100th Anniversary Of The
Straightening Of CPR Grain
Elevator After Major Incident
To Be Recognized In October
By Alanna Horejda, Curator,
Transcona Historical Museum
On 18 October 1913, the new CPR Grain Elevator located
at the railway’s North Transcona Yard began to sink into the
ground on its west side. Within the first hour, the million-bushel
bin house – over three-quarters filled — had fallen over one foot,
and the bridge connecting it with the work house had broken off
and fallen to the ground. By the time the elevator had come to a
stop, it had sunk 24 feet with the structure sitting at an angle 27
degrees off centre. This occurred approximately one month after
CPR had started storing grain in the bin house.
Just one year later on 17 October 1914, the bin house
was once again vertical as work was completed to straighten
and lift the elevator. The collapse of the CPR bin house by soil
failure is widely studied by engineers around the world today.

The Best In Sight
Your Baby’s Eyes (Part Two)
By Elisa Fiorentino, O.D.
At eight-to-12 months, your baby
will become more mobile. Crawling
and exploring are important to help
the child learn to coordinate the use
of arms, legs and eyes. Slowly, she
will learn to pull herself up onto a
fixed object. Now the eyes will be
used together and depth perception
will improve. Objects will be thrown
accurately! Continue to provide toys
that your child can touch, hold and
see at the same time. To help with
vocabulary, name objects while talking to your child.
Particularly at this stage and
throughout childhood, it is very important to watch for any signs of
eyes crossing or turning. This warrants immediate professional attention so that it may be corrected as
soon as possible. If left untreated,
the eye that turns may become lazy
causing the vision to become blurry
in that eye.
At age one-to-two years, eyehand coordination and depth perception continue to improve, and your
child will be able to understand more
abstract terms. Your child will begin
to walk during this stage. In order to
October 2014 - Page 2
improve fine motor skills and small
muscle development, encourage
your child to play with small objects
like building blocks or puzzles.
Guessing games will help him with
thinking and speaking skills. Allow
your child to climb and explore in
safe areas. As mobility increases,
riding a bicycle or riding a rocking
horse, for example, will improve eyehand coordination.
By age two-to-three years, your
child will learn to speak in sentences
and will be more aware of her environment. Reading and telling stories
will help improve visualization skills
and help to prepare your child to
learn to read. Activities such as
drawing, painting and colouring will
help to develop visually-directed
hand movements.

Derek King: Portrait Of A Veteran
By Fiona Olsen
Every year on the 11th hour of
the 11th day of the 11th month, we
all pause to remember the many
men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in order that we
may continue to have our rights
and freedoms. We should also remember those who were fortunate
to return home to their families and
loved ones. Some were able to
continue on as things were prior to
the war; others felt the need for
change and immigrated. Many of
these Veterans continue to live in
our community.
At the young age of 18 years,
Derek King worked on the farms in
England and felt he wanted more.
With encouragement from some
friends, Derek enlisted in the
Royal Air Force (RAF) on January 10, 1949. After completing
three months of basic training,
Derek
trained
to
be
a
WOP/TOP/TELEOP (wireless operator/telephone operator/teletype
operator). He continued training
with the RAF Regiment as a signal
operator and had the rank of Leading Air Craftsman (LAC).
October 2014 - Page 4
Upon finishing his training, he
was deployed to Jordan on a peacekeeping mission. Although the war
was over, many units were still in
place to ensure the peacekeeping
operations of the post-war in Jordan.
He spent three months patrolling the
roadways, making sure they re-
mained open. While in Jordan,
Derek changed from being a radio
signal operator to a driver.
In 1952, the insurgents in Egypt
tried to block the Suez Canal.
Derek’s unit was sent to patrol a
naval ammunition dump. Equipped
with a brand new Land Rover and
armoured cars, the unit would patrol
during the evening to search vehi-
cles for weapons. One evening, they
noticed something in the distance.
They drove off the road until they
reached a barbed-wire fence.
On the other side of the fence
was a unit of the Irish Dragoons
who proceeded to inform Derek and
his fellows that they had just driven
through a minefield. Carefully, they
followed their tracks back out to the
roadway. No more trips off the main
road! After his tour in the Middle
East, Derek returned home to England as a driver for an RAF
Squadron in Northumberland.
After five years in the RAF, Derek
chose not to re-enlist and went back to
working on the farm in England. He
found that nothing had changed —
there was still rationing and housing
was short. Derek spent the next few
years in England as a bus driver and
working in the steel mills until emigrating to Canada in 1967 with his wife.
Derek continues to live in Transcona.
He is a Past Service Officer and valued member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #7 of Transcona.

