The unifying factor for each of these areas is their proximity to the Gulf of St. Vincent, whose cooling ocean breezes prevent grapes from ripening too rapidly, thus permitting them time to develop even greater levels of flavour, colour and tannin while maintaining acidity. For Cabernet Sauvignon, this allows for the creation of wines of considerable intensity and concentration, imparting a purity to their cassis and black fruit flavours that distinguishes McLaren Vale’s wines from those produced in regions such as the Barossa. This example, from Chapel Hill, perfectly communicates this sense of freshness and precision. CHAPEL HILL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011 McLaren Vale, South Australia 965830 (XD) 750 mL $24.95 TASTING NOTE: Deep colour, and dark in character, with an abundance of cassis, saltbush, olive and charry oak; the palate is densely packed with fruit and tannins and the fresh acidity provides energy on the bright medium-bodied finish. True, the “heartbreak grape” is tricky to master, but when it is done well the results are phenomenal: perhaps no other wine so perfectly embodies elegance and subtlety, or speaks so eloquently of conscientious grape growing, skilful winemaking and beautiful terroir. Here in Ontario we are blessed with terroirs that create some of the best, most delightfully complex Pinot Noirs out there. These are wines you’ll be proud to pour at your most momentous gatherings – and they’ll deliver on pleasure, too. continued on page 36 34 VINTAGES Nov_23_pages 34 to 37_EN_Layout 1 13-10-30 12:41 AM Page 35 VINTAGES 35 Nov_23_pages 34 to 37_EN_Layout 1 13-10-30 12:41 AM Page 36 CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Ripe Pinot Noir grapes. Winemaker Thomas Bachelder is a Pinot Noir specialist. This white barn in one of Hidden Bench’s vineyards is a local landmark. A gazebo at Rosewood Estates Winery provides visitors with a shady spot to enjoy the vineyard views. Some of the most interesting Pinots grown in Niagara come from vineyards along the bench, a glacial-carved extension of Niagara Falls – essentially an enormous rocky step of the escarpment – that adds an extra layer of character and textural sensation of minerality to a wine. The limestonerich Beamsville Bench is the westernmost of these sub-regions, and creates Pinots with a distinct mineral quality. Its next-door neighbour is the Twenty Mile Bench, which features a distinctive double-bench formation, clay-limestone soils and high elevation, and tends to yield intense, bright and fresh Pinot with mineral undertones. Further east between the Welland Canal and Niagara River sits St. David’s Bench, a gently sloping bench of deep clay and sandstone that sees generous rainfall and leans towards slightly softer, silky Pinots. Like all of Ontario’s wine regions, the benches have a cool climate that allows Pinot to retain plenty of foodfriendly acidity while developing its complex flavours and nuances. Pinot creates incredibly lithe and elegant red wines, which is good news for the foodie: these are wines that can harmonize with subtly flavoured foods without overpowering them, and at the same time have the backbone to stand up to red meats and aged cheeses. These traits make Pinot indispensable during the holidays, as it’s a perfect accompaniment to seasonal foods like autumn stews, root veggies, and traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings. 36 VINTAGES Nov_23_pages 34 to 37_EN_Layout 1 13-10-28 5:54 AM Page 37 the finer points ROSEWOOD PINOT NOIR 2011 HIDDEN BENCH ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2011 VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Peninsula Good tension in this wine offering raspberry tart, red cherry, sandalwood and spice aromas with flavours of red plum and sour cherry. Pinot Pairing Traditional Turkey Dinner One of the finest red wines for food, Pinot Noir is suited to autumn and holiday favourites and especially to a traditional turkey dinner. The wine’s elegance means it won’t overpower the subtler flavours of light or dark meat, while it’s still got the stuffing (no pun intended) to match the more flavourful savoury elements of the meal. Pinot’s earthy and beetroot notions perfectly complement root vegetables and mushrooms, and its red-fruit tang is a beautiful accompaniment to (or even substitute for) not-too-sweet cranberry sauce. And of course, as one of the most intriguingly complex wines, Pinot also makes an inspiring centerpiece for sipping and conversation. TASTING NOTE: Dark ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, with smoke, game and violet accents. Plush and expansive, offering spicy cherry and cassis flavors and notes of candied flowers and bitter chocolate. Vanilla and cracked pepper build with air and carry through a long, sappy and gently tannic finish. Score: 91(+?) The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy entry of blackberry, tobacco and black pepper with a structured, bay leaf-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Drink 2013-2019. But it’s not a serious spat. Given time, the wine’s power will adapt to its vibrant red fruit, which already fills the mouth generously enough to intercede with the fierce tannins. Cellar it for four years or more. On the palate it is multifaceted, elegant, concentrated, impeccably balanced, and holding strong. It should drink nicely for another 10-15 years if not longer. TASTING NOTE: Winemaker Wenceslao Gil Durantez began his wine career when his soccer career was ended by injury. The Beautiful Game’s loss has been our gain. His 100% Tinta de Toro, the local name for Tempranillo, offers an impressively complex nose of smoked meat, vanilla, spice and violets. Boldly structured, rich and flavourful with a light spicy note on the long finish.
