Dolce far niente
On 15th January 2013, the Costa Concordia will be lifted from its slumber off the island of Giglio in Tuscany,
Italy, to sail again as a vessel, in a short drive to its final destination. This operation will be carried out with
the assistance of the insurance company of the multinational Carnival Corp, owner of Costa Cruises. The transoceanic pachyderm will be taken to a nearby coast where it will be decommissioned and its fragments sold
to the highest bidder. Who will buy these relics? In our more fanciful hypothesis, some local oppressed community could use those pieces to build new makeshift vessels for illegal migration purposes.
The metaphorical potential latent in the sinking of the giant is extremely fertile but very ambitious. And probably, these are not times for great ambitions. The magnitude of the prevailing political confusion today rather
invites to process reality through abstractions less grandiose and more open.
Poderes Unidos approaches the physical presence of the Costa Concordia with the schematic precision from
a architectural software, proposing deliberate gestures, potential cuts to be applied to the vessel, redefining
such pieces to insert them in new economies. A formal exercise in which a specific technology is applied aesthetically and illogically to produce imaginary that denies narrative. No matter where you cut, the truth is that
mental projections applied to the failure of the ship (from the most pessimistic to the most ironic) will persist
to float in the inherent symbolism from the sea, who knows something we do not.