With the recent announcement
by the Minister of Health that Park

project to be built on a vacant site

new facility will be joined with East
Park Lodge and the current Park
Manor 100-bed Care Home by a
connecting concourse.
This new facility will have private
accommodations and washrooms
for each resident along with state-ofthe-art, health-care provisions such
as ceiling tracks for patient lifts to
help transfer non-ambulatory residents from bed to washroom. Our vision for a Campus Of Care also
includes plans for a café, treatment
rooms and a rehabilitation centre.
There are various ways to donate: in memoriam, bequests,
pledges or gifts-in-kind. All of these
can be made directly through Park

Provincial
Fall
Seminar
Comes To Transcona — Confidence #40 has been asked to host
this year’s Fall Seminar to be held
Saturday October 18 at 9:00 AM in
Park City West Community Centre
at 115 Sanford Fleming Road. Cost
is $35 for lunch and dinner. Continental Breakfast is available for
‘early birds’ and out-of-town members for an added small fee. Registration forms are available online or
by calling Dorothy Mann at 204256-1028. This is an informal gathering of members of Odd Fellow &
Rebekah Lodges from across Manitoba where we can get updates on
projects undertaken by the Order
while enjoying fun and fellowship. As
this event is usually held in a rural
area, this will be an opportunity for
members who are unable to travel to
attend right in our own backyard.
Craft Sale Aids Eye Foundation — The Odd Fellow & Rebekah
Memorial Eye Foundation will hold
its Annual Craft Sale on Saturday
October 25 from 10:00 AM to 3:00
PM at Odd Fellows Hall in
Stonewall. Tables have been rented
to some unique crafters and there
will be lunch available for purchase.
Those pies are worth the trip! Last
year, $40,000 was donated to
Portage la Prairie Hospital to enable them to do Cataract Surgery.
We are now considering requests
from the “Wish List” of various hospital Ophthalmology departments
for our next donation for Vision Care
in Manitoba. Your support helps
make wishes come true.

Saving For School
Beyond RESPs – Options To Help What
You’re Saving Match What You’ll Need
By Darryl B. Horeczy, Consultant, Investors Group
You Want The Best For Your
Child — For plenty of powerful reasons, a college or university education is one of the best things you can
do to give your child a great start in
life. There’s the increased earning
potential: The average university
graduate earns almost twice as
much as someone with a high school
diploma. There’s the increased opportunity for employment: Sevenout-of-10 jobs now require a
post-secondary education and having a degree or diploma is bound to
become even more important in the
future.
RESPs Are The First Choice —
Contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your
child. For the vast majority of Cana-
dians, an RESP is the most effective
way to create an education fund that
grows to offset the future cost of education. However, when was the last
time you checked to see how much
of the total education bill your RESP
will actually cover? Here are some
sobering facts about the dramatically
escalating cost of a post-secondary
education:
a) On average, undergraduate
tuition fees have almost tripled since
1990-91. A student attending a fulltime college or university program
today can expect to pay an average
of $4,500 a year in tuition alone.
b) Add books, supplies, transportation and other living expenses,
and university students living at
home spend an average of $4,500

on non-educational items while students living away from home spend
an average of $8,160 on non-educational items.
c) The cost of mandatory supplies and equipment for college and
trade schools varies, and can be between $50 and $5,000.
d) Schools are increasing fees
for programs that may offer a larger
financial payback upon graduation
such as law, medicine, engineering
and dentistry.
e) Nearly 50% of Canadian college and university graduates leave
school owing money for their education with college graduates owing
about $13,000 and university graduates almost $20,000.
f) It is estimated that by 2025,
the total cost of four years of undergraduate education away from home
may be between $75,000 and
$100,000.
Beyond RESPs: More Tax-Efficient Saving Strategies — All this
means is you need every advantage
you can get when saving to help
your children pay for a post-secondary education. To avoid burdening your children with huge student
loans or the extra stress of a parttime job during the school year, consider investment strategies that can
deliver important savings such as
Tax-Free
Savings
Accounts
(TFSAs), Insurance, Tax-Advantaged Mutual Funds, Monthly Income Portfolios and Age 40
Trusts.
When the time comes, you want
your children to be able to afford the
college or university program of their
choice, to follow the career they want
and to obtain the earning power they
desire. We can help you make the
best RESP and “beyond RESP” investment choices for your life and
theirs.

