The Best In Sight
Would You Give An Arm Or A
Leg For Your Vision?
By Alissa Boroditsky, O.D.
A 2012 study revealed that almost
70% of people worldwide would rather
give up a decade of life, or even one of
their arms or legs, than lose their vision.
If forced to choose, almost 80% of those
surveyed would rather lose their sense
of hearing or taste than lose their sight.
These statistics come from a study which
polled 11,000 consumers around the
world about their awareness and behaviors regarding eye health. These are dramatic statistics which would then lead
you to believe that all of those people are
having their eyes examined regularly.
That is not the case.
According to the study, many people
are not having regular eye exams or taking the basic steps to preserve vision.
This is unfortunate because 80% of visual
impairments can be prevented or treated
if they are detected early. If vision is so important, then why wouldn’t eyecare be
everyone’s top priority? The study
showed that there are misconceptions or
myths regarding how preventative eyecare relates to preserving your vision.
Common Misconceptions — Here
are a few common misconceptions about
vision and eye health revealed by the
study: a) 44% of people surveyed admitted that they believed: “I don’t need an
eye test unless there is a problem” ... b)
42% of participants believed: “If I can
see, then my eyes must be healthy” ... c)
39% of participants believed: “The only
reason to visit an eye doctor is for vision

corrections” ... d) 30% of participants believed: “If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not serious.”
These are all misconceptions which
need to be dispelled. In fact, some common eye diseases have no symptoms in
their early stages and are then found
during routine eye exams. In addition,
there is a lack of awareness about the

Summer Facials
The Importance Of Having Facials
In Summertime
By Transcona Salon Spa
It’s easy to underplay the importance of facials in the summer: Why
get a facial when I’ll just be slathering sunscreen on it a moment after,
you might ask? The skin really takes
a beating in the summer and while
we protect it with sunscreens and
blocks, those can easily clog pores
and lead to acne. To offset the effect
of summertime skincare, facials
reset skin by clearing out pores of
buildup from sunscreen and makeup
that builds up over time.
Get a facial during the summer
season... absolutely! This will reset
the skin by giving it a deep cleansing while de-stressing the skin. During the summer, protecting your
skin from the sunlight is of utmost
importance. Consider adding to
your summertime skin-care routine.
Stock up on Vitamin C serum to
keep the skin protected against fine
lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation
and uneven complexion.
Eminence Organic Sun Defense Minerals – Translucent —
These hypoallergenic, non-poreclogging natural minerals provide
water-resistant SPF 30 sun protection to women and men alike. They
are excellent for post-treatment use,
especially on red or blotchy skin.
Darker shades can be used as a
bronzer.
Eminence Organic Tinted
Moisturizer SPF 25 (Light) —
Soften and protect skin with an antioxidant-rich, non-clogging tinted
moisturizer. Available in three flattering shades from light to dark, this
moisturizer delivers lightweight
sheer coverage and a natural finish
with zinc for SPF 25 sun protection.
Even if you’re not acne prone, it’s
best to practice keeping skin as oilfree as possible to reduce shine and
to prevent against future breakouts.

Gel Wash — For those with even

the most sensitive skin, our Stone
Crop Gel Wash washes away impurities without drying out the skin. The
oil-free extracts help even skin tone
and minimize the appearance of
blemishes to leave a healthy complexion. Cruelty-free and formulated
without parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, animal by-products, phthalates,
GMOs and triclosan.
Wash your face after sweating
(and be sure to reapply sunscreen).
Sweating releases the body’s toxins
out through the pores and if sweat
sits on your face for long, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria
leading to acne, inflammation and
clogged pores. Most people aren’t
aware that going in-and-out of airconditioned environments, and into
the scorching sun, can severely dehydrate the skin. Dehydrated skin
can start to itch and flake, leading to
other concerns relating to premature
aging. Stay hydrated to keep your
skin fortified with moisture from the
inside out. Drink plenty of water, and
eat fruits and vegetables, and anything else with high water content.
Summer Essentials — Shield
your skin from the summer elements.
Protect against harsh rays and sun
damage with our selection of products
that naturally protect and repair. Eminence Organics of Hungary available at Transcona Salon Spa. Put

