers.
Our quarterly newsletter, Chronicles, with a circulation of 14,500, often features senior pets. Our
summer 2008 issue was a special edition focusing on “The Joy of Senior Pets” and included letters
from adopters, as well as adoption success stories.
Redesigning our website has been one of our most successful strategies. The 40,000 people per
month who visit our website find senior pets front and center. When visitors search pets available
for adoption and sort by age, the results are displayed oldest to youngest. In the past, pets were
listed randomly. Older pets are featured in half of the adoption success stories on the website. A
message from our CEO, “Adopting an Older Companion,” encourages people to consider adopting senior
pets.
The website also includes specific information about older pets in Senior Dog Central and Senior Cat Central,
where the following topics are featured: common behavior changes in older pets, monitoring your pet for
signs of disease, senior pet care, cataracts, and arthritis. Thus our commitment to older pets doesn’t end when
they are adopted. We provide resources for pet owners before and after they leave the shelter.
We maintain a strong media presence in print, radio, television, and the internet. Senior cats and dogs are
frequent “Media Stars,” appearing on air or in print, where the exposure draws attention to senior pets—
and gives them a better chance at adoption. In the past two years, over 200 senior pets have appeared in
the media, and 90 percent of them have been adopted.
Our marketing strategy for senior pets includes special events promotions. Last May, for “Adopt-aSenior-Pet” month, we distributed a press release highlighting the top five reasons to adopt a senior,
offering discounted adoption fees and a special, decorative collar. We also created a “Senior Pets Are
Best” poster to promote the month-long event. We saw a 17 percent increase in adoptions in May from
the previous year.
Our marketing strategy for senior pets is integrated into everything we do, including our education and
outreach events. At our summer day camp, for example, kids learn about older pets and design adoption
posters for the older cats and dogs. Older cats and dogs are also a part of visits to workplace giving
events, retirement homes, and health care facilities.
The key message—that older pets are often the best pets—is voiced by everyone from our Board
Members to our adoption advisors and volunteers.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Brenda F. Barnette

Banana Gets Another Chance
Banana, a 9-year old Labrador Retriever, was on death row
at a municipal shelter. She was missing most of the fur on
her back, but we could see that there was a special sparkle
in Banana’s eyes. Our staff rescued Banana and brought her
to the Seattle Humane Society, where we gave her the care
and attention she needed as we worked to find her a home of
her own.
Sam and Max
Keeping the Family Together
Sam and Max, 11-year-old Burmese brothers, were
surrendered to the Seattle Humane Society when their
guardian passed away. Sad and depressed, they had stopped
eating and were extremely underweight.
These brothers needed some extra attention and time, so
they were given special accommodations in one of our staff
offices where they could get the pampering they needed and
could be encouraged to eat. At most shelters, Sam and Max’s
depression, lack of appetite and age would have been a death
sentence. Luckily, they ended up at the Seattle Humane
Society, where age is not a factor We knew they would thrive
with a little TLC.
After just two months, Sam and Max seemed like new cats.
We learned that Sam is the more outgoing of the two and
Max is more playful. Both cats love to be around people
and are quite talkative with one another. Our adoption staff
looked for a family able to adopt both brothers together, and
we found the perfect match! Now Sam and Max are starting
a new chapter of life in a home of their own.
Our veterinarians checked Banana over from head to toe. As
with most older animals, she had a blood test to make sure
her internal systems were in good shape. Banana was given
medication and special food for her itchy skin, and her health
and appearance improved.
Banana was temporarily placed in one of our fabulous
volunteer foster homes, where she got lots of loving care.
Banana patiently waited and thrived for six months until
Carolyn adopted her. “She has been a real joy to me and
I couldn’t ask for a better pet.” Banana’s fur has grown in
completely and she has lots of energy and a wonderful new
home!

