WELCOME TO
CSUSB PALM DESERT CAMPUS
Dear Incoming PDC Student:
Welcome to the Palm Desert Campus! The campus is part of California State University,
San Bernardino and was established to serve the students of the Coachella Valley. We are
pleased to tell you we have just completed our 26th year in the Coachella Valley! The Cook Street campus is our permanent campus site, which opened in 2002. Attending
PDC gives you the advantages of a small campus and all of the opportunities of a large
university. On the Palm Desert Campus you will find you’ll be in smaller classes and be able
to get to know your instructors and fellow students. At the same time, you will have access
to all of the resources of a large university.
You should know that all the buildings on this campus were constructed without state funds. They were built with funds donated by Coachella Valley residents, foundations and desert
cities. To date, donations to build our campus total nearly $35 million – money the Valley
has invested in you! These same Coachella Valley residents, foundations and Desert cities
have set up scholarships that are restricted to students on this campus. The bottom line is
this - this community supports our campus and supports you.
We’ve come a long way from a few classes offered in classrooms at College of the Desert,
our original campus. The Palm Desert Campus now has a spectacular 300-seat theater,
state-of-the-art nursing labs, state-of-the-art technology in classrooms, a student health
center and a new student services area. What we most need now is your participation in the life of this campus, and I encourage you
to take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you through the campus. Get
involved in student government, join a club, attend a play, represent the campus at an event
in the community or volunteer to help our Coachella Valley Health Collaborative and/or our
Palm Springs Institute for Environmental Sustainability--organizations that are improving our
health in the Valley. In addition, let us know about your community service!
We’re not only proud of the physical campus, we also take pride in the supportive climate the
campus encourages. Join study groups in your classes; if someone can’t find a classroom,
offer to show them; even greet people on campus with a smile.
We are all happy and excited that you are here! We all are here to help you succeed in
earning your degree – so, connect with us and let us know what and how you are doing!
Best wishes for a great academic experience,
Dr. Sharon Brown-Welty, Dean

FINANCIAL AID
1. Prepare
Familiarize yourself with the types of aid available, how much aid you’ll need, and whether you’re
eligible.
2. Apply
With the exception of some scholarships, everyone must use the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) to apply for aid. When you’re ready to apply, fill out the on-line www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make
sure you get your application in by March 2nd of every year.
3. Receive
The Department of Education will inform you and CSUSB about your Expected Family Contribution
(EFC). Then, CSUSB will tell you how much and what types of aid you qualify for. Check your CSUSB
email often - this is the mode by which we communicate with you.
4. Repay
If your aid is in the form of loans, become familiar with the repayment process. Loans are legal
obligations, so before you take out a student loan, think about the amount you’ll have to repay over
the years.
Financial aid programs provide support for students to help meet the costs of obtaining a college education.
Funding for such programs is provided by the federal and state governments, the individual colleges and
universities, and a variety of other public and private sources.
Financial aid is split up into two categories based on the reason the money is awarded:
Achievement-based aid is awarded to students who have a special characteristic, skill, talent, or ability. Typically
achievement-based aid is in the form of scholarships.
Need-based aid is provided to students who demonstrate financial need. Most financial aid, particularly publicfunded aid, is awarded on the basis of financial need determined through the application process and in
accordance with a prescribed federal formula.
How to contact Financial Aid at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus
A financial aid consultant is available to assist students at the Palm Desert Campus every Thursday in the RG
Administration Office.
To set an appointment, please call (760) 341-2883 during PDC business hours.
To leave a message for financial aid please call (760) 341-2883 x78122 or email Dr. John Anderson at andersonj@
csusb.edu.

TYPES OF AID
4 BASIC TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS AVAILABLE
·
GRANTS: Federal or state gift assistance with no obligation for work or repayment
·
LOANS: Providing funds now, but with a future repayment obligation
·
SCHOLARSHIPS Gift assistance with no obligation for work or repayment
·
WORK-STUDY Part-time work while attending the institution
Most often, financial aid will come to you in the form of a package consisting of a combination of the different types
of aid available. The combination of aid offered depends on the availability of funds, your eligibility, the timeliness
with which the application process is completed, and your year in school.
There are many different types of aid available within each of the main categories of grants, loans, and scholarships.
It’s worth it to review each type to find which one might suit you and your circumstances. Not all aid types will
apply to everyone, but nearly everyone can find aid that works for them.
Grants
Currently, grants fall under four general categories. The first, and largest number of grants are for Undergraduate
Students. 2nd Bachelor Students, Credential Students, and Graduate Students make up the three remaining
categories. Certificate students are only eligible for loans. Check out our Grants section for a list of which grants are
offered under each category.
Loans
A loan is a form of financial aid which must be repaid. The terms for repayment are specified in the promissory note
that the recipient signs prior to receipt of the first loan disbursement. Before signing the promissory note, students
should thoroughly understand all their rights and responsibilities concerning any loan received. There are many
different types of loans that you should familiarize yourself with before deciding which type it right for you. Check
out our Loans section for more information.
Scholarships
The CSUSB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships accepts scholarship applications for the upcoming academic
year beginning in January. The scholarship application can be accessed via MyCoyote. Scholarships are awarded to
new and continuing students attending CSUSB. Most scholarships are administered by the CSUSB Office of Financial
Aid and Scholarships. The deadline to apply listed on the application when you log in. Check out our Scholarships
section for more information.
Veterans
There are a variety of sources for financial support for veterans, active military, reservists and dependents. Each has
its own forms, processes and timetables. Check out our Veterans’ Benefits section for more information.