Truly Remarkable — Vintage
photo showing the Transcona
(CPR) Grain Elevator bin house at
a severe angle following soil collapse on its west side. (The inset
shows the elevator and site in pristine condition.) The machinery and
cupola at the top of the bin house
smashed to the ground and were
wrecked. The crash was akin to an
explosion – the sound could be
heard for a great distance. The
20,000-ton bin house was filled with
about 875,000 bushels of wheat
which had to removed before the
structure could be righted. Incredibly,
the work house (at right) was not se-
riously affected except for some
cracks in its north shed wall. However, its foundation had to be fortified
before the straightening of the bin
house could take place. This entire
event (collapse and straightening) is
still studied in engineering circles
around the world today. “Remarkable” is a word used often to describe it. Case studies have been
written about it. The Internet is full of
references to it. One such case
study can be found as a PDF document on the Canadian Geotechnical Society website (include the

Gardens Of Delight
Winners Announced From The Annual
Show & Competition
By Domia Derkach
October is a time for reflection
on the gardening year that was as
you prepare for the year ahead. Gardeners will tell you that gardening is
a year-round hobby with only a few
weeks of a slowdown during the winter months. Exhibitors will agree that
the extra time spent on gardening is
the secret to their success at the
winner’s table.
This was never more evident
than at the Transcona Garden
Club’s Annual Show & Competition at Kildonan Place Shopping
Centre in August. The winners
were announced and presented with
their rewards at the Annual Awards
Night in September. Here are some
of this year’s Garden Club winners:
The Show Grand Aggregate
Award for most points in the overall
competition went to Bev Hooper.
She successfully defended her 2013
title. The Junior Grand Aggregate
Award was presented to Harrison
Osmond-Beach who garnered a
total of 40 points in all of the Junior
Classes. He also received Rosettes
for his Marigolds and for his Hand-
Made Greeting Card. The Joseph
Paulicelli Memorial Award was
given to Domia Derkach for Best
Bouquet of Cut Flowers.

Next Club Meeting — Will con-
cern planning and planting this year
for next year’s blooms. Tulips,
maybe? Or Daffodils or Crocus,
etc.? Tulips, for example, come in
many different colours, sizes and
shapes. But any combination of
October 2014 - Page 26
these will add a bright spot to your
garden very early in spring. This
same area can later be planted with
some colourful annuals making good
double use of the same space.
Thus, the subject for the next
meeting is entitled “Planting Bulbs
For Spring Blooms”. The meeting
will be held Wednesday October 15
at 7:00 PM in Transcona Retired
Citizens Centre at 328 Whittier Avenue West. Refreshments will be
served and everyone is welcome. At
this time, we are looking for ideas for
new programs. New ideas are always welcome.
Garden Club Fundraiser — A
Perogy Sale will be held in October
during the week prior to Thanksgiving: Potato & Cheese at $5 a dozen
and Sauerkraut at $7 per dozen.
Advance orders by telephone: Call

Report From Parliament
Businesses Large & Small Play Important Role
In The Economic Success Of Our Community
There have been many exciting
new investments in ElmwoodTranscona this year, and I have been
By Lawrence Toet, M.P., Elmwood-Transcona
thrilled to see first-hand the significant
impact large-and-small businesses have
on the prosperity of our community.
Last month, I was pleased to at-
tend the Grand Opening of the CN
Rail National Training Centre in
Transcona. Winnipeg is the hub of
CN Rail’s transcontinental network
and this major investment is great
news for our local economy here in
Transcona.
This
state-of-the-art
training centre features a new-and-
improved, company-wide training
program for both its current and future workforce.
ing
The 100,000 square-foot traincentre
is
located
at
the
Transcona Shops, 550 Pandora
Avenue East. It will be able to accommodate approximately 350 CN
students from across Canada every
week and provide hands-on training
for all key railway jobs.
It is clear that large industry
leaders like CN Rail play a major role
in boosting our local economies. Sig-
nificant investments such as this one
create opportunity for greater innovation, skills, productivity and global
competitiveness — all of which are
vital to long-term economic growth in
Canada.
Small Business Week takes
place every year during the third full
week of October. We recognize the
key role that small businesses and
entrepreneurs play in the economies
of our communities. That is why our
Government continues with its commitment to creating a better business

environment for small business en-
trepreneurs to create jobs and
growth for all Canadians. Small busi-
ness entrepreneurs are the unsung
heroes of our communities, and they
are one of the driving forces making
Canada an economic leader on the
world stage today and leading into
the future.
Canada’s small businesses cur-
rently employ 70% of the private-
sector workforce which is almost
eight-million Canadians. That’s why
our Government has introduced numerous measures since 2006 to
support small business growth in-
cluding the temporary hiring credit
and the Employment Insurance
(EI) rate freeze. In total, small businesses have seen their taxes reduced by 34 percent since 2006.
Helping small businesses in our
community to continue to grow and
thrive is essential to Canada’s con-
tinued economic prosperity which is
why our Government recently intro-
duced the Small Business Job
Credit. It will lower small busi-
dian economy, and we will continue
to support and encourage growth in
this important sector.

amount, if any, will be refunded to
the small business. Our Government