A Message from the Chief Executive Officer:
Dear Animal Lovers,
I received a lovely note from a woman I have come
to know as a dedicated champion for the animals. As
I read her note, Sammy Cahn’s haunting lyrics set to
Jimmy Van Heusen’s score “The Second Time Around”
immediately came to mind. Bing Crosby crooned them
in a film, and Frank Sinatra put them on the charts,
“Love is lovelier the second time around…Just as
wonderful with both feet on the ground.”
The note said, “I wanted you and other animal lovers
to hear about my totally unexpected and wonderful
C E O B re n d a B a rn e t t e w ith Tulip,

hers at 20 years!)…I was told that one was very shy
and really expected to have a difficult time. But nearly
three weeks later the three of us are the greatest friends….They are perfectly trained,
sandbox, no scratching…They had lived indoors all their lives so I could take them into my
apartment…I want more people to know how satisfying it is to adopt older animals—all
three of us are happy. I was quite surprised since I had no idea they would adapt so well
and be so happy and make me so happy, too!”
There are many advantages to adopting mature animals. You already know what they are
going to look like and what size they will be, and you will quickly know their personalities
rather than waiting through those sometimes very trying development stages to find out
who they will become. I believe that mature animals are more poised, and in some ways
that makes them easier to train.
If you are considering adopting an older animal, look for a clean bill of health or be sure
that you are willing to deal with the expense and extra care if the animal has a medical
condition. For cats, ask about litter box habits. For dogs, ask if she is housetrained
and what she does when left alone for a few hours. Ask if there have been any behavior
challenges such as scratching, biting or guarding their food or possessions. When looking
for mature dogs and cats, look for an animal who is gentle and you are comfortable
handling.
Like the song says,
“Love’s more comfortable the second time you fall
Like a friendly home the second time you call
Who can say what led us to this miracle we’ve found?
There are those who’ll bet love comes but once and yet
I’m oh so glad we met the second time around…”
Mature animals need us when circumstance leaves them without a family. Often, they have
been given up by people who loved them, and they are well-adjusted and trained. If you
aren’t quite ready for the housetraining, chewing, or climbing antics of a puppy or kitten,
but you are ready for unconditional love and companionship, come by the Seattle Humane
Society and meet our mature shelter guests who are waiting to meet that special someone
“The Second Time Around.”

Letter from an Adopter:
Dear Seattle Humane Society:
Last spring I made the difficult decision to bring you
my cat, Trudy. I cried and anguished over her fate and
couldn’t bring myself to call you for an update. I assumed
she had been euthanized and, believe me, I was kicking
myself for it.
Dorothy. This time I cried with tears of joy. I was so
relieved to know she had found a loving home.
My heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the Seattle Humane
Society and to Dorothy!
~ Darlene
I knew Trudy had a very wonderful side to her, but she just
couldn’t be with other animals and I had another cat and a
dog and the situation had become so stressful for her and
me, I made the decision to let her go.
I received your quarterly newsletter this past week and to
my great surprise and pleasure, there she was, pictured

A Huge Success!
On April 26, more than 800 animal lovers came together
to celebrate the human-animal bond at the Seattle Humane
Society’s 19th annual Tuxes & Tails gala. Though the spirit
was festive, the intent was serious – to save the lives of
animals. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, more
than $810,000 was raised to rescue animals on death row, and
to support the work of providing pets with safe, loving homes.
True to our 2008 Tuxes theme, Pirates and Pets of the
Caribbean, the room was a sea of eye-patches and “Arghs.”
Shelter animals in all shapes and sizes charmed the crowd,
volunteer handlers in tow. One of our shelter dogs, a cute
little Daschund mix named Freddy, captured the heart of one
of our Tuxes guests and was adopted the very next day!
By the time the live auction was underway, the energy in
the air was palpable. Looking at the bid paddles raised high,
it was clear there would be no need to search for buried
treasure!
The most inspiring part of the night was the unveiling of
the 2008 Fund-A-Need project. This year’s greatest need
is a fund to provide extra medical care to dogs who would
otherwise be killed at other shelters. With this fund, the
Seattle Humane Society hopes to save at least 100 more dogs
every year. Longtime supporters James and Bet Schuler
began the bidding with a $25,000 pledge. The response
was incredible! It seemed every hand was raised to make a
contribution. The Schulers were so moved by the outpouring,
PLEASE JOIN US IN THANKING OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS

they made an additional contribution of $25,000 that night,
and pledged another $80,000 gift over the next four years! A
total of $290,000 was raised for the Lexus Fund, in memory of
the Schuler’s special dog Lexus (pictured below).
To close the night, local celebrities “walked the plank”
accompanied by lovely pets sporting the latest in canine
fashion. Behind every shelter animal that strutted the runway
was a story, a story of last chances and new beginnings, thanks
to the Seattle Humane Society and its supporters.
Thank you for making this year’s Tuxes a success. With your
continued support, we have become the largest animal shelter
serving King County. We save more animals’ lives than any
other shelter, and with you as our partner, we can do even more.
Tuxes & Tails was presented this year by AlphaGraphics,
GoMobile, and Laird Norton Tyee.

