What You Should Know If You
Suffer From Dry Eyes
more of the layers are not being ef-
By Steven Mintz, O.D.
There’s help available for people who don’t have enough tears to
keep their eyes as moist as they
ought to be. Most people with Dry
Eyes are older adults because this
condition is associated with the natural aging process. But there are
other causes such as certain diseases, Vitamin A deficiency, an extremely dry environment or some
drugs such as antihistamines, antidepressants, and diuretics.
The normal tear film consists of
three different layers. The outermost or surface layer is a thin layer
of lipid or oil. This layer provides a
barrier which prevents the underlying tears from evaporating or
spilling onto the cheek. The next
layer is the aqueous or water layer,
which makes up 90% of the entire
tear film. This layer protects the
eye from infection, flushes debris
away and provides nutrients and
oxygen to the cornea. The bottom
layer is a thin coating of mucin. The
uncoated cornea is hydrophobic
(‘water repelling’) so the aqueous
would not stay in contact with the
cornea.
Mucin is hydrophilic
(‘water-loving’) and thus allows the
tears to stay in contact with the

film over the surface.
Dry eyes can occur when one or
fectively produced. Optometrists can
now prescribe very effective eye
drops which can restore the proper
quality of each of the layers of the
tears.
Symptoms of Dry Eye include
red, irritated, scratchy or uncomfortable eyes; a burning sensation; a
feeling that something is in the eye;
blurred vision; excessive watering as
the eyes try to comfort an overly dry
eye; and eyes that have lost their
normal clear, glassy luster. Anyone
experiencing any of these symptoms
needs to see their optometrist for
tests to evaluate the quality, amount
and distribution of tears.

“Mineral Cosmetics” are not
synonymous with “Natural Cosmetics”. A lot of mainstream cosmetic companies are jumping on the
“mineral makeup” bandwagon. Consumers must beware that companies
will market their products by using
phrases such as “with natural botanicals” or “mineral based”. This is because people are becoming more
aware of what they are putting in and

“Art from the Heart” Show at
L’Arche Tova Café
By Hubert Pantel
L’Arche Winnipeg’s 2nd annual art
show, “Art from the Heart”, was
held in the L’Arche Tova Café on August 20th. Over sixty pieces of art
were created by 15 people with an
intellectual disability, members of the
L’Arche Winnipeg community. The
art pieces were created over a period of two months with the help of
instructor Tammy Vogel, who led six
Sunday afternoon workshops for the
budding artists. Under Tammy’s
guidance, the workshop participants
were able to explore various mediums and learn new techniques. The
result was a variety of artistic expression with the creation of cards, picture frames, coasters, acrylic on
rocks, and other mediums.
There was a steady flow of people between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm,
coming to the Café to admire the
artists’ creations which were
grouped under such headings as
“Things I Like”, “Makes Me Happy”,
“I Feel Good About”, or “Free to Create”. The art show coincided with
the weekly Transcona Biz Market
Garden in Centennial Square, just 3
doors west of the Café, so many
people were able to take in both
events.

and Barbara, two of the artists

The sale of the art pieces totaled
$432.00, and that money is being
sent to L’Arche International Solidarity Fund – helping L’Arche communities in poorer countries where
little, or no government funding is
available to support people with intellectual disabilities.

WINNIPEG DANCE FORCE
LOCAL DANCE STUDIO THRIVING!
Special to the Views
It’s just around the corner! It’s
nestled amongst hard-‐working families between East Kildonan and
Transcona, and it’s celebrating 10
years in business! Winnipeg
Dance Force (located across from
the new Sobeys on Plessis Road)
is thriving, and business owner
Kelly Swan Huck is thrilled. And it’s
no wonder. With many dance
schools focusing on one or two disciplines, Dance Force offers extremely well rounded training
opportunities, and with a star‐studded faculty to bolster the
school’s credibility.
Ms. Kelly (as her students call
her) has been teaching and performing in the City of Winnipeg
(and abroad) for 20 years. Apparently, she is highly sought after by
both students and independent
training
institutions
for
her
lyrical/contemporary and jazz
award-‐winning choreography. Swan
Huck takes it all in stride, though.
“Owning a dance studio is not for the
faint of heart”, she says. “It takes a
lot of teamwork and organization.”
Known-‐to-‐be especially gifted at working with young dancers, Swan Huck
takes the passion seriously. “Having
young kids of my own, we really believe in what we’re doing here. The
October 2015- Page 15
physical and emotional benefits of
a dance education at Winnipeg
Dance Force are great.”
Many studies have shown
(such as the one conducted by researchers from the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine) that dance is
the best exercise to improve cognitive skills.
“Dance integrates rational,
kinesthetic, emotional, and musical
brain functions all at once.” – says
Ms. Kelly. “And at Dance Force, children learn in a structured, disciplined
environment that builds real self‐esteem. New material is always a
struggle at first, but to see them coming back each week and improving…they learn things that no one
can ever take away from them. They
overcome adversity and that will get
them through anything in life.”

contributions made by women to the
Canadian war efforts were crucial,
and their experiences forged a new
understanding of women’s capabilities both within themselves and within
society.
Through artifacts, images, audiovisual material, oral history and
text, World War Women will delve
into the personal stories of the
women associated with these materials. It will be organized in standalone thematic zones, each devoted
to an element of the wars that particularly involved and affected
women.