Happy Canada Day!
By Faye Jashyn
Canada Day is the national day of
Canada - a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1,
1867 enactment of the British North
America Act 1867 (today called the
Constitution Act 1867) which united
three colonies into a single country
called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day,
the holiday was re-named in 1982, the
year the Canada Act was passed.
Canada Day observances take place
throughout Canada as well as among
Canadians internationally. Happy

This is an extremely valuable tool in
maintaining a patient’s ocular health.
Other Eye-Health Tips — a) Have
regular eye examinations which include
complete ocular-health testing ... b) Be
an advocate for your own health and be
aware of any health conditions or medications which may cause eye damage.
Please be forthcoming with your optometrist about this because your eye
and general health are linked ... c) Eat a

connection between eye health and the
general health of the body. This is partly
because the veins and arteries can be
seen naturally during a thorough eye examination. This allows optometrists to
detect diseases such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes
potentially before a patient is aware.
Maintain Eye Health, Preserve Vision — At Transcona Optical, we encourage people to take steps to maintain
and preserve their vision and eye health.
This includes better care of their eyes
and improving lifestyle choices.
Transcona Optical’s newest diagnostic
instrument is the Optical Coherence
Tomographer (OCT). This allows the
regular exercise ... e) Refrain from smoking ... f) Make a conscious effort to periodically rest your eyes, especially with
prolonged computer use ... g) Avoid rubbing your eyes ... h) Wear UV-protective
sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.
Regular Examinations Essential
— The eye is not only the window to your
soul, but the window to your overall
health. Therefore, regular eye examinations are essential for detection of serious eye diseases including Glaucoma,
Age-Related Macular Degeneration or
Cataracts and to increase the chances
of early detection of other general health
conditions.

Optimist Bike Safety
Bike Riding Is A Lot Of Fun, But Accidents Happen
Provided By Transcona Optimist Club
June is our usual Bike Safety
Rodeo where kids come and do a circuit
of training on their bikes, do a test, learn
proper hand signals, and have a hot dog
and drink with the friends of Optimists.
But for the last few years, we have been
rained out and have had to cancel this
event. We are not reaching out to the
safety of our children.
Transcona Optimist Club has
come together in hopes of reaching the
kids of Transcona with a Bike Safety
Booklet. The Booklet will inform both
parent and child of bike-and-road safety
including a test for the appropriate age
and some fun games. Booklets will be
available to be picked up at the
Transcona BIZ Office, 108 Bond Street
and at Transcona Salon Spa, Unit #14
- 1783 Plessis Road.
Once the kids have done the test
and enjoyed the Booklet, they can return their test to receive a prize for their

hard work at becoming a responsible cyclist. The Booklet will cover the following
subjects:
Helmets — Wear a bike helmet
EVERY TIME YOU RIDE and learn the
proper way to wear it.
The Bike — Riding a bike that is the
right size for you also helps to keep you
safe.
Road Rules — If you’re allowed to
ride on the street, follow these road rules
contained in the Booklet.
Hand Signals — Learn hand signals because it helps the drivers of cars
and trucks know what you will do next.
The Optimist Club Of Transcona
wishes you to have a safe-and-fun summer. (Optimists - Friends of youths,

Gardens Of Delight
Join The Transcona Garden Tour To
Experience Beauty & Get Some Tips
By Domia Derkach
July is the month when plants flourish and gardens are at their best. Take a
look around the neighbourhood and you
can find a landscape or two to feast your
eyes upon. Gardeners like to talk about
their gardens and much information can
be had at these over-the-fence chats
with your neighbours.
Gardening information can also be
acquired by attending Garden Tours.
You will have an opportunity to visit and
ask questions of the respective host gardeners. If you visit a couple of Garden
Tours, you can pick up some valuable
information on ideas you might want to
try out. Look for groups who organize
such tours and get the necessary information to attend.
Transcona Garden Tour —
Transcona Garden Club is organizing
a Garden Tour for the Transcona area
which will take place on Sunday July
26. There will be a fee-per-person which
will cover expenses that will be incurred.
Final details were pending at Views
Deadline. To receive full details as to
cost, when-and-where to meet, etc., call
Pat at 204-224-3859. Everyone is welcome.