David and Jada
Dear Seattle Humane Society:
I am a happy owner of a Shepherd/Rottweiler/
Cattle Dog mix that I adopted from you in
June of 1999. Back then she was named
“Smiles” because of her tendency to bare
her teeth (without growling) when she’s
happy to see someone, as she demonstrated
when I came across her kennel space. I fell
in love with her almost instantly!
“Smiles” has been renamed “Jada,” and
we’re now settled in the San Francisco
Bay Area, where Jada has remained a
rambunctious and loving companion for the
last nine years. She retained her tendency to
“smile” at visitors as her way of greeting, a
habit I always take pleasure in explaining to
my sometimes alarmed guests.
I want to thank your staff for connecting me
with Jada; without her my life during the
past nine years would have been a lot less
fulfilling.

Scarlet
Scarlet, a 4-year-old tortoiseshell cat, was
roaming the streets of Renton trying to fend for
herself before she was brought to the Seattle
Humane Society. Our veterinary team placed
Scarlet in one of our loving foster homes
where she could recuperate from an upper
respiratory infection, get the medicine she
needed, and enjoy some extra pampering.
Scarlet enjoyed sitting on her volunteer
foster mom’s lap and purring while they
both watched a nature program on TV. Once
Scarlet was feeling better, we found her a
home of her own. Scarlett has gone from
homeless to homebody!

Letter from an Adopter:
Dear Seattle Humane Society:
Our story begins nearly two decades ago, in
November 1988, when we visited your shelter with
plans to adopt two kittens. Fate stepped in and the
additions to our family ended up being 1-year-old
Honey Dew, named after the melon, we were told, for
his eye color; and 6-month old Mel, named after Mel
Gibson, again for his eyes.
Our boys have been the lead item in Christmas letters,
and a reporter friend at the King County Journal
included them on occasion in her column. They
accompanied us on a driving trip to Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico, eight years ago, prompting much excitement
and conversation on our stops along the way.
With their antics and personalities, they filled our
lives with stories, love and laughter, and now with
happy memories. Bladder cancer took our boys: both
died within a year of each other at the age of 17.

Lorenzo is such an amazing dog. He has gotten along great
with my cats. He is easy to train and now knows “down,”
“stay,” “wait,” “rollover,” “spin,” and “shake.” He is great
with children and dogs. I knew having a dog would be fun, but I
didn’t know it would be this much fun!
I couldn’t have imagined that things would have worked out so
well. I smile or laugh every day watching him gallop around
the yard in a goofy fit or seeing his big smile when he is playing
with other dogs.
The best part of
my day is watching
him wake up and
stretch and wag his
tail at me.
Thank you so much
for the work you do
and for giving pit
bulls like Lorenzo a
second chance. I’m
so lucky that I came
in that day and was
the one that got to
bring him home.

Stu, a handsome tabby cat, and Victoria, a
regal white cat, are a very friendly
12-year-old pair. They both love to be
around people, rubbing and purring and
gazing at you with those gorgeous eyes. As
with all of our fabulous felines, volunteers
spend time playing with and brushing
“King Stu” and “Queen Victoria” (as they
have been nicknamed), and we will give
them both as long as it takes for us to find
them the perfect home. Come meet this
royal pair for yourself today, and you’ll
both be glad you did as they purr their way
right into your heart!

Eimanne El Zein is not your typical teenager. At 14, she has traveled the world,
makes short films, and plans one day to race a sled in the Iditarod. She also cares
an awful lot about animals—and not just her own three rats, two cats and a sled
dog, named Ringo.
Eimanne is a member of the Humane Teen Club at the
Seattle Humane Society. The club was started in 2002
to provide volunteer opportunities for young people and
expose them to the benefits of animal companionship.
At monthly meetings over the course of the school year,
Humane Teens learn animal handling skills, participate
in community outreach activities, and must complete a
service project in order to graduate.
For her project, Eimanne organized the Furry Friends Skate
Day and silent auction at Lynnwood Ice Center. She promoted
the event, sold tickets and solicited donations from downtown
Edmonds businesses for the auction.
She raised nearly $1,000 for the Seattle Humane Society that
February day. Eimanne says, “If it hadn’t been so sunny, we
might have done even better.”
“I’ve worked with a lot of teens, and Eimanne is about as put
together as they come,” says Kate Reedy, director of the Seattle
Human Society’s Education Department, which runs the program.
“The energy that she and all the other wonderful Humane Teens
bring really feeds back into our organization as a whole and helps
keep us current.”