TAX TIPS
Tax Planning Solution - It’s OK
to double dip
By Darryl B. Horeczy, Consultant, Investors Group
Help secure your family’s future
As a parent, you have to be a terrific juggler. You juggle time to complete all the tasks and chores that fill
your day. You juggle responsibilities to
ensure your children have the best
possible childhood and prospects for
their future. Yet the toughest juggling
act of all is managing your finances
while raising a family. It can be even
more difficult to find the extra dollars
needed to invest towards a comfortable financial future, including your retirement and the educational plans of
your children.
If you’re a parent of young children, you are probably struggling
with a tough decision: Is it better to
first save for your retirement through
Registered Retirement Savings
Plans (RRSPs), or to save for your
children’s education through Registered Education Savings Plans
(RESPs)? Fret no more because
there is a way to do both: Make your
RRSP contribution before the dead-
line each year and use the resulting
tax refund to make an RESP contribution. That’s the ultimate “doubledip” because your child’s RESP can
also take advantage of “free” cash
from the federal government in the
form of a Canada Education Savings
Grant (CESG).
Here’s why the ultimate
“double-dip” works so well:
When you make your maximum
allowable RRSP contribution you
may enjoy tax savings that can be

applied towards establishing or
adding to your children’s RESPs.
The federal government’s CESG
program provides a matching grant
for each RESP contribution made for
an eligible child. The Basic CESG is
worth 20% on the first $2,500 of an
annual RESP contribution or $500
per year. This eligibility accumulates
and carries forward, so even if you
were unable to make enough of an
RESP contribution to access the full
Basic CESG money in previous
years, you can start to make up for it
now and in future years and get the
Basic CESG money your child would
have received in those earlier years.
Families with children born after December 31st, 2003 who also receive
the National Child Benefit Supplement may also qualify for additional
funds through the Canada Learning
Bond.
Tax Planning Solutions
Start now - Finding the funds to
make an annual RRSP contribution
may seem difficult – especially, with
all the daily juggling going on in your
life. So why not start now? Talk to
your Investors Group Consultant
about setting up a Pre-Authorized
Contribution (PAC) to make monthly
RRSP contributions. Your RRSP will
begin to compound on a tax-deferred basis for a potentially fast and
stronger growth over the long term.
You can even arrange for your employer to reduce withholding taxes at
source based on your RRSP contribution schedule, so that you can
fund monthly RESP contributions instead of waiting for your tax refund
in the spring to make an annual
RESP contribution. It’s a win-win sit-
uation that will allow you to also capitalize on the ultimate “double-dip”.
Let us help you feel more confident
about your future – plus make sure
you take full advantage of all the taxsaving and income-building opportunities that are available to you. v

On Thursday August 6, the Club
was honoured to have District Governor Ken Krebs and his wife Donna
in attendance for his official visit. In
his remarks he introduced this year’s
Rotary theme – Be a Gift to the
World. He told us a story relayed by
the RI President Ravindran that
demonstrates the power of giving.
District Governor Ken reminded us
that we have many gifts that we
bring to Rotary – time, talent and
knowledge. To succeed in the
eradication of polio will be Rotary’s greatest gift to the world. He
also advised that we need to be
ready to meet new challenges in the
area of attracting new members and
retaining current members. Ken has
served in many roles at both the
Club and District level. Ken and

As of July 24, Nigeria has been
polio free for one year! This is an incredible milestone to recognize as
the work goes on. Also the entire

The hard work continues in Africa to
immunize every child. Rotary Clubs
are working diligently to eradicate
polio.
In June, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg Transcona was sad to bid

of Transcona also presented a
cheque to Park Manor which will be
used to create the Rotary Library at
the new planned Park Manor facility.