PARKING REGULATIONS
General Information
Parking permits are required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at both the Palm Desert and San Bernardino campuses.
For more information contact Parking Services at (909) 537-5912 or http://parking.csusb.edu/indez.html.
Parking Enforcement
Parking rules and regulations are designed to: provide orderly parking for faculty, staff, students, and visitors;
protect pedestrians and to ensure emergency access to all buildings. Violation of these regulations can result in parking citations, vehicle immobilization, or towing of your
vehicle. ONLY the Department of Parking Services has the authority to waive or grant exceptions to these
regulations. Parking and Transportation Services will make every effort to ensure that a parking space is available to
anyone who purchases a parking permit through enforcement of these regulations. Due to the number of parking
spaces on campus, enforcement of parking regulations is important even during off-peak periods. A concerted
effort is made to enforce regulations as uniformly as possible.
HOW TO BUY A PERMIT
Daily permits can be purchased at the Mary Stuart Rogers Gateway building lobby and in the bookstore during
their regular operating hours. Hours are posted on a quarterly basis (see campus hours, page 2). Hours for summer
school session vary and are posted.
Quarterly permits can be purchased by following this link https://parking.csusb.edu/index.html. This service is
designed for students with a valid MyCoyote user account (need your MyCoyote number). The cost for permits is
$102 per quarter.
Violations of the parking regulations include the following:
• No current permit/decal displayed
• Overtime violation
• Unauthorized parking in a disabled space
• Displaying an altered/stolen/lost permit/decal
• Parking in an angled parking space facing traffic

CAMPUS WIRELESS NETWORK ACCESS
Network access is available throughout the campus for variety of wireless
devices including Smart-phones, laptops, iPads, etc. There are two possible
network connections available to campus users. One connection type is secure
(Eduroam) and the other (CSUSB-ACCESS) is not, see below.
CSUSB PREFERS THAT STUDENTS USE THE EDUROAM WIRELESS ACCESS
For more information please visit our website: http://tns.csusb.edu/network/wireless.html
Eduroam (education roaming) is the secure worldwide federated network access service developed for the
international research and education community.
The eduroam network makes it easier for visitors of CSUSB to access the Wi-Fi network.
Similarly, when CSUSB faculty, staff and students travel, they will have hassle free Wi-Fi access at thousands of
participating institutions. For more information visit the eduroam web page.
For generic instructions on how to configure your Windows, Mac OS X or Linux computer for eduroam, see the
eduroam User Configuration Guide.
The eduroam network is a world-wide network. As such, you will need to add @csusb.edu to your Coyote ID, even
while on campus.
The first time you connect, you will receive an alert warning about the risk of rogue servers. To protect your Coyote
ID and password, your responsibility is to expand the Details of the alert and confirm the Radius Server is central.
csusb.edu. If the server is anything other than central.csusb.edu, choose the Terminate option.
To configure the eduroam network on your device follow the directions on the next page.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus has more than ten active student and professional clubs, which organize various social functions and volunteer opportunities
throughout the year.
One of the easiest ways for students to expand and enhance their educational
experience is to join one or more of the established organizations on campus,
or to start a new one.
Clubs and organizations offer opportunities for students to challenge
themselves with new responsibilities while becoming involved in the campus
community. They also provide educational, social, and recreational experiences
that enrich students’ lives.
Club officers and committee chairs gain leadership skills that have tremendous
value in their professional careers after graduation. Clubs also provide students
with a sense of belonging and the pleasure of spending time with people who have similar interests.
The university registers clubs and organizations through the Office of Student Leadership & Development Office at
the San Bernardino Campus. For more information or to charter a club visit: http://studentleadership.csusb.edu/