High energy dogs like Elmo have a hard time being kenneled
for long periods, so our staff often shared their offices with
Elmo and coordinated for a volunteer to take Elmo to Tiger
Mountain for weekly hikes. Our behavior program staff
and volunteers worked with Elmo to help him heal from his
traumatic past.
As soon as the trial ended, we placed Elmo into one of our
amazing volunteer foster homes. Almost a year later, we were
able to match Elmo with the perfect family for him. Now
Elmo is enjoying his new life with Aaron, Brie, dog Chloe,
and two cats. Elmo touched many hearts while in our care,
and we are thrilled to see him so happy.

Celebrating 1,000 Adoptions in 2008!
On May 1, the staff at the Seattle
Humane Society clapped and whooped when
a lovely woman named Melissa Remirez De
Estenoz chose to adopt a special cat named
George.
Ms. Remirez De Estenoz looked a little
stunned by the applause, until we told her
that 14-year-old George was the 1,000th pet
to be adopted from our shelter this year. Then
she broke into a big smile and said, “Oh, how
wonderful!”
She had come to the Seattle Humane Society
to find a good pet for her 85-year-old mother,
Sheila, who lives in her home and has
Alzheimer’s disease.
“I’m adopting George for my mom, because
she needs someone to love,” said Ms. Remirez
De Estenoz. “She just lost my father, and
George reminds me of him…a stoic architect
who was quiet,” and quite the opposite of her
talkative mother.
Research shows that seniors do better when
they have a pet. They eat more regularly
because they remember to feed the pet. And
they get more exercise caring for the pet.

As our 1,000th adopter, Ms. Remirez De
Estenoz was treated to a gift basket with lots
of goodies to make George feel right at home:
food, toys, and a new cat box with litter.
Some people say that the
Seattle Humane Society has
the best pets anywhere,
and we agree!

MAY 3 EVENT KICKS OFF “ADOPT-A-SENIOR PET” MONTH
Find Out the Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Senior Pet!
The Seattle Humane Society is kicking off “Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month” with a special event on Saturday,
May 3. Every senior cat that is adopted Saturday will receive a decorative collar to wear to his or her new
home. The cost for adopting senior dogs and cats, age 8 and over, is $50 all month long.
“It is wonderful to be able to re-home a senior pet,” said Brenda Barnette, CEO of the Seattle Humane
Society. “Everyone benefits; the former caregiver is relieved that their trusted friend will be cared for when
they can no longer provide the care, the new family gets a great new friend, and a fabulous pet gets a
loving home.”
At some shelters, pets over the age of three are not considered “adoptable,” but at the Seattle Humane
Society we know that older pets are often the best pets to have! That’s why the Seattle Humane Society
finds homes for every loving pet that comes through its doors, no matter their age. Visit the Seattle
Humane Society’s campus in Bellevue to meet fabulous senior pets who have so much love left to give.
Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Senior Pet:
♦
♦
♦
♦
♦
MELLOW PERSONALITY
Senior pets have fully-formed personalities, so you know what you are getting! Plus, senior pets
have just the right level of playfulness for busy families.
ALREADY HOUSE-TRAINED
Senior pets have already learned many of life’s lessons.
FIT IN TO YOUR FAMILY QUICKLY
Older pets seem to acclimate more quickly to new settings.
HAVE A LOT OF LOVE TO GIVE
Many of our adopters say that senior pets really seem to appreciate it when they are adopted and
bond to their new family more readily than younger pets.
OLD DOGS CAN LEARN NEW TRICKS!
With older pets, you don’t have to waste time teaching them all the basics – they already know
them! Instead, have fun teaching them new tricks!
Visit the Seattle Humane Society in person at 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue, or see the pets online
at www.seattlehumane.org. Adoption fees for all senior dogs and cats are just $50 and include
microchipping, vaccinations, spay/neuter, 30 days of pet health insurance, and a certificate for an
examination by a King County veterinarian.
The Seattle Humane Society was founded in 1897 to bring people and pets together. The Seattle Humane Society
does this today through its low-fee spay/neuter surgery program, pet workshops and training, pet food bank, humane
teen club, visiting pets program and more. The Seattle Humane Society is located in Bellevue, at 13212 SE Eastgate
Way. For directions and more information, visit www.seattlehumane.org or call (425) 641-0080.
