2012 – 2013 Flu Season: What You Need to Know
Volume 2, Issue 4 • September 2012 Employee Spotlight: Chris Parris Celebrating 40 Years! In 1972, a group of 10 Upstate homebuilders decided to construct a company of their own. Who better to run a supply business, they reasoned, than the very folks who purchase said supplies. The founding builders/stockholders of Greenville Builders Supply — R. Buford Landers along with M. Graham Proffitt III, John C. Cothran, Ellis Darby, David Balentine, Edward H. Hembree, W.N. Leslie, Alvin Trammell, Chester A. Reece and W.C. Balentine — intended the company to serve as their own supply source while also meeting the needs of all professional builders. Chris Parris - called “CP” by those who know him best - works out of our Hendersonville office in Window Sales. In October he will celebrate 7 years as an employee of GBS. Chris says his favorite part of working at GBS is “meeting lots of different characters, and having a good time interacting with them while laughing a lot.” Chris and his wife, Nicole, have two children: Anna Grace is three years old, and their son, Cale, is five months old. Nicole teaches second grade at a local elementary school. Construction broke ground in June 1972, and by October of that year, the original Mauldin location began delivering materials. Within five years the company expanded into Anderson. To ensure a name that embraced its growing geographical aspirations, Greenville Builders Supply became GBS Lumber in September 1979. Subsequent expansions included Hendersonville, NC in 1981 and Six Mile, SC in 2005; from its four strategic locations, GBS Building Supply now serves both Carolinas and parts of Georgia. Growing from a startup with just 10 workers to an employee-owned company with a staff nearly 100 strong, GBS has thrived because of dedicated employees, strong executives, a supportive Board of Directors, and most of all, our loyal customers. THANK YOU for making our success possible. We are excited about the next 40 years! In his spare time, Chris enjoys fishing, camping, and hiking, although he admits most of his time is now spent caring for his young children. He enjoys walking the Main streets of Saluda and Brevard with his family and said time spent with them is a great blessing. A native to the area, Chris is an avid Tarheels fan. Even if you’re not shopping for windows, take a moment to chat with Chris in our Hendersonville store. He’ll have you laughing in no time! The 1972 “ribbon” cutting of Greenville Building Supply’s first location. John Cothran (Founder and current Board Member) is cutting the “ribbon.” Fellow Founder and Board Member, Graham Proffitt, is standing over Mr. Cothran’s left shoulder. Buford Landers (first President of GBS), Cecil Martin, David Balentine, and Lou Hutchings. ‘‘ Chris is active in his community, and donates blood every quarter through his church, Mills River United Methodist. His blood type is O Negative - the universal donor type - so he feels it’s important to donate as often as he can. ‘‘Opportunities multiply as they are seized. - Author Unknown Upcoming Events Friday, September 28 -- Mauldin store closes at 1:00 PM for inventory. Some typical signs of flu are fever, body aches, muscle aches, cough and congestion. Physicians are warning you to take it seriously by washing your hands often and getting your flu shot. The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated yearly, especially children, pregnant women and the elderly.