GARDENS OF DELIGHT
TRANSCONA GARDEN CLUB NEWS
By Domia Derkach
October means getting your gardens ready for winter. Season to
Season how swiftly time passes as
gardeners keep pace with Mother
Nature and prepare for the next
growing season. The next year will
be a busy one, as it will be
Transcona’s Garden Club’s 50th
(Golden) Anniversary year. There
will be additional Planting Projects in
various areas of the Transcona
Community this year; however,
some projects will take more than a
year to complete. More information
is forthcoming and announcements
will be made in due time.
For the coming year, other activities are also on the list of possibilities so do keep your calendars
handy. Since the annual show has
been the highlight of each year, we
will include some sections in the
show that will be reminiscent of the
last 50 years. The Garden Club
would like to encourage gardeners
to plant some old-fashioned flowers,
some of which you seldom see such
as cosmos, nasturtiums and sweet
peas, as well as older vegetables.
You may not find these readily, however they are available.
In the meantime, we still have activities that are pending this year.
The next meeting will be held on
Wednesday, October 21st, 7:00
PM, at the Transcona Retired Citizens Centre, 328 Whittier Ave. West.
There will be a General Election, and
we are hoping that you might be interested in joining our group and
contributing some time to help take
the Club into the next 50 years of
gardening. We will also have a
speaker, not confirmed at press time
on a subject that you will enjoy. As
usual, refreshments will be served
and everyone is welcome.
If you are interested, the Garden
Club will be having a “Christmas
Workshop”. The workshop will be

The Kiwanis Club put forth a re-
quest to CNR that the 2747 be
brought back home for its retirement
and that it should be presented to
the Town of Transcona. The Kiwanis
wanted this locomotive to be a per-
manent exhibit and a testament to
the skill of the people of the
Transcona Shops.
CNR generously donated this lo-

2747 Train in Transcona Rotary Heritage Park
By 1960, the steam era in the
railway industry ended and hundreds
of old steam locomotives were retired from service and were waiting
to be demolished in the Transcona
Yards. After 34 years of service in
Western Canada, the Canadian National steam locomotive 2747 was
retired but with a different fate as the
others. It was saved from demolition.
The retirement of the locomotive was viewed with some regret,
as some missed the whistle, which
spoke of travel and adventure. In
total, the steam locomotives numbered 2,500 in their prime. The re-

value of a large locomotive would
run close to $6,000.
There were a number of re-
quests from cities and towns all
across Canada for old locomotives
that were associated with the growth
of the area. Many citizens wanted to
see these locomotives in local parks
as a reminder of the past. While

denied,
Transcona was very fortunate that
their request was granted.
In 1960, the Kiwanis started the
process to find a place of beauty
and recreation, in which to display
this historical locomotive and made
the commitment that No. 2747
would be protected, and preserved
in the years ahead. The perfect
spot was found in Kiwanis Park.
The Kiwanis Club transferred ownership to the Railway Museum,
which is operated by the Midwestern
Rail Association Inc.
So much has changed over the
years. The Town/City of Transcona
no longer exists, and the Kiwanis
Park has now become the
Transcona Rotary Heritage (Train)
Park. The park continues to be a City
of Winnipeg park, and is maintained
by the City.
The Transcona Historical Museum was approached by Councillor
Russ Wyatt. Councillor Wyatt wanted
to know if the Museum would consider taking on the project to restore,
protect, preserve and make the train
accessible for future generations.
Also the Museum would have more
opportunities to obtain grants for this
very worthwhile project. The Museum’s board of directors met and
decided that this was a project that
the Museum should undertake.
A sub- committee was created
to oversee this venture, consisting
of Lorne Tyson, Peter Martin, Murray Rougeau and Councillor Russ
Wyatt. The first task that this committee undertook was to have the
ownership of the 2747 train transferred to the Museum. Peter Martin, along with the committee
members worked diligently to obtain the ownership.
In September, the Winnipeg Railway Museum Executive and membership agreed to transfer ownership to the
Museum for a $1.00. The formal transfer of ownership will occur and then the
committee will begin the process of developing options, plans, and concepts
that will ensure the future of the 2747.
The board of directors of the Museum will make sure that the residents of Transcona will be made
aware of the plans and the progress,
and would also like to hear from you
about your ideas. If you would like to
be part of this working sub-committee, please email the Museum or
drop off your information at the Museum. Together we will ensure the
preservation of this wonderful artifact
for future generations! v

What You Should Know If You
Suffer From Dry Eyes
Continued from page 2
The optometrist also needs to
know about the person’s daily activities and general health as well as
about medications being taken and
environmental factors to which the
person is exposed at work or at
home. Based on test results, the optometrist will recommend a form of
treatment to maintain eye health and
comfortable vision.
Often, it is as simple as learning
to blink more often, changing environmental factors such as increasing
the level of humidity in the home, or
using artificial tear solutions or moisturizing ointments. In some cases
small plugs are inserted in the corner
of the eyes to slow drainage and loss
of tears.
Eyeglasses with a special moisture chamber can help people with
severely dry eyes including persons
with Sjogren’s Syndrome which is
eye-and-mouth dryness caused by
an immune system attack on the salivary and tear glands. If the underlying cause of the dry eye condition is
a general health problem or due to a
medication being taken, the optometrist will refer the person to the
proper health professional for care.