confirmed by July 15. We need to know
if you are exhibiting, where you live, what
exhibits you will have and whether you
have special instructions for entering
your yard (e.g., dog on property, etc.). All
particulars regarding the competitions
are in the Garden Club’s Show Prize
Booklet on Page 2 for Children and

To pick up your copy of the Show
Prize Booklet, visit one of the following locations during their normal business hours: Transcona Public Library
at 111 Victoria Avenue West ...
Transcona Historical Museum at 141
Regent Avenue West (at Bond
Street) ... or the Transcona BIZ Office
at 108 Bond Street. We look forward
to seeing your outdoor containers. To
confirm your entries, call 204-222-0236
by July 15.
Maintain Your Garden & Take
Care Of Yourself — Keep the weeds
and diseases controlled in your garden
and you will be well-prepared for the
Garden Club’s annual August Show &
Competition. Winning exhibits are the
result of season-long preparation, so
tend to your garden regularly. While
doing so, take care of yourself. Drink lots
of water, work during the cooler part of
the day, rest frequently, wear a hat and
sunglasses, use insect repellent, etc. And
ask for help if necessary.

Comprehensive Retirement Solutions
Convenient And Consistent Investing
So You Will Have Freedom Of Choice
In Retirement
By Darryl B. Horeczy, Consultant, Investors Group
Creating an investment portfolio
today to help fulfill your dreams for tomorrow can seem difficult at times, especially when every day brings the reality
of utility bills, mortgage payments, car
loans or lease payments and other demands on your hard-earned money. Saving enough money throughout your life to
support the lifestyle you dream about is
important to you and can be achieved
using a simple, straightforward and consistent approach. Consider for a moment
the power of making an affordable
monthly payment to your investment
plan the same as you would any of your
other monthly commitments. That’s
where our monthly investment plan can
help.
A monthly investment plan automatically deducts a specified amount from
your savings or chequing account on a
regular basis and contributes it to your
Registered Retirement Savings Plan
(RRSP), Tax-Free Savings Account
(TFSA) or non-registered investment
portfolio. This method of sustained regular investing can deliver greater financial benefits. Your investments enjoy the
benefits of dollar-cost averaging – meaning that your dollars purchase fewer units
when prices are high and more units
when prices are low, resulting in a lower
average cost to you over time for mutualfund investments. When investments
take place on a regular basis, this dollarcost averaging effect frees you from
scrambling to invest lump sums at irregular intervals in an attempt to buy low
and sell high.
Choose The Plan That Fits You —
Monthly investment plans can be customized to work best for you. We will work
with you to help determine the appropriate
dollar amount, the frequency of contributions that best fit your budget and where to
invest your money. We recommend you
begin by investing at least 10% of your
earned income each month; however, you
could also decide to invest weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly. Once your
plan is in place, we will review your
progress on a regular basis to recommend
changes in investment amounts, frequency and investments, if required.
Investing small amounts makes it easier to contribute. Coming up with $200 or
$300 per month is a lot more manageable

than finding a huge lump sum at a certain
point of the year. A balanced mutual-fund
portfolio, specifically selected to suit your
investment goals, is an ideal fit for a regular
investment plan. Investors Group offers
a variety of investment options ranging
from our conservative Investors Group
Cornerstone Portfolios to individual
funds that can fit a full range of risk-tolerance profiles. Your plan will be as unique
as you are.
Investing At Work — Another alternative is to join a group RRSP at work
and have your contribution deducted directly from your paycheque. Once you’re
contributing regularly to your RRSP, you
can approach your employer to reduce
the amount of income tax they deduct
each pay period. Using this approach,
the money you would have paid for taxes
in each pay period can help you top up
your investment plan so you don’t have
to wait for your tax return to reap the
benefits of your contributions. We can
show you how to approach your employer to have your deductions reduced.
Balance — It is key to have a properly-balanced portfolio that strategically allocates your investments among different
types of financial assets so they effectively
work together to build your wealth and re-
duce your exposure to market variability.
By taking advantage of a monthly investment plan, you could be taking the fastest
route to financial independence so you can
enjoy life when you get there. v
